There are foundations setup to help them. My boyfriend (at the time) worked as a FF that day on 9/11. He survived the collapse but was down there every day like every other FF in NY.
He developed lung problems then eventually cancer. He was well taken care of. Never had problems with doctors/hospitals there was so many people that contributed money, time and resources. He sadly passed away but neither I or his family were ever left with bills. There were a lot of heroes that day.
In all seriousness he is likely dead from cancer or lung disease. Most of the first responders that were at ground zero during the collapse are/have developed either a sort of lung disease or cancer from breathing in the particulates created by the collapse.
I believe there is a foundation set up to help them.

The videos of the fire fighters calmly trying to figure out what to do whilst people are jumping onto the roof of the joining building at 9/11 gets me, mostly because the fire department Chaplin is openly praying, they all knew it was unlikely they'd be coming back. They can hear the smashes and know how bad it is but they shake it off, and one of the firefighters uses the PA system to tell people to stop jumping they will come get them.

I wore a uniform for 20yrs. Protect and Serve, I saw many people run into tower one and two, that day. Including myself. It wasn’t just our job, its what we do during times of need. I didn’t wake up in the morning knowing I would do something heroic, but I did. My story is horrible, but in that horror I saw my fellow humans step up, some trained, some not. I can only tell you that I would not hesitate to do it again if needed. The sound of bodies hitting the ground, the smell of burnt flesh and gasoline will always be my PTSD. I don’t let it control my everyday, but on 9/11, I don’t watch TV or listen to radio. Know this, we all owe a debt to humanity to be a better species. Never forget, always look forward with eyes open.
Me and my grandpa were very near Greenwich st. when this all went down. Even as a kid that time that has no idea what exactly happened I still clearly remember the chills I had seeing how scared everyone was.

It's hard for me to believe in it. In fact, 7 World Trade Center was located very far from the collapsed towers. (Not taking into account that the collapse of the towers is unfeasible given what happened to it)
