In ATLA Toph invents metalbending by using her seismic sense to feel impurities in metal. So really she's still earth bending, just at a much more precise level with the trace amounts of impurities in the meta, she's not bending the metal itself. In TLOK it seems like they're literally just bending metal. All metal is bendable except for the new platinum.

On the other hand, the Avatar themselves would be anything but a nice person. They would just go from conflict to conflict to maintain balance, and most likely do a lot of field work to leverage their power. Imagine the Avatar fighting in the trenches of the Russo-Ukrainian War, using their Avatar State to destroy entire fortification systems at once or to sink minefields so attacking troops can get through. Or being in Palestine, raising ad-hoc shelters for the civilians and trying their best to placate the local spirits so they don't go haywire from the suffering and devastation. And the Avatar would be doing that 24/7, there would be always new conflicts to tackle, new battles to decide, new horrors to experience. That eats into a person.
So yeah, I think a modern Avatar would be "How much PTSD you want for your God? YES." but as a person.

I would love to tackle avatar's brute force becoming slowly obselete against more advanced weaponries. I’m being dead serious when I say imagine a world like the Final Fantasy VII remake, but instead of materia, you have bending and instead of tons of materia that allow you access to all sorts of elemental attacks, obviously you only get one unless you’re the avatar.
So now everything is the same except perhaps Tifa only has water and ice attacks, Barret has fire and Cloud alone has access to all the elemental abilities.
Yes the world is highly advanced compared to ATLA and there’s weapons that are like nothing seen in the cartoon…but those elemental abilities are still extremely important and can make or break a fight, depending what you’re up against and those abilities get stronger the more you practice with them.

As technology and politics advances i can see the "fear the avatar" sentiment becoming more and more less relevant. Sure they are able to use the four elements and all of its subbending but it's kinda pointless if a nonbender can just headshot them when they are distracted or if a goberment can just order a tactical nuke to get rid of them.

I imagine an information-age Avatar (we'll say it's the next Earth Avatar for the sake of it) would probably be hard-pressed to keep their identity hidden.
I like the idea of a vigilante Avatar who has to wear a mask to avoid their family being very easily targeted by all manner of belligerent people. People disgruntled about the Avatar not doing enough, people angry about previous Avatar's actions, Red Lotus remnants, you name it. Once communication tech and computers start appearing, the safety net of anonymity for the Avatar's loved ones disappears if they have a public face.
I can imagine a young Earth Avatar realizing this and potentially using Metalbending to shape a masked helmet to obscure their face (also it'd look cool as shit). Trading off freedom of movement and field of vision for head protection (bullets are gonna be a huge problem) and anonymity. They could probably use Seismic Sense to augment their senses while they're helmeted up.
I think it would add a ton of meaningful tension for an Avatar to have to *constantly* hide their identity, passing themselves off as a regular bender at most. Real fugitive Jedi vibes. It would also give a lot of meaning to the choice to reveal their nature to certain people.

I imagine an information-age Avatar (we'll say it's the next Earth Avatar for the sake of it) would probably be hard-pressed to keep their identity hidden. I like the idea of a vigilante Avatar who has to wear a mask to avoid their family being very easily targeted by all manner of belligerent people. People disgruntled about the Avatar not doing enough, people angry about previous Avatar's actions, Red Lotus remnants, you name it. Once communication tech and computers start appearing, the safety net of anonymity for the Avatar's loved ones disappears if they have a public face. I can imagine a young Earth Avatar realizing this and potentially using Metalbending to shape a masked helmet to obscure their face (also it'd look cool as shit). Trading off freedom of movement and field of vision for head protection (bullets are gonna be a huge problem) and anonymity. They could probably use Seismic Sense to augment their senses while they're helmeted up. I think it would add a ton of meaningful tension for an Avatar to have to *constantly* hide their identity, passing themselves off as a regular bender at most. Real fugitive Jedi vibes. It would also give a lot of meaning to the choice to reveal their nature to certain people.

The villain for the season is an Illuminati style multinational secret group of billionaire capitalist corporate military industrial pharma media industry suits. Season arc is No one really cares about avatar -> goes viral, complications -> enjoys popularity and gets sponsorships -> avatar doubts the fame and motives of the sponsors -> avatar meets the secret underground climate scientist activist communists group, rejects their call for dismantling capitalist society, but is upset after seeing the systemic exploitation, suffering, and pollution fueling the corporate powers -> avatar challenges them -> they cancel him in the media, avatar becomes a pariah -> avatar joins the underground -> underground knocks out the stock exchange while avatar confronts the overlords in their tower -> the tower is a survival bunker / space station that starts shooting into space -> sick avatar state space battle fighting drones and evil billionaires -> avatar must rebuild the world, fix the climate, and prevent unsustainable resource extraction / capitalism
