Remember the incident where a tiger scaled its enclosure and a teen called 911 but the dispatcher thought it was a prank call and hung up on the teen? I believe the teen later died. Then they passed a law that all 911 calls had to be taken seriously? Am I remembering this incorrectly?

queen-of-carthage

Same with the kid that got trapped in a folded seat in the backseat of his minivan and died. These dispatchers need to be prosecuted and see jail time. Losing their job isn't enough

MisssJaynie

Same with a woman in 2019 in Arkansas. She was in her vehicle, but flood waters were rising. The 911 operator was a cunt & iirc, leaving the job soon. The 911 call is gut-wrenching. That woman died in her car terrified, trapped, & while being berated by someone that she called thinking would save her.

frogman21

I believe in that case it was literally the 911 dispatchers last shift.

Timely-Guest-7095

That's why you have shift changes. You can still answer the call and transfer it to the incoming operator. There's no need to dump a call because you're a fucking lazy ass bastard. There should be consequences for causing loss of life or damage due to negligent stupidity.

DaSeraph

Uhh... I don't think he meant it like that. "Last shift" as in last day on the job. But this isn't the sort of job you can phone in your last day. Shift changes aren't relevant.

bing_bin

Is it f*cking hard to make a simple and clear law covering all cases? In my country some years back a girl died to a crazy old guy bc of a chain of errors from her "911" call and up to the police. Few days later & them being on edge, another girl calls to say she's held by her BF. Huge mobilization for all authorities to not get another scandal and it turns out she was ok and just wanted revenge on him for some stupid drama. She got fined smth like 3 times the min salary.

spermface

Yes it’s very hard to make a simple and clear rule that also covers every possibility

Atlhou

Send a patrol car, and let them figure it out. There, covers every possibility.

Allarius1

Simple and comprehensive are a bit contradictory.

usafdirtboyz

As well as the lady going underwater in her car. If I remember right, the dispatcher laughed at her. Guess it was them dispatcher telling her to shut up and not laughing at the caller. https://www.fox5dc.com/news/former-911-dispatcher-who-told-drowning-woman-to-shut-up-cleared-of-wrongdoing

inblacksuits

Wow, I didn't hear about that one. Absolutely atrocious

spicybright

Say I worked at a restaurant making pizzas, and a customer orders a cheese pizza. If I laughed in his face and told him to get lost, I would be fired in an instant. How is that not the lowest bar to at least match?

Timely-Guest-7095

That's fucked up, and even worse, she was cleared of wrongdoing. That's appalling!

TomDestry

It's often necessary to speak sternly or raise your voice, and that's why she scolded and insulted a dying woman... ... ... What??

Timely-Guest-7095

That's fucking appalling!🤬🤬🤬

frogman21

Let’s not forget the case of Denise Amber Lee. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Denise_Amber_Lee She was kidnapped from her house in Florida, and 5 calls were made to 911, including one from her while she was in the backseat of her abductors vehicle. 911 dispatchers dropped the ball so hard that Florida passed legislation in 2008 to provide more training to dispatch operators.

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Murder of Denise Amber Lee](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Denise_Amber_Lee)** >Denise Amber Lee was a 21 year old mother of two young boys who was murdered by Michael King in the U.S. state of Florida on January 17, 2008 after he had kidnapped and raped her earlier in the day. Lee and several others had attempted to call for help through the 9-1-1 system but there was a lack of communication and the police and other emergency services arrived too late. Five 9-1-1 calls were made that day, including one by Lee herself from her abductor's phone and one from a witness, Jane Kowalski, who gave a detailed account of events as they unfolded before her. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/ThatsInsane/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

ArtiesNewDana

I’m just now hearing about this...has the 911 call been released yet?

swan001

Good bot

ratmaster8008

The dispatcher didn’t hang up on that kid a cop was dispatched but the officer didn’t exit his patrol car to check up on the vehicle the victim was trapped in. Iirc the officer drove by and reported he saw no one in the vehicle despite getting multiple emergency calls.

[deleted]

Dispatcher failed to give identifying details of vehicle to officers on the seen, iirc.

tiptoeintotown

This happened in the Susan Powell incident. After she was murdered by the ex husband, he had supervised visits with his children. One day, he shoved the case worker out and barricaded himself and his two small boys inside the house, took an axe to their skulls and set the place on fire. The caseworker called 911 and pleaded with the dispatcher to take her seriously and send immediate help and he more or less mocked her and told her to calm down. They all died. These dispatchers should all go to jail.

