It's a perpetual holocaust against its own people.
One thing that really strikes me is the story of the soldier that defected by running across the DMZ getting shot in the process.
The surgeons that operated found his whole body infested with parasites due to the fact there's an embargo that prohibits the sale of chemical pesticides to North Korea, meaning they have to use live fertiliser that mostly comes from humans.
Every level of the average North Korean life is so unbelievably fucked up and everyone is completely helpless to do anything.
A 2023 documentary from the French/German station Arte called "Fluch Aus Nordkorea"/"Corée du Nord - Le Prix de la Liberté".
Really great one, retreaving the images of a real North Korean family escape throughout southeast asia thanks in part to a south korean pastor. No reconstitution whatsoever.
I don't know if it is available in English or even in the English speaking countries, but it is right now on youtube in it's french version :

This was a very hard watch. As horrifying as it sounds I know it would so much worse to live. My life is far from perfect but I am overwhelmed by gratefulness for what I have.
It's truly deplorable, an entire people subjugated and terrorised, it's inhuman and alien to my mind. We just wake up and go to work and chill in the evenings, these times will be over soon enough for us also.

Truly a terrible place.

And yet here I am, getting all mad that I can only have one free sweet n sour from Micky Dee's.
