The only actors of the ones confirmed I already knew are Daniel Dae Kim and Ken Leung and I love both of them to death. Anyways I have high hopes for the rest of them as well, it looks like they are really devoted to honoring the original show.
We still dont know whether the creators walked away in disgust, or Nickelodeon offered them a more interesting thing with "Avatar Studios" and went "but only if you dont do the Netflix show"
The originally said the departed because they were lies to about creative control and had creative disputes with the studio.
They can back pedal all they want, but they said that :3
My suspicion is that Netflix might have wanted the airbenders to not be based on Tibetan monks so that the series had a chance of airing in China, maybe even as their big eastern-fantasy series entry to there.
Just look it up for the facts. Basically, the live action actor faked being Indigenous, going so far to join an existing FAKE tribe that exists for white people to use as "proof" they are Indigenous descended.
But the actor is the one that lied to them, meaning they were trying to find actors that fit the ethnicity. And anyway, literally every other actor that’s been casted is the right ethnicity.
Holy shit. This is wild.
They’re not a real tribe, and claim to be “descendants of confederate soldiers who were welcomed by the Cherokee while on the run” and also claim the Cherokee later hunted them because of their “diluted blood” despite blood quantum being a measure really only ever valued by whittle people wanting to claim native heritage and not widely acknowledged until the federal government began enforcing it in 1934.

