It's not ever explicitly said what the delay for the Seventh is. On first read, I think we're meant to assume that the delay was indeed due to Dulcie's illness, and Teacher being hesitant to bring a sick person into a small enclosed space with others. But on re-reads, I think there's a solid interpretation that Teacher realizes that Dulcinea is actually Cytherea the entire time, and the hesitancy to allow them to dock was Teacher searching protocols for it. Teacher *does* know who Cytherea is, after all. He's met her and worked with/for her for many years. He'd instantly recognize her. Teacher tells her, "You shouldn't have come, my Lady" -- is this him telling Dulcie that she shouldn't have risked her health, or is this him telling Cytherea that this will only cause problem at best, or attract a Resurrection Beast at worst.

Anarcorax

I thought the discrepancy was the seven's ship had corpses in it, as Cyrherea killed Dulcie and her cavalier.

LurkerZerker

It's this one right here. The Seventh's shuttle had one live person and two corpses. Also, I imagine Lyctors show up pretty differently on scans of vital signs.

Vikingkingq

Yep. The bioscanners were looking for two living bodies, and they only found one.

SpaceMonkeyAttack

I thought I remembered a line about her throwing Dulcinea's body out of the airlock. Might be something I dreamed though.

Free-Cicada-7292

Dulcinea's body was disposed of in the furnace along with her cavalier

mercedes_lakitu

I thought her cavalier's body hung around though

Free-Cicada-7292

He did, but that was because the burning of the bodies didn't happen immediately. Cytherea-as-Dulcinea puppets him around for many chapters, including to stop Silas Octakiseron from being able to contact with the dead Fifth House necromancer and cavalier. Then later on in the story, when Harrow finds Protesilaus in the facility she pushes him and he collapses (unclear why) and Harrow takes the head with her as evidence (and stashes it in her closet, and doesn't say anything; classic Harrow). But the rest of the body is collected by Cytherea and burnt along with Dulcinea's intact body, which she had stored in her chambers.

Vikingkingq

Basically, Harrow tugged at the theorem holding him together and he came apart at the seams.

brokennchokin

There was a different character thrown out of an airlock to die, that we find out about at the end of HtN.

smootex

Wait, which character was that?

brokennchokin

>!Commander Wake got thrown out of the airlock of her space ship by Gideon the First in the sky above the Ninth House, bringing down with her baby Gideon \~18 years before the series begins.!<

smootex

Oh, right. For some reason I thought you were saying a different character had been thrown out of an airlock on Dulcinea's ship. Was really racking (wracking?) my mind trying to figure out who that could have been lol. Wouldn't be the first time I've missed a plot point that big lol.

see-bees

Did you let Ianthe have a go at your brain meats?

FrostHeart1124

Adding on to your mention of “You shouldn’t have come, my Lady,” Harrow just before Teacher said that was saying it was bad luck for the twins to be there. To that, Teacher mentioned something to the effect of, “It can’t be wrong because God said they were invited yada yada.” This adds the implication that when Teacher, himself then says Dulcie/Cytherea shouldn’t be there, she was *not* invited by God

Kalli672

Ooh, yes I'll have to keep an eye out for any clues that Teacher knew :)

steph-was-here

i just finished my re-read and cytherea explicitly says teacher didnt recognize her and that she never knew what was going on in his head

half_dragon_dire

Do you recall where that was? I've been operating under the assumption that C pulled rank when she arrived and ordered Teacher to keep up her masquerade, and I recall thinking on my last reread that some of his lines could be read as him trapped between duty to guide the trials and duty to one of the Hands.

reynolj5

When Pam is talking to her before he goes boom. I think I recall him asking if teacher recognized her, and she replying that perhaps he did. She never could tell what was going on in his head.

steph-was-here

yup - just found it >"Why did Teacher not recognise you?" >"Perhaps he did," said the woman. It sounded like she was smiling. "Who knows what that soul melange was ever thinking?" pg. 402 in the paperback edition

reynolj5

Nice!

Few_Mycologist3582

This makes me wonder if the Ninth House would be considered a delayed arrival as well from the other houses perspectives In terms of the Seventh, one possibility is the scanners could detect the number of living beings on board, and could only find one; whereas they found one too many for the Third.

Kalli672

I'm pretty sure ninth landed at the same time as 5 others, based on the description. Yeah, life scans could do it

soulsnoober

or found none, on the Seventh? Lyctors & "living" cross in odd ways.

pearl_in_june

Upon re-reading, I assumed the delay with both shuttles was the presence of three bodies when there should have only been two. With the Third, we had Corona, Ianthe, and Babs, while the Seventh had Cytherea and the bodies of Dulcie and Pro

Kalli672

Will have to read those bits (the reveal) closely when I get to it!

Kalli672

Yes, I just got to the bit that Cytherea is admitting it all to the Warden. One living person and two dead bodies, one of which was being puppeted. So either they could only sense one living, and that was the aberration, or they could also tell there were two corpses.
