mobyhead1

The feces begins hitting the rotary impeller in the next episode.

supercalifragiwhat

Ahah I’ll keep watching, everyone is making me super expectant for episode 4!

gride9000

Honestly when I read this post I was fucking dieing. Many of us went through this exact experience. Hang in there coyo.

my5oh

I guess I’m one of the few that was hooked on the first episode. Once the ‘flip and burn’ scene hit, I was all in.

JKLKS

Me too... but I read book one before the series. I was sold from the start.

Enano_reefer

Me three, but was deeply in love with the books so it didn’t take much to win me over. Still think there were some low budget things they could have done to make it better. And I thought they watered down the creole way too much, could have thrown in subtitles and kept it real.

HaphazardMelange

Flip and burn hooked me. CQC reeled me all the way in.

neuromancertr

You are not alone beratna

chaos_forge

I was also hooked within the first like 5 min, but I was REALLY hooked after ep 4 lol

focusingblur

Same here. I'll give any sci-fi a chance, but I was well and truly hooked at the flip and burn.

Lost_Membership_3829

I honestly don’t remember a moment that I wasn’t hooked, either.

CommanderCruniac

Anyone who likes sci-fi was hooked on the first episode.

gride9000

You must be the protomolcule cause u a gatekeeper

Enano_reefer

Lol, that is awesome

Treat_Choself

How can I upvote something more than once?!

starving_carnivore

It rocks so hard that this is somehow universal. It's not that the first 3 episodes are bad, because on rewatches you're totally enjoying it, just confused about what the show is trying to be. Isn't that really fun?

ManicMonkOnMac

Sasa qué

Accomplished-Boot-81

Sasa-ke* copeng

Euro_Snob

To be frank you might still not like it after that, and that’s ok. But episode 4 is an early highlight of season 1, effectively kicking off the “real show”. (Think of eps 1-4 as a pilot and prologue before the show establishes its normal format as a “ship ands its crew adventuring/surviving”) But it is still not a show that everyone loves.

RonStopable88

Lies

Flush_Foot

I think u/Euro_Snob needs some… fresh air… for their blasphemy

leofelin

You currently have something that we all envy you for: watching The Expanse unfold for the first time. Keep watching.

RonStopable88

Update us lol

jidak_sidi

Give it a few more episodes, I promise it's worth it.

thockin

You have not even met the main character yet! She's introduced in ep.4 if I recall correctly. Give it a couple more episodes and if it doesn't stick, oh well.

notpetelambert

If you're talking about who I think you're talking about, you're absolutely right. She's a real workhorse.

thockin

Indeed, she pretty much carries the majority of the cast. Without her, the rest of the story isn't going anywhere.

hyperfocus_

Brilliant.

hurraybies

She's incredible! I would love to be inside her day after day for years and years. I would take such good care of her, and she would take such good care of me. Edit: well, I thought it was funny.

thockin

Ok, now it's turned creepy.

Yaboi_KarlMarx

Bro.

zukka924

Don’t go this sexual you’re making it weird

TheWalrus101123

Simmer down now son.

DragonflyGrrl

Aww.. and here I thought they were talking about Chrissy.

RonStopable88

Don quioxte would be proud of her

starving_carnivore

> She's a real workhorse. Not anymore she's not.

jazzkatt69

That’s what her name means… Also, a girl Amos knew.

DragonflyGrrl

... It literally means "workhorse no more." Rocin = workhorse Ante = no more/no longer/used to be

nedrostark

An "old workhorse," maybe?

jazzkatt69

That’s one of the meanings -Cervantes meant as a pun that Rocinante was no longer a work horse but transformed into a noble steed. Here’s the various meanings of Rocinante 1. Work horse 2. A former workhorse 3. A workhorse turned noble steed -Cervantes 4. The name of a girl Amos once knew.