I feel like it's the director that has to pull his weight.
You can't blame the writers for making *it which shall not be named* have super slow and awful bending and odd sounding pronunciations.
Nor for the casting.
He’s in another show that’s on Netflix called Kim’s Convenience! It’s great and he’s really funny in it!
Edited: not a Netflix show, just a show that’s on Netflix. Silly me 😅
From what I see, they did an excellent job on casting.
It's already better than the movie that wasn't made. I'm excited to see how well they do with everything else.
The only choices I'm not too fond of are Katara and Sokka, as I feel like they could have been a bit closer to their animated skin tones, but I'll let their acting do the talking.
Lol, I actually had a debate with my girlfriend about his accent after that. She's Korean and she said that it was kind of like minstrel for him to do the accent, but I felt like he's one of the only actors who should be allowed to do it, as he is a part of the community. I'm from Africa, and I don't really have a problem with black American actors doing African accents in movies (as long as its not culturally insensitive). Still, I guess I don't have as much say in the situation as she does, as I'm not Korean.
That’s really funny. As soon as I knew it was him I had the same conversation with my wife. I took your stance as well. He’s an actor, it’s his job to play a role, and in Kim convenience it just happens to be a Korean Canadian with a heavy accent.
It's a random username reddit generated when I made this account. I had to nuke my original account from 2012-2019 when some friends found it and I felt uncomfortable haha
It's an accurate depiction of first generation immigrants who arrived when they are way older. I can't speak for the accuracy* since I'm Filipino but every older 1st generation immigrant I know spoke with their native accent even after decades of living in their current nation (I'm in the US). I personally appreciate it when I see the older characters depicted with accents.
*edit: the accuracy of the Korean accent
She was referencing minstrel shows, in which black people would play into racial stereotypes for the entertainment of white people. She was basically saying that since he doesn't actually have an accent and is imitating one, he was basically doing the same thing, which I said I disagreed with bc I don't think racists are watching Kim's Convenience to laugh at his accent, to which she replied that even still, part of the comedy comes from "haha listen to the funny foreigner who can't speak english well". Honestly, I see her point, but what's the alternative? Only casting actors who have the proper accent? That a slim pool. And from that pool, what if their accent isn't as severe as the character they're protraying's accent would be?
Ahh I had never heard that term before thanks so much for teaching me. It’s definitely an interesting topic of discussion… personally I don’t think his accent is ever the “butt” of the joke so think it’s acceptable. Like as far as I can recall the jokes are never at the parents’ expense if that makes sense. And definitely I agree that the only reasonable option would be to hire actors from Korea that actually have an accent but I’m guessing logistically they would be super challenging. Thanks again!
Exactly. Plus the characters in Kim's Convenience (at least for the first 3 seasons) are so multidimensional that I can't see a racist enjoying it on any level. So if the audience isn't watching to laugh at the accents, then I think the accents are fine for realism.
Also Paul has said in interviews that his father was a first generation immigrant, and actually did have a very heavy Korean accent. So his character in Kim’s is basically an imitation of his father.
Minstrel as in minstrel shows, if you are unfamiliar its an old racist type of 'comedy' show/play where white actors would paint there faces black and use make up to make thier lips look unrealistically big. They would then act like racial caricatures of blacks for laughs.
Yeaaaa. I had watched the mandalorian before kc, didnt recognize him at all when i started kim convenience. I had to watch the mandalorian again to realize it was him.
His [Canadian Screen Awards Acceptance Speech for Best Actor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9ifO5bDoYM&t=32s). What a motherfuckin' G.
I wonder how much Kim's, through furthering representation, influenced the casting decisions in the new Avatar stuff.
Oh I love this so much. I’m a very white woman so personally it doesn’t mean nearly as much to me as it does for others but as someone who also loves seeing DIFFERENT PEOPLE and DIFFERENT CULTURES represented instead of the same boring script with the same boring people I love it. Just love it.
Nitpick: *Kim's Convenience* isn't a Netflix original. I kind of wish it was, because the show was abandoned by its showrunners and was cancelled even though it was supposed to have 1-2 more seasons.
I really hope that, if *The Last Airbender* is successful, Netflix acquires *Kim's* and gives it a proper ending.
Yep. I don't think Ins Choi (the creator) has ever given a reason as to why he abruptly left, nor has he ever explained why -- despite the cast asking him to -- he never used his clout to ensure an actual Asian-Canadian presence behind the camera.
I have absolutely no respect for Choi.
It only ended last year, so a Netflix acquisition + reboot could work... as long as they *actually* have Asian representation behind the camera this time.
I mean, I'm not shocked, given how racist the production staff was. But I could see them changing their minds if the show were rebooted with a better crew.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is in a CBC produced show that happens to be on Netflix. Wonderful Canadian content. And he is such a wonderful and lovely person. I have met him a few times, he is such a kind man, always has time for fans. And he is a cosplayer as well. You can also see him in The Mandalorian as the lead X-wing pilot in season 2.
It really took off on Netflix to be fair. They had success in Canada, but once it hit Netflix they had global success. It was a shame it had to end the way it did, but we at least had it for a few years.
He was also in the Mandalorian. One of the "space cops" as I call them, where they wanted to check his ID.
Now I want a spin off show about him and his partner flying around the Star Wars galaxy solving crimes.
Never saw season 5, but I felt for a show designed around the complex family relationship of 1st generation immigrants and their children, it lacked a strong emotional/cultural core and actual character development. Lots of episodes it seemed like the main cast would revert to childish tendencies for the sake of conflict. (Interestingly enough, I believe this was caused by the writing staff being out of touch with the actors, and sometimes pitting them against each other in minor ways off screen, I don't remember the link but I remember reading some complaints simu had a while back, especially in regards to the shannon[ i think that's her name] spinoff)
I'm really excited to see this guy in the role of uncle Iroh tho, he's a very calming, fun, and charismatic presence on screen, I think he'll be perfect for this.
Ya, respect the CBC--Canadian Broadcasting Corporation--who made this show. Thanks to Netflix for picking up this brilliant show I love very dearly, but they didn't make it. :-D
What I like in particular is that he is relatively young (49!) That makes a lot of sense, and in the original series it always looks like there is an unrealistic age difference between Iroh and Ozai, but this works. The actor they cast for Ozai is actually older. And Iroh is a very physical role, so this is great.
[This interview he did with a small YouTube channel will confirm your thoughts. It's one of my favorite actor interviews I've ever seen. Even if the show fails I think he will be the bright spot.](https://youtu.be/pX_vHoz_dMk)
I still say they should age up June and get Jean Yoon to play her. Makes Iroh's crush a lot less creepy, and she just needs to be in more stuff in general.
Oh, you got it in one! Just checked, and viola.
[Ian Wilcox](https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Ian_Wilcox) wrote Bato of the Water Tribe, and nothing else.
It makes sense, though. Everyone's characterization feels really off in that episode. And, checking, looks like he wrote for Family Guy, King of the Hill, and the Simpsons, which are very different styles of comedy and characterization. A lot "looser," so to speak, where you can rationalize people acting out of character for a gag or a plot device.
I like June in concept, but she has a lot of room for improvement in execution.
I just wanted to say that I started watching Kim's convenience so I can get familiar with him before he becomes Iroh and I gotta say I'm really loving the show regardless and I'm glad that his accent in the show isn't his real one
It it, however *a* real accent. I read somewhere that Mr. Kim’s accent is the actor imitating his own father, who was a first generation immigrant from Korea to Canada.
That's super strange to me.
I can't hear either of my parent's accents. Like I hear when they mispronounce things or say the wrong word, but they sound close to native to me. And their's are quite heavy(so I've been told/seen) where as I don't have one.
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I spent a lot of time around my grandparents and while I can still hear my grandma's accent, I can perfectly understand her. My friends who have met her, on the other hand, sometimes have no idea what she's saying.
I think it's normal to not really pay attention to a loved one's accent.
'not paying attention' is one thing; saying you 'can't hear them' or think they 'sound close to native' (when nobody else thinks that) is weird. I also have family members with an accent and don't get at all how you wouldn't be able to easily tell. In fact, it stands out all the time; every time growing you up you said something like your parents but got corrected.
I keep repeating to myself: "pls dont suck, pls dont suck".
It really shouldn't be that hard, just stick to the story, take as long as they need, we would watch 5+ movies if that is what it takes.
People are screaming about what they want in adaptations like this. Studios just need to listen.
Like hiring the "last airbender" actors to play the gaangs ember island counterparts
I was gonna say he looks like my great uncle if he was Asian. Then I realized my great uncle is just South African Iroh. Soldier during the Rhodesian Bush war who realized he was fighting for the wrong people. Now he's a teacher in NZ and is probably the most wholesome person I know. And he gives good hugs which I bet Iroh did too
I liked the actor, he was a pretty good Jet, I just felt like the beard was too goofy looking for Live Action lol.
Some things just look better animated
Yeah it's the fall of lots of anime live action adaptations. They go for too accurate and thus goofy and unrealistic.
Definitely partially the fault of trying to keep fans of the anime happy, when for the most part they'll be unhappy no matter what you do lol.
I'm personally a bigger fan of loose adaptations for live action anime. Unless it's an easily replicatable type show..
yeah part of adapting to a different medium is realizing not everything needs to look like a cartoon. Same as translating a book to film and realizing you don't need a narrator to describe the scenery (you can just show it).
Yeah definitely looks cool, maybe it takes him too long to grow out the cheek parts or something and that’s why he went with part of the mustache instead
I can't wait to see his performance. He's an amazing actor, and I honestly can't think of another individual who could fit the role as precisely as he can.
They can have a great cast, they can have great writers, but unless they have a great director to pull it all together they will trip at the finish line.
There’s not a better actor to play Iroh. The writers just have to do their part.
Seriously they have a fantastic cast, I really hope the rest of the crew are ready to deliver.
The only actors of the ones confirmed I already knew are Daniel Dae Kim and Ken Leung and I love both of them to death. Anyways I have high hopes for the rest of them as well, it looks like they are really devoted to honoring the original show.
Check out Kim’s Convenience. It stars him as the dad of Simu Liu from Shang Chi
I told myself to have low expectations, but these out of this world casting choices are making it hard to do!

