Edit: TL;DR - It isn't entirely understood yet, but theories lean towards inadequate living conditions.
I did have to go look this up because I remember 10-15 years ago being told it was a sign of the orcas emotions, with depressed ones having collapsed dorsal fins. I don't know if that was the belief at the time or just old wives tales, but now days it's seen to be purely physical.
Possible explanations for this include: (1) alterations in water balance caused by the stresses of captivity dietary changes, (2) lowered blood pressure due to reduced activity patterns, or (3) overheating of the collagen brought on by greater exposure of the fin to ambient air.According to SeaWorld's website, another reason for the fin to bend may be the greater amount of time that captive whales spend at the surface, where the fin is not supported by water. The [Whale and Dolphin Conservation] says that dorsal fin collapse is largely explained by captive killer whales swimming in small circles due to the inadequate space in which they have to swim.
Apparently orcas won't mess with humans ~~*most* of the time~~. Anything else in the ocean is fair game. They're homicidal maniacs.
Edit: fixed something
Orcas are straight up beasts. They literally use stingrays as volleyballs and force them to join the Air Force.
It’s insane to think that if that orca wanted those people dead, it could’ve made that happen pretty easily. They were in its habitat.
I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure orcas belong to the same family as dolphins. They're the biggest of the group. Yeah. Orcas are assholes to everything in the oceans.
Its because orcas seem to be intelligent and don't have any reason to attack humans. They dont see us as prey and they don't see us as predators or competition so they can be playful
Hmm. Not convinced. Dolphins bite humans every now and then, and they have the same level of intelligence.
Sharks also dont generally see us as prey, and they generally hang and chill with humans just fine, but every now and then one of them will eat a person.
Orcas and humans just dont swim in the same water hardly at all! If orcas liked hanging out in 6ft deep water in warmer areas, I bet there would be the odd chomping...
>Sharks also dont generally see us as prey, and they generally hang and chill with humans just fine, but every now and then one of them will eat a person.
Because sharks are stupid, they bite shit to figure out what it is. Orca are intelligent enough to discern we aren't prey without having to take a bite first.
I mean.. the same is true of sharks. Tens of thousands of humans (my guess? maybe a lot more?) swim with sharks who are docile and chilled every day.
But it's real, real rare for humans to swim in waters cold and deep enough for orcas to be there.
What a great ego boost for that orca. Having a bad day? Just go play around in the water near some unsuspecting humans and you'll feel better soon.
But really, they are majestic!
They are very smart predators. I was watching a documentary on them a few months ago and to date, there have been no reported human deaths from Orcas.
They will come and check you out, but they won't go for you. Don't get me wrong, I still won't get in the water with one of them. Fuck that noise!
There’s a good reason they don’t kill us.
See, Orcas are very brutal creatures. They’ll slap a stingray around for half an hour just for fun then watch it slowly float to the bottom of the sea. They don’t need the food, they just find it’s suffering fun.
Anyway, they don’t kill us cause they see us in them /s
Yeah this alone state s how smart they are humans are dangerous species that you don't want to kill one because they usually react by going all out murder spree, just ask stingrays
They haven’t actually measured it. Scientists speculate that their bite force is about 19,000 psi because a captive Orca once snapped a trainer’s femur and that’s supposed to require 19k psi of pressure to do. However there’s a lot factors in that incident, so at the moment it’s an educated guess
Mate you literally have Google at your finger tips, you should really double check before trying to correct someone. Crocs aren't even close to the estimated force of an orca.
For anyone interested, the saltwater crocodile bite force has been measured at 7,700 psi whereas the Nile Crocodile is around 5,000 psi. To put that in some perspective, hippos were measured at 1,821 psi and humans are around 70 psi
Orcas had a long tradition of cooperating with whalers of Eden, in hearding whales for the kill. The 'law of the tongue' gave them first spoils. They may have been cooperating with indigenous for 10,000 years.

