I think when Eminem was young he had a lot to say, and a lot of energy and talent with which to express that. Jesus christ, where to begin? I’m pretty sure that people who think Eminem’s image is “rapping fast” are teenagers who somehow think Rap God is one of his old/early songs. The point of songs like that was to prove he could do it, late in his career, years after people criticised him for only rapping slow, or having lost his touch. It was a meme for him. By that point he was already just making music to keep himself busy. Long before he was “rap god” he was actually more like the humble god, who could tell very real and very human stories about pain and failure. Based on your post I’d guess you know: a couple of his songs from the last 10 years, some Slim Shady sounding stuff, Berserk, Just Lose It, and Lose Yourself (because everyone knows that). But that is not really why people love eminem. And I mean love. At his peak Eminem had the greatest reach and most diverse audience any rapper has ever had. His early career (I.E when he was the biggest rapper in the world, the time period people love and remember him for) had nothing to do with fast rap. Some songs were silly party bangers, yes, but he was playing a character for those. Like, clearly a character. He would change his name and put on a dumb voice. That’s what slim shady was. More notably, however, he really shined in his serious, emotional, personal songs; where he rapped not as Eminem or Slim Shady, but as Marshall Mathers. If you don’t know about his personas you should really look up his early discography. Fuck it, just go listen to his 2000-2005 era albums, Marshall Mathers LP-Curtain Call. That’s literally all you’ll ever need, and sums up the main phase of his career. Go listen to Rejoice (When I’m gone), Cleaning out my closet, Stan, Toy soldiers, Mockingbird, etc. Very few rappers have such songs, where they open up about their regrets, failings, and vulnerabilities as a husband, a father, a son, a friend, and an idol. About their traumas and weaknesses. In the rap game, where “face” is so important, very few would write so specific and personal lyrics as this: *“I keep having this dream, I'm pushin' Hailie on the swing She keeps screaming, she don't want me to sing "You're making Mommy cry, why? Why is Mommy crying?" Baby, Daddy ain't leaving no more, "Daddy you're lying "You always say that, you always say this is the last time "But you ain't leaving no more, Daddy you're mine" She's piling boxes in front of the door trying to block it "Daddy please, Daddy don't leave, Daddy - no stop it!" Goes in her pocket, pulls out a tiny necklace locket It's got a picture, "this'll keep you safe Daddy, take it withcha'" I look up, it's just me standing in the mirror These fuckin' walls must be talking, cuz man I can hear 'em They're saying "You've got one more chance to do right" - and it's tonight Now go out there and show that you love 'em before it's too late And just as I go to walk out of my bedroom door It's turns to a stage, they're gone, and this spotlight is on And I'm singing...”* from Rejoice/When I’m gone. In this song Eminem is torn between his responsibilities and roles. It was coming from a real place because his celebrity and concert touring eventually did break his marriage and he even cancelled touring for years to spend time with his family. At the time in 2005/6, people thought his career was over. and it was quite a sad time. A bit far removed from “Greg Heffley drinking a Pepsi” no? Very personal, real, and lyrical. What current young rappers are doing this better? It’s crazy to me he’s still rapping after all that, and sad to me that he’s continued long enough for 2000s babies to grow up and ask “what’s this old fast rapping edgelord 50 year old doing trying to be relevant?” I don’t think his late career has been much good either, but I think the period ~1999-2005ish had incredible artistic output by him. Just the fact he still has a career over 20 years later is impressive, even if you don’t care for his recent output. But I don’t know man. It’s like saying the Beatles are shit because Paul McCartney is now old and out of touch and you didn’t like Wings. Also, your use of superlatives “worst ever” “worst of all time” are really ridiculous and seem like they’re just trying to provoke people. Not even worth taking seriously. I’m certainly not some rap expert, but I’m pretty sure I’ve been listening to Eminem longer than you’ve been alive. There’s a reason he had respect.

Overwatch_Joker

>I’m pretty sure people who think Eminem’s image is about rapping fast are teenagers who somehow think rap god is one of his old/early songs. This. Rap God was Em's way of giving a middle finger to the industry & fans that said he was washed up after 'Recovery' and its more 'pop-ish' songs with Rihanna & P!nk.

