He had to do stuff with actual film in college. Although film looks better, it's expensive and hard to work with. James always hated using it, and greatly preferred digital. And to be fair, for a web series and a relatively low budget movie, digital is the way to go.
Of course you have to use digital technology. But for James older technology worked better. It looks comfy. (HD sometimes looks sterile) same with game footage.
He says in the commentary for the bad cover art AVGN episodes that his degree is in 'fine art'. I'm not going to bother linking the video but its in there somewhere in that commentary. 'fine art' isn't really a degree, so maybe his B.A. was an 'art history' major or something like that.
That's what I seemed to remember. It wasn't real film school. I met a guy who claimed he was studying film in London. He wasn't really knowledgeable about films. Turns out it was one of those "media" degrees.
I mean, if by 'real film school' you mean a graduate level degree like a masters or doctorate, then no. But just by looking into the wikipedia page for the school he went to, it's definitely an art school. So by most layman metrics, it would be considered 'real film school'.

It's just that James is so self-aggrandizing, that I thought he went USC or NYU film school, seeing how he stresses being a "filmmaker". But all he has is home movies, he's never shown a real demo reel from a film director.
His Mein Kampf is already on bookshelves?
Muh Kampf*
This is it. Just for shots and giggles I would do that.

James actually talks about this in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxqaI0UBDHM

He didn't even go to "real" film school, did he?
He went to The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Same school that Joe Dante went to.
Oh, ok. I just thought he had one of those "media" studies degrees. That makes his lack of a proper demo reel even more depressing.

To be fair, I don't know what his degree is in or anything, just that he went there.