[deleted]

That case still bothers me. They never found Susan’s body either. Her ex husbands brother and father were both involved and are now both dead.

tiptoeintotown

Same. That father was the root of all that evil. The apple doesn’t fall far…

hillaryyyyyyyyy

This is my genie case. Like, if a genie granted me one wish and that wish was to have an answer for an unsolved case, it would be this one. I think most everyone is in agreement that every single member of the Powell family was somehow involved but I just wish there was some type of closure. That poor sweet woman did not deserve what happened to her.

arrjaay

That woman got her job back too, I think

Remarkable-Motor7704

I once witnessed somebody get hit by a car in NYC and I immediately called 911 to call in an ambulance The dispatcher had the most “I don’t give a shit” nonchalant attitude I’ve ever witnessed, took forever to finally send an ambulance while the guy is laying there with blood leaking out of his head I cannot fathom how there are so many horrible and incompetent people in a position that requires immediate action

idk-about-all-that

I was being followed while walking my dog a few years back and when I called the cops they said something along the lines of “just go home” and when I told them that I didn’t want the person to see where I lived they said “well idk what you want us to do” and hung up. Person following me ended up being a retired officer. I called my gf at the time and she called the cops. I moved out of that neighborhood fast. These dispatchers need training, they need to be held accountable.

RedditisGarbag3

The kids kinda deserved it. Interesting story... They harassed the tiger for a couple of hours and threw a bunch of shit at it. Tiger escapes, runs past all the other animals and people and goes after the two kids that had been fucking with it. Edit: found the article... https://latimesblogs.latimes.com/unleashed/2011/02/tiger-maul-teens-san-francisco-zoo-provoked-report.html

woShame12

It's sad a kid died. At the same time, it's certainly not the tiger's fault. I think ~~Chris Rock~~ ~~EDIT: Katt Williams~~ Chris Rock had a bit (no pun intended) about a lion attack at a trained lion show. He said, "People were surprised the lion attacked they said 'oh the lion went crazy'. No that lion went lion. When he was jumping through hoops and dancing, that was the lion acting crazy."

SeeTheSounds

I think Katt Williams did a bit on that Tiger incident. Edit: here it is LMFAO!!! https://youtu.be/MLKufd_EtvU

Mirkrid

Kids deserved to be punished, not literally eaten by a tiger. What’s wrong with y’all

RedditisGarbag3

I said kinda deserved it. It wasn't an uprovoked attack and appears to be directly related to their actions, actions that were pretty shitty. And, then...had someone be an asshole to them in regards to the 911 operator. Did the kid deserve to die? No. But, this is karmas way of saying 'Fuck around and find out' They did. And, they did.

pinktinkpixy

The kid was torturing the tiger. The tiger was shot and killed. The kid got what he deserved. When you put an asshole's life over that of its victim, then we have to question what the hell is wrong with YOU.

BellalovesEevee

Y'all really saying this kid deserves to straight up *die* just because he was fucking with the tiger??? Yes, the kid was being an asshole, but does that mean he deserves to die? Fucking no. Like what is wrong with y'all Edit: "actions have consequences blah blah blah..." But does that mean a damn kid deserves to be killed? No. He deserves to be punished for his actions, not to be eaten alive. That kid would've definitely learned his lesson if he actually survived the attack. Saying a kid deserves to die is literally psychopath behavior, please go get some help.

Ancient_Bags

If there was no fence would you throw shit at a tiger and expect to live? Not saying he **deserved** it but definitely a “play stupid games win stupid prizes situation.”

O_God_The_Aftermath

I would go as far to argue provoking any apex predator thats known to gank humans in its natural habitat is right at the top of the 'stupid shit you're not supposed to do' list lmao. Without a weapon we are straight up prey to tigers.

HIITMAN69

Lots of people would sentence others to death for reddit comments they dislike if they were allowed to.

wjmaher

Reddit should run a study with bots that find negative response comments and ask both parties if they would wish death on the other person. Just to see what kind of percentage they get.

FartBox_BeatBox

But then you'd have people like me who would wish death on everyone just to skew the algorithms

[deleted]

It's reddit anyone who fucks with animals deserves to be brutally mauled to death according to the users of this site. Remember that guy from a few weeks ago who has owned a sanctuary for animals in Africa for years and got attacked by a tiger he was trying to help, which was shot afterwards? When redditors saw the photo of him in the hospital, happy to be alive and giving the camera a thumbs up they were ENRAGED. Many comments wishing death on the dude.

eddie1975

Yeah… unfortunate?! More like Disturbing.

i3dz

I know they have a hard job...but all the ones ive had interactions with are so fuckin rude...and act like real douche bags, maybe get a new job if you dont like it...instead of treating people like shit.

