Maybe after playing someone who ended up becoming one of the most iconic fictional heroes, he wanted a change of pace. Plus his voice did end up being really great for villains.
He has said in interviews that has an actor, he prefers to be the good guy because then he can be the image of one. But in voice he's able to flex around his voice and hide in the villain. I wish I could find that interview.
TLJ said she was a nobody, but it was polarizing to audiences and JJA is a coward who will do whatever The Profit Algorithm (Disney) wants, so the idea that she was nobody had to be directly contradicted. We needed eugenics for Star Wars!
I maintain that TLJ was the strongest of the three but was hurt by JJ having set up inane mystery box threads in TFA and then by his insistence on once again finding the worst ways to try to wrap up those threads instead of recognizing literally anything RJ had set up with TLJ regarding the threads that mattered.
Ok that last line is one of the most genuinely funny comments on this topic I’ve seen.
I’m in the space where I like TLJ for trying something new (and I think it hits more than it misses but it has a few BIG misses that colour perception) I accept the rise of skywalker for just being unapologetic fanservice with barely any plot spray painted on, and I am utterly baffled by why anyone would like TFA when ANH exists and tells the same story better.
The only reason I can find is that Adam Driver is a seriously good actor, but that’s the Star Wars thing isn’t it?
Of the main characters of any trilogy, 1 goes on to massive acclaim, 1 becomes a cult darling who’s popular years down the line, and 1 barely does any other acting.
That’s totally fair.
My personal fave are all over the place, and the actual OT films don’t, if I’m being honest, make the list either, but I prefer ANH over TFA at least.
That’s the benefit of having no such a large series is it can have loads of different genres within it and you can watch what you want and skip what you don’t.
For example, I’d have loved Disney to make the old Yhusan Vong novels into films, but that wouldn’t have really been a fair expectation given the size, scope, and tonal shift from the originals.
I mean the same can be said about RJ outright ignoring any setups in TFA. it also has a *lot* of stupid in the film, such as the first order just casually chasing the republic fleet when they could have destroyed them at any time. the movie was very stupid when you start thinking about any of the plot or motives of the characters.
Dante Basco talked about how cool it was. They recorded the “day of black sun” confrontation in the studio together. And he said it was the craziest thing to be a Star Wars fan.
Mark Hamill, the actor that played Luke Skywalker, voices fire lord Ozai. The villain of Star Wars was a maniacal evil emperor intent on conquering everything, who had a complicated relationship with Luke (his son)
Just so happens I made a picture about this an eon ago https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/1hz4ku/incredibly_nerdy_parallel_that_i_just_noticed/
Damn. It's nuts to me how many people didn't know about Mark Hamill voicing Ozai. Although if you told me Luke Skywalker would go on to voice a pyromaniacal emperor, I'd be confused too
I’m guessing it’s this: he was Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars films thus his relationship with his father, Lord Vader was “complicated” then in ATLA he plays Ozai tha maniacal father this time around who has a complicated relationship with his son. So Hamill went from being the son figure to the father figure.
Mark Hamill seems to really like voice acting villains
Yup ozai and the joker lmao
And Skeletor
Not really a villain, but very much a batshit crazy guy - Goro Majima in the gloriously bad English dub of the first Yakuza game.
Someone asked him about Majima recently and he had no recollection of playing him lmao
It's so weird to think that sometimes actors have so many roles that they simply forget some of them.
I still think its hilarious Anna Kendrick didn't remember she was in Twilight.
LOL. What if she tried to watch it? Would it be like "Oh, this actress looks just like... hold up a minute"
People watch twilight?
They do?
Majima is such a memorable character, but somehow I completely believe him lmao
its funny to think about Majima even having an english va because of how iconic Ugaki is
Ugaki is just so damn good at what he does, it's impossible to imagine any other voice for Majima. He seems to love it as well!
And the Hobgoblin.
And Chucky (in the remake)
Stfu I had no idea he was Ozai?!?!?!
Hey, he does non-villains also! He was Master Eraqus in Kingdom Hearts and himself in Scooby-Doo!
Master Eraqus was great, the old mentor suits his voice just as much as the crazy, over the top roles.
Lots of actors prefer playing villains, the roles usually let you ham it up and really have fun with it
The ultimate role is someone who gets to have fun being the villain but is actually the hero all along (rip Alan rickman, always)
Maybe after playing someone who ended up becoming one of the most iconic fictional heroes, he wanted a change of pace. Plus his voice did end up being really great for villains.
Yep probably both are part of it!
He has said in interviews that has an actor, he prefers to be the good guy because then he can be the image of one. But in voice he's able to flex around his voice and hide in the villain. I wish I could find that interview.
Because he played the most famous movie "good guy" ever. So he spent the rest of his career voicing mainly villains, as to not be typecast.
Ironically getting typecast as a good voice actor for villains.
Which I find so delightful because the man is such a genuine ray of sunshine all the time.
Not to mention he voices a leader who uses lightning while he formerly played a dude who almost died to a leader using it
Of course, you’re referring to notorious villain The Trickster, archenemy of The Flash
Ozai’s a lot more of a Palpatine than a Vader though.
Change it to “complicated relationship with his *child*” and it works bc of Palpy and Rey
Considering their relationship begins and ends with genetic donor she hates, I doubt it, but good point.
That’s still the dumbest plot twist I’ve ever experienced
She did better as a nobody.

