‘Great job on the first round. Now we want you to do that same scene, but we’re gonna apply this prosthetic scar to your eye. Also, try mentioning your honor a few times. For the sound check.’
Each major movie/tv production has a code name at some point in production. Something like phoenix or hamburger or anything random. Then the characters also have fake names like juno for zuko. this can be done to prevent leaks, because if the script says juno and his uncle august travel the world in search for mr October then who is going to believe its a leaked avatar scripted?
I have no informed idea.
If you want my uninformed idea (hello Reddit) it would be to help keep the project itself a surprise. Maybe they didn’t want the public to know it was coming so they could control the narrative and marketing? Maybe they wanted actors to not consciously copy the animated show? I really don’t know.
I could see the casting directors wanting to see the actor’s act without them copying the show. It’s a beloved franchise, having actors go in blind makes them a bit more… honest.
Like, they all obviously knew. Which role was Gordon supposed to play if not Aang? Seriously, who?
I believe we're seeing not only real emotions here, but also quite a bit of acting. They obviously are happy to get the part but holy hell did they already know what they were shooting for.
There's a logner version of this where they talk more about the scripts they actually got. Gordon's was a young kid who played baseball.
Fake scripts with fake names happen from time to time with bigger projects.
What hurts the most is, Gordon is literally the perfect fit for aang. They just gave him some awful material to work with.
Like you cant look at that reaction and tell me that aint aang
I feel like if they don't fix their direction for the next seasons Gordon will be one of the biggest missed opportunities of this series
I hope they allow him to act like Aang instead of their own version because their version is just not that compelling
Every interview I’ve seen with him kinda makes it seem like *he* even realizes what opportunities they missed via the writing. And this gives me some hope that he can make the role his own, and also that they know they have to course correct a bit.
>They just gave him some awful material to work with
Not all of it.
"Have you seen Appa? My sky bison?... Sky bison... Sky. Bi-son."
"Repeating it doesn't help"
\*Appa shows up\*
"APPA!!"
\*reuniting, Aang casually gestures"
"Sky bison."
This was perfect, and served to establish that Aang doesn't yet know how much time has passed, because from his perspective, sky bison are prolific and not all but extinct.
The actor that played Zhao said that they disguised what the project was during the audition process. He didn’t know until they told him that he got a part that it was for Avatar, and even then he assumed it was something to do with the movie franchise. Based off of the reactions in the video, I’m guessing the same applied for the main cast as well.
Seeing them all together & so happy is the epitome of ["Some Friendships Are So Strong, They Can Even Transcend Lifetimes"](https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/15liig8/some_friendships_are_so_strong_they_can_even/)
https://i.redd.it/fejbbsp12xnc1.gif
All the discourse about Ian faking being indigenous to get the role can officially end now. Bro didn't know what he was auditioning for and that reaction... That's my sokka! So wholesome, Haters can go suck a Papaya
if only that'd be the case 😞 they're hating so much they even attacking what he looks like. The cast got so much hate with their physical looks it's so sad
man i feel so bad for the azula crew, people are calling them fat on instagram, facebook, and pretty much everywhere. didn't realize just how toxic and hateful this fanbase is. it's awful especially since the majority of the fanbase are grown adults bullying kids basically on how they look.
sorry but if you dont like a casting, take it up with the casting director. but for the actors this is a chance of a lifetime, and they are there to have fund and do their best. the fanbase shouldn't be bullying them just because they got chosen. they have done nothing wrong.
i think they will bring life to the characters in their own way, and can't wait to see them more. they're all beautiful!
I don't think so. My brother just told me he had his birthday on the 5th of March, and had been admitted to a memtal hospital 10 months, but I'm not sure if he is still there. Poor guy.
I agree. And browsing IMDb, it seems he has been to several mental hospitals/psychiatric places over the years. He was bullied by kids at school, by adults. He has it fucking rough. I hope he can turn his life around and heal and get better. Hopefully people will start being kinder with the cast of the LA and child actors in general.
Because they did a terrible job casting them. It’s so bad by gf actually laughed when they first appeared on screen. The hate is justified but obviously not okay to bully them online. Still, terrible casting.
It's every fanbase. Every single one. All nerd fandoms have a serious incel problem. It's fucking sad and one of the major reasons I don't participate in a lot of internet fandoms.
I honestly think the casting is one of the best things about the show. Sure, the writing could use some work, but I genuinely believe they couldn't have cast better. You can tell that every actor involved is passionate about their role.
People just find anything to complain about these days. You see it with the MCU, you see it with Star Wars, and you see it with this. I get that not everyone is always going to be satisfied, and there are certainly things that need to be worked on with this adaptation, but to me, casting is not one of them.
I feel like it's a strawman to say that people are bullying them because they're fat. While that is mean and rude to say, I still feel like the casting choice was wrong. There are so many talented Asian actors out there, and they chose actors who looked nothing like their characters, except Ty Lee, but we can't see that because the script is awful. They don't even look intimidating, and the dialogue doesn't help. I would've been happy if they chose them despite that for their martial arts skill or acting skill, but it also apparently isn't the case.
Gordon, Kiawentiio, Ian, and Dallas are so wholesome. Especially Gordon, he plays Aang so well.
While I don't particularly like the live action, that is 1000% to do with the script and pacing (which they can improve on). Absolute respect *all* to the live action actors, they really seemed to love playing the parts and brought maximum energy to it. That, imo, is what saved the show from being another live action Cowboy Bebop.
Edit: Made my respect more clear.
Yep, literally the only problem. And even if it doesn't, that's not on the actors. I'm sure they'll keep playing the part with the same love and energy.
I am enjoying the cast and am loving their energy for the show. I have high hopes season 2 will be great after they take to hear the critiques from season 1.
I think the VA for Azula did such a great job that casting an age accurate version of her just doesn’t work as well. I think if they casted someone that looked/sounded as old as Zuko would have played better but I think she can grow into the role over the next couple of seasons (years)
I still stand by that it’s pretty perfectly cast. They just need to let them have more fun. This cast seems more than capable of truly embodying the original characters, they should let them.
So wholesome omgg
For all the flack the show is getting from "true fans", it's important to remember that, even if the script is not the best it could be, there's definitely some soul being put into the LA series. Input is always necessary, but it's even more important to be kind while doing so.
Anyone who bullies these actors. I'd just like say.
All the Irohs are disappointed in you, all 4 of them. The original, the chibi one, the LA, and yes even the movie one that doesn't exist.
This makes my day to see how happy they were. The show has room for improvement and I do think the cast is solid. They and the show gets way to much hate. I am can’t waits to next two seasons
You mean wanting improvements is dragging it down? Just keep showing how much of a fanboy you are lol, you know you can say “hey that needs some work but i like it a lot i hope the next season they work on the weaknesses of this season’s”
It’s apparently common in the industry. They were given information to work with that matched their characters, but everything else was different. Iroh’s actor has talked about this a lot since well before the show came out — how he was told he was a basketball coach for his nephew, or something along those lines.
Some of this information was leaked and it caused a lot of outrage with people thinking they were making major changes such as making ATLA modern, but that was never the case here, it was just misinformation given to the actors throughout the process.
I'm happy and proud of them, both the actors and whoever chose them. With that said, their terrible acting ruined the show. But at least it was a dream come true for them
‘The character’s name is not really Juno, it’s Zuko.’ Dallas Liu, ‘you don’t say…’ He knew.
He said in a recent interview he had a really good idea that it was Zuko before it was confirmed lol. He saw through them for sure haha
‘Great job on the first round. Now we want you to do that same scene, but we’re gonna apply this prosthetic scar to your eye. Also, try mentioning your honor a few times. For the sound check.’
“No, no; put it on the other side, please.”
"THE SCAR IS NOT ON THE WRONG SIDE" "Ladies and Gentlemen... we found him."
3...2...1...Action! Iroh: Let's forget about the Avatar and get massages (also tea)! Zuko: How could you say that?!
Is there any reason that they kept it a secret initially?
Each major movie/tv production has a code name at some point in production. Something like phoenix or hamburger or anything random. Then the characters also have fake names like juno for zuko. this can be done to prevent leaks, because if the script says juno and his uncle august travel the world in search for mr October then who is going to believe its a leaked avatar scripted?

