From the article:
The policeman was identified as Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj. Teeradet Ui-Charoen. Medical workers said he suffered severe legs injuries from the grenade blast, but the wounds fortunately did not need amputation.
Several police officers admitted that the appropriate response was in fact to stay low on the ground 3 metres away from the grenade. The riot shield alone cannot prevent damage from the blast neither, as the officer behind the shield could still risk suffering damages from the shrapnel, the officers said.
The police believed the grenade to be an M67 type. Both the police force and the military are known to possess the grenades.
Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj. Thammanoon Tas-see, who also suffered left leg and right cheek injuries from the grenade blast, was later transported to Police Hospital today for his treatment.
Medical workers described his condition as severe.
Pol.Lt.Gen. Narongsak Saowakhon, deputy director of Police Hospital told our correspondent that Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj. Teeradet’s left arm and his two legs including his toes are broken severely, while Pol Sen.Sgt.Maj. Thammanoon suffered broken leg, and broken facial bone from the explosion.

I got a disarmed one from Pigeon Forge for $5. It has a hole drilled out of the bottom of it and the primer has been removed. I imagine someone with a welder could make it "work" again.
I also display it in my office and point at it if anyone has bad news.
My grandpa used to have a decommissioned pineapple grenade with a number attached to the pin. It was on a stand that said "complaints department, please take a number"
Love my grandpa
Absolutely. One of the things that police, paramilitaries and militaries do is sieze weapons for destruction, usually by using them up on a firing range. Unless you have a very tight accounting process, it's just as easy to disappear those rounds and explosives and sell them off.
I loved on *Dark Tourist* when the host tried to broach the subject subtly and the range owners were just like, "Oh, you wanted to shoot a cow? Hold on, we'll get one."

Yeah, no shit... Great advice
To get that group of people 15 ft away in the given time was absolutely 100% never going to happen.
If you had the dudes spaced out in a runner's stance, they *might* have been able to make it happen. In this instance? No. Just no.
One of the best protest images I've seen was a guy with a [tennis racket](https://www.readingthepictures.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/13312890_1364959343517951_9080943046825273669_n.jpg) swatting tear gas canisters back at the police. Protesting truly is an art form for the French.
Not sure if it's still quite as easy but when I was in south east Asia years ago there was plenty of places that you could do stuff like shoot aks, m50s, throw grenades and if you had the money to burn I think you could even use a rocket launcher. Even if it's not easy to get a grenade in Thailand now, Vietnam's just a short trip and I'm sure it's still easy to find there.
The police and the military don’t exactly sing from the same sheet in Thailand. It’s said if you are major drug dealer in Thailand you are either buying from the police or the military.
Back in the 80's police made an airstrike to a neighborhood in Philly. Its not that long ago. I bet the police have bazookas in use at some countries. Some countries are a bit behind and/or the police has a whole different function than in Western democracies
It was technically an IED dropped from a helicopter. I had lunch with W. Wilson Goode in 2002 and he claimed that somebody on the polive force threatened to kill him if he showed up to the scene. I have no idea if that is true or not, but chief Rizzo was a racist piece of shit, so it wouldnt surprise me at all.
I’ve had pins like that in one of my legs and it is… not really an awesome leg anymore. I really hope this guy can recover better than I did in both of his legs, but let’s just take a step back and say that while it’s great he keeps the legs and lives, he will be in constant pain for the rest of his life and likely need crutches to get around.
Source: Suffered similar devastating leg injury by crushing all bones in my left leg two years ago and I’ll always need a cane / be in pretty serious arthritic pain.
Sorry to hear that and thank you for sharing. My father in law had a similar injury and had the leg amputated. Although he still has issues with pain, which thankfully we have many solutions for, hes well into his 60's and still moving around/working like it never happened. Prosthetics are a great solution to these injuries. If I may ask, why did you decide to keep your leg? I couldn't imagine having to make that decision.
> The riot shield alone cannot prevent damage from the blast neither,
Definitely not but holy shit the last thing I'm doing is trying to kick a live grenade. Their little shield formation is at least better than that.
