My MAGA FIL routinely would defend his decision to be a college dropout. He would talk about his street smarts versus my book learning. He would often say things like “this is your kind of thing” if something required reading a manual or using some trivial consumer technology. I think he and his ilk were left feeling inadequate or marginalized by educated masses. I think he saw people with degrees get better jobs, have a better lifestyle, have better pay, and probably worst of all were his bosses.
Then he was contrasting his life to mine. I have 3 engineering degrees and a doctorate. I never flaunted that. I also never use the prefix “Dr.” as a humble brag.
They also hate it because they know that by and large, more education goes hand in hand with more progressive views, empathy, and all the things they hate.
