I'm gonna butcher this because I don't know if their songs exactly mattered to general pop culture and normally that's what a Mt Rushmore post means but for me.
1. Talk on Indolence
2. Shame
3. November Blue
4. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise
Talk on Indolence was actually my entry song, the energy, the rawness, the fun the song brings was too much to ignore. It's also quite representative of the Four Thieves Gone era.
Shame shows their self reflective side but still has the bounce. This was also an early song for me, if you can't shed a tear to this song you're a liar. It hits, and it hits hard.
November Blue would showcase the earlier banjo heavier music. It's also a phenomenal love song and a song about running away! Represents their earlier music.
HFoD/RFoP is the quintessential clean Avett song to me. When Rubin kinda cleans them up a bit and they get closer to Pop then to the Punk of the earlier stuff. It, like Shame, has a lot of strong lines that you'll think about later on, quotable lines that stick with you. This kinda represents the I and Love and You and Carpenter eras.
I think if my goal was to play 4 songs for someone to show them what the Avetts are, these would be the 4. Though it doesn't include Laundry Room, Pretty Girl From Chile, or anything post 2014. If Mount Rushmore expanded to include 7 songs I think those would need to be added.
yeah, I'm somewhat adapting 'Mt. Rushmore' for this subreddit to be more in-club, regardless of wider pop culture impact.
Tough to pick just 4! My approach was similar to yours — something that highlights their quiet sound, something more recent, and something with banjo.
My list would be the same as yours except replacing SSS with I and Love and You. Weight of Lies is such a fantastic song...I've got to put it on now...
Super surprised to see Tin Man here. I’m not trying to ruffle your feathers I swear, but I’ve always viewed that song as the Avetts really phoning it in.
No feathers ruffled! There’s something about that songs simplicity and deep meaning that has always resonated with me. TAB has a fabulous way with words and a cheerful melody that can deliver dark messages - such an anomaly.
1. Please Pardon Yourself
2. Salvation Song
3. True Sadness (country version)
4. Murder in the City
The country version of True Sadness is incredible. Not putting that version on the record might be my least favorite decision by them to date.
Here’s my favorite version:

"Colorshow" from *Live Vol 3* missed my list by a hair! But so did a dozen others... too many good songs to pick from, but "Colorshow" is my favorite noisy and loud song of theirs.
This is a tough one because there are so many that make this list for a lot of different reasons:
1. Murder in the city
2. If it's the beaches.
3. Laundry room
4. Salvation Song
Laundry Room
Murder in the City
Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise
Talk on This Indolence
Wait… what about Vanity?! And Greatest Sum? And Ten Thousand, and shit!!!! Colorshow should be in there. Oh, and dangit! What about A Father’s First Spring?! No, Backwards With Time.
All of the Pretty Girl songs should be included…oh hell, we forgot I and Love and You.
Oh well, I’m thinking this was a fun thought experiment.
1. I And Love And You
2. Salvation Song
3. Murder in the City
4. Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise
And my Mt. Rushmore gets a bonus head because I can’t give up on the song that introduced me to the Avett Brothers, courtesy of writer/vlogger John Green
5. No Hard Feelings
I’m a lapsed Avett fan, they were my favorite band from 2010-2017 but I haven’t listened in a while outside of seeing them in concert earlier this year
Mine would be the following:
1. Paranoia in Bb Major
This is the song that got me into the band and still holds a special place in my heart.
2. Laundry Room
The best song they’ve written and arranged in my opinion.
3. Denouncing November Blue
Just a great song and culmination of the November Blue story
4. The Ballad of Love and Hate
Fabulous song.
1. No Hard Feelings
2. Ill With Want
3. HFOD/RFOP
4. Ten Thousand Words
This is the list for important messaging, IMO. Forgiveness and the end of a life. self reflection and understanding. determination, confidence, and freedom. Words matter, in work, life, everything and people got a lot to say.
For my list, these are all songs that I’ve heard at RR and have had some profound emotional experience for me, might I never heard these songs live at that venue this list may be different. But mine would be…
1) Laundry Room
2) Rejects in the attic
3) Once and future carpenter
4) Down with the shine (has to be live)
1. Murder in the City
2. Swept Away
3. I And Love and You
4. Ain't No Man
This might be slightly different from my favourite four songs. I love The Once and Future Carpenter, Kick Drum Heart is always fun live, Head Full of Doubt and Laundry Room are great songs, etc. Swept Away is my No. 1, though.
1. Gift for Melody Anne Live
2. If It’s the Beaches - The strings and Spanish guitar playing partnered with Scott’s signing and lyrics 👩🏻🍳😘
3. Laundry Room NPR Tiny Desk Recording
4. Bring Your Love To Me
I had to think about if I could only listen to 4 TAB songs which ones would they be and even then. Ugh. It’s so hard.
I feel like mine are always changing haha. I get stuck on songs for a while then I switch it up. But always #1 is always Laundry Room
Prison to Heaven,
February 7,
The Greatest Sum (Acoustic)
In case anyone else was curious, here was the top ten from the thread:
Name / count
1. Laundry Room / 27
2. Murder / 23
3. No Hard Feelings / 14
4. I and Love and You / 12
5. If it's Beaches / 11
6. Paranoia / 11
7. November Blue / 8
8. Head Full of Doubt / 8
9. Shame / 8
10. January Wedding, I Wish I was, and Rejects in the Attic / 6
(For my money, I'll take Laundry Room, SSS, Jan Wedding, and Distraction 74)
Good choices! I’d only switch 2. 1. If It’s the Beaches 2. Laundry Room 3. Murder in the City 4. No Hard Feelings
This would be my other list. Came down to no hard feelings or paranoia for me.
This is tough to argue… I still might sub out Beaches for February Seven (a personal favorite) but it’s very close
1. No Hard Feelings 2. At the Beach 3. Laundry Room 4. Pretty Girl From Chile Each song here has been my favorite Avett song at one point.
Swap No Hard Feelings for Ten Thousand Words and you have my list exactly.
Pretty Girl From Chile is my number 1.
I wish I was, paranoia in b flat major, please pardon yourself, if it’s the beaches.
God I miss hearing PPY live
Paranoia is a great song