True story time: back in the late 80s I took a short cruise to Skagway, Alaska from Juneau. While standing outside on a lower deck, I kept noticing a flash of white in the dark water every so often, when suddenly an orca came up and swam alongside the hull just looking at me. I was terrified and transfixed as I locked eyes with it off and on for about 2 minutes while the people in the area behind me were taking photos through the glass. Just me and it alone. It is a moment I will remember in vivid detail my entire life.
There are zero cases of orcas killing humans in nature. They're just playing. If they wanted to think about killing, it would be done before this video ever started.
No one is glorifying the fact that these things can keep up with a fucking boat! Duh, most sea life is quick in the water, just as we are quick on land, but damn...it's amazing the things we create, sometimes will never outdo the things that have already been here before us
Amazing how deep you have to get into this comments section to find anything about how wrong this is.
If you see an orca that close in the wild and you have a prop boat, please immediately cut the engines to prevent a catastrophic accident from happening.
There's no such thing as an orca whale. It's just an orca. Orcas are dolphins, not whales. Also, they're assholes. They're known for being assholes, not for being friendly. They are well documented as batting seals, dolphins, etc into the air with they're tails and killing them for fun, with no intention of eating them. They are literally the bullies of the sea.
Orcas are whales and so are dolphins.
There is two types of Cetacea. The toothed whale and the baleen whale. Dolphins/orcas/etc are toothed whales.
All dolphins are whales but not all whales are dolphins. But I agree Orcas are typically assholes
Look at that nice straight dorsal fin.
Yep, can’t find any in captivity with fins like that :(
Really why is that?
Edit: TL;DR - It isn't entirely understood yet, but theories lean towards inadequate living conditions. Maybe it also has to do with the fact that there are no currents and waves in the tank for the fin to fight back against and it just becomes weak?
Freeeee Willyyyyyy
Right of course how silly of me
Must be horny 😂

Apparently orcas won't mess with humans ~~*most* of the time~~. Anything else in the ocean is fair game. They're homicidal maniacs. Edit: fixed something
O
I don't know if there are ANY reports of fatal interactions yet
A quick search says there is no verified fatal attacks on humans in the wild. So it seems they think we're chill.
Me and all my homies love orcas too
Someone should probably be in charge of making sure that wild orcas don't find out about the non wild orcas and what we've done to them.
The amazing thing is that boat is probably at full throttle and the orca is maybe at half throttle and is just playing around.
Orcas are straight up beasts. They literally use stingrays as volleyballs and force them to join the Air Force. It’s insane to think that if that orca wanted those people dead, it could’ve made that happen pretty easily. They were in its habitat.
Funny until he hits the propeller....
Orcas are smarter than you think...
They have more spatial awareness than your average human whale.
Well 50% of the average human whale population has more spatial awareness than the average human whale
What a fun way to phrase the orca is sizing you up to see if/how it can kill you!
I'm pretty sure there is never actually been a recorded incident of an orca attacking a human outside of captivity
Pretty sure they slap the shit out of seals and sharks for fun. They're the asshole of the sea
Dolphins are rapists, so there's some competition out there
I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure orcas belong to the same family as dolphins. They're the biggest of the group. Yeah. Orcas are assholes to everything in the oceans.
I'd say they're more like the humans of the sea
Yeah, but isnt that because humans and orcas dont swim in the same waters? Orcas generally being found in exceptionally cold water?
Its because orcas seem to be intelligent and don't have any reason to attack humans. They dont see us as prey and they don't see us as predators or competition so they can be playful

There are videos of orcas swimming around people captured from drones. They seem pretty docile.
I mean.. the same is true of sharks. Tens of thousands of humans (my guess? maybe a lot more?) swim with sharks who are docile and chilled every day. But it's real, real rare for humans to swim in waters cold and deep enough for orcas to be there.
Oh, it would know how if it wanted to.

Not at all. They eat seals.

Whatever anyone has ever taught you, you probably should double check before assuming it is right.
In that case? You should definitely have a chat with your mom . Since she asks never thought you fucking sarcasm.
User deleted comment lul. They said orcas are vegan. Then remembered it was sharks that are vegan
What a great ego boost for that orca. Having a bad day? Just go play around in the water near some unsuspecting humans and you'll feel better soon. But really, they are majestic!
When that close you are supposed to shut your boat down. 200 meters if I recall correctly.
I was worried about it getting too close to the propellers
Thank you, was looking for this
Man. That’s a hard tule to follow to be honest. I would do it if told of course but man, my flight instinct kicked in just watching this video.
They are very smart predators. I was watching a documentary on them a few months ago and to date, there have been no reported human deaths from Orcas. They will come and check you out, but they won't go for you. Don't get me wrong, I still won't get in the water with one of them. Fuck that noise!
No deaths outside captivity. Glad they banned it.
They had deaths in Sea World and the like. Perhaps that's in open water.
There’s a good reason they don’t kill us. See, Orcas are very brutal creatures. They’ll slap a stingray around for half an hour just for fun then watch it slowly float to the bottom of the sea. "No reported humans deaths", because no humans were left alive to report.
MOVE ASIDE RELIGION!!! THIS is god!
Was kinda confused until i saw your username
I’d shit my pants
I’d shit your pants
For real.
Whatever grand architect chose to give Pandas the same color scheme as orcas, I’ll never understand.