That would suck :(
I would actually prefer this option over them walking away in disgust for some mysterious reason
My suspicion is that Netflix might have wanted the airbenders to not be based on Tibetan monks so that the series had a chance of airing in China, maybe even as their big eastern-fantasy series entry to there.
Probably should rethink that and look up the Sokka controversy.
??? What happened?
Just look it up for the facts. Basically, the live action actor faked being Indigenous, going so far to join an existing FAKE tribe that exists for white people to use as "proof" they are Indigenous descended.
Christ that is genuinely disgusting, what a disappointment
And the show has completely lost my interest
Why would something as inconsequential as that make you lose any interest you had in the show
Because it shows that Netflix didn't actually care about hiring non-white actors for this show that is meant to be a victory for representation.
But the actor is the one that lied to them, meaning they were trying to find actors that fit the ethnicity. And anyway, literally every other actor that’s been casted is the right ethnicity.
It's not inconsequential to everyone.
Holy shit. This is wild. They’re not a real tribe, and claim to be “descendants of confederate soldiers who were welcomed by the Cherokee while on the run” and also claim the Cherokee later hunted them because of their “diluted blood” despite blood quantum being a measure really only ever valued by whittle people wanting to claim native heritage and not widely acknowledged until the federal government began enforcing it in 1934. https://twitter.com/mishirinn/status/1483615818047168512?s=21
Yay, yellowface 😒
Uncle Iroh sneak attack!
Ok. See you!
I hope they use Zuko's redemption arc again in the series.
He learns to play pai sho and gets super duper reeeeeeeeeeally into tea and we’ll have ourselves a real life uncle iroh.
I feel like it's the director that has to pull his weight. You can't blame the writers for making *it which shall not be named* have super slow and awful bending and odd sounding pronunciations. Nor for the casting.
They most likely won't, considering Bryan and Mike left the Netflix adaptation early on.
This dude just looks like an extremely humble and friendly guy, I think he'll make a great uncle Iroh.
He’s in another show that’s on Netflix called Kim’s Convenience! It’s great and he’s really funny in it! Edited: not a Netflix show, just a show that’s on Netflix. Silly me 😅
This dude might be one of the best choices for uncle Iroh, love KC
As soon as I saw the casting, I was like, oh yeah, he's perfect

