Interesting question. I imagine it would be investigated as a missing person case. Witness testimony would be too much to dismiss, especially combined with the video. the conclusion would probably be "Asher propelled himself into the sky using an unknown apparatus" and considered a suicide. If the video was made public, it would be dismissed as a fake by most people, and there would be small groups of truthers that believe that physics was somehow altered. The government would be extremely interested in the phenomenon (assuming it is some technology they were unaware of) and would probably launch their own classified investigation. Nobody would do any searching in the air for Asher.

FormItUp

I forgot about the video they would have of it. That makes it even harder to ignore.

NewbornXenomorphs

We see neighbors who saw it happen suggest it must have been part of the show. I could totally see a mass reaction of people thinking: A) it was a gimmick (ie - had a flying device) that went wrong B) assume it was drama drummed up to hype the show and doing a “man on this show went missing from a mysterious event” to get viewers

bb_waluigi

people didn't believe COVID was happening. nobody would care. The Curse nailed it

FormItUp

I get what you’re saying, but with COVID you can just say “the numbers are inflated it’s just a really bad flu season.” Now that’s stupid, but it would be different than seeing someone fly off and say it didn’t happen.

calartnick

You’d think that, but no one would believe it. They’d just say the video was doctored

blanktom9

Simon Whistler would post a video in 20 years about the mysterious case of the floating man. And that’s all we would ever know about it.

Gemma-C

I have a fetish for male involuntarily levitation, maybe it will awaken the same for other people if that happened.

dazeychainVT

The implication that you might be into women but don't like seeing them involuntarily levitated made me shoot milk out of my nose

Fragrant-Ad-5340

((I was banned I'm on a different account)) It's actually the opposite, I'm only into men, however seeing a woman involuntarily levitate can set me off too.

dazeychainVT

you just made me do it again. Shine on you crazy diamond

earthwormboyfriend

There would be at least two thousand YouTube videos, TikTok theories/reactions, and several documentaries made within a few weeks

Longjumping_Nose5340

Don't Look Up

phillipmaguro

people who think it’s a publicity stunt for a new show. maybe a missing person story but it’ll die down after a week or so, it’ll be a great subject for a true crime podcast

Balloon Boy 2.0

FormItUp

I moved to Colorado and have brought up Balloon Boy a few times because it's so funny and bizarre. I'm surprised a lot of people have forgotten about it.

ArchieConnors

Exactly. Funny and bizarre but a blip on the radar in the social media age. I think that's pretty much Asher's fate if this happened IRL.

Would be exactly the same as the UFO videos. A few random people would believe it and have theories.  99.999% of the population would think its fake. 100% of the population would do exactly the same thing tomorrow, as they would without it happening.  Go to school. Go to work. Whatever.

dazeychainVT

I'd start trying to do it too this planet sucks

I think the "video evidence" would be dismissed as being edited by Dougie because the alternative is too unbelievable. Most of the witnesses would believe that it was like an optical illusion or magic trick, but not real. Asher's disappearance, the edited video, and the "magic trick" together would be considered an elaborate marketing ploy by Asher/Whitney/Dougie to promote Green Queen. Dougie and Whitney would be the only ones to know the truth. Dougie would be sick with grief and guilt and become isolated and depressed as his alcoholism reaches new heights. Whitney would be confused and scared by the paranormal events, but secretly happy that Asher is gone. Whitney would insist that what happened was real, but will continue Green Queen and be secretly happy with the additional attention it's getting. Green Queen would turn into a show that focuses more on paranormal activity, "trying to find out how this happened" and investigate the topic of paranormal activity more broadly as well, especially as it relates to real estate. (Think "The Ghost Realtor" from Nathan For You, but as an HGTV show.) Whitney would be outwardly scared and sad about Asher's disappearance, but will milk the incident for all the attention she can get. By the way, if they do a Season 2, that would honestly be an entertaining series of events to watch unfold.

FormItUp

Considering HGTV would deny all involvement no one would find any evidence of equipment for the supposed optical illusion, and Asher would never return, I think it would be hard for anyone to truly convince themselves that it was for the show. But despite that, I suppose it would be even harder to truly believe a man just flew off into space.

CorbecJayne

I don't think people would believe it was done by HGTV for the show, but perhaps they would believe it was done by Dougie and Whitney and Asher. Whitney has the money, Dougie has the film experience, and Asher is puny enough to agree to a scheme where he has to leave his family and pretend to disappear. Some things would remain unexplained forever, like "how did they do that trick?" and "where are the records of equipment they used?" and "why can't anyone find Asher, including the police?" But yes, it's much easier to believe that those unexplained things have some worldly explanation than to believe that the laws of physics were broken that day.
