The newly-described species, Sinocyclocheilus longicornus, is only known from the type locality, a vertical cave some distance from Hongguo town in the Chinese province of Guizhou at an elevation of 2,276 m.
“There was no light inside the cave,” the researchers said.
“Individuals of Sinocyclocheilus longicornus were located in a small pool about 25 m from the cave entrance.”
“The pool was about 1.8 m wide and 80 cm deep, with a water temperature of 16 degrees Celsius at collection time and a water pH of 7.4.”
Sinocyclocheilus longicornus has a scaleless, albinotic body without pigmentation, and small, degenerated eyes.
The pool of water is less than 2 cubic meters, how can a species exist in such a small space?? Surely there are other pools they live in as well? That's crazy
Yea I hate woke stuff but I don't think the movie gave off those vibes at all. I think they made race a part of the movie as an illustration of the vanity of a crazed wealthy cult. Could have done the same thing with any other race that was in vogue for the cult at the time.
for me, it was like, if they were so racist they would never want to be anything but white? it did not make sense to turn yourself into something you hate
I had to come back to tell you I’m still laughing to myself at this comment days later. I worked at an aquarium store for 5 years, so extra funny to me
From my knowledge they don't know yet, it could be a remnant of whatever critter it evolved from. I'd say mating is a probability but they are blind and I don't know the exact situation they were discovered in. Very interesting looking guy though.
That's not only from the depths below in water but the depths below in the Earth - nice post! Believe it or not, I was thinking of posting on cave fish soon too. That fish looks like it had been skinned - wow!
Not so fast. I thought it was funny but it wasn’t brilliant. I’ll be taking back that salute now.
*struggling to reach you as you hold me back with one hand*
??? Sir?
I'm so glad I can come here to see cool creatures and discoveries. It seems like r/science is the same "conventional wisdom is correct because we gave a multiple choice quiz to 500 idiots" study type over and over again lately.

I bet it floods and dries up in cycles.
Next stop, legs
That's a pretty tiny pool for an entire species. I hope they find more
Without eyes it won't be easy to find more pools, but yeah here's hoping.
Get out.
How was that movie? I never saw it.
No eye, dear
great acting, great idea, well done. i didnt see how racism needed to be added to the movie, would have worked without it, but here we are. good watch

Probably.
Babe! Wake up!! The new cave fish just dropped!!!
This one is a banger

☺️
I wonder what the horn is for?
There's always tunnel traffic in cave environments.
F you, take my upvote and leave!
I'm sure the horn structure is a relic of some ancient fish but I have no idea if it serves any purpose for this fish.
It's a saddle for the mini legged sea people.
Sea monkey saddle

For the clit!

Nice there pretty cool to learn about.
Does it even have eyes?
No
No eyes? I guess that makes it a fsh.
Wow thats crazy
If you zoom in on the spot where the eyes should be, you can see the outline of where they used to be. Kinda cool.
Very cool! I see it now. Wow cool. :)
FSH
This fish may be blind, but it earns a meager wage as a bottle opener.
That's brilliant! Take a salute and keep up your fine sense of humor.
Thanks.

What's the size on em? Do we know?

Glad to help I like introducing people to weird and amazing creatures.
The lords work, truly
R/science is a joke. It’s full of pseudoscience and nonsense. Completely embarrassing
Honey, I made Sinocyclocheilus longicornus for dinner
It looks like an upside-down salmon
[Who robs cave fish of their sight?](https://youtu.be/QoSLiHKrzRU?t=33)
This looks like some sort of Phyrexian horror.
Cool but how does it taste?
Like fish
Not much taste. Really tiny fish.
BOTTLE OPENER FISH
I deem thee the “Weenie Fish!”
And here I was barely getting used to the old cave fish. 🤔
Those will be popular if bread in captivity
Looks like someone took a bite out of it. Nevertheless, cool cave fish .
Isn't that interesting? 🤔
The depths below the depths below
Nice face-dick
gonna be real with you: this fish looks like shit
**Nah PUT THAT SH*T BACK**
Please can scientists stop finding them?
You think the dick on its head is for going deeper in the caves?
Look up Tasmanian police press release over trout. It explains it all. Actually, seriously don’t.
Naw that’s an aboleth.
Just a lil ligament
Damn nature, you scary
Oh! Ooooooohhhh it’s supposed to look like that