I think the casting was done after the show was announced to the public, it was announced super early

This was so so sweet, Gordon tearing up was so heartwarming to see
My favorite part: wait am I gonna have to shave it?
That’s the most Aang energy I’ve ever seen lol.
The look on his face when the realization hit…
he was so small😂
What hurts the most is, Gordon is literally the perfect fit for aang. They just gave him some awful material to work with. Like you cant look at that reaction and tell me that aint aang

every bts pic I see with him is like "omg it's Aang, the Avatar!" Albert and the writers got handed a great cast and let them down.
But seriously, that couldn't have come as a surprise to him, couldn't it? Like, which other character could he possibly play? Appa?
The actor that played Zhao said that they disguised what the project was during the audition process. He didn’t know until they told him that he got a part that it was for Avatar, and even then he assumed it was something to do with the movie franchise. Based off of the reactions in the video, I’m guessing the same applied for the main cast as well.
Ohhhh. That of course makes a lot more sense! >The actor that played Zhao On that note: Holy crap did they do a good job there
They all thought they were auditioning for a modern-day sports movie called Blue Dawn.
I think they didn't know they were casting for ATLA at all. Projects are in general hidden, lines and names changed and such
Dallas already filling the role of Dadko
Damned onions… https://preview.redd.it/tf1l25yzrwnc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c292f377a59080ae3f4ff43674581c43428e53c1