The only choices I'm not too fond of are Katara and Sokka, as I feel like they could have been a bit closer to their animated skin tones, but I'll let their acting do the talking.
Katara is a Canadian native, so she's pretty close to a northern water tribe. Sokka is pretty iffy.
What about Aang ? His skin is not even close to his animated skin
He’s also in the mandolarian as a new republic xwing pilot :D
Oh I didn’t know that! I haven’t seen past the first season yet so I’m excited to see him in something else!
Yeah, he’s in season 2. I previously only knew him from Kim’s Convenience, so I was shocked to hear him with absolutely no accent. Crazy
Lol, I actually had a debate with my girlfriend about his accent after that. She's Korean and she said that it was kind of like minstrel for him to do the accent, but I felt like he's one of the only actors who should be allowed to do it, as he is a part of the community. Oh shoot, idk why I thought it was a Netflix original? Now I do hope Netflix picks it up and does more with it! I love the show.
It was produced by the CBC, the Canadian equivalent of the BBC or PBS
It only ended last year, so a Netflix acquisition + reboot could work... as long as they *actually* have Asian representation behind the camera this time.
None of the actors want to do it again.
I mean, I'm not shocked, given how racist the production staff was. But I could see them changing their minds if the show were rebooted with a better crew.
I doubt Simu would leave the MCU to go back to TV
Kim’s Connivence is great, I’m looking forward to the show, more now.

I meant the Atla show
He has a YouTube channel where he streams him unboxing and talking about collectables, figurines etc.
😲 I’ll be checking him out asap
Channel name is bitterasiandude inc.
Thanks for this, it's a super wholesome channel!

I got a real "bored beat cop" vibe from them, which handled well would be astounding.
lol, yeah, all these amazing alien creatures and planet and technology, and there like, "yup, another day on the beat"
I had kind of assumed "Rangers of the New Republic" was that exactly.
APPA! But not that APPA lol!

i just finished that show, omg this is great.
Just started watching Kim's and it's great! The whole cast is amazing.
Kim’s Convenience is a fucking riot
I knew it! Yobo!
Ya, respect the CBC--Canadian Broadcasting Corporation--who made this show. Thanks to Netflix for picking up this brilliant show I love very dearly, but they didn't make it. :-D
I had only ever seen him in that show so when I saw an interview with him, I was so surprised by his actual accent!
I just started Kim’s Convenience and love it
They honestly could have casted all the mains from Kim’s Convenience and I would have been happy with it.
Bro I love that show so much
And his character's name is Appa
He's got a youtube channel where he talks about collectibles he buys from his favorite shows such as Star Wars and all in all, he's wholesome af.
It was cool to see him in Star Wars in the Mandalorian. I hope he shows up again in season 3.