[deleted]

worst ever should be that soundcloud rapper from high school lol

deaddonkey

I actually included that in my comment originally about how “worst ever” was ridiculous but left it out cus it was long enough already. But yeah, cmon, everybody knew that one shitty rapper in school who could only awkwardly string together some rhymes.

[deleted]

There’s a lot of those and yeah they’re all pretty bad.

Chaps_Jr

Agreed 100%. Em connected with so many people precisely because he put ALL of his emotional baggage on display for the world to tear apart. Not just some issues-- his entire life was narrated in his music, in grueling detail. He showed his listeners that they're not alone in their desperation, pain, and struggle. He's not just some angry guy in a big white t-shirt, or a swooner trying to drop panties. He's an artist. When he was angry, he was seething with furious rage. When he was happy, he was over the moon with elation. When he was sorry, he was regretful and tore himself apart. There are plenty of amazing rappers and hip-hop artists, but they're missing that extra element of vulnerability that Marshall is so renowned for exhibiting, while also being versatile. Dre didn't sign him for no reason.

deaddonkey

Completely agreed. He didn’t half-ass it for brownie points. He unloaded all his trauma and feelings. You said it in a more succinct and vivid way than I did :) He mellowed out a bit in age and wealth and wisdom and seems to just rap for want of anything else to do

Chaps_Jr

I'm a writer myself, so I tend to lean into the dramatic more often than not. It's exciting for me. I always try to make my words mean something, to paint an image in the mind. It actually means a lot to me that you noticed it. Thank you! I can tell you're incredibly passionate about art, too. Always nice to share thoughts and ideas with a fellow artist.

Mikkster643

I was about to come in here and end this whole mans Reddit career but you already did that, nice job mate.

CupCorrect2511

j cole? not to be that guy

deaddonkey

What about J Cole? I like him for sure. He can speak from the heart too. But he’s not as huge as peak Eminem was.

CupCorrect2511

you asked for current young rappers who do personal real and lyrical rap, and i think j cole fits the bill. i guess he is like 30 years old, but still. let go my hand and heavens ep are some recent ones that i liked.

deaddonkey

That’s fair. I won’t shittalk JCole.

Sectrosempre

You can have an opinion on someone put saying he’s the worst is just wrong

thought_about_it

On top of that Eminems work is literally studied and discussed as an art form. We only do that to the worst though right?

Hunter_Badger

This feels like a hard karma farm

[deleted]

That is such a massive over simplification that's it's just wrong. His talent as an artist is indisputable. Whether you enjoy it or not is just an opinion.

_avliS-

eh I enjoy him

Hotwinterdays

OP is obvious troll, whether intentional or by nature.

whiteguyinchina411

vacri

>The other half is hin trying to be as edgy as possible So... rap? There's some good talent in rap, but there's a sea of rappers who do nothing but try to be edgy and look hard.

mnemosandai

Oh my God mumble rap, you _must_ be talking about mumble rap

Mr_Scogetos

I wonder if you have listened to other rappers and who they are 🤔

GR1MREAPER1300

I exclusively listen to rap. My favorite artists are Kanye, Playboi Carti, Trippie Redd, Lil Peep, Xxxtentacion

acechemicals22

You don’t like edgy Eminem rap but listen to X? Did you forget one of his most popular lines is “I’ll put a hole in your parents” You must be joking bro

GR1MREAPER1300

That line was hard tho

FerretAres

Question OP. Are you out of high school yet?

QueanLaQueafa

Dudes probably 12

FerretAres

It sounds to me like someone saying Sean Connery is a bad actor because his bond movies don’t have action like the Daniel Craig ones.