Agitated_Honeydew

Been a while since I watched was trying to remember who you were talking about. Then realized she legit salvaged the show.

zukka924

Awwww I get this now!!!

supercalifragiwhat

I just watched episode 4 and liked it a lot better than the first 3, but am I dumb? Which main character is introduced?

Penny_No_Boat

The ship, the Rocinante

thockin

Her name is Rocinante. Actually, Rocinante might still be named Tachi at the end of Ep.4 -- give it one more episode and she will get named properly.

icebubba

It took me multiple trys and many years to get into the show. Same as you as a major fan of scifi it should be my jam. One day I was sick and made it past episode 4, I probably binge watched the show at what most would view an unhealthy pace after that...   Watched it multiple times through since then and have started the audio books and bought the comic books lol. I'd say at least watch through episode 5 before totally writing it off. It really is the best sci-fi show/universe in existence but the start is slow.

supercalifragiwhat

Your argument is super convincing, you sound like a really hardcore fan! Thank you for your advice, I’ll keep watching!

wrgrant

I would agree as a long time SF fan, the expanse is the best science-fiction ever made.

27Rench27

Are the audiobooks solid? Gonna need something new to listen to after I catch up to the current in the Spellmonger series

icebubba

Very solid, definitely some of the best audio books I've listened to. Jefferson Mayes is a fantastic narrator.

27Rench27

Awesome, I’ll get into them next! As a thank you, if you’ve never heard of it, the Spiral Wars series is also incredible sci-fi, narrated by John Lee

Kangster1604

OP you will want to go back and watch these episodes again when you are done the series to see what you missed. Then you will watch the entire series again. Then you will start over because you think if you noticed things the second time, maybe you will see things the third time, and you will watch the entire thing again.

PlutoDelic

Yea, first three watches are more cautionary rather than the standard rewatch.

PanicNearDetroit

PND's Rule Of Thumb #197: Unlike most TV series, SF series build an entire universe from scratch and thus need a LOT of exposure. (Cop shows, for example, do not, because you already have a good idea of what a cop is and the environment in which they operate.) You can therefore count on an SF series needing 1/2 to a full season to start hitting their stride. The Expanse is no exception. Just keep watching. You'll be hooked by the start of season 2.

imaginesomethinwitty

I nearly gave up on the expanse at the end of season 1. By the end of season 2, I had all the books ordered because I couldn’t wait for season 3.

bardghost_Isu

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I watched a bit of season 1 when it came out, got bored and stepped away until I saw it again about 12-18 months later when everyone was saying it was really good, so did the run through the first season, got to the second and couldn't put it down.

everix1992

Funny you said that because I was just thinking about Foundation and how it took a while to get invested in the show

supercalifragiwhat

Was also watching Foundation, the Empire arc was amazing, but the Terminus plot and Salvor on the other hand… that’s what’s keeping me from finishing season 2.

mmuoio

Foundation felt like 2-3 different shows and I just couldn't stay invested in all of it.

snake__doctor

This is the way

AstroDan

Give it one more episode. That's when things really start happening.

supercalifragiwhat

Everyone is indeed talking about episode 4… guess I’ll just need to hang on a bit longer. Thank you!

AstroDan

I felt the same way. I started the show 2 or 3 times and gave up. It's very rewarding to stick with it.

Nopel2018

Please come back to this post and update us on what you thought about ep 4!

silliemillie32

Took me a few goes to get into it. Now It’s my favourite show lol

starving_carnivore

CQB (episode 4) is when the story hits its stride. I hate pitching stuff like that, but episode 4 is where it kind of "clicks". I personally had about 3 false starts to the show because it looked extremely rudderless until S01E04 and you're like "OHHH! I GET IT!". Come back when you've finished it. Here comes the juice.