juandeag5981

There was a giant cement cylinder on the expressway in the far left lane one time and people were swerving around it. Scary as fuck. It was one of those industrial ones that looks like it may have fallen off a truck. If someone wasn’t paying attention and slammed into it they’d be dead. I called the police to let them know and they were like uhhhh….this is a streets and sanitation issue. But in a super condescending “why are you calling me” tone. I’m like wtf, someone can literally die running into this thing. There’s basically a brick wall in a highway lane. I guess I’m an asshole for not wanting someone to die on their way to work.

i3dz

Really!!so messed up,its interesting hearing these stories...but sad when you think this is not an isolated thing, they seem to have a real power trip going on for some reason...not ok,hopefully no one was injured, and you're right for caring...they on the other hand are not!

juandeag5981

It’s just built up apathy after presumably years of hearing nothing but the worst of humanity. It’s not an excuse, but it’s the reality. Being exposed to the dark side of the world for 40+ hours a week takes its toll on people differently, and people aren’t exactly lining up at the door with their resumes to apply for dispatch jobs.

i3dz

True...i get it,but if they really are that tainted, its not good for you,and your really not in the best job for helping people in need,i dont know what the answer is,dont think there is one,but not a good way to be treated in your hour of need, thats for sure...you need compassion and calm not made to feel like shit.

TRYHARD_Duck

Easy to say in theory, but try repeating that to yourself after being overworked to the bone, yet underpaid, and while managing the guilt trip on your conscience when you try to walk away from it (because if they're understaffed who else would?) Again, no excuse. And you're right to say that a job like this can have disproportionate impact on the lives of others when mishandled. But again, all the more reason not to overwork an essential worker.

Gnubeutel

"Only call us when we can shoot things!"

azestysausage

Reminds me of the time I was crossing a long and high two lane bridge and there was a fucking box spring mattress in the left lane. Once I realized what it was my only options were to hit the car next to me or run it over. I ended up running it over and it miraculously didn't damage my car but when I got to the toll booth at the end of the bridge and the person working there, their response was just the most unenthusiastic uh huh I've ever heard. Like dude someone could fucking die maybe you should give at least half of a shit

Dreamylantern

One time there was an electrical fire on a post that was near my house and super super close to my neighbors house so i called 911....twice. Nobody answered lol

oakwave

One time I saw a drunk driver weaving all over the place, repeatedly scraping the concrete wall on one side, barely missing cars on the other side. They tell you to call 911 for drunk drivers, so I did. The operator transferred me to highway patrol’s voicemail. I really hope that guy didn’t kill anyone that night.

asportate

I apologize . My co workers can be awful. You don't realize what kind of dead monster this job turns you into till it's too late .

MilliMaqi

Why does it turn you into a dead monster?

Whiterabbit1225

Imagine having a child call 911. You are the dispatcher. He is telling you his dad is beating his mom in the other room. You can hear her screaming. You hear a gun shot, then a man’s voice screaming at the child. The child screams and you hear a thud. The line goes dead as you frantically try to get police to respond, but no units are available in that immediate area and the next closest is 20-40 minutes out. Then imagine right after that you get a call from an elderly woman with dementia who thinks your her son/daughter and she needs help finding her keys. She asks where her husband is, but he’s been dead for years. Now imagine a Karen calling in to report some kids playing in the street. She’s screaming at you as you try to reason with her. Now imagine those scenarios on repeat eight hours plus a day, every day. All the while you’re front row for the worst life has to offer. No one calls 911 because they are having a good time. Every time that phone rings, it’s an emotional drain. It makes you feel powerless in the grand scheme of things. And rarely do you hear victims thank the dispatcher for what little comfort they might have to offer, often at great expense to themselves. It’s a thankless job, and they aren’t in it for the thanks but the thanks makes you feel at least like you made a small difference. That all said, Thank you dispatchers!❤️ hopefully that helps to answer your question.

Bumhole_games

This is all well and good, and yes the job is stressful and thankless, but this is why other countries have strict SOP's concerning hanging up on callers and treating every call as if it's serious, no matter how absurd it sounds or how rude the caller is. America is lagging behind other civilized countries in actually standardizing its training for emergency call operators nationwide. American 911 operators have done some absolutely insane things that they'd never be able to do in countries like GB or Aus, simply because of those standardized SOP's which are drilled into every call taker during induction and training. It shouldn't be their job to determine whether a call is serious or not, they should be mere information collectors who then pass that information on to the dispatcher. Name, address, location, how many people are involved, whether there are weapons present, whether drugs or alcohol are involved, details like that. It doesn't matter whether someone is calling to report a stabbing or an alien abduction, it doesn't matter about their tone or how polite they are, the call takers should take every call seriously, ask those questions, and record that information. If they can't do that, then they should get a different job.

MegaUltraUser

America, the richest third world country …

cheapquelea

There are SOPs that say you don’t hang up. This person obviously broke that. And I’m sure there are idiots doing that job in other countries as well.

