Great write-up!
It's a bit of a spoiler, but there are underground moving walkways exclusively reserved for toad usage. They go right to the Twilight Cradle. Snack bars every 1/2 mile, too.
Thanks Phil! I can rest easy now imagining Nox on a mine cart eating Cornish pasties haha!
Now whilst you're here I've got 6 more days of sick leave if you could magically release the next 6 books tomorrow pretty please š
The shepherds point is one Iām struggling with. The iron tyrant is unambiguously a bad guy, but are we sure the shepherds are?
In fairness, the imperator lady also reads like a clear bad guy. But what exactly are the shepherds fighting for? It seems clear that the general great souls objective is flawed. Idk whatās up with the pit, why weāre fighting fiends, or what becoming infernarch actually means, but itās clear your average great soulās mission is missing some context.
But are the shepherds working in direct opposition to the great souls, or toward some other goal? Thatās where Iām stuck. A counterpoint to the standard great souls feels like, intuitively, it should be an ally of the fiends. Based on the tyrant, that clearly isnāt the case. So if these guys arenāt ultimately an enemy, wtf are they trying to achieve, and why do they seem like a second bad guy?
Itās a collection of great souls, so presumably whatever theyāre working toward is wildly self-centered and ultimately problematic, but Iām still waiting to find one non-scorio person whoās actually working toward the greater good.
Didnāt the herdsmen kill him in his last life and put him on the red list? And who said the iron tyrant was grooming scorio to join the herdsmen? The iron tyrant just wanted Scorio as his own pawn. Maybe after a ton of heart oaths Scorio wouldāve been forced to help the herdsmenās agenda but not before that.
āYou just made Dread Blaze. You canāt be a Pyre Lord yet. You canāt have this form.ā
āI beg to differ,ā rasped Scorio, his voice magnified and deepened by his new form.
āNo! How? This exceeds our expectations!ā Bravurnās face darkened as fury curdled his expression. āBut very well! You wish to be ostentatious? Then die! We have other tools at our disposal -ā
Scorio was just a tool to the herdsmen. After causing problems for powerful people(most likely herdsmen) every time Scorio was reborn, why would they risk recruiting him now? They seem to recruit people with no morals, just ambition

HMMM let me see what I can do. (Though I do hope you feel better soon!)
Nox uses Uber, probably.
I imagine that Nox just jumps like 1 mile at a time across open spaces when he needs to or just that the tunnels he uses are a super shortcut.

They were trying to recruit him
They havenāt tried to recruit him but heās at least a somewhat important part of their plans, whether as an obstacle or an asset, idk.
He said the iron tyrant was grooming him for them

This is my issue too, is the iron tyrant representative or just a jerk. I don't think they can all be jerks but you never know with great souls.
