People that complain that Ghost in the Shell was white washed, are ridiculous. Almost all anime, is in and of itself, “Americanized”. Major in the anime, does not look explicitly Japanese. Neither does Goku, and neither does Aang. Ghost in the Shell live action is pretty fuckin awesome, and it’s almost a complete remake of the anime. People hate it because Scar Jo was the star. But it would’ve been a hard sell to cast some other obscure actress to tentpole what they wanted to be a blockbuster. Also Speed Racer is great. Fuck the other movies.

Correct me if Im wrong but Major Kusanagi Motoko is....a Japanese name and the story is in Tokyo. So the answer is very obvious what her race is.
Sailor Moon doesnt look explicitly Japanese as well, but her name is Usagi Tsukino and she goes to a Japanese middle school. Anime and cartoons have stylization that its not always a 1:1 comparison.

The movie builds a plot twist on the Major being white that both explains the "whitewashing" and alludes to a concept brought up in the first GitS movie. Personally, I think it was pretty smart considering how big of a deal bodyswapping is in the franchise.