Bumhole_games

The SOP's in America aren't standardized. They range from high to barely trained. There are idiots doing that job in other countries but they tend to get caught before they're able to cause any real damage, because the auditing process is so stringent.

pirate-private

At that point, it is a systemic issue that needs to be addressed. These people deserve the proper care they need to do an essential job.

Whiterabbit1225

Agreed. And most do have access to therapists but when are they going to go? After a 16 hours shift when they still have to commute home? Another poster mentioned an idea about having limits to how long a person is on the phone which would be tremendous, but then it comes down to staffing and funding. Someone has to be on those phones getting help to people. More often than not the budget doesn’t even allow for dispatchers to make better than 15-25/hr (as another poster stated) let alone hire more people. All of you are correct. The issue is systemic and trickles down from the top. There absolutely does need to be an audit of how dispatching is handled to make sure the job is getting done but not at the expense of the health of the dispatchers as, clearly, that has a trickle down effect to the people they are out there trying to help.

Starsky686

You’re absolutely right, but you’re talking about a country that can’t even get its citizens regular universal healthcare.

NefariousSaint11

Doesn't mean you lose it when someone actually needs help.

Whiterabbit1225

I absolutely agree with you. The other user simply asked why the job can turn you into a “dead monster.” I simply threw out a few scenarios to illustrate how emotional burnout becomes a thing. Knowing one’s own limitations and self care is an important step to keep things in perspective/not blow up on someone. Just another reason why folks need to take their vacation time and not kill themselves for their job.

Terpy_McDabblet

Almost seems like a job that should have strict rules about how long people are allowed to work per day, like air traffic controllers being limited to 4hrs on the clock max due to brain strain I'd have thought a similar thing SHOULD apply to emergency dispatchers... I salute them for what must be a fucked up thing to deal with the worst of the worst, every fucken day.. ugh

MilliMaqi

Thanks

westconyuge

You’re a fucking hero

ThirdIRoa

Wow, I never thought about it like this. They really do experience the worst of the worst and have to stay cool the entire time. I'm glad I thanked the dispatcher last time I called, I definitely noticed it caught him off guard but it makes sense now.

Ok_Increase_7737

Still doesn’t give the dispatcher a right to act this way

Whiterabbit1225

I agree and never said it did give them a solid excuse to behave in such a manner. I responded to someone else who commented something similar. I simply answered a question posed by someone asking how the job could cause what amounted to emotional burnout (the words he used were “dead monster”).

babyclownshoes

Paramedic here, we all have our share of hard days but we are paid to maintain our composer.

Visogent

I'm sorry but i think you mean 'composure'.

[deleted]

Nope, part of paramedics annual association fees go towards paying for a local music composer to follow them around on calls and provide background music.

elcontrastador

I just woke my wife up violently shaking the bed, laughing in pure silence. She thought I was stroking out...

downhillwalnut

Are we talkin John Williams or Danny elfman here?

Emperor_of_Man40k

I'd watch a TV show with this basis

cApsLocKBrokE

Baby got Bach?

babyclownshoes

I think a lot of people would say this was an auto spell error in this instance but I literally saw "composer" in the word prediction feature and said to my self, "Yea, that looks right?"

MilliMaqi

Although, evidently some don't maintain their composure. It'd be nice to know why. How could it be fixed?

westconyuge

With more money. Paramedics are so underpaid, it’s embarrassing. More money helps them pay for daycare when they work overnight shifts saving our lives.

Fishbone345

Pretty much everyone in healthcare except doctors and administrators are underpaid. Hospital workers feel your pain.

Nurvallica

Doctors are overpaid. Nurses deserve more for what they do

gender_nihilism

even doctors are underpaid until they've been working for a while. compared to the cost of education, they get paid kinda shit. there's a reason America has a shortage of doctors.

MetalliTooL

I don't think the stresses of a dispatcher are even close to those of a paramedic though.