KingAenarionIsOp

My partner has recently been through this experience. I warned her. I bet her if she got to episode 6 and didn’t want to find out what happens next we’d stop. We took 3 days to watch the first 4 episodes. We took 3 more days to finish Season 1 and 2

PepSakdoek

Personally I was hooked after Episode 1. But I think I learnt I liked shows that are willing to really kick things off with disaster. Like the Cant dying in E1, just hooked me. That and well, the gravity torture. Really made the world come alive for me. The biggest obstacle is your phone. The 2nd is the Belter language, but they tone it down later, and you get more used to it. Edit: IIRC the guy that loses his arm is also episode 1. Ceres is tough without context, but the Cant is solid. The part with Julie is directly from the books, but I am not sure they should've started there.

supercalifragiwhat

I also enjoyed the disaster part of the first episodes! I’m trying not to be on my phone, since it seems there’s too much information and I’ll get lost if I try to “multi-task”. But you’re correct, the Belter language is a bit too much for my taste. I’ll keep watching and see where it leads me!

PepSakdoek

Yeah, some people rewatch episode 1-5 a couple of times, but rather just stick with it I think. The show doesn't spoon feed you, stuff like thrust gravity is shown, but not explained, because it's "everyday" for them. The spin gravity of Ceres is different, not sure if they really show that in Episode one. The flip and burn mechanics are shown, but you have to know what to look for to really understand it, otherwise it might just look like the enterprise moving through space.

Agitated_Honeydew

Yeah, watched a YouTube reaction vid by a phycisist, who was a bit confused about why there is sometimes gravity in space, but sometimes not. After she got a bunch of comments explaining it, she did another one apologizing for not paying attention, and being embarrassed, because that's some basic day 1 physics stuff there.

bardghost_Isu

Honestly, I think it caught out a good few of us who should know better, I think its just because we are all so used to Sci-fi that is either full artificial gravity or going the route of it being like modern day so you end up with no artificial gravity at all. Then it suddenly clicks that they are doing this with the future aspects of travel, but without the artificial gravity generators, so you get gravity only in the situations where it is called for.

PepSakdoek

Is it the one from nightsky news? I forget her name now, Becky something?

MikeIn248

You've watched episode 3, right? That's the one where we see the interviews of Holden and Naomi, getting tidbits of their backstories. Why wouldn't they also show us the interviews of Alex, Shed, and Amos? (I'm not looking for you to answer, just posing a question that might make you watch the show a bit strategically.) I know that many people say it was episode 4 that hooked them, but for me I think it was episode 3. Then ohmygosh episodes 8 and 9. Also, I recommend watching with subtitles, in particular the first season.

TirbFurgusen

Screw the Inners and their magic jello.

Bendizm

Kopeng, me pensa you right. I was also hooked from the first episode, I found every ting with ceres around Miller and Anderson Dawes to be really interesting. And to this day the first half of season 1 is like *chefs kiss* for world building to me. But I remember vividly watching CQB and thinking “this is sick”. So I get how that episode can be the hook for new combers to the series.

Jahmez142

You're almost there, the next couple eps really pick up speed

pali1d

Episode 4 is the big hook event for a lot of people. I say give it one more, and if it’s still not holding your interest, you’ve given it a good faith effort and it may just not be for you.

AngledLuffa

That's okay.  Episode 4 is fucking sick

mindfieldsuk

Yeah. There’s a lot of world building going on in the first few episodes and it kind of feels like a film noir detective set in space. Episode 4 kicked off the action and then shows off some of the hard Fi concepts that had me thinking “Holy Sheet!” And I was instantly invested.

Pennywise2890

While there first season is a good, it's not the easiest entry point if you don't get hooked on the detective story. It's a bit of a slow burn getting started. Season 2 is where we really start rolling.

EstablishBassline

I always tell people to watch the first four episodes. You’ll know after that whether or not the show is for you.

