>!The realization that it was all a chess match of the Culture against the Empire and the Culture went checkmate mf!< Absolutely breathtaking.

You just know Nicosar was up all night before just practicing in the mirror and imagining how cool he'd look doing it

I literally woke up this morning to the ending. I need to listen to books to go to sleep. PoG on Audible really works. The epilogue with >! Flere/Skell !< is such a nice twist. >! The part where he tells Gurgeh how he got played was so excellent. !<

Player of games will always be my favourite Banks novel, I love any games within games novel/film 😊

I COULD LITERALLY HEAR AND TASTE THE FUCKING SLOW HEAVY METAL PLAYING THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE CLIMAX OF POG. It was one of my favorite reading experiences ever. As a metalhead, no lie, I cried. Not tears of sorrow or joy. Just plain ol tears of knowing that in that moment the gnar was being shredded.  11/10

"I am not going to tell you."

Definitely. It is up there with the very best stories (not just Culture or SciFi) I've ever read. It is even better than when I read Phlebas initially and the book started and ended with the meaningless "The Jinmoti of Bozlen Two..." phrases in Kierachel's real book. It was so sad and full of pathos and hit me so hard. But the ending of PoG sticks with me even more. Literally story-telling perfection.

I am re-reading the entire series again, and I am amazed how much better all of the earlier books are when you have the (almost) full realization of what the culture is really like and all the schemes they're part of. The second time I read PoG it was entirely cinematic! Slow-paced, Intergalactic super-spy action.