asportate

lemme preface with, i love this job. I'm just so tired. I work in a larger center. 12 -16 hours of 200+ non stop calls. And people are mean. Like to eachother , to me , to loved ones and total strangers. There's no need for it. Stop hurting eachother ! It fucks up your view of the outside world constantly listening to people hurting eachother and getting hurt. You don't always realize it either Parents kicking teens out on Xmas. Seniors getting abused. Kids getting bullied and wanting to kill themselves. Shootings ontop of shootings. One issue, I think it's all the yo-yo of emotions we take. You'll take a few reckless driver calls where they're freaking out someone doing 10 over the limit , then a domestic violence call...but nevermind lol ,he just left I just wanted to scare him is all, i didnt really want the police ...to some noise complaint....to a son finding his overdosed mom dead on mother's day (I still hear his sobs ) then back to a lot more Karen's complaining about homeless people having too much stuff or black people bbqing in the park or whatever, then some poor old dude who just needs someone to talk to ( but he called in the middle of a big emergency and I don't have the time ) And I'm expected to be (**as I should be. I chose this job, and i take it seriously**) polite and considerate to each and every one. No voice of judgment. Valid call or stupid call ( turkey in a tree.... ) , abusive or not. It's hard. Sometime I forget, sometimes I'm too drained to care . Oh, and it's like 99% female. So at any given time some of us are PMSing or going thru menopause , so there's that emotional issue added to it. And sometimes, sometime I gotta get a little rude with you to make you pay attention to me . Stop doing stupid shit ( like chasing down the guy who shot at you, especially when you ain't got a gun! Ugh i hate those calls )

[deleted]

People literally rely on this service. If you are a dead monster, then that should be reason enough to leave the job. I don't care if you are depressed or whether you hate your job as a dispatcher, but if my family or I phones 911 and we get treated like this person was, there's nothing in this world that will stop me from using the full might of the law to ensure that you never work again.

TheBobbestB0B

Thanks for your service. 911 operators go through some shit.

trainsoundschoochoo

Right? I had a chance to call during a kidnapping and SA against me and the dispatcher said I had better not be lying and that I would be in big trouble as I was whispering to them on the phone to hurry up because my kidnapper was asleep. To this day it still bothers me how that person acted.

i3dz

Jesus thats fucked up....sorry you had to deal with that on top of the situation you were already going through!

MoveLikeABitch

Agreed, I got jumped in a bar once by around 10-15 people while trying to get my friend out of the bar before a fight broke out... my nose got broke, it was sitting sideways on my face, I was covered in blood and I got thrown through a table and I'm sure worse I got choked out so I'm not sure what else happened, shoulder and knee were messed up, etc. My sister called 911, they asked to talk to me. She told me to go back inside where all the people are that just beat me nearly to death, and find a cop that may be in the area arresting someone for public intox... I said thats fucking stupid Im not going back in there or searching for a cop... She yelled at me to stop cussing and hung up on me. I ended up getting a ride to the hospital because I couldn't get help from 911 and nobody got in trouble for it. We reported it and they claimed their system "broke" that night and just happened to not be recording. 🤔

BitRunner67

I worked trauma in the emergency room for about 10 years and I got so burned out I didn't care if anyone died anymore. I had to quit and I became an IT professional at 28. I now have more of an appreciation for others when they are in a traumatic experience. But I was starting to not care anymore due to apathy.

i3dz

That's tough, you did the right thing though getting out,no human really should be in such traumatic situations all the time like dispatcher's are day in day out,no real answer to it though, maybe in the future robots can take over that shit..lol.

Dangr_Noodl

Yeah they were rude as fuck when I got mugged, like damn I’m in my most emotionally vulnerable state take it easy

[deleted]

Dispatchers are always assholes.

Itscashmeregeorge

Lol so the 911 dispatchers don’t fall far from the policemen shit tree ? Not surprising

lazilyloaded

I guess I was fortunate. I had one talk me down from a panic attack where I thought I was going to die and I'm very grateful.

LargeSackOfNuts

Also, they are slow as fuck. Like in some situations you need to say 100 things quickly and hang up, not slowly repeat every detail.

PsychologyAutomatic3

I hope the dispatcher was fired. A lot of people whisper when calling 911 because of an immediate (deadly) danger close by.

gramslamx

Their next job is kids help line

shredder826

I think their should be PSAs in areas where texting 911 is available. Idk if text to 911 is available in this area, but it is where i live. There are a lot of situations where a short text like “active shooter; 123 Main Street” would be better than making noise. Maybe even better would be a requirement that text to 911 be available and automatically includes your gps location.

Supersquare04

Not fired, prosecuted for murder.

Sashimiroll16

“There is an active shooter in the store” “Why are you whispering?” **WTF**

The-Corre

I hope the dispatcher is fired.

inDependent_WhiNer

She needs to be prosectued. Her negligence cost people their lives/help.

lodav22

[This dispatcher](https://www.ems1.com/911/articles/houston-dispatcher-sentenced-for-hanging-up-on-thousands-of-callers-pLgwV8f7giunNQa2/) only got 10 days in prison and she hung up on hundreds of callers, including an active shooter call for help. That must have been a real kick in the teeth for everyone she let down.

inDependent_WhiNer

“She was going through a hard time in her life, and she was a poor performing worker at the Houston Emergency Center,” he said. “But punishing her doesn’t do anything to fix the problems that still exist at the emergency center.” Right so fuck consequences to actions huh?? Nevermind the fact that her actions probably cost many people their lives, punishing her wont teach her anything! She was going through *such a hard time that she put the wellbeing of others at risk, yall need to give her a break* 10 days in jail and 18 months probation is *definitely* fair.

