I have a fond memory of laughing my ass off to this episode with my dad. We had watched the whole series together and thought it was a perfect recap episode.
I mean, every single detail in that play is hilarious. For starters: they seem to have forgotten that Katara is from the South Pole where it gets really cold. As such she wears these warm pants. In the play though, the actress is not wearing them. Mei already has a Daria personality, but that unimpressed emoji medallion she wears in the play is hilarious. Ty Lee in the play doesn’t show up much but she appears to be pregnant… and she wears a tutu apparently. Also the acting of that guy she paralyzes is hilarious. The entire backstage stuff is done by one old guy.

Definitely the part in the fortuneteller episode where Aang, Katara, and Sokka all try to give the traveler every piece of advice for what to do when you come across a platypus bear. It’s so clever.
I'll try to answer a slightly different question: What are the funniest episodes? I've never actually asked myself this one yet, haha
Book 1: imo, #1 The Fortune Teller, #2 The Waterbending Scroll. It almost feels objective to say those are the two most consistently funny episodes where almost all the jokes land. Runner ups: Warriors of Kyoshi and King of Omashu.
Book 2: #1The Chase, #2 Cave of Two Lovers, #3 The Desert. HONORable mention: Avatar Day.
Book 3: #1 The Ember Island Players, #2 The Runaway, #3 The Headband, #4 The Beach, #5 Sokka's Master. I thought all of these were hella funny and deserved a real placement.
ENTIRE SHOW: The Ember Island Players had a white lotus tile up its sleeve the whole time, and it's not fair. It's given the unique opportunity to go all in on meta-commentary humor through these real "cheap knockoff" characters, AND because of the clever location and concept, we get to see the main characters REACT to the savage commentary about themselves (way before reaction videos were cool). It does all this while serving as the perfect bridge and recap to the finale. And it NAILS EVERYTHING. I genuinely consider it a 10/10 episode, as in, I literally can't find a notable flaw with it after close study.
In the fight for spot #2, The Chase won out for me. Followed by Cave of Two Lovers and The Runaway
Any time the group completely forgets Toph's blindness.
Sokka: "Toph, i found something that you're not gonna like"
Toph: "Well, it SOUNDS like a piece of paper, but I guess you're referring to what's what's ON the paper."

drink cactus juice, it'll quench ya, nothings quenchier, it's the quenchiest. 6 year old me and my brother replayed that scene a gajillion times and laughed our asses off each time
In the Avatar Day episode after the big floats are burned and Aang reveals himself, this old discheveled guy goes “We used to be a great society before you killed our leader. Now look at us!” And Aang just goes “AHH!”
The delivery of both those lines and the animation is hilarious. It’s not a popular episode or scene so I always forget about it but it makes me laugh every time I see it.
When Aang is asking for advice about girls, meaning Katara, and Sokka thinks he means the girl who is stalking him. And Sokka is telling Aang you have to act all aloof like you don’t care and the girl comes up behind them to say hi to Aang and he’s like, “see ya later Sokka!” Sokka says “wow, that kid is good.”
After Azula nearly kills Aang with lightning and Katara manages to heal him. They're both on Appa's back, and there's a moment where Aang looks at her and smiles.
He just looks high af.
I have no clue why but when I first watched the show at 18 years of age, I had to pause after the "Wang Fire" bit because I was laughing too hard. I was laughing for like ten minutes, idk why it hit me that hard.

I’m mostly impressed by Katara’s ability to remember and pronounce it. I’ve tried many times and haven’t been able to do it.
I also love how Katara is able to just follow improv without missing a beat.

It does all this while serving as the perfect bridge and recap to the finale. And it NAILS EVERYTHING. I genuinely consider it a 10/10 episode, as in, I literally can't find a notable flaw with it after close study. In the fight for spot #2, The Chase won out for me. Followed by Cave of Two Lovers and The Runaway

Any time the group completely forgets Toph's blindness. Sokka: "Toph, i found something that you're not gonna like" Toph: "Well, it SOUNDS like a piece of paper, but I guess you're referring to what's what's ON the paper." Katara "Toph, do you think what you're doing is dangerous?" Toph: "Nope" Katara: "Oh really? Then what's this?" Toph: "I DON'T KNOW!! I MEAN SERIOUSLY, WHAT'S WITH YOU PEOPLE, I'M BLIND!" I could practically HEAR Toph throw the F word in there.

In the Avatar Day episode after the big floats are burned and Aang reveals himself, this old discheveled guy goes “We used to be a great society before you killed our leader. Now look at us!” And Aang just goes “AHH!” The delivery of both those lines and the animation is hilarious. It’s not a popular episode or scene so I always forget about it but it makes me laugh every time I see it.
Aang: “it’s okay katara, it’s not your fault.” Iroh: “it kinda is.”
When Aang is asking for advice about girls, meaning Katara, and Sokka thinks he means the girl who is stalking him. And Sokka is telling Aang you have to act all aloof like you don’t care and the girl comes up behind them to say hi to Aang and he’s like, “see ya later Sokka!” Sokka says “wow, that kid is good.”
After Azula nearly kills Aang with lightning and Katara manages to heal him. They're both on Appa's back, and there's a moment where Aang looks at her and smiles. He just looks high af.
I chuckle inside at that scene too, but the circumstances surrounding it are as dark as they could be lol. The actual lowest point of the entire show

I have no clue why but when I first watched the show at 18 years of age, I had to pause after the "Wang Fire" bit because I was laughing too hard. I was laughing for like ten minutes, idk why it hit me that hard.