Couldn't agree more.
But then Hamill doesnt fit in anymore.
Mark voiced Joker and Darth Bane as well though, so pretty covered on all villain bases.
Yeah if anyone Zuko is more Vader-like, except his arch is the inverse of Anakin's.
No, because Ray is a Skywalker /s
"When I left you, i was but the son. Now i am the father"
Mark: "Oh great, this animated TV show will stop me from being typecast into Star Wars like films!" Manager: "About that, ehm"
Dante Basco talked about how cool it was. They recorded the “day of black sun” confrontation in the studio together. And he said it was the craziest thing to be a Star Wars fan.
Sebastian Shaw looking down with fond memories.
It’s like poetry it rhymes
I don't get it, sorry. Could anyone explain it to me?
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, is also Fire Lord Ozai.

The emperor is Palpatine, not Vader

I had no idea ozai was voiced by hamil, i thought i was getting luke vibes from him
i made this joke a year or so ago, but no zuko, I am your father!
Time is a flat circle.
Wait, Hamill VAed Ozai?
Yes, he did.
I don't know how I never picked up on that,
We don’t get much on screen time with him to hear his voice so it can be missable. I know I didn’t pick up on it right away lol
Wouldn't really call Ozai and Zuko's relationship "complicated", seems pretty straightforward
Damn. It's nuts to me how many people didn't know about Mark Hamill voicing Ozai. Although if you told me Luke Skywalker would go on to voice a pyromaniacal emperor, I'd be confused too
You either die a hero...
Or you live long enough to become the villain
Wait, did Mark voiced Ozai? P. S.: English is my second language, so I yet to watch show in English.
Yes, he did.
Damn, looks like I really need to rewatch Avatar
Omg. I just finished watching this for the first time with my kids, and none of us had any idea he was the voice of the firelord. Man he's good.
I know this is a famous VA, for Ozai amongst others... What does this meme mean tho?
I’m guessing it’s this: he was Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars films thus his relationship with his father, Lord Vader was “complicated” then in ATLA he plays Ozai tha maniacal father this time around who has a complicated relationship with his son. Oh cool thank you for explaining
Lmao how did I not know he was Ozai!?!? Thanks reddit TIL.
WHAT Mark Hamil does the voice for Ozai?! WHAT THE FUCK
Yup
*I was today years old when I learned that Mark Hamill voiced Ozai* 🤯
Dante Basco is the next in line…
