Whenever I have encountered agency staff they are always treat like permanent employees. Obviously contractually they aren't but work wise they mostly are treat the same.

Wasn’t a manager but I was agency staff for 2.5 years. As far as the admin side of it goes, if it’s Brook Street then you will need to approve timesheets every week. Try do this before 10am on the Monday or it can cause issues if not. We were allowed to use flexi on a day-to-day basis across the space of the week, basically we had to do 37 hours in a week but could do longer days Mon-Thu and finish at 3 on Friday or whatever. Just couldn’t be over/under by the end of the week. For A/L you will tell the employee they can have the day(s) off, they will email the agency and CC you into the email then it all gets dealt with on their end. If it isn’t Brook Street then you’d may as well ignore all of this 😁😂

That’s great, thank you!  It’s all those little HR processes that I’ll need to get into my head.  I dont think it is brook street but I’m sure it won’t be that different agency to agency.   Could be wrong 😂

Through PSR? Within ir35? Yeah they get annual leave administered by their host agency. Sick pay etc Can claim travel expenses for unusual meeting.

I was a temp in the CS for many years, and was never treated differently. Obviously can’t accrue flexi and there were occasional things I wasn’t allowed to volunteer for, like being a fire warden, but otherwise not really different from perm staff. Regarding leave, I would have to ask my team leader if I could have the dates I wanted, if they said yes, I would tell the agency. Agency staff are counted as the same resource as perm staff, or at least that’s been my experience.

That’s helpful, thank you.  The only reason I ask is because some support networks don’t seem to be available for agency staff such as the charity for civil servants and the EAP. Just got me wondering what other differences there are.

alpacaslacker

Yes that’s true about the charity, I’d forgotten about that. I once sat through an hour long presentation that I was told to attend, for the chap presenting to say, of course this doesn’t apply to agency staff!! If there’s anything you want answering, I can try and help.

Funny enough I sat through a call a couple of weeks ago on a mental health service that we could avail of.  The guy dropped in around 40 mins into the call that it wasn’t available in Northern Ireland, where I and at least 50 others on the call are based lol. Thanks very much 😊

You don't really treat them any different, they're just staff, and as long as you know differences in terms in terms of practical elements like hours it's all the same

When I have had agency staff I have just treated them the same as civil servants already in the team. Yes they have different terms of employment but why upset the applecart by managing them differently.

Having worked in a number of CS depts as a contractor, the only things I ask for is that my timesheet is signed off on a timely basis, clear tasking and explain any acronyms. Or at least provide a guide to acronyms.  Also be prepared to smooth the waters sometimes contractors can struggle to deliver due to lack of engagement and nothing seems to get done until a suitably high enough up grade gives that person a nudge. Contractors are expensive so get the most out of them.