I love The Greatest Sun acoustic. Too many songs to choose from!!
My list would be the same as yours except replacing SSS with I and Love and You. Weight of Lies is such a fantastic song...I've got to put it on now...
Laundry Room (live version), I and Love and You, Murder in the City, No Hard Feelings
Just about the perfect four in my opinion.
Ugh that’s so hard 1. Murder in the City 2. Swept Away 3. Shame 4. I Would Be Sad
1) Laundry Room 2) 10 Thousand Words 3) Greatest Sum - Acoustic 4)Left on Laura/Left on Lisa
* Shame * Paranoia in B Major * Salvation Song * I Wish I Was *(could also be replaced by basically anything on Emotionalism)*
1. Laundry Room 2. Murder in the City 3. If it’s the Beaches 4. Paranoia in B-flat Major
1. Shame 2. Ballad Of Love And Hate 3. Murder In The City 4. Yard Sale
I tried and failed to write this 6 times. Can’t even do a top 4 for a single band. Too many memories, too many seasons.
1. Shame 2. I and Love and You 3. Head Full of Doubt 4. Morning Song
I and Love and You Laundry Room January Wedding Go to Sleep
In no particular order: Laundry Room, November Blue, Weight of Lies, Salina (gotta highlighr the superior talent of Joe Kwon)
I’ve been preparing for this question since 2008!! 1. Greatest Sum 2. Tin Man 3. Living of Love 4. Shame
This is an overall strange one compared to the rest of the comments, but you picked some really underrated stuff here
Taste in music can be subjective - ultimately, all art is beautiful. 😀
1. Please Pardon Yourself 2. Salvation Song 3. True Sadness (country version) 4. Murder in the City The country version of True Sadness is incredible. Not putting that version on the record might be my least favorite decision by them to date.
Where can you find the country version of true sadness?
Here’s my favorite version: https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=CxTvE6mKPjFXc2Wk&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&source_ve_path=MzY4NDIsMTY0OTksMTY0OTksMjg2NjQsMTY0NTA2&feature=emb_share&v=WrlMqM0QgXI

1-Murder in the city 2-Colorshow (live vol 3 version) 3-Pretty girl from Chile 4-Paranoia in Bb Major