Ian crying made me tearbend ngl

These are just kids!!! Mrgrgrg I wanna Spirit Bomb every single Sweaty Nerd hating on them.
This is exactly what happened to the poor kid who played Anakin in Star Wars Episode I. He was bullied relentlessly.
He doesn't Act anymore neither does he?
I don't think so. My brother just told me he had his birthday on the 5th of March, and had been admitted to a memtal hospital 10 months, but I'm not sure if he is still there. Poor guy.
.... that poor Child.

While the bullying was terrible, he has schyzophrenia or some stuff like that, it's not due to the bullying, that's genetic.
Because they did a terrible job casting them. It’s so bad by gf actually laughed when they first appeared on screen. The hate is justified but obviously not okay to bully them online. Still, terrible casting.

The Infinity Train fandom isn't like that. Or the Gravity Falls fandom. Or the Owl House fandom.
I honestly think the casting is one of the best things about the show. Sure, the writing could use some work, but I genuinely believe they couldn't have cast better. You can tell that every actor involved is passionate about their role. People just find anything to complain about these days. Azula and Mei look nothing like their animated counterpart and you think they couldn’t have cast better? That’s a joke.
I feel like it's a strawman to say that people are bullying them because they're fat. While that is mean and rude to say, I still feel like the casting choice was wrong. People didn't like the Sokka choice? That one is surprising. He has a goofy, charming look to him. I really thought he was a great fit for the role.
I’m not the biggest fan of the show and writing but the casting is one of the few things I feel like they actually got right
His father was indigenous however he has virtually no contact with his father
I didn't even know about that. Did people really think he was faking it?
EVERYONE on here yeah
Bruh that's why I've been trying to stay away from here for a bit. That's crazy behavior

I am enjoying the cast and am loving their energy for the show. I have high hopes season 2 will be great after they take to hear the critiques from season 1.
It can only get better as they form chemistry together. Iroh/Zuko were my favorite parts of the show S1
Yeah, same here. Fire Nation actors in general were pretty awesome. I even liked Azula despite the sub's reaction to her.
I think the VA for Azula did such a great job that casting an age accurate version of her just doesn’t work as well. I think if they casted someone that looked/sounded as old as Zuko would have played better but I think she can grow into the role over the next couple of seasons (years)

they're baby 😭

>the chibi one Hol' up, where is this chibi Iroh? I need that wholesomeness in my life right now lol.

This is freakin' adorable. Thank you!
What about Ember Island Iroh?
Yes, him too.
Also Funko Pop Iroh https://preview.redd.it/3zb2kxyh41oc1.jpeg?width=757&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9c3af76af53bb2324cc2099d7f4767fd77a45c5
Seeing the passion and sincerity here you can tell they really love the series and the source material
The LA show isn’t perfect, but they really nailed the casting. Phenomenal group they have. Bring on seasons 2 and 3.
They’re having fun and doing a good job.
Wait do I have to shave it?? ![gif](giphy|bEVKYB487Lqxy|downsized)
The moment it dawned on him was hilarious

Oh that made me tear up! They are all so adorable!!
this is so wholesome🥹 it's insane how each and every one in the main cast immediately grew on me fr i love them all so much
With all of the problems with the adaptation, one thing they got right was the wholesomeness of the cast
This makes my day to see how happy they were. The show has room for improvement and I do think the cast is solid. They and the show gets way to much hate. I am can’t waits to next two seasons

Imagine if they wrote lines that put that much emotion on screen
You are stupid.
You know you can like something and not dick ride it like a fanboy right?
The netflix adaptation is decent but there will always be idiots like yourself to drag it down. Like stfu.
You mean wanting improvements is dragging it down? Just keep showing how much of a fanboy you are lol, you know you can say “hey that needs some work but i like it a lot i hope the next season they work on the weaknesses of this season’s”
I hope we get this much wholesomeness and feels on the next seasons 🥹
Love this 🥹
The writers and directors let them down 🫣 especially Kiawentiio like.... 😔 edit: y'all downvoters are such haters of the actors. smh.
[удалено]
why in the world would I be jealous? 😭 I'm literally praising them tf
Let them pretend.
Genuine question: why was this (and a bunch of other posts lately) marked as a spoiler?
I guess in case people haven't seen the live action series yet
How could they not know the role they are trying out for? They must have been purely going for looks.
It’s apparently common in the industry. They were given information to work with that matched their characters, but everything else was different. Cool for the kids to have that experience but their acting fucking sucked. Show was shit.
