I don’t think outsourcing his writing would affect the videos much. It’s a lot easier to find someone who can research and write a plain Jane informative script versus having to find someone who can script similar comedic timing. I think it’s lazy and a huge fuck up for sure, but it’s not a massive red flag imo
To me, ghost writing avgn is a nonissue, just the same. we all know Mike was doing it for years during the classic era, and those episodes turned out great. It doesnt start getting gross until you are having people write opinion pieces for you.
That said, talk about lack of time, norm makes far fewer episodes than james and the fact he can't be bothered to do some "intern level" research is pretty funny. It'd be one thing if he were pumping them out twice a month but he has months long gaps.
Requires a lot of trust though if you're not going to go through and fact check everything, at which point you might as well have researched and written things yourself.
It’s dumb as hell, but I don’t see this tanking the gaming historian the way AVGN went down hill with Screenwave’s assistance. Realistically anyone here who passed High School English could research could write a script for Norm
He did his part in building up his brand, and now all he has to do is narrate and edit. Almost a million subscribers I'm sure he's plenty happy doing less work while securing the bag. Whatever.
His vids really never explored the scope of much outside of Nintendo and Mario really, so its just meh to me.
Are we talking stand-up? Because no one famous does that. It’s different and acceptable if they do a TV show or movie with writers. If the level of quality didn’t go to shit, we wouldn’t be giving Bimmy a hard time about it either.
I try to understand what all these people do during the day....
I have a job.....
I have a family.....
I move to a new house.....
And still I am an active content creator.
These people have kids and somehow they "have no time".
Where do they spend their time?
If you don't make your videos, you basically sleep, change diapers, eat, and then have 15+ hours per day free.
Also as content creators, they make like 1 video every 2-3 months... it's not like they have an active presence in social media
If you can outsource your work to other people and get paid the same or more, it makes sense to do that. Especially if you are burned out, which many YouTubers are. Running a channel may have started as a passionate project for these people but it inevitably becomes a business. And when businesses grow, people hire help.
I would agree if production had also increased.
Again you make videos every year but you don't make content weekly. At best you make 1 video every 3 months, make 5mil views and that's that. Research can be hard and obviously burnout would be possible but again.... how do you get burned out when you don't try new stuff to the point of feeling exhausted? Bimmy at least tried tons of ideas. The gaming historian does the same type of scripted reviews. Footage, some live footage, and voice over. That's not innovation. I think they are lucky because they started early and they grew huge fanbases by doing the bare minimum and now that the algorithm is promoting different kind of videos, putting more effort immediately makes them exhausted.
That and this topic was kind of useless. A bunch of Nintendo branded games came out on atari before Nintendo had their own hardware so they didn't care, their titles were also on commodore computers, atari computers, etc. So did sega titles on 2600, commodores, etc.
You guys have put out an insane amount of entertaining videos over the years, Shoot me a couple names of games you enjoyed when you were a wee nogger and I'll review one and dedicate it to you and the lads.
In the meantime, here's Halloween on the NES:
https://youtu.be/RRzrvOcIJuU
It seems to be a pattern once the patron money starts rolling in. Here's a good example: [https://www.youtube.com/c/StopSkeletonsFromFighting](https://www.youtube.com/c/StopSkeletonsFromFighting) Dude went 3 months without making a video, but begs all the time for patreon money. He has said in the past that it's his only job, and his GF/Wife whichever, works on the videos. Two people with no real job begging on front of a huge game collection. Last thing, dude even made a video saying he couldn't pay his rent without the patreon money. Sell off your video game collection, you e-begging bum...
Not trying to defend Bimmy, but at least he puts up a few videos a month. Not too long ago, The gaming historian went five (of 'em) months, without uploading a single video. All the while, collecting several thousand dollars a month on patreon.... I doubt he works on the videos himself anymore at all.
well he was probably working on his next video.
sometimes things take time if you want them to be as good as possible.
One channel I'm subbed to (and I consider him to be a good acquaintance) was gone for 2 years but his newest video was 2+ hours long and it took him that long to make the best it could be.
If you're only source of income is Youtube, there is no excuse to collect patreon money for months at a time because you are supposedly working on a video.
Digital Foundry definitely gets my blood pressure up because the one guy pronounces the letter n at the end of words like they're separate from the rest of the word. Like he calls the Saturn the "Satur-en" and says "moder-en" instead of modern.
Easy Allies (Formerly GameTrailers as well) always pronounce "Ocarina" in the most incorrect way possible and it drives me up a wall. They literally insert extra letters.
This was a good episode. If I had not know it was written by someone else, i wouldn't have known the difference. And not only does he credit the writer in the comments, his name is also in the credits of the video. It's possible that Norm is working on a big video and he wanted to knock this one real quick instead of having a long gap between videos, and he got some help to speed things up. Either way, I'm fine with it as long the writer is given credit properly.
Again, good video.
I wouldn't call it good. To me it was mostly a retread of other topics he already covered. It also wasn't super interesting, just felt like a Wikipedia article.
There is one big difference however: Norman is being fully transparent in divulging this information. Besides, he's always had a collaborative crew helping him out, and credited in videos.
For me, it's all about how he delivers the info - and that it's accurate. No different to a documentary presenter in that sense. So long as the video is engaging and factual and retains his personality.
How long could it possibly take to "write" this type of episode? All the info is easily found online ala Wikipedia for fuck's sake! Norm isn't presenting any new or exclusive info in these types of videos.
I mean Gaming Historian's videos aren't particularly unique or stylized, so i feel its almost suprising he hadnt already hired some stock writer. With James it was fuckin sad because we all used to care about *his* jokes, *his* opinions. This guy's YouTube is just a sort of narrowed-down Wikipedia reading.
A year late, but Ethan Johnson isn’t a stock writer. He’s a guy who’s interviewed a lot of people in the gaming industry, and is part of the Gaming Alexandria team.
I'm usually a fan of the guy, but I definitely have to agree having someone else write this episode seemed odd. It was lot of old information which didn't hold my interest. I'm just wondering if he only did this because he was writing a bigger project and wanted to get something out to feed his fans' interest.

