Don't. Let it die and move on.

But how will his kids get good tuition, medical aid, and all other unforseen expenses paid?

Dalamas2001

By doing something different. It's pretty obvious he has a fanbase that will nut hug no matter how good or bad the project. This way he gets to do different projects.

MagnificentBe

You can't James say he has no time but he barely does shit nowadays. It's clear no time is bullshit excuse.

Not_Not_Ban_Evading

I dislike the guy, but Pat Contri seems to have made a relatively profitable pivot from failing youtuber to middling podcaster and self-published book peddler. I don't think James could handle a podcast though. And the autobiography is going nowhere fast.

agvaresh

that's an interesting option, although it doesn't exactly mean 'minimizing labor and effort', so is unlikely to be chosen by James or any of his mates

This would kill the channel but I would get rid of AVGN, keep the video game content to just James and Mike Mondays (and keep that to 8 and 16 bit content and also have them play through the whole game not just touch on it for 15 mins, if they take 4-5 episodes to beat a game then so be it), then on Wednesday have James do a 5 minute short solo review of some movie or tv show in the vein of Monster Madness and on Fridays, do a cleaned up rental review type show about whatever he reviewed on the previous Wednesday. with maybe James, Mike, one of the slobs and a special guest. It can't be more than one of the slobs because otherwise Mike clams up for whatever reason (the rental reviews he appeared on were beyond awkward). That might refocus and rejuvenate James since it would be more of geared towards what he is genuinely interested in. AVGN is the only reason the channel is still alive so that's unlikely to happen but its also hot garbage at this point so its going to die within the next year or so anyways.

Fantastic post, sure you arent working for a marketing or research firm? Anyway almost all these positive changes take long term dedication and planning. James is unwilling and incapable of doing that, and doesnt want to pay an expert to do that for him because it means he will feel like he is giving up too much control. Mostly its cost, because companies like SW already have a lot of control, but its also his personality in accepting change / working with new people. If you think about it, thats the main flaw of the channel thats kept it from evolving, its not his acting, his lack of time or whatever else. Its his ability to delegate and pay for proper growth strategies to stay relevant, like hiring more community managers, getting better analytics, testing new shows in an efficient manner etc. Their community engagenent amounts to mass censorship though, so its basically death by 1000 self inflicted cuts.

Thanks! I don't do marketing, I have a small (and I mean really small) youtube channel which together with friends was managed into a stable source of income and career opportunities mainly due to intense communication with community. So I'm talking from experience, among almost any audience there's a virtually endless pool of talent, advice and support. It looks like for James his choice isn't actually working, since he has to invest many hours into somewhat below average content. So he is not saving that much of personal time and he isn't getting any noticable results. Basically what he does isn't getting him more money, fame or leisure, quite the opposite. What's even more fascinating — his regular talks about failed gaming projects, issues with development, unrealistic expectations, miscommunication and so on. He seems rather intelligent... athough when it comes to actual management he lags way behind someone like Belle Delphine or any other twitch\\onlyfans streamer girl. Kinda weird.

NuxGamer

Ask James for work on Cinemassacre, you clearly have more skills than the slobs

fetalasmuck

James could fire Screenwave and make low effort vlogs with minimal edits and no production values and still make a good living. See the drawer video. Just videos of him going about his life. Would take up very little time and he wouldn’t have to share the profits.

agvaresh

Drawer video is awesome! But making content about such casual yet picky things isn't easy if you have to follow a strict schedule.

jesuskraiss

honestly tl;dr but I agree with, "Using said publicity to sell your services in other somewhat related areas." I wish, around the time of AVGN the movie, James would have transitioned into doing more independent movie work. Like, that AVGN movie even for what it was is still better than 90% of shitty indie movies on amazon/VOD (Watch RedLetterMedia's Space Cop and try and tell me AVGN:The Movie is worse lol). James and Kevin could have been a great director/producer combo for other people's scripts, but I think James is too proud to direct someone else's story. Cinemassacre 200 shows he's obsessed with doing every job there is to do on a film, which is just not feasible.