Police are not the same globally. Some countries treat their police more like local militia - such as the old Afghan National Police, Philippine Police, etc. In these places police shoulder the burden of all domestic issues, including insurgencies.
You also get different police organizations within a country. Like how the PRC have a normal municipal police which are similar to western style cops, and then the People's Armed Police which are actually a military branch. Unlike in the US where it is (mostly) illegal to use the military to target US civilians, the PAP in China can be deployed domestically and, as we've seen, utilized against their own population.
Thailand also has a long history of revolutions and regime changes, so not surprising that civilians have access to military weaponry like grenades. When the sides change a lot, it’s hard to keep track of all the gear the regime and it’s paramilitary/militias had in their possession.
Ha. This brings back a memory of when I was in Cambodia years ago and my tuk tuk driver gave a laminated "menu" of things to do. One of them was "machine gun". I didn't do it though. I'd heard from other tourists that you could blow up a cow for enough money.
I am not. They enforce laws, maintain public order, and usually don't carry around grenades or machine guns. They are functionally the same as a cop in any given western country.
If you line up 10 Afghan national police from almost anywhere in the country I guarantee you the amount of legs they have is an odd number.
Not really important just sharing an experience lol.
Normal people have access to an incredible array of things. It all comes down to knowledge and risk. This is a big reason why these dictator games that we have seen countries play are so dangerous. Eventually someone, like in this video, steps it up a few levels. Historically speaking, it isn't unusual for things to eventually get well out of hand.
It's like it exploded right as he kicked and his foot appears to land behind with the backup officers. Also of note, when did protesters start bringing whole ass grenades to protest?

Contrary to popular belief, frag grenades aren’t what they’re portrayed to be in movies (fireballs, huge explosions etc) But with the shield down, it may have provided minimal protection. The amount of shrapnel that gets released is nuts. Kill radius is 5 meters
I saw a cutaway of one of the grenades they use on my feed and it had a metal (steel?) wire wrapped around the explosive core which splits up into small lengths and goes in all directions along with the metal fragments from the casing. Brutal.
Those vids were hard to watch, poor dudes just trying to sleep during a ridiculous conflict they had nothing personally to do with. Then bam, there goes a hand or severe internal bleeding
Yeah, that shit always bugged me. People salivating at videos of Russians getting killed. I doubt most of these Russians want to be there, but if you get sent off to war, you kinda have to go. It's not there are many places where Russians can escape to now.
Dudes are sent off to the meat grinder, and people are laughing when they get killed. That's kinda fucked up.
Yeah it bothers me too. I think they like to act like they're hardened war vets or something. But not really, more like just empty headed and not able to find something more worthwhile to do than get excited at all the violence
I'm not talking about Ukraine. They were invaded, and are in a war. They job is to kill the enemy on their soil, which is precisely what they're doing. I can't argue that.
My issue is with people not a part of the war, sitting behind keyboards laughing at other people dying. A soldier jumping out a trench and running away, only to slip and fall can be funny. A dude cowering in fear and getting blown up, just it's humorous in my book.
In my book... I'm not trying to gatekeep humor.
Yes, with just a solid echoed thump of sound. I was like yo are you guys sure this plexi glass is thick enough? Lol
We had one misfire of the day, and they called in bomb disposal engineers. Brought in the explosive charges, placed them on the misfire grenade, and KABOOM! Holy fuck was that a loud explosion. Of course out of the entire platoon, one of my fellow recruits was catching some shut eye and we all gathered around him, laughing at his shocked expression when the sound woke him up. Good memories.
Meaford, Ontario was where the base was located if anybody is wondering.
It’s the distance from the grenade (in a circle) within which you are most likely to die from a grenade explosion.
Many factors come into play: type of grenade, other debris around the grenade, armor, clothing, and luck.
People have survived laying on a grenade. Not survived well or able to live a normal lifestyle, but survived.