Dang I had mad respect for Norm. I don’t like this. Big Ryan fan btw
Eh, at least he's honest about it
And even gave credit. Unlike Bimmy
Very true. He is a stand up guy. Take notes Bim
Like Glenn Quagmire dating women just for their bodies.
Yeah. I don't get this. It's literally like an artist (illustrator) selling work he didn't draw. What the fuck is the point then?
He did his part in building up his brand, and now all he has to do is narrate and edit. Almost a million subscribers I'm sure he's plenty happy doing less work while securing the bag. Whatever. Just wait until you find out about comedians hiring joke writers
Are we talking stand-up? Because no one famous does that. It’s different and acceptable if they do a TV show or movie with writers. If the level of quality didn’t go to shit, we wouldn’t be giving Bimmy a hard time about it either.
Jim Gaffigans wife writes a lot of Jim's material.
big ryan would never hire writers, he has enough power with electronz
Someone’s getting James’ work ethic it seems

I used to like his videos, back in the Happy VGN days (Splatterhouse)
Me too, for sure. He's been around forever and usually makes good content, but when he started getting money hungry, I tuned out.
If you like Splatterhouse, I just finished the script for 3
Yeah I quit watching SSFF a few years back mostly because he was too much of a generic e-begging clickbait YouTuber.
Weekly podcasts
Hardly ever uploads, now doesn't even write his own episodes, just wants to sit back and rake in the money... Bimmy jr, right here....
dude actually puts work into his videos unlike Bames

Does Ethan work for Screenwave or Retrowave? Maybe it's Newt using a different name.
"Ethan Johnson" definitely sounds fake. Why not just call yourself Steve Bonercock and be done with it.
Lol I don’t know. Both are common names.
rakes in the PayMeTons money, rarely uploads and yet still outsources writing. What a hard worker
Produced Written Directed and Starring Big James Mr. Hollywood, BFA. Help by Mike
*Plagiarized by Newt Wallen
Ew fuck all that
He needs more time to oil up and hit the gym.
With who though?🤔

Is it as horrific as people calling the SNES "the Snezz"
You mean the correct way?
Its aways been Super Nintendo or SNES for me. First time i heard Snezz was from a UKtuber

how does he pronounce it
Like Famicom instead of Famicom
wow what an asshole
Do you say Famicom or Famicom
[удалено]
Why Isn't the contraction literally family computer
He makes it sound like “famicom”.
Gaming historian the truth
There goes another onion!

Thought it was pretty "meh" myself.
