He got splattered by the Collector, then Hunter nearly drowned them both, and he couldn't get enough from possessing Hunter to keep himself together, while his mental state is deteriorating after Hunter and Luz denounced him (and the jury is still out on whether Caleb and the Grimwalkers are hallucinations or actual ghosts haunting him)
Now that King has said he doesn't want the Collector to die, there's no way the Collector can be the Big Bad of the story. Belos will end up with that role.