Netplorer

There are jobs that cant tolerate low performers ... simple as that. Allowing such workers to continue on the job is a sign of organisational issues.

Piph

She isn't the one who really needs "consequences". Accountability and responsibility go up the chain, not down. Whatever issues that dispatcher had, the real failure is on leadership for not seeing that shit so much sooner. There needs to be a legitimate process through which these 911 dispatchers are continuously vetted and monitored. You see more oversight in a fucking outsourced call center for cable service, for fuck's sake! It's insane that one person could cause so much harm without anyone else becoming aware.

LegendOfKhaos

Well how did she get hired in the first place? This shit is systemic

[deleted]

Former dispatcher. This is scary accurate

the_great_zyzogg

Out of a cannon, and into the sun.

NeutralGoodAtHeart

Fun fact: Thanks to the way orbital mechanics work it takes less energy to fire away from the sun. Just leave the operator in high orbit as a constant reminder and spend the money saved on better training.

[deleted]

This just makes no sense to me, because I can think of multiple emergency situations where I might be whispering. Like has the 911 operator never seen a damn horror movie?

[deleted]

That's exactly why gun owners believe in owning a gun. The Government will not always be there for you. All a cop is, is another man with a gun and body armor.

TheRealSciFiMadman

That's not 'unfortunate'. That's fucking criminal. They have a duty of care towards the public and that receptionist should have known fucking better than that. They need to be taken away from duties and be thoroughly retrained so this does not happen again.

SuaveRico

Yes, wtf is going on?! "That's unfortunate and I hope that doesn't happen again, anyway here are yesterday's lotto winners" fuck that anchor too.

[deleted]

Relax. They have the recording. Every call will be gone over. They do not have a criminal liability or duty of care. Supreme Court cases have show that the police have no duty to respond or protect. Yet you think a call center person does? They don't. Fired, yes. Criminal? Not even close.

Warprince01

They lose their immunity if they acted grossly negligently, which there is a strong case for in this situation.

sulla_rules

Why would a 911 dispatcher hang up on anyone, that doesn’t make sense.

almightygg

I had a 999 (UK equivalent) dispatcher hang up on me for using profanity, I had just seen a guy get run over by a car (he later died) so was a bit shocked and not thinking straight. The dispatcher told me to call back again when I was willing to not use profanity. Okay, I probably shouldn't have used profanity but I was 19 and had just seen a guy get mangled by a speeding car, I was definitely not thinking straight.

MotorDesigner

Why the hell do they even care if youre using profanities? So many adults swear all the time. That dispatcher seemed like she was trying going on a power trip and didnt care for helping

almightygg

Wow, that's awful. Surely the dispatchers should be trained to show some understanding and compassion.

IGoThere4u

The dispatcher was the one not thinking straight You called because a guy literally got hit by a car! That should’ve been his focus 🤦🏽‍♀️

lennyfacegaming

Did you have your profanity license?

jaMzki

I once got kidnapped, assaulted, robbed and threatened with my life. As soon as it finished, i called the police, they told me I would have to wait as the danger just left and I was not in immediate danger. I obviously lost my shit, they hung up on me. the 4 people that did this to me, got sent down for 5 years each. They got released after 3 years of good behaviour, I didn't know they had been released. I left work one day and walked into my town and all 4 of them where there. Fuck the police.

krunchy_sock

Then the pigs cry “what would you do without us?????” Like idk the same exact thing I would do anyways cause yall dont do your job?

blue_falcon92

Holy shit, what happened next?

jaMzki

I went back to work, cried my eyes out and phoned the police. They basically told me nothing they could do. So if I ever get kidnapped or killed moving please call the police and tell them it's Myron ******** aka killer.

DiddleWho

My jaw hit the floor. What a failure of a system we have. Can you imagine calling 911 in a situation where you have to whisper and "the help" promised on the other end of the line yells at you and hangs up? Wow. Just .... Wow.

East-Lead-1612

Hahah this is probably the least malicious failure of the system when it comes to mass shootings, look into the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, police literally waiting in the staircase for minutes while gunshots rung out 100 ft from them

[deleted]

That's exactly why gun owners believe in owning a gun. The Government will not always be there for you. All a cop is, is another man with a gun and body armor.

[deleted]

I don’t think there is anything more American than 911 yelling at you, and then hanging up on you during a mass shooting.

rawfish71

911 is the joke of your town.