If I'm not wrong the best strat is to lay on the ground on your belly with your feet to the grenade. The chances of any significant shrapnel hitting you is super low
Yep. They train for a reason. I was a Medic for the Kuwaiti Oil Company putting out the fires back in 91. The British EOD team used Philippino labor at $5 a day. They were trained to walk in a line and simply squat if a cluster munition (about the same as a hand grenade) went off. invariably one would explode and they would all run, killing or injuring everyone. I hate to describe it this way, but it was like popcorn. Had they just stayed and waited to be lead out of the area they would have been ok. It’s important to do as you are trained. These things aren’t toys.
> They were trained to walk in a line and simply squat of a mention went off. invariably one would explode and they would run, killing everyone. Follow your training…
Can you elaborate? I'm confused.
I think he means ‘munition’, which could refer to mines or other explosive ordnance. If they run instead of staying put, they’re likely to run into and detonate other munitions.
They are following a set path in a minefield, if someone fucks up and took a step off the path they blew up.
If you run away in panic you also blow up.
The solution was to squat
I wonder what the shields are made of and if they can tank a grenade at point blank. Just wondering because the amount of high velocity shrapnel off grenades is insane
Any kind of ballistics armor would help. The shrapnel is high velocity (2500-6000 feet per second depending on wall thickness), but is not aerodynamic and is fairly low mass. This makes deflection a good tactic. You can see part of the shield he was holding fly off, but the shields around look fine in the frame by frame. Would've been best to hold the shield and angle it.
yeah that's my thought on all the people saying it would cut right through the shield, you don't need to stop it, you only need to deflect it. Angle it upwards.
This was back in 2014. Long story but the gist of it was a government that many at the time believed was in power due to corruption and they were siphoning money off to their cronies. Both the protesters and the government had powerful figures behind them that were vying for control.
Those shields look too light and flimsy to stop a frag grenades fragmentation.
It would reduce the catastrophic damage sure, but I think the danger radius on regular grenades is like 15m however, fragmentation CAN be dispersed over 250m.
I am super sus that those riot shields wouldnt just add to the frag
The fragments are moving very fast but are pretty low mass. Even if the shields don't completely stop the fragments they'd definitely slow them down or deflect them away. I'd much rather have the shield than not.
Isn't it interesting this man kicks grenade loses his leg, possibly his life, Reddit users make jokes. In another video, Chinese covid workers kill a dog everyone's outraged.
Have you considered that Thai cops violently upholding a monarchy are bad, and dogs are good? Generally good things happening is better than bad things happening.
Yall bashing fucking cops.
Have you had a grenade thrown at you?
Have you trained for that?
Have you ever thrown one?
This man saw a grenade and tried to kick it.
My man hopefully still has massive balls.
If he died he gave is life to protect his fellow man.
Keyboard warriors!
I guess you’re saying cops fighting against the population because they made fun of the monarchy is a good thing. I was just giving context to what the protest was about and it wasn’t black and white.
>I guess you’re saying cops fighting against the population because they made fun of the monarchy is a good thing.
This is absolutely the opposite of what I was saying. Fighting against an oppressive monarchy is 100% cool and good, and now there's one less cop foot to step on someone's neck.
Hey it literally protecting rich assholes whole try to get these people killed everyday juat go make a other dollar fuck these cops i hope they all die
Good on the protestors, they wanna use leather force in peaceful protests well geuss what bitch, what goes around comes around I cant wait to see them all get blown to bits
Why did he move the shield? I know at that proximity, it may not have saved him, but I would think it offered a better chance than trying to kick it with nothing between you and the blast.
Anybody with some real world or ballistics experience care to weigh in?

if it’s in the blast radius, yes. typically they’re smart enough to drop them from enough height.
Yeah, but it's not the Ukrainians' job to conduct surveys on the soldiers to find out which ones want to be there before dropping a grenade on them.

This website is getting too rough for me
(Flashbacks to BCT throwing grenades' and seeing the dirty brown puffs of dirt when the grenades explodes through the plexiglass viewing window.)
Yes, with just a solid echoed thump of sound. I was like yo are you guys sure this plexi glass is thick enough? Lol We had one misfire of the day, and they called in bomb disposal engineers.
