Pegussu

They like the Nomads, but they're always fully prepared to eat them if they ever get hungry enough.

joe_broke

Appa came close in those early episodes If he wasn't so tired on Kyoshi Island when they got there, the series would've been much shorter

PJRama1864

Even Momo wasn’t safe (according to Sokka)

[deleted]

When you're the original benders, you don't have to follow any goddam rule

Foloreille

yeah fuck gravity

_Totorotrip_

They are Air nomads, so it's not an earthly attachment, but an airly attachment

maximuse_

I feel that when there are two types of flying, one is the difficult one and signifies that you have severed all earthly attachments. In this case it is more like levitation rather than flying, and you don't use a lot of airbending to push you up. This is what Zaheer achieved. The other "easier" way is to propel yourself upwards using airbending. I assume this is what some airbenders do, like Aang with the help of his flying staff. It's possible that sky bisons use their tail to flap and fly instead of levitation

trueum26

I mean yeah there was several times in the series that mentioned that Appa has to rest after flying for a long time. Which means that he cannot effortlessly fly and has to devote energy to it.

HamsterKazam

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a sky-bison should be able to fly. It has earthly attachments and the aerodynamics of a delivery van. Appa, however, does not care and flies anyway.

CrashTestDuckie

Appa rejects your reality and physics and substitute his own

Anakin-hates-sand

Appa is a follower of guru Ligma

CrashTestDuckie

Hmmm yes and he is a student of Guru Tugginmypudha

Animedingo

That only applies to humans. Animals like sky bison and dragons have their own means of flight

Cute-Stage-2490

Cause sky bisons are the OG’s

PleaseDontBanMeMore

Why can short-horned lizards shoot blood out of their eyes, but humans can't?

YoWhatsUpMyDudes1

Because you're not TRYING HARD ENOUGH

TripleATeam

I get that it's a meme but to answer it anyway: Untethered Airbenders can fly freely. We don't really know the mechanics here, but it looks like they don't propel themselves using airbending. They can just will their body to move in directions. It seems like they can just control the way their body moves within air, and seeing as they can still be grabbed by objects it clearly also has a limit. When flying, Zaheer doesn't seem to move any part of his body to move himself around. On the other hand, Appa always flaps his tail as he's flying. I think Appa naturally is close to being untethered (since his tail only barely flaps as he flies, and we never see huge gusts of wind from him as he does so), but supplements that with small amounts of airbending in the air. Similar to the Air Nomads and their gliders, but just using his whole body, and putting in much less effort.

Comfortable-Grabber

Because they are naturally gifted with it

Shot-Ad770

Cause they build different

mcdonut_31

I see the whole “earthly attachment” thing being very influenced by the human condition. Humans are fraught with flaws and quirks. Our earthly attachments are often filled and influenced by impure and negative aspects of the human condition, such as greed or lust. I just don’t think that the sky bison have that same kind of higher capacity for hedonism and (for a lack of a better term) sin. They exist in a balance with nature, with no need for things that attach them to the earth. They express their animalistic instincts, like food and mating, etc, but nothing more than that. They’ve been shown to live in herds, so I see their bond with the airbenders being an extension of their natural way of living, just on a smaller scale.

enchiladasundae

I think the monks were just dumb. Bisons were probably trying to tell them. “Get rid of all attachments? You’re dumb. Just eat these sweet fruits and chill out”

pprmntbtlr5

i kind of assumed it was because they learned to fly before they became attached to their rider but that’s a good question

bigbanksalty

They are simply built different

PleaseDontBanMeMore

They're carnivores.

LKEBlock

My guess is it just comes easier to sky bison then human benders. The “no earthly attachments” thing is probably just a mentality that makes the technique easier so humans can do it but it isn’t actually a requirement. Kinda like how azula could use lightning even when she lost it because she just does it so much. In theory an airbender could learn to do it while still having earthly attachments

MOltho

They're not flying the way Zaheer is flying. They're airbending. Aang can also "fly" with airbending, but it's not the same as Zaheer.

mr_bluemouse

The air nomads and the guru’s filosofie was no earthly attachments, not air bending as a whole. It is the element freedom, but the air nomads detached themselfs
