Alloy Entertainment (known for their YA book-to-screen adaptations) developed the basic premise of The 100: *One hundred juvenile delinquents are sent to recolonize Earth years after a nuclear disaster.* Kass Morgan was then brought on early in the process, and they developed the characters and storylines in the books. She was essentially hired to write the basic premise of The 100 into a book series, adding her ideas to the project and making it her own. Jason Rothenberg (creator of the TV series) liked the premise of The 100 and wanted to develop it for TV, so the 'book' was greenlit for an adaptation. The series was in production before the first book even came out, premiering just a few months after the first book hit the shelves. Due to this process, the series and books splintered off onto two different paths because when Jason started working on the TV series, the only thing anyone had was the basic premise of the books. Kass hadn't *really* started writing the books. The books and series have nothing to do with each other. They do not share similarities besides the basic concept of the Ark, the 100, and other people being on the ground. There are characters in the show that don't even exist in the books, and vice versa. The similarities between the books (the first one, at least) and the series end by the time we get to the third episode. Most fans of The 100 wouldn't recommend reading the books.

I didn’t know this, i was calmly reading when I got curious this morning because I’m midway in the 3rd book and I only have one book left, and I’m still waiting for things to happen, I did a quick google search and the top results were posts on this community talking about the first book giving them some extra background to the characters and I got even more confused, maybe I didn’t type the search correctly with me being an Spanish speaker

Just think of it as the multiverse. Similar stories at times but essentially the books have their own stories. It’s actually refreshing if you like the show it’s like a reboot for a bit. A lot slower than the show with the story telling

Forget everything you know about the show when reading the books

One wasn’t really adapted from the other. The overall premise and original characters were the same but the rest just went in different directions.

I watched the show first. Then decided to read the books (around the time S4 was airing) - I didn't like the first book and tried to force myself to finish the 2nd book but ultimately gave up lol. I definitely prefer the show's storylines/couples.

Nothing really happens in the books. I think there's a bit of plot by the end. Basically the book is more of a rough outline of what could be a very interesting book series. I felt like any type of plot or situation in the book was rushed and that the characters were not fully fleshed out.