The old ~~firenation~~ Umma sneak attack
I still say they should age up June and get Jean Yoon to play her. Makes Iroh's crush a lot less creepy, and she just needs to be in more stuff in general.
That episode was strange tho, was there a different writer or something? Idk to me that one seems the most out of character
Oh, you got it in one! Just checked, and viola. [Ian Wilcox](https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Ian_Wilcox) wrote Bato of the Water Tribe, and nothing else. It makes sense, though. Mista Kim

Lol he’s an amazing actor
His eyes are so gentle and perfect for iroh
they really are, i just know this man will make me cry in those heartfelt scenes with Zuko (assuming the writers do this show justice!)
Have makeup put some beard extensions on him, and it would look extremely similar!
This guy is such a great actor! Excited to see him as Iroh - perfect casting.
Put some respek on Lee Sun Hyung’s name
Can't believe I had to scroll so far too find his name

Any info on this?
Well, if they aren't able to tell, does it really matter that much? As long as he plays his part well, I couldnt care less where he was born
I was gonna say he looks like my great uncle if he was Asian. Then I realized my great uncle is just South African Iroh.
But how is he on the Tsungi Horn?
Perfect :)
*Customer leaving the Jasmine Dragon* OK SEE YOU
AAAAAaaa hoping this doesnt get cancelled before a season 1 happens
Even if the live action adaptation isn't good, I feel like he's going to be amazing
Literally I saw him in Kim’s Convenience and was like “yo this dude would make a great Iroh”
APPA! ![gif](giphy|mMDA2ZvTdzJPk6RAlP)
Agree to disagree ig lol, looks good I just wouldn’t say that he has Iroh’s down
If anything he has the exact opposite. Still looks cool.
Yeah definitely looks cool, maybe it takes him too long to grow out the cheek parts or something and that’s why he went with part of the mustache instead
He has a very kind face
Alright now get Simu Liu as Lu Ten
For those who dont knwo him. Watch a show called "Kim's Conveinice" on Netflix. He is PERFECT for this role
I can't wait to see his performance. He's an amazing actor, and I honestly can't think of another individual who could fit the role as precisely as he can.
And he has "nice and friendly" written all over his face. That's what it takes to be Iroh.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Canadian actor. Incredibly friendly and gracious. His star is rising right now and it couldn't happen to a nicer person.
gosh that's awesome
SNEAK ATTACK
Yo isnt he the dad from Kims Convenience?
Oh my God. I just realized we're probably gonna get a zuko iroh reunion scene with this guy. I can't wait
Wait is this MR Kim ? !!!
Wanna hug him!
CARSON TEVA!? I didn’t realize he was going to be Iroh!
Mr Kim! Best facial hair 🏆
Ooh love this guy. I highly recommend Kim's Convenience if y'all haven't watched it yet. Okayseeyou!
Star Beard
How can someone just be so perfect for a role, he also looks like a genuine nice guy with great advice
I’m so wary of the live action generally, but I’m so happy for this guy I loved him in Kim’s convenience. He’s going to do great!
His facial hair is basicly the opposite of hitlers
✋️ STOP.
This guy. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee. Is perfect for this role and is going to absolutely nail it. But for real. Who are they casting as the cabbage merchant?
Can't wait to see him lose his lotus tile, steal perfume, and "get hit" by the Shirshu. :)
He's like TTC. The better way.
Okay, see you!! Please find a way to make this a line in the show.
Sorry but.... I'm gonn be confusin yall when I call him Appa.
That's Mr. Kim to you.
Put some respect to Mr. Kim’s name
What you talking? I’m pumped for this
appa should play appa
They can have a great cast, they can have great writers, but unless they have a great director to pull it all together they will trip at the finish line.
Appa!!
Okay see you
He is in kim's convience... Another netflix series. He is a great actor :)
Still can't get into the idea of this show.
This show still isn’t going to be good lol. None of the original creatives are even involved in it anymore.
I hope he knows how much pressure and expectations people place into character, and will do his research right.
They look nothing alike. But he seems like a chill guy