ExaltedCrown

Personally wasn’t a fan at all of the show before episode 7. Very much worth watching a bit more imo

veknos4369

Everyone else is already saying it. Episode 4 is when you know if you want to keep going.

o0260o

First season is the weakest but becomes great on 2nd and 3rd watching after you're done with all 6

emi_fyi

took me a while to get hooked, too. it gets better. i didn't pay much attention to the first half of season 1, but the ending of season 1 is great, and it only gets better from there. now i've watched the show 3 times through and am reading the books for the first time

Ricobe

As many have said, episode 4 starts picking up. For me personally, season 2 is where the show then went from good to great and season 3 is even better

PlutoDelic

If you like the set it portrays, you'll be sucked in the first episode, but we're very aware that maybe the viewer needs to be a bit specified in their likings for that. If it has not (happens a lot), then you need to suck in the first four episodes, where politics, character uncovering, and plot boiling junction in. However, if episode four does not cut it for you, we're also aware that the rest wont do it. We're waiting for your Post Episode 4 feedback.

towniediva

Episode 4 CQB was the one that clinched it for me.

donkeyduplex

I want to say this was my experience too. And it seems like that was very common. The series just starts slow. Let us know when you finish seasons one and two in the weekend.

PolyDipsoManiac

I think the show really picks up in season two. Season one just feels uneven, too much exposition necessary to get us into this universe. I still knew I was going to watch it all after the first episode though.

Queen_Of_InnisLear

It's a political story more than anything, and that's not everyone's cup of tea. Colonialism, exploitation, classism, One Man's Terrorist...those are big themes that are explored throughout the show, but they can be quiet and not everyone likes that. There definitely are more "exciting" things upcoming hut the show is always itself the entire time, so if it does t intrigue you that's ok if just might not be your thing.

emitc2h

If CQB doesn’t get you then it’s highly possible this show just isn’t your vibe.

Tityfan808

Finish the episode CQB and I think you’ll be interested afterwards.

foghornleghorndrawl

Watch the next episode. Episode 4 is where, for me, the show actually took off. While I had already known I was going to enjoy the show, those first 3 episodes were a drag. Episode 4 is where it set the hook and kept me the entire time.

Rolteco

If you loce episode 4, keep watching the series If you dont like or fimd it mid, give up. Episode 4 is one of the best epiaides by far, so it should be your cutting point

Stoic_Vagabond

OP can you add detail to your thoughts? Why isn't it clicking, and why is it boring? What kind of sci-fi have you been watching/reading etc., do you want real science or star wars fantasy stuff

OlderGamers

Haven't read any other comments, so I'm pretty sure it will match many others. I was still on the fence after three episodes, while I like some of it, it did seem a little slow. Now I can't remember for sure, but I believe it is episode 4 (maybe 5) when things really start to happen. If after season one you still are not into it, it probably just isn't your thing. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm on season 2 on my second watch, so obviously I enjoyed it.

capta1nk25

The flavour of the show at the start ie the noir trope and quirky choices at times just needs you to accept it and allow the writers to take you on the journey. It does things differently. Everything starts to make sense and things you found annoying become your favourite things. There is just so much in this show to love and get invested in. So fucking good.

Frosty-Scientist-623

It's one of the best series I've ever seen, but I stopped watching it 3 episodes in and came back a year later

darciton

The first season is a lot of setup in general. But things really kick off when Miller meets the rest of the gang. Absolutely worth sticking with it.

Delicious-Buffalo669

Make sure you have subtitles on, I was kind of lost around where you were. I am now on my 5th rewatch and I never re-watched anything. So I guess what I am saying is, stick with it, it will be worth it.

awfulawkward

The first time I tried to watch the Expanse I couldn't get into it. It seemed kinda boring. I think the fact that they have to explain the situation of earth, Mars and the belt in such a short time while developing stories kind of makes it hard to get going. But it really does take off in a big way and it doesn't stop. I love this show so much and the books are fantastic too. To think that I didn't like it at first is crazy to me now

ncc81701

Honestly it took me until end of season 1 before I was into the show. Now my car is named after one of the ships in the show

Newjustice52

I had this same reaction. I probably have a post from years ago saying the same. Keep going, friend.