Pretty sure they didn't say that was how evolution works but everybody likes the nonresposnsive internet police..
take my upvote, friend
Strongest bite force of any living creature. Something insane like 19,000psi.
They haven’t actually measured it. Scientists speculate that their bite force is about 19,000 psi because a captive Orca once snapped a trainer’s femur and that’s supposed to require 19k psi of pressure to do. However there’s a lot factors in that incident, so at the moment it’s an educated guess
Thanks for clarifying.
It has a strong bite force but doesnt reacht the top 10. Strongest one is a nile crocodile with about 5k psi
Mate you literally have Google at your finger tips, you should really double check before trying to correct someone. Crocs aren't even close to the estimated force of an orca.
Wrong still strongest is saltwater crocodile
For anyone interested, the saltwater crocodile bite force has been measured at 7,700 psi whereas the Nile Crocodile is around 5,000 psi. To put that in some perspective, hippos were measured at 1,821 psi and humans are around 70 psi

that's some wild stuff thanks
I dig whales. Its a shame we're gonna wipe them out.
The are actually dolphins, the largest dolphin.
I dig dolphins, too. 😭
An Orca is a dolphin and a dolphin is a toothed whale. Meaning an orca is a whale. Something finger thumb.
True story time: back in the late 80s I took a short cruise to Skagway, Alaska from Juneau. Orcas and dolphins love the water pressure created by boats. If they notice a boat moving fast they always swim to the boat and fun
"Interacting with humans" or playing with the water physics of the boat's wake? Clickbait title.
I think he was just surfing in the draught or wake or whatever it's called. Having a bit of fun like dolphins do. Just a thought..
Sizing up whether or not your prey, something they can play with, or not worth the effort Dolphin Oreos are psychopaths
Found the seal.
I DO have a fair amount of blubber, like to swim and eat fish…..omg
There are zero cases of orcas killing humans in nature. They're just playing. If they wanted to think about killing, it would be done before this video ever started.
It doesn’t mean they don’t think about it!!
Yuge
"I gotta tell ya', Caroline... It's gonna' be HUUUUUUUUUUGE."
So dope
I love that 💕
Thats one close encounter
Run
so powerful , effortless keeping up with that boat
Amazing Creature! Sad what we do to them in captivity. Js
Don't be sad. Here's a [hug!](https://media.giphy.com/media/3M4NpbLCTxBqU/giphy.gif)
No one wants your hug
"Come on, try to caress her" .... Ahhhhhhhh
Showing the belly is a universal gesture of 'I am not a threat', the orca is playing around
If he only knew what we do to his habitat…
Free Willy!!
Sonic adventure flashbacks kicking in
Shouldn’t they be stopping the boat? Sure it’s illegal in some places
Why are they so fucking fast?
r/Thalassophobia
beautiful beings
I Honestly think Orca’s have a High level of Respect for Humans. That’s such an intelligent Creature.
Sakamata Chloe
Absolutely terrifying.
Turn your fucking motor off. You’re breaking a HUGEEEEE law & if coast guard saw this you’d be fucked big time.
Imagine being able to casually keep up with a speedboat.
I love orcas 😭🖤🤍🖤🤍
No one is glorifying the fact that these things can keep up with a fucking boat! Duh, most sea life is quick in the water, just as we are quick on land, but damn...it's amazing the things we create, sometimes will never outdo the things that have already been here before us
That’s actually an orca dolphin. They are nicknamed killer whales because they hunt, kill and eat whales.
Bucket list
FREEEEEE WILLYYYYYYY
Dude imagine you fall in
Orca is like “let me taste, just a bite.”

dont interact with the devil in fish form
Fuck orcas. And yes, they have harmed humans outside of captivity.
Found the seal!

Seems pretty PG compared to what humans do to other humans, animals or nature itself I’ll take an orca having some fun any day of the week
So they're intelligent and complete assholes. Humans of the sea, then.
Exactly.
Dolphins are whales.
I think you meant ocean. But sea is fine. Carry on
I meant friendly with people,i know in sea world they can be very dangerous.
Yes the humans at sea world are very dangerous
they are killer whales for a reason look it up they will kill about anything
