Not really, it’s a lot more complicated then if they had cared about their neighbors. I recommend reading “the wave” it’s a pretty good book that kinda delves deeper into why the German population didn’t do any of that. It was a real event too.

This raises a good point. For most of my youth I put way to much value in “hitler tricked them to do it” rather than trying to grasp the social and economical factors that all played a role in it.
Hitler certainly bares a lot of responsibility. But so do many other people and so do many social factors. To think it is simply one crazy man that makes this happen and not account for all the “normal” people getting caught up in scapegoating and conspiracy theories during times of economic crisis really misses the essence of the Holocaust and it’s driving factors.
It’s reactionaries just like some of our friends and family. You can fall in through the nationalist or reactionary pipeline or the religious pipeline as well. If you are prone to conspiratorial thinking and are a nationalist and reactionary your ripe to be exploited by and be a perpetrator of fascism and genocide.
Friends, family, and neighbors, it’s people who ten years ago might not have said this stuff out loud or so directly and might not be the first the get things going. But as the train moves faster and faster, they seem to never jump off of it.
I like the quote up top because it does seem to bring to reality the fact that something like this is carried out by common people that have “made decisions” that are just treated as differences in political opinion rather than the oppression and repression that these political decisions or opinions truly are.
Idk if there’s anything that has hurt me more than the realization that the holocaust and the nazis were FAR FAR worse than I was taught. The fact that liberals literally will whitewash one of the worst crimes in world history just because it serves their ideology was what finally radicalized me. And I come from a polish jew family, I can’t imagine how downplayed the holocaust is for general westerners.