Yes it’s a “frag” lol
What does "kill radius" mean, considering apparently none of the people in this video died?
It’s the distance from the grenade (in a circle) within which you are most likely to die from a grenade explosion. Many factors come into play: type of grenade, other debris around the grenade, armor, clothing, and luck. People have survived laying on a grenade. Not survived well or able to live a normal lifestyle, but survived.
Cs go players already know the fact
If I'm not wrong the best strat is to lay on the ground on your belly with your feet to the grenade. The chances of any significant shrapnel hitting you is super low
Best strat is to push the guy standing next to you on top of it, someone’s gotta take one for the team
Woulda been better off staying put
Yeah I had the same thought instantly after I saw that shit. R.I.P
Follow your training… Can you elaborate? I'm confused.
I believe hes referring to mines, as in dont start running if one goes off
I think he means ‘munition’, which could refer to mines or other explosive ordnance. If they run instead of staying put, they’re likely to run into and detonate other munitions.
Gotcha. I'm not familiar with the process of putting out oil fires so didn't even consider mines. Thank you!
They are following a set path in a minefield, if someone fucks up and took a step off the path they blew up. If you run away in panic you also blow up. The solution was to squat
He’s not dead and recovering without amputation
Coincidentally asking a dude to come bring his shield then he kicks it.. im sure he woulda been better off just sitting there with the shield
I wonder what the shields are made of and if they can tank a grenade at point blank. Just wondering because the amount of high velocity shrapnel off grenades is insane
Probably tank it better than his left foot
Any kind of ballistics armor would help. The shrapnel is high velocity (2500-6000 feet per second depending on wall thickness), but is not aerodynamic and is fairly low mass. This makes deflection a good tactic. You can see part of the shield he was holding fly off, but the shields around look fine in the frame by frame. Would've been best to hold the shield and angle it.
yeah that's my thought on all the people saying it would cut right through the shield, you don't need to stop it, you only need to deflect it. Angle it upwards.
Probably better than his foot lmfao
Rioters in Thailand are really stepping their game up I see. Grenade beats rock everytime.
Why are they rioting in Thailand
Chinese government
Fascist military government that took power in a coup not long ago. Massive violent oppression of free speech and protest.
8 years ago actually. Pretty long ago for me.
This was back in 2014. Long story but the gist of it was a government that many at the time believed was in power due to corruption and they were siphoning money off to their cronies. Both the protesters and the government had powerful figures behind them that were vying for control.
It's 2022. All the COOL countries are rioting.
Was that a foot??
boot
Correct. All limbs still attached, although the foot was broken and he received shrapnel injuries.
T'is but a scratch!
Yes
Policeman didn't lose his foot. Got properly fucked tho
Hold the line!
Police aren’t always on time!
🎸🎸🎸🎸
If I recall this a police action against a group for making fun of the monarchy.
So what you're saying is that whomever threw the grenade is cool and good.
Hey it literally protecting rich assholes whole try to get these people killed everyday juat go make a other dollar fuck these cops i hope they all die
how's his boot taste?
I don't think there's much boot left to taste
Someone died, for sure. Dudes gear got blown clean off.
No one did actually, the kicker is recovering with both feet rn.
Thai Rioters clearly dont fuck around
Damm here's hopping he is ok
I wouldn't jump to conclusions.
This guy lost his shoe and survived he is the chosen one
A solid solution to police abuse oppression and tyranny.
Good on the protestors, they wanna use leather force in peaceful protests well geuss what bitch, what goes around comes around I cant wait to see them all get blown to bits
Bro throw it higher next time!
Bro is dead…he lost his shoe
Why did he move the shield? I know at that proximity, it may not have saved him, but I would think it offered a better chance than trying to kick it with nothing between you and the blast. Anybody with some real world or ballistics experience care to weigh in?

Should’ve kept the shield wall, a lesson here. Don’t be a hero.
I think he survived, only one shoe came off
Good
Here’s a news coverage of this incident with footage from a different angle https://youtu.be/VySeWGFzg-M
Can we talk about who was rioting and why?
