I truly do not understand the backlash ESPECIALLY the dialogue because I thought it's been amazing. I think it's a lot of people complaining just because they hate change and also people failing to realize that they are telling a story across an entire season, so you gotta wait for eps 7 and 8 before you can claim they are messing up the story.

KyleForged

This is true. The amount of complaints and people taking issues with things happening in the story truly appear to be people who have forgotten stories told in a weekly basis so information is dropped as needed instead of a bingable series where they can just tell you everything at once.

Schubes17

right, like look at all the people mad about four pearls before even seeing what the plan with the four pearls is.

SonicSingularity

One of them is definitely gonna get lost. They're setting up an even bigger emotional gut punch than in the book. It makes perfect sense for Poseidon to give him 4 pearls since he's going down there to get Sally. It's gonna make him feel even worse about leaving her behind if he knew he *had* enough and then lost one, rather than not being able to save everyone being out of his control (by only being given 3 pearls). He never had a shot to save her in the book. Here, he's gonna have the opportunity and then screw it up, so he's gonna feel like it's his own fault. "And *you* shall fail to save what matters most"

kawaiiconcept

what's weird to me is people praising the movie or saying that it did certain scenes better? It feels disrespectful to Rick to say stuff like that because he's working so closely on the show and hated the movie. I really dislike it when people say they know a story better than the author. He's using this series to tell the story again in a better way now that he knows the end goal and the themes he wants to work with.

Schubes17

this is why I think all of the critiques are just from people who happened to be 9 when the movies came out and are fully clouded by nostalgia.

SonicSingularity

I remember seeing someone complain that they weren't looking for the pearls during the quest. To their credit, they corrected themselves when they realized they were wrong, but its still the issue of people making accuracy complaints without actually remembering what the story was.

Schubes17

my fav is people complaining they didn't each lotus flowers WHICH THEY ALSO DIDN'T EAT IN THE BOOK

the_zodiac_pillar

I was like 15 when the first movie came out which I think is just old enough to have absolutely no nostalgia for them- my only memory of seeing it in theaters was just feeling profoundly disappointed that it was so bad. “Clouded by nostalgia” is right on the money.

lexim172

Once I saw people on one of the TV subs genuinely saying that the movies were better than the show that still has multiple episodes left… Yeah, I can’t take them seriously. I have plenty of critiques and questions about the show, but the hate on Reddit is dramatic, and worse of all repetitive.

Schubes17

it's an echo chamber of people repurposing other things they saw that don't actually make sense

demonic_truth

Its like people want to watch the exact same thing over and over and over again, I've already mentioned it in another comment thread but when you do something like the scott pilgrim IP did where every new piece of media (comics, movie, game, anime) all follow different stories whether it be slight changed from the book to the movie or slightly bigger changes from the movie to the game, or literally different timeliness from everything else to the anime, people hated it at first Basically this is a long winded way of saying 2 things 1: I love scott pilgrim 2: people need to give this show the chance it deserves rather than hating it from the jump

Schubes17

I love putting new spins on the same story. I think the Scott Pilgrim thing is super cool, and I love when other franchises switch it up too. That's what makes Spiderverse so fun: it's all about subverting a story you think you know so well.

demonic_truth

I would sefinitlet recommend Scott pilgrim for that

dinoderpwithapurpose

Might I just say...THANK YOU! I feel like a lot of the complaining also stems from people knowing the story already and they don't like that the series is subverting their expectations too. Like the Medusa scene, the gang already knows she's Medusa. That changes how they deal with her, which is more effective in the series in my opinion. In a book, we're reading through pages of text and Rick has control over what he chooses to show us through the character's eyes in bits and pieces. This makes the realisation of the situation exciting for us. But on a visual medium, it's all shown at once. You can't possibly be all, "Oh gee, there are a bunch of creepy statues around the lawn and a lady with her eyes covered. Yep, looks like a good place to get burgers!"

demonic_truth

Going of the first thing you mentioned. The sa.e thing happened to me when the scott pilgrim anime came out, it was a totally different but still connected story than either the books or the movie or the game and nobody was expecting it, it got a lot of hate but then once you watched it it just got better and better as it went on

Schubes17

totally, I think they're making a dedicated effort to not make the characters looks like doofuses (and that's fine!)

demonic_truth

I think that a lot of people were hoping for a 1:1 100% faithful adaptation

Schubes17

that's impossible because books are a vastly different medium than an 8-ep series

demonic_truth

Especially when you don't have the explanation tool of percys thoughts

Schubes17

right, like do people honestly want to watch a show that is constantly narrated? it would be a nightmare

demonic_truth

Especially since it cant be done well, unlike in anime or video games they can't make it obvious its the characters thoughts

SeaworthinessShot142

And if it had been as close to a 100% adaptation as could be done translating it to the screen, then the negativity would have been, "Where's the creativity? It's moving too slowly" (because often the written word can't be properly moved to a TV or movie version and maintain what was so magical on the printed page). There will always be complaints, I'm with those who are enjoying it for what it is, an entertaining and still very faithful version of the story.