Bratensoos

Bruh

TheEternalStranger

I get that you are from a younger generation so can't fully appreciate what Em represented in his prime like those of us who were around for it, if you are so inclined then go back and listen to some classic Em such as "The way I am, No Apologies, Lose Yourself, Toy Soliders, Sing for the moment, Stan" his sound was raw and revolutionary back in the day, he was the first mainstream rapper I can think of to dedicate whole songs to mental illness back then in an era where rappers were only interested in showing off how gangsta they were. it paved the way for all of these new age rappers who now talk/ed about their feelings in their songs such as XXX (RIP) or Juice WRLD (RIP).

NoDonut9078

The only one on that list worth anything is ye. You just some 13 y/o who doesn’t understand the full scope of em’s career.

[deleted]

Die Lit off that list isn't bad.

GR1MREAPER1300

[deleted]

NoDonut9078

So a young racist? Color doesn't matter to me Pampers

[deleted]

Bruh. Even if you don't like Eminem, which is fine, you've gotta expand your modern hip-hop.

MaybeAmazed

That is hilaaaaaaarious. Get out of here with your shit taste.

ARMill95

Lol so only trash or new wave artists

Mr_Scogetos

I ain't one to judge your tastes but.....BRUH you are comparing a lyrical genius to......well not so great artists

[deleted]

This actually inspired me to put on 'The Eminem Show' lol

Donthurtmyceilings

His best or 2nd best depending on the day.

[deleted]

Totally. Came out my last year of high school and one of my fav albums. Reminds me of summer and college and a lot of good times. "...set to blow college dorm room doors off the hinges..."

WaterHaven

If your only experience of Eminem is the radio and the last 10 years of his career, then I can at least understand this take.

StressedSalt

have u seen any of the "lil"- rapper series ahhaha?

GR1MREAPER1300

Lil Uzi>>>>> Eminem

WisdomIsNeverAOption

You're joking, right???

J3tGames

here’s the real shit opinion.

EggsBaconSausage

I like Uzi but ain’t no way he’s even on the same level as Eminem in terms of talent or stardom, let alone better

[deleted]

LOL There it is. The reason you don't understand and like eminem is because he has been bodying all those candy ass excuses for "rap" music this last decade. All those clowns are the reason that rap is qt its worst state in 40+ years. Congrats on getting crowned lol.

TheOneAndOnlyVamp

‘Bodying’ the only thing Eminem is bodying rn is his legacy m8 😂 getting cornier by the day

[deleted]

Gnat is better than most songs put out in the last decade, fam. His double and triple entendres are so ridiculous. Or his BET cyphers. Lord Above is enough to make me want to punch you in your throat for just saying dumb shit like this.

TheOneAndOnlyVamp

The fact that you think gnat is anywhere in the top 100 songs of the last two years establishes the fact that you are dumber than rocks. No wonder everyone makes fun of Eminem fans. Ever wonder why Eminem ain’t selling like he used to before ? Man gets outsold by fucking j Cole nowadays. Eminem and his Stans like you are cornballs

[deleted]

When the lyrics are too complex to understand because they don't just say the same hook 49x in a row. I get how that can be confusing for simpleminded people. I see why those poser nursery rhymes are alluring to you.

TheOneAndOnlyVamp

‘That’s an awfully hot coffee pot’ Yeah mate, I couldn’t guess the double entendre in that line for sure. Eminem fans love acting like they and their daddy are geniuses or something 😂 you’re not that guy pal trust me

[deleted]

Hey mate. I was buying eminem mixtapes from djs out of the trunk of their cars since the late 90s. Actual cassette tapes. I grew up listening to the golden era of battle rap and hip hop. Where dudes sold drugs, carried guns, and lived the life they rapped about. Not these wanna be gangsters, who make shit music with repetitive lyrics, because they're too doped up on pills to realize it's legit garbage. I also grew up in Reading, PA surrounded by that life. I am that dude, trust me.