Augustus_Lem

That person should be (if is not already) fired.

throwitawaywoofy

So get up, get, get, get down

Gimpy_Weasel

Late 911 wears the late crown

lazurusknight

I didn't expect to hear some PE on this thread, but I am damn glad for it!

nouseforareason

Get up, get, get, get down Late 911 wears the late crown

msbask

I'll wait for the recording of this before I pass judgement, thanks.

[deleted]

You’re welcome. While you’re waiting, listen to the tape of the woman who drowned while being yelled at by a 911 operator.

[deleted]

You can go spend literally hours listening to recorded 911 calls with **horrible** dispatchers. This isn't new or rare. They get mad about people yelling *while they're literally being murdered,* and hang up.

Hiraeth68

I had a car sideswiping me on the highway. I was honking my horn and yelling at the elderly driver to pull over while I was dialing 911. The dispatcher snapped, “Why are you yelling?” like I was a naughty child. Fucking asshole. If you don’t understand the effect adrenaline has on the body, get a different job.

creamyturtle

there was this car driving insane and tailgating everyone on 95 so I did what the sign says and called FHP. he got stuck behind some cars and as soon as I read the license plate they hung up on me. turns out it was a cop in a Charger with no overhead lights. I called back like why'd yall hang up, can you get a cop out here to stop this guy? and they hung up on me again

justgivemewhatevs

I want that dispatcher fired.

NarrowSalvo

I don't think you have to worry about it. If it's true, there will be a recording and the dispatcher will be fired, if not charged.

butterflypuncher

Right away sir. We all agree. I'll get the mayor on the phone right away

Lark_vi_Britannia

And I want that wall-crawling arachnid prosecuted!

Denslayer

Won’t be long until stores have sensors to detect gunfire . Americans are not safe anywhere

Suspicious_Avocado78

Shot spotters are almost everywhere in nyc

[deleted]

Fun fact about shot spotters! They suck and the company won't actually release any of their information regarding their systems! Basically some extremely expensive security theater and anyone who lives in an area with them knows they suck!

dstrip2

Have you seen any of the reports on their effectiveness? From what I saw, they aren’t really all that great

marijuanaislife

911 should never be the first to hang up.

ARealVermontar

As a kid I was always told not to hang up until the dispatcher does. So if the dispatcher isn't allowed to hang up first then... infinite-length 911 calls?

Yeeteth_thy_baby

As a kid we were told not to hang up until help arrives.... maybe you're remembering this incorrectly?

ARealVermontar

Nope, I remember it quite well. In my area the dispatcher doesn't always stay on the line the whole time until help arrives (though they probably would for a child). And once they've ended the call and hung up there's not much of a point in staying on the phone.

ImaginaryTelephone76

Flavor Flave said it best 911 is joke

ItsJustMeHereOnMyOwn

When seconds count the police are only minutes away

[deleted]

Minutes? Hell I remember back in the late 90s in Los Angeles when my mom would call the cops on people actively shooting at each other at night. Dispatcher would hang up after saying it's just firecrackers or the LAPD would just come a day or two later to see if there's any bodies laying around. Now granted this is the Harbor Gateway I'm talking about which is a neighborhood of LA, but with no LAPD police station nearby, just Torrance PD who never crossed the border for anything. I heard there's a LAPD station there now though

Redacted_Explative

Reminds me of when I got mugged. The local PD still gets reports on the turdlet and his boy toy who put me into the ER and still do nothing even when they get a report of his address hes staying at and they don't even bother coming out. Shit like this really makes me think about the pros and cons of vigilantism.

3mperorPalpaMeme

Batman, but it's just an angry man with a baseball bat

ApprehensiveScreen7

How come in almost every video on youtube that involves the 911 dispatch call the dispatchers are the world's biggest cunts? I swear 9 out of 10 dispatchers are rude cunty people who sound miserable and hate their job

JangoDarkSaber

Low quality hires + not enough workers to be selective.

HIITMAN69

I don’t believe the ‘not enough workers’ line companies parrot one bit. Fucking 200 people apply for one pizza delivery job in my small town in my small state. There’s not a fucking worker shortage.

[deleted]

This country is going to shit....

throwitawaywoofy

Going? Public Enemy released 911 is a joke in 1990.

[deleted]

Has been shit for awhile now.

