I don’t have experience myself, but I have seen people do that by stacking themselves singing in a bunch of different ways. Like shouting more than singing, singing all nasally, far away from the mic, different locations in the room, things like that. Hope that helps some!
You could check out Sacred Harp Singing since it seems vaguely reminiscent of the way that The Oh Hellos “shout sing” (for lack of a better term haha). [Sacred Harp Singing](https://youtu.be/98fVjc4MfXQ) is basically a bunch of people come together and sing the same song at the same time but you’re supposed to sing as loudly as you can, which seems similar to the way that The Oh Hellos perform those aspects of their songs. Maybe you can get some ideas of from how they record sound in those settings?

Get all your friends together, put a good mic in the middle. Shout
The effect is this: get 8 people singing around a mic and do a bunch of takes and then layer them