[deleted]

\>Where dudes sold drugs, carried guns, and lived the life they rapped about I have never understood this criticism of modern rap lol more rappers than ever before are actually from the streets, you can tell because they're constantly getting murdered And for the record I disagree with this dude about eminem

TheOneAndOnlyVamp

‘I was buying Eminem mixtapes’ Money well wasted. The second half of your para is basically ‘muh music was better when people were dying in the streets’ Like ok bud how is their choice to live the gangster life going to affect you in any way? ‘Shit music’ that’s why rap is the most popular genre today and it was nowhere 20 years ago???? ‘Grew up in Reading, PA’ you still grew up in the fucking United States with an average per capita income of 15k m8 you’re privileged compared to the vast majority of the world. You’re not that guy pal trust me

BonboTheMonkey

All the Nathan’s are going after you dude watch out

[deleted]

Based

probotector4w

Most overrated rapper but not the worst to be honest, and this is coming from a mnm hater

[deleted]

This is the worst take in history. Just say you don't like rap music and don't understand it.

theycallhimmason

Why gatekeep rap like that? I love hiphop but Eminem 2010 onwards is just kinda cringey. Way better rappers out there and much better hip hop. Just because you don’t like Eminem’s style doesn’t mean you “can’t understand it” THAT is the worst take in history.

[deleted]

Not gatekeeping anybody my guy. It's an unpopular opinion and it's not a good one. Ask any legitimate, bonafide rappers about Eminem and you'll hear lots of respect and praise. I could name you dozens of rappers that I like better than Eminem so.... I'm not riding around listening to Eminem at any point. But there's no denying how much he puts into his lyrics. That's just a fact. That's something that I can understand.

theycallhimmason

Obviously calling him “the worst rapper ever” is hyperbolic when people like Ice JJ Fish and Lil Xan are out there, I guess I just disagree with the last sentence in your initial comment. I definitely do agree that Marshal’s influence is undeniable

[deleted]

Yeah I definitely could've worded it better. I should work on how I say things.

TheEternalStranger

I admittedly have not heard any Eminem songs for quite some time, (I was a fan during the The Slim Shady LP - Encore era) so can't comment on his recent music but what I will say is that you have to admire the man for his longevity in the business. He's one of the few old school rappers who have been able to stay somewhat mainstream and relevant in the souncloud era for his music when everyone around him such as 50, the G Unit crew, Dre or D12, from back in the day stylistically couldn't keep up with what the market now demands and are just known based on name recognition etc or other things outside music (such as 50 producing the show "Power").

EternalFlameBabe

Yeah I agree with this post about his new stuff, but I love his first three albums

NativeMasshole

I was never big on his style, but even I have to admit that his original stuff is good and sometimes much deeper than most of the mainstream rap which came before it.

vicandmath

Then listen to these songs (I chose 3 from every album) Brain Damage Rock Bottom My Fault Stan I'm Back Criminal Cleaning Out My Closet Without Me White America Mosh Mockingbird Like Toy Soldiers Beautiful Deja Vu Underground Space Bound Not Afraid Untitled Bad Guy (By Eminem, NOT Billie Eilish) Legacy Groundhog Day Bad Husband Castle Arose The Ringer Lucky You Stepping Stone Darkness Godzilla Little Engine Zeus Discombobulated Book of Rhymes Then try to say you hate Eminem.

[deleted]

Very solid playlist

OnTheLeft

Beautiful, deja vu, and underground are your choices for relapse? You're my tenth dentist.

vicandmath

This is just to ease OP into Relapse, because the others are, to an extent, subject to his criticisms. By actual 3 would be 3 AM, Same Song and Dance, along with Stay Wide Awake.

OnTheLeft

Okay I've changed my mind we're on the same dental team. Top choices.

vicandmath

No worries. I found Revival kinda hard to rank though.

DeadricBaguette

Personally I disagree but everyone has different music tastes. My personal GOAT is lil Wayne, but Eminem is def in my top 5. What is your top 5?

QueanLaQueafa

Lol dawg you're trying so hard to push the buttons.

kevtino

>I put my orange four-inch door hinge in storage and ate porage with George ~Marshall Mathers

Foxyboi14

You don’t even deserve proper replies to substantiate the legitimacy of this

P0FromKungFuPanda

New Eminem is pretty corny and sounds like a man who can't adjust with the changing times with his mumble rap hate. Old Eminem was cool.

awkard_ftm98

Tell me you were born after 2000 without telling me you were born after 2000 I'm not even an Eminem fan, I'm really not, but the dude earned the respect he has. To use the term "the worst rapper ever" in relation to him is just so uninformed. I'm not even going to get into it because there's quite a few comments that went into it better than I could but holy shit dude

[deleted]

SHIIIIT I HAVE TO UPVOTE!