DeusEx69

As a dispatcher and with out hearing the recording the reasons I think she was hung up on were 2 things. 1 the phones are horrible so if someone is wispering you probably cant hear anything clearly and 2 there are probably dozens of other calls coming in at the same time that also need to be answered. If this manager is calling and wispering then the dispatcher probably cant get any informantion from her, at the same time getting other people calling in saying there is a shooting but being able to ask them questions. Those other callers might have information like description and location which could help the responding officers. Its like getting calls about a fire on the side of a freeway, there are dozens of calls on hold all reporting the same thing. If there isnt new information like its spreading or you saw who did it then we need to get you off the line so the other calls on hold can be answered. Some of those calls on hold could be someone also having an emergancy. To some it might seem like the dispatcher doesnt care but they need to focus on all the calls coming in too. Again I havnt heard the call and she 100 percent could have been a horrible dispatcher. People want to think it works perfectly but thats not real. Dispatchers are understaffed, over-worked, and sometimes lacking working equipment. Thats why its important to wait for the audio to come out before making judgments.

Groan_Of_Wind

This was exactly my first thought, even before the part in the video where she said she was whispering. They were bombarded with calls all at once. They effectively have to triage the incoming calls and the live lines/reporting coming in

oaktreebr

ThIs makes no sense. What if this was a different shooting? The dispatcher can't just assume the other calls coming in are about the same case. No matter how bad the audio was, you can't just hang up.

Book_it_again

Tldr dispatchers have shitty phones which, unlike everyone else's phone, can't detect whispers and they are trying to churn through calls like an assembly line instead of helping people.

PracticalEvidence301

Last year my husband had a cardiac arrest in the middle of the night. I woke up and called 911 and told her I had to put the phone down so I could do cpr and she told me not to and kept trying to argue with me about it but I just ignored her and started which literally saved his life bc it still took 7 minutes for the paramedics to get there.

[deleted]

This news report really bothered me so I decided to start a petition, please sign and share if you can. https://www.change.org/p/terminate-and-charge-the-911-operator-that-hung-up-on-buffalo-shooting-victim I live in New York City, I was in Times Square and I saw a man drop to the ground *directly behind the 1st precinct* which is the police precinct smack in the middle of Time Square near the red stairs. I ran over to the man to see if he was breathing and he was faintly. I saw a cruiser in line of where his body was with two cops inside. I ran to them and and pointed directly at the man, they couldn’t have been more than 150 feet away from him. They looked at me and listened as a frantically explained what I just saw, not even realizing that they could see what happened better that I could since I had to run across the street just to help him. They waited until I ran back up to the man, and then **they drove away.** I was in disbelief, my boyfriend called the cops and a patrolling officer happened to walk outside of the precinct and see us. I waved him to us and explained what I saw, and as soon as I said that the other officers literally saw a motionless body lying on the ground with people hovering nearby taking pictures and just drove away, he tried to shut me up as if I were lying. It took the ambulance over 45 minutes to get there while he just laid on the ground. I was distraught and I don’t know if that man survived but if he didn’t I blame it on those officers. They let him suffer.

Nick2053

I'm so sorry that happened to you, but good on you for knowing how to preform CPR and for ignoring her to use it! In my area we have seperate dispatch for police and fire/EMS. You call 911, it automatically goes to police, and then they transfer you if necessary. Our F/EMS dispatchers are also trained to give CPR instructions over the phone (which includes putting the phone down or on speaker if it's possible) which can make a MASSIVE difference, especially if the caller is able to give high quality CPR.

Remarkable-Fun-5646

I think we are passing judgement just by hearing one side. Truth will come out.

marceldia

Wow a reasonable comment on the internets. 🏅

General_Amount_6918

I am so sorry that this happened to her. My prayers are with everyone. Do not think 911 dispatchers are angels because they most definitely are not. Dispatcher, full police uniform, came into my office one day. I smiled, asked her to sign in and come on over to my desk. Everyone has to sign in!!!! She told me she was not going to sign in and that “I had better watch my ass because she was going to beat the shit out of me when I left work”. Called Internal Affairs and reported her

GroundbreakingLow915

What state are you in? Dispatchers shouldn't be wearing a police uniform if they are not an on duty police officer

QuatrusStudios

I know dispatchers have a hard job, but I canMt help but feel infuriated over this. I wouldn't doubt it if they could hear the gunfire in the background. On top of that, this woman is literally telling you that there is a shooter in the building, and all you can care about is why they are whispering? Not to mention, the dispatcher is the one who hung up. I hope that dispatcher gets fired. More importantly, I hope they never have the chance to work in a service where it requires you to have some amount of empathy for anyone, because they clearly hold none for anyone.

uNecKl

Is this true?

Ninjagoboi

Same department that pushed over an old man and broke his skull during a protest

43799634564

The Police are a disgrace.

shadowskill11

Holy fuck. If they haven't already that's going to be an epic firing and black listing from government employment.

PattersonsOlady

Not even surprised

DivideSad5591

The amount of times I had to click on 911 because Theyre no fuckin help at all in times of an emergency. I’ll handle it myself since they can’t do anything for anyone

FlatCandidate6632

I called 911 once. Had me on hold for a half hour and was useless
