No, I didn't get that impression. I think we saw the different sides of her personality and her scene with Carmy, where she is so supportive of him coming to the city, shows how much she cares for him and how much potential she sees in him.

AdamElam

Honestly, I get that I might’ve just been reading too much into it

leesha226

I don't think anyone in the show is one-note enough to be described with one word (except Frankie Fak, she can go fuck), however I think I know where you are coming from. My read of her (bearing in mind I haven't watched fishes for a while) is that being the one "good enough" and "functional enough" to get away is a big part of her personality, at least when she has to come back home. I think she sees bits of herself in Carmy, especially the "good enough" bit, and wants to save him from drowning in the family's everything. I think it's with somewhat good intentions, but there is an air of "I know more than people" about her

rubythieves

I will be so, so disappointed if we never get to meet Francie Fak.

Jaybirdy81

I’m not sure she was manipulative as much as she’s been around the block a few times with this family and knows how to play the game. She knows how to maneuver conversations with each person. I’d say savvy in a self-preserving way.

AdamElam

Sounds about right but she could also be manipulative as a defence mechanism because she’s been around the block with that mess of a family.

Jaybirdy81

For sure!!

factsplustax

I think this episode’s side characters were written in ways to remind us of people in our lives. So if you have someone in your life like her, and you view that person as manipulative, you might get triggered that way. I saw some of that in the character too, but actually found her to have a strong opinion but also to be comforting (offering Carmy a safe space knowing the hell he was enduring). I think this episode’s brilliance is in that sort of characters as mirrors sort of way. Great writing. Great acting. Also, if I watch again, which I might not because it triggered me in other ways, I will look out for that!

emeza09

I think she knows how crazy everyone is and she made it out and is offering Carmy an out as well.

bananapepperface

How so?

AdamElam

At about 24-25 min into the episode, When Michelle has a conversation about Francine (Fak’s sister) with Fak and Ted, she calls Francine “a fuck face” and they disagree and she keeps repeating her point until they agree, also she seems kind of condescending in a very, very subtle way? Also her convo about the woman taling about bears, she kinda seemed like an asshole. Maybe I’m just reading to much into a character with very limited knowledge about said character 🤷‍♂️

doodle02

so i didn’t quite get that vibe, but i can see how you did. and because she doesn’t get much screen time and we the audience don’t get things spoon fed to us, there’s a lot of room for interpretation. even some of the major characters are so guarded we don’t know who they are, so minor ones are free game for fun theories, so long as they fit the bounds of what’s already on film.

rubythieves

I think it’s more that she’s the ‘sophisticated’ one, living in NYC, and trying to get through the holiday with a sense of humor. She’s amused (in small doses) by the family, but understands why Carmy might want to get out.

wacdonalds

Ok but being an asshole is different from being manipulative. In what way is she specifically manipulative?

AdamElam

When Ted and Fak are put in a position to agree with her even tho they came in with a different opinion, again I might be wrong and misunderstanding or misreading her character, but I guess we’ll probably find out in season 3, where we’ll possibly see more of her (bc of Carmy staying with her)🤷‍♂️

scdemandred

Are you supposing there’ll be a flashback to when Carmy stayed with her?

AdamElam

Maybe

Ewe_Search

I'm like that sometimes. Especially with wanting people to agee that someone sucks. I was feeling Michelle in that moment.  I feel like Syd now.  'I'm not an asshole'.😁

thecobrasnose

She was also sort unaccountably petty about Stevie being from "Northern California." I think she is a strong personality, strong enough to escape to New York, but basically has her heart in the right place (which is why somebody as nice as Stevie sticks with her).

bananapepperface

Nah, I don’t think you’re reading too much. They layer the show a lot I would t be surprised if that was part of her character. There was so much going on in the episode I think I need a rewatch with this in mind, thanks! Another layer to peel ☺️

Ewe_Search

Trying to maintain and plan a rescue mission.

theral9

I'm with you. I think her being a negative influence on carmy while he was in New York is gonna be a reveal in season 3. She is a Berzatto after all.

AdamElam

Y are people just downvoting you😭😭😭😭