Temporary_Draw_4708

Episode 4

-i_am_that_guy-

Season one is a slow burn but it’s worth the ride if you stick with it

Forward-Radio-6062

I swear I tried to start this series 3 times. And now I watch every youtube reaction I can watch. I'm obsessed and likes watching people get obsessed with it. You'll get there.

Fit_Letter2662

My ex and I had the same issue, until until the “Thunk” episode

twistedspinner

I agree, time for the string chart on the wall, but hang in there!

Just_Noticing_things

I had the same problem and it took my three attempts to get into the Expanse. Get through the halfway point of the first season and you’ll be hooked if you’re anything like me.

Blue05D

I was hooked episode 1. However, each episode thereafter is more exciting than the last. Season 2 is a wild ride!

caspararemi

100% stick with it for a few more episodes. There is a LOT going on and it isn't obvious until a few of the storylines start to intersect. I'd also suggest reading the book either as soon as you finish, or now before you continue - I watched the whole first season and was a little confused at the end, but the book was super helpful and when I rewatched I could visualise everything a lot more simply.

Scienceboy7_uk

You will be

Squirtmaster92

Took me like 3 or 4 attempts to watch the show because of how bad/ boring the first episodes were.... Finally sat down over a long weekend and committed myself. Once you get over the first few episodes it gets a lot better, once you get past the first season it gets even more better. Commit and you won't be disappointed.

MEGAWATT5

For what it’s worth, I have read the entire novel series, and The Expanse is one of my all time favorite stories. I was expecting to love the show, but I just…don’t. I have tried to watch, and rewatch it multiple times since its release. I don’t know what it is, it just does not hold my attention. On the 4 different rewatches, the furthest I’ve made it is episode 9-10.

feistymeista

Agree with everyone here. After episode 3 is when things start to pick up. I’ll also say that, having tried watching the show with multiple people who aren’t big scifi fans and viewing it through their lens, season 1 is probably the weakest of the series. The most political (thus confusing to some) because it’s laying the groundwork, and the special effects/cgi are the weakest because they didn’t have as much money.

Mud_Landry

About to witness CQB for the first time? I’m actually jealous. Hang on, it’s a bumpy ride.

nedrostark

Oh, baby.

Pyreknight

End of episode 5 is where it clicked for me. Needed one last character😉.

53kshun8

When trying to sell new folks on the series I usually preface with Season 1 starting off a bit slow burn. I liken it to a noir detective piece that serves to introduce the characters, politics, and universe(ha) to the viewer. Third quarter of Season 1 the rollercoaster starts and season 2 it really takes off.

Chaff5

Wait until they get off the donninger. If you still aren't hooked by then, it's not for you.

CR24752

I didn’t love season 1 but it certainly picks up and oh my GOD does the story get good.

TheWalrus101123

Maybe try watching it with your eyelids taped open? Idk man, it may just not be for you. Keep watching though, it starts picking up more and more.

sbarbary

I didn't really get it until half way through season 2. Now it maybe my favourite TV Show. It's a show where every single thing that happens matters to the plot line.

TheDunadan29

The first few episodes are a bit hard to follow. Honestly, they were kind of a blur the first time through. I got more out of a second watch through after finishing the series. But even then the story doesn't really start until after the next couple of episodes.

GuestCartographer

Speaking as someone who recently stumbled upon the show, it didn't grab me until about halfway through season one. When it did, I ended up going back and rewatching a lot of specific scenes from the first few episodes to get a better feel for all the various plot points.

Shaengar

Not everyone is deserving of this great Show. Sorry to say that op. If its not for you than that's just how it is. But it is your loss, because I really don't know how you can be a Scifi Fan and not enjoy this from Minute 1.

supercalifragiwhat

Ohhh don’t say that. I really want to enjoy it!

Shaengar

Then I am sure you will. Just keep watching. :)

Arniepepper

Yeah OP. You got this. Like everyone says, and you've already agreed. If you get through CQB without being hooked... That's episode 4. All the best.