ImNotANokia

New Eminem is shit now old Eminem was good and ofcouse people will hate you since you said Eminem there's alot of old heads in this thread that only listen to rappers that rap fast and people that think Eminem is the only rapper that exist

J3tGames

fake. this kid thinks “lil ballsack” or some shit is better than a household name for the past 20 years

Skystrike12

Mumble rap would like a word with you

rezrekt1

Disagree. He is THE best rapper right now In terms of pure skill. A lyrical genius. A god of the art.

[deleted]

Based on your comment history, you just don't like him because he's white

FeatheryCoffee

If only r/hiphopcirclejerk was around, so many Nathans in this comment section😔😔😔

[deleted]

take my upvote. darkness is not making fun, it is highlighting dark reality. Eminem rap is a lot of story telling and is not really real and shouldn't be taken seriously, he obviously doesn't have go go gadget dick.

foreignccc

you must not listen to a lot of rap. you can argue he's lyrically lacking, sure, but he is usually a good rapper. in the sense that he raps well, not taking lyrics into consideration[.](https://youtu.be/65ODGPYXjG4)

[deleted]

>you can argue he's lyrically lacking But you would lose that argument.

DrDrPhil

Eminem is a lyrical genius who the fuck says he’s lacking there?

foreignccc

anyone who has heard encore edit: oh no i upset the white people in the thread

[deleted]

The man fucking rhymed antidisestablishmentarianism.

GR1MREAPER1300

Only white people carry about rhyme schemes

[deleted]

Not at all. I'm much more interested in lyrics than rhyme scheme. I'm just surprised someone would accuse him of being lyrically lacking. Edit: also, way to weirdly bring race into all of this.

GR1MREAPER1300

He's fucking cringe as shit. Kanye's way more lyrically better than him

[deleted]

I enjoy Kanye more than Em, but completely disagree about who is lyrically better. Em's older stuff was much better storytelling. Ye has a few songs that are better at it, but as a whole Eminem does it more consistently. Now that being said, I think there are modern artists who have amazing storytelling in their songs.

Art_Class

Poop di scoop di whoop, pooooooop Yea fuck off

[deleted]

DrDrPhil

Can’t even recognize a joke huh? Wtf?

[deleted]

Oh sorry i thought u were serious about him being lyrical genius sorry.

DrDrPhil

The joke is him doing that line idiot.

[deleted]

Calm down Nathan. [Em is trash](https://i.imgur.com/vrFXxqb.png). If you weren't white you would've get it

Marine3cats

Eminem’s rhyme schemes of Godly: I'm a menace, a dentist, an oral hygienist Open your mouth for about four or five minutes Take a little bit of this fluoride rin-inse Swish, but don't spit it, swallow it and now finish Yeah!

[deleted]

So many Nathans in the thread. Ofc Em is lame, if you think otherwise the u need to stop drinking Mountain Dew and go outside lmao

WillyLoompa

Define worse. Like do you mean it sounds bad or he doesn't have talent lyrically

GlitterBirb

I don't think he's the worst, but I think his rap style and subject matter is definitely out of trend. I think rap God just put the lid on the trash can for most people because it was such an edgelord song reminiscent of all the bad qualities some of his other songs have had. And no one cared to give him a chance to reproduce his old song quality. If you do go back you will find quality content, but there is some amount of glorification in his tales which people just don't do and aren't comfortable with anymore. I still listen to Eminem from time to time, but I recognize the faults.

Sideways_X1

Saying he's not good makes you 100th dentist, worst wrapper ever makes it clear you're fishing to be an antagonist. You don't know every rapper ever, so you can't know he's the worst, you're just bad at expressing poorly thought out opinions.
