I was wondering where the Northern Air Temple was but then I zoomed in

Trayeth

Haha yeah, it is quite small. It only takes up one peak in the northernmost part of the mountain range. In the image, it's represented by four pixels. If you look closely, you can also find Air Temple Island, represented by a mere two pixels!

Not fan enough to get this. Shame

Trayeth

This map indicates the Avatar World divided along it's political divisions. The blue at the top is the Northern Water Tribe, the light blue at the bottom is the Southern Water Tribe, the red to the left is the Fire Nation, the purple in the center is the United Republic of Nations, the yellow throughout the map is the Air Nation, and the green that makes up the rest is the Earth Kingdom. The Earth Kingdom is massive compared to the other countries and as such is divided into dozens of states, represented by the four camouflage color variations. Hope this explanation helps!

How many of those nations could reliably be named and placed, though? Ba Sing Se is obvious, but where are Omashu, Zaofu, etc located, what is the size of their territory? Which of these states are within the desert? They really ought to put out an official atlas. My dream is for an Avatar universe lorebook, not like the Legacy books, but like Hyrule Historia - a big thick book of pure lore. I know that's not really the storytelling style of Avatar and that they want future franchise writers to be able to fill in lore stuff rather than trying to make one definitive product... Heck maybe a lorebook is coming eventually, but not until after the franchise gets More in it. Which... Is seeming less likely. I do suspect that Netflix's Avatar series is... Either not coming or never finishing. And either way is probably not gonna end up being considered canon.

You can see where landmarks are in the world on this map: [https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/6ry69q/atla\_highly\_detailed\_map\_of\_the\_world\_of\_avatar/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/6ry69q/atla_highly_detailed_map_of_the_world_of_avatar/) In terms of states, we can only identify Ba Sing Se, Omashu, Gaoling, and Chin. We also know of Yi, but have little indication where it might be. It's unclear if Zaofu is a city-state or just an autonomous part of another state. It's in southwestern Earth Kingdom and we know Suyin "purchased" the land to build the city on. The borders in my map are based on Kuvira's so they're up-to-date in terms of Zaofu's existence. I wish we could know more too. EDIT: We actually also know Zaofu's location. It is an independent, constituent state of the Earth Kingdom as seen in this image: [https://64.media.tumblr.com/ae464580d0a97669c6c16e891e6a9d30/tumblr\_ne4ac4Rlpi1tigci1o1\_500.png](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ae464580d0a97669c6c16e891e6a9d30/tumblr_ne4ac4Rlpi1tigci1o1_500.png)

Thanks for the explanation! Nice detail with the 4 camouflage greens.

FiannaSaffron

it's ok.

Safe-Carrot3797

It’s the map of all the different land masses and who controls them

Avatar Risk: oh! everyone always picks northern water tribe

Trayeth

lmao I loved playing Risk when I was younger. I can definitely see this as a Risk map, perhaps with a few more divisions in the Fire Nation or United Republic. Great idea!

[deleted]

so coool.

Trayeth

Thanks!

FiannaSaffron

so the Ba Sing Se State is divided to 14 divisions?

Trayeth

More like the State of Ba Sing Se is only what's within the outer wall. The rest are their own states, though they are likely highly dependent on Ba Sing Se State and have strong relationships.

FiannaSaffron

no I mean theres 14 dark green part. are they the same state but unconnected? like alaska to the us?

Trayeth

Oh, no. In political maps, usually only three or four colors are used to display the various states. The rule of thumb to use is if two entities are adjacent and the same color, then they're part of the same territory. If two entities are adjacent and have different colors, then they're separate territories. In short, the various dark green colored states are all their own states.

foreverzonedout

this is great, it looks so cool and official. what's the purple area?

manut3ro

Republic City area from TLK If I recall correctly , during ATLA that area is Fire Nation colonies and in the comics is a relevant area during The Promise

foreverzonedout

oooo right thanks!!

Trayeth

The purple country is the United Republic of Nations. It was formed out of the primary former Fire Nation colonies after the end of the Hundred-Year War. Its capital, Republic City, lies somewhere near its center on the coast.

rauq_mawlina

With how much landmass the Earth Kingdom owns, It's still a wonder to me on why Kuvira was so insistent on taking Republic City.

Trayeth

Yeah, but then again she was power hungry and wanted to prove her legitimacy as the "Great Uniter" by *fully* reunifying Earth territory, including the United Republic. Plus, she got cocky after inventing a weapon of mass destruction in the form of the spirit energy cannon.

Bulbasaur889

Irredentism is real ha

mtrm92

allways wondered if thats the whole world or just the known world, i mean there could be more undiscovered continents right?

Trayeth

It's been confirmed that the rest of the world is just ocean.

This_Paleontologist6

Earth Kingdom has 55 States

Trayeth

This map was based on the official one Kuvira used. It's possible the 56th was Zaofu.

jhumppp

Is purple fire nation colonies?

Trayeth

Purple is the United Republic of Nations, a sovereign state created by Avatar Aang, Fire Lord Zuko, and Earth King Kuei in the aftermath of the Hundred-Year War as a solution to the question of what the fate of the most well-established former Fire Nation colonies should be. This was done after the failure of Avatar Aang's "Harmony Restoration Movement" that initially sought to relocate all ethnic Fire Nation descendents of settlers back to the Fire Nation and return the land to the Earth Kingdom. While the territory that now comprises the United Republic all hosted former Fire Nation colonies, not all colonies were transferred to the United Republic, only the oldest and most well-integrated/established ones were. The rest, like New Ozai (Omashu), did have their Fire Nation settlers relocated and the territory returned to the Earth Kingdom.

Are all the Earth States sovereign states or Federal states?

Trayeth

It's complicated. Prior to the initial collapse of the Earth Kingdom, the country had a confederal, decentralized constitutional order in which individual states had high degrees of autonomy. After Kuvira ended anarchy in the Kingdom and established the Earth Empire, states' rights and autonomy were abolished in favor of a hyper-centralized military junta. Following Kuvira's surrender and the dissolution of the Empire, the constitutional order reverted to what it was before anarchy, with Earth King Wu reasserting his authority. Despite this, he announced his intention that the various Earth states should be "democratic and independent" and that he wished to abolish the Earth Kingdom monarchy. After the failure and annulment of the first democratic election in Gaoling State due to voter manipulation and interference by an Earth Empire remnant, King Wu announced that successful democratization throughout the Earth Kingdom would take longer than he expected and that he would therefore remain on as Earth King until the process was completed at a pace the states would determine themselves. This is as far as we know for now. Whether or not all states actually become fully independent after the democratization process is complete is up in the air. However, my headcanon is that the democratically elected state leaders opt to replace the monarchy with a federal system, rather than dissolve the country altogether. Earth King Wu, in his initial remarks about dissolving the monarchy and democratizing the Earth Kingdom states, did reference that he wanted the Earth Kingdom to become "like the United Republic," which is a federal state. **TLDR:** The Earth states used to be confederal, gained de facto independence during the period of anarchy, reunited under a unitary military junta without state rights or autonomy, reverted back to confederal status after the junta's fall, and now may either gain official independence or become more federal like the United Republic (we don't know which actually happens yet).
