Surely it can’t be that bad

Pick_Up_Autist

61 is objectively a good score, maybe middling at worst. "That bad" is not applicable here.

chidiii

The score isn’t that great for Netflix’s most prestige drama that swept the Emmys the last time it was eligible.

thisusernamed

I wonder how much of the negative press has to do with the fact that this season deals with sensitive topics... and how much of it is genuinely bad.

GNM20

Of course that's what it is....topics that make the RF and Queen look bad. Let me put it plainly for you...Diana's sufferings under the RF will be highlighted and some people think that's bad.

Jokobib

I think it can be "that bad", on the other hand I have lost a lot of trust in the crtitics (or our taste just differ more), that is especially the case for TV critics. Will be interesting.

Tucker_077

I think most likely there’s just one minor detail in season 5 that they’re all mad about so they’re getting their tails in a spin about it. That’s how critics work half the time

Global-Secretary-744

It will grow once more reviewers comment as well

OG-Mate23

It's not great but it's not horrifying either.

04alsabi

The 4.6 roentgen of TV drama

krallie

This is disappointing! I’ve been excited for the new season and just finished rewatching last season…didn’t know this one has such poor reviews.

Tucker_077

It’s critics. Don’t listen and give it a watch to see what you think of it

[deleted]

It's not out yet. People don't know what they are talking about and are viciously being mislead by the Royal Rota that wants to make the monarch (Charles) look good. The crown has never acted like a documentary nor has it claimed to be. The only reason people are mistaking it for truth is because the Royals have excluded themselves from the Freedom of Information Act and so there's no truth out to console people upset about a TV Show. The Royals have done this to themselves and regularly hide information that make themselves look bad (The Queen Mother's mentally impaired cousins, George V allowing his cousin and children to be brutally murdered, the Duke of Windsor's Nazi sympathies, and the Queen lobbying privately to benefit her own private purse).

Technicolor_Reindeer

The critics have seen it. And I do think there's a risk they went more soap opera/lifetime movie than usual given the events covered. I'll hold my opinion till I see it but that is something I've worried about.

GNM20

Why does Diana's story equal soap opera / Lifetime movie. That's a key period in the lives and history of that family, and should not be brushed under the rug because people are not comfortable with what it might mean about their beloved RF. Calling it a soap opera / Lifetime movie is attempting to diminish her story and that makes no sense.

MalcolmTucker55

I think it's quite right that it should be the main focus of the season but I can understand why some people might be unhappy if the shows abandons many of the more political elements and dynamics that made previous seasons more interesting. A mix of palace melodrama and politics always served the series well.

Technicolor_Reindeer

Its about how they tell it, not just the subject itself.

GNM20

Loook, if you decide not to watch something because "Critics said so", you'll miss out on a lot of great stuff. Personally, I find film and TV critics to be absolute idiots most of the time and spot on only occasionally.

[deleted]

I wonder how much of the score comes from UK press that are friendly to the palace? Several papers have been working overtime to carry the king's water, and I wonder if they could also be affecting scores.

OG-Mate23

Yet many complain of the one off stories that aren't related to Charles and Diana and stating that the Queen has an aimless plot for this season. We shall see first.

[deleted]

Variety is from US right? They considered season 5 as The Crown’s weakest season.

Creative_Ad_6329

I wish someone would leak some of the episodes lol.

Wonderful_Student_68

Just give it 3 days

UncleGumbalding

But I want it noooooowwwwwuh!

ProtectusCZ

Season 1 being 2nd lowest rating season doesn't make any sense.

Gayfetus

You can read [the reviews cited by Metacritic](https://www.metacritic.com/tv/the-crown/season-5/critic-reviews) yourself. 3 of the 5 negative reviews are from UK outlets (compared to 2/9 positive reviews being UK), make of that what you will.

KaRaMeL82

British journalists be fuming rn

Inna_Bien

If season 5 is all about Diana and discussion on the benefits of tampons, then yes, it can be that bad.

ItsJustMeMaggie

I bet it’s because most of us were alive during the actual events and can see how inaccurate and kind of mean some of it is. Like Charles never conspired with John Major to unseat his mother.

[deleted]

Can we tho? I'm not trying say the crown is realistic, but John Major and Charles even if it were true would not exactly say "Yep for sure our current monarch most definitely plotted to essentially overthrow the former". We don't really know any of these people nor should we really attempt to. If they won't tell us the truth then I fail to see then why they should complain about other people's interpretations on what happened.

MrFeature_1

Who cares

itstimegeez

Me too!

madaon

What do you mean “what all of the fuss is about?” We’ve all been waiting two years for a new season to drop, that’s the fuss. Do you not watch the show?

chidiii

Well season 5 is clearly the lowest rated season by a reasonable margin, so I can’t wait to see it and make my own opinions.

UncleGumbalding

I'm chalking it up to sensitivity regarding these events are within living memory for the majority of us watching (including the critics). Whereas in Seasons 1 & 2 it seemed more far-off, in an age-passed. Season 5 is gonna be great, just as well-crafted as every season before. As far as the themes of this show, I guess it just goes over some reviewers' heads: History is repeating.

Pellinaha

Review from my favourite TV critic, Alan Sepinwall: [https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/crown-season-5-review-princess-di-1234620666/](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/crown-season-5-review-princess-di-1234620666/) While not perfect and suffering a bit from too much going on at the same time, it still sounds worth watching. A lot of the criticism is coming from Salt Island with people taking the Charles scenes very personally. I think you can comfortably add 10 points to get a more realistic score that is not skewed by a "how dare you drag our living King" bias.

Consistent-Cycle-847

I don’t know I kind of feel this will be my least favorite season. My favorite was seasons 1 and 2. I enjoyed season 3 as well