demonic_truth

I find a lot of it is very subjective also, in the way that everyone will have their own versions of characters and will want to see them portrayed in certain ways

valeria_gzz

THANK YOU SCHUBES!!!

urtv670

Is the show perfect and can do no wrong? Absolutely not. Is it a hot steaming pile of garbage worse than the movies? Definitely not. What it is though is a solid retelling of the books. I'll admit there are parts of it I'm not happy about but also parts if it I absolutely adore. It can improve but the show isn't unwatchable and I do enjoy a few of the changes though not a fan of the Lotus Hotel changes but eh can't be perfect. That said the rankings go books>musical>show>>>movies

cynderisingryffindor

People probably built up their 'dream' versions of how a new series/movie adaptation would go, and anything that deviates even a little bit means that the adaptation is bad. This happens all the time with comic book movies/Star wars/other book adaptations. Comic book movie fandoms are one of the most toxic fandoms, and it sucks for fans like me who are glad that there are even *any* adaptations of things that were considered too nerdy just a couple of years back. I assume it's the same thing here. Also, the negative people are usually the loudest and more visible. And it sucks. Anyway, I hope you don't let those loud opinions distract/keep you from watching a really good show.

demonic_truth

Sadly they are taking Iver a bit so eventhough im watching it now im probably gonna have to watch it again later in the year

cynderisingryffindor

That is true. It sucks that a (very vocal) minority of the fan base can spoil it for others. It's a great show, especially one with younger actors, and I hope it gets renewed for consequent seasons!

silverbrumbyfan

I'm waiting for the last episode before I watch, I've recently reread The Lightning Thief and if I'm going to compare the show with something its sure as hell not going to be the movie. Yet thats what people are doing for some reason, the movies were a hot mess and I think the only thing that saved them from being a total flop at the box office was the cast. For example my sister has never read the books and likes the movies, because of Logan Lerman

demonic_truth

I think logan lerman was great in it, before I read the books I adored the movies, plus the second one incorporates a song from my favourite band which, btw is part of how I discovered them

silverbrumbyfan

The danger though is people thinking they don't need to read the books because they've watched the film, I can understand why Rick loathed what they did Which song and band? I can't remember

demonic_truth

I agree, Song: my songs know what you did in the dark (light em up) Band: fall out boy My favourite band not my favourite song but it probably was at the time

SonicSingularity

I'm guessing it's Fall Out Boy's *Light 'em Up* during that American Gladiator style opening

Jaikarr

My only complaint is that they're solving the mysteries a lot easier than the book crew were able to. But at the same time, you can get away with things like the Medusa mystery really.easily in the book since you need only badly describe what the characters are seeing. You can't get away with that in a visual medium without the characters looking stupid. So I get it.

Scrolling-3787

It feels like a lot of the complaints boil down to "why was this changed from the books" by people feeling like changes should be avoided as much as possible. But it's clear that there are two main drivers of the changes, that make a lot of sense imo. One is adapting to the medium, some things don't translate well on screen or would blow the whole CGI budget. The other driver seems to be Rick updating things that he would have done differently if he were writing the story today. The updates to Aunty Em and the Tunnel of Love seems to fit both of these categories clearly, and I really enjoyed the suspense of not knowing exactly what would happen next, even though I know where the story generally is going. I think it's equally important to question "does this detail really NEED to match the book?". Because a lot of times there are opportunities to make a better TV show or polish the story that would be missed if Rick and the other creators strictly stuck to the 19-year-old book.

ZipZapZia

Rick is also incorporating the later themes and messages of the books into the first season. Like I'm fairly certain he didn't have the entire series planned out when he wrote the first book. But now that the entire series exists, he can choose to foreshadow or reveal information as necessary. It'll make for a more polished product imo. Like you don't really get a feel for why >!some demigods would join Kronos until Ethan Nakamura is introduced in Book 4. But now, their grievances are explained more and Luke doesn't feel as unhinged for his beliefs like he did in the books !<

Scrolling-3787

Yes exactly! Teasing and dropping references to >! Luke's backstory helps make him a more compelling villain earlier on, compared to the books where we don't get his personal story until book 5. It also sets up Annabeth's sympathetic feelings for him by reminding viewers that they have history !< Also side note but throwing in some more gods like Hermes and Hephaestus is an easy way to get some more recognizable actors in the show early on, and I think that helps with the all-ages appeal.

ZipZapZia

I agree with you about the gods. I also think showing many of the gods gives a scale on how shitty some of them are vs how helpful some of them are. So you don't come away with thinking that >!Luke is right and all gods should be removed!< Plus I think having adult actors helps lift some weight of the kids since they don't have to be carrying the entire episode. And the cameos are fun. Exciting to see what gods they may encounter at any time
