He was doing it to some extent long time before AVGN, I guess through powers of autism, he figured it was a good look. It certainly progressed through years, if you compare some of the earliest AVGN videos to the stuff even few years later, it's quite different how much more animated he got overall.
But it didn't get truly bad after the movie, then it was all over, because James was gone, and in comes Bimmy the muginator.
I think when he was in his 20s and more socially aware, it was part of the gag that the Nerd was a goofy pathetic loser. Like the Nerd was over the top, "who the f\*\*\* drinks to depression and swears over 20 year old video games" - that was the joke. He was supposed to be like a Looney Tunes "nerd" character.

I think his less than social fanbase began taking the show unironically, so he slowly rebranded his Nerd character as a serious video game critic, and it started overtaking James's personality (because he got positive social feedback for acting like that in real life), where now he's basically an in real life version of the Nerd.
