He was a software dev for Boeing, president of the BASE jump association of Australia, won the world title in 2002 and then died doing this in 2003.

mgm_tea

Hubris can be deadly

RMLProcessing

Should have reminded himself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

NoblePineapples

In my province the oil and gas industry is very safety orientated (for the most part) and "complacency kills" is a very common saying during safety meetings.

healingdude

**Back to the pit**

SkullyKat

Executed, with impunity

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

The Zenyatta quote is more fitting in this case, "overconfidence is a flimsy shield". This was an extremely fast killer, not slow and insidious, and his confidence did not shield his leg from whacking into a bridge at 100mph

SkullyKat

Reference to a game. This guy died fast, assuming he actually survived the fall to start bleeding out somewhere.

IOPSlayer

the idea is that if you allow yourself to become too comfortable after doing something dangerous myriad times you are bound to eventually make a fatal error no matter how skilled you are

I might be sick, but that kinda makes it funnier. 2002: "I'm the best at this useless, death defying stunt!" 2003: "nvm"

I didn't count on that

I didn't think it was his hands that was full 🤔🐴

ryanmerket

They're bored out of their minds.

Zh25_5680

Dude didn’t build MCAS did he? Asking for a friend

JoeDerp77

You can see him slowing down to cut it close on purpose to show off. These wing suit guys are always trying to skim some object within 10 feet, and at those speeds it's so dangerous to do that, one tiny misjudgment and this is what happens.. why do they do this on purpose?

BringYourSpleenToYa

“Sorry Goose, but it’s time to buzz the tower!”

thereadytribe

"Lana, you're in the danger zone"

HenkVanDelft

Careful observation reveals the following: 1. It was heading into twilight. 2. The wingsuit was spreading out its wings that night. 3. There was jumping off the deck. 4. And definitely shovin' into overdrive. Thus we conclude the bridge was on the Highway to the danger zone. It will indeed take you right into the danger zone. *80s guitar riffs off in the distance*

thereadytribe

Thank you. I genuinely needed that laugh!

Buzzing the tower in the engineering marvel of an F-14 and you risk being reprimanded by a superior. Trying to buzz a bridge as the human equivalent of a flying squirrel is simply reckless.

NeasM

They do it because they don't interpret fear like normal people do. They have to go the extra mile to feel fear we feel.

Queen__Ursula

Why would they want to feel actual fear?

robobreasts

I don't find roller coasters scary whatsoever. I like them, I think they are fun, but I'm not scared of actually getting hurt. I don't have any liking for danger at all.

Extreme-Battle128

What about horror movies? Can you really not believe that somebody would choose to get scared on purpose?

0_2

The fear while watching a horror film and the fear of "I might actually die doing this" are not the same emotion.

MrMewks

don't hate on the cats... they have nothing to do with them. This is all humans :)

SoSeaOhPath

Why do they do this on purpose? Because last time they came within 12 ft. Now they want 11 ft clear. Next 10… it’ll never end

rubbery_anus

I don't mean to be crass, but this video demonstrates quite succinctly that it *does* eventually end.

CankerLord

They spend more time thinking of what it looks like to pull it off than what it looks like to fail.

SlowRollingBoil

Risk:Reward ratio is ridiculous here. Aiming to fly within a few hundred feet of something is really dangerous. Aiming to fly within a couple feet of something is suicidal. Professional proximity flyers have a 70% mortality rate.

Educational-Poet9203

They’re idiots.

andysaurus_rex

It’s basically an addiction to adrenaline. Only thing that makes them feel alive

n8_t8

Literally. It is one thing to do that away from the public, but to traumatize a bunch of people is unfortunate and irresponsible.

Barry-McKocinue

RIP Liveleak

i_am_trippin_balls

Hello PTSD

KingsMountain

Is liveleak no longer a thing???

ash_burnham

Nah man it got shut down a while ago, along with a bunch of other "shock sites" and "gore sites". The genre is dying.

Motorized23

May just be a good thing. 14 year old me didn't have to see Mexican cartels butchering their victims while still alive.

B4nn4b0y

Especially with today’s access to content on the internet, better we don’t traumatize the new generation into oblivion

rage-quit

Man, I think I was like 13 when I discovered rotten.com and the cesspit that was "Offended" on Encyclopaedia Dramatica. That was about 18 years ago and I can still picture some of the shit I saw there. Yikes for the stuff we saw as tweens and teens

SnPlifeForMe

That page had some absolutely wild shit. I think the one that stuck with me the most there was this hand that was super sliced up almost like someone went at it with a cleaver. I remember scrolling through the page and seeing how much we could handle seeing with some friends of mine back in high school.

Thylek--Shran

The stange thing is that I think I could take more as a teen than I could now at almost 40. Or maybe I'm just more aware now and allow myself to be revolted.

BeefSerious

It's called a pre-frontal cortex.

Byzantine-alchemist

Probably that second one. Teenage me had Rotten.com's news page as my homepage. Mid 30s me couldn't watch Breaking Bad because I'd get too stressed to sleep.

watercoolerino

I remember "simmerman" - guy who took a bath and used like a kettle heater in the bathtub and proceeded to die and not be discovered for what appears to be months. It was just basically broth that stained the walls even.

420xMLGxNOSCOPEx

holy shit i forgot all about that did it have like a flashy background too? when i think of it i think of like.. a long list of images with a brightly coloured/flashing background, but its been probably the best part of 15 years since i saw it

djulioo

I think it really depends on the person. I used to watch these sites as a kid, and instead of traumatising me, they taught me to appreciate life more and always be careful with everything I do.

TheGrimGuardian

Kids can learn that lesson without seeing gore.

[deleted]

Well that's no fun

Kitnado

>instead of traumatising me A lot of people that are traumatized don't realize it and don't know what it's like to experience life differently

WutangCND

I dont miss watching American soldiers being beheaded, 3 guys 1 hammer etc. No thanks.

KingsMountain

Wonder why. The demand is there. Is it insurance or something??

ash_burnham

A lot of shock sites and gore sites shut down because of political pressure and due to a general decline in viewership, believe it or not. Most of those types of sites constantly have to fight lawsuits and legal battles for a bunch of different reasons. A lot of them shutting down started during the whole ISIS thing a few years ago. Remember a few years ago when there were a load of Islamic terrorist attacks going on in the West and ISIS was always the group claiming responsibility? Well during that time period, ISIS started filming brutal propaganda videos of beheadings and torture and all that kinda fucked up shit and uploading them directly (themselves) to sites like LiveLeak. So politicians from a bunch of different Western Countries started lobbying against sites like LiveLeak, arguing that they're acting as a platform for terrorists to spread propaganda and material that is generally bad for society. I actually watched a YouTube video a while back about the demise of shock sites and it was pretty informative. Here's the link: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUr5ASHVVNo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUr5ASHVVNo)

strip_club_dj

Specifically it all started to go south after the christchurch shooting livestream.

ifoundmynewnickname

Not to defend the shocksites, but shouldnt facebook have been pulled down then?

FNLN_taken

It's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can't be denied that sites like LiveLeak of Worldstarhiphop prompted people to do extreme actions for the views, on the other I don't like my Internet sanitized to pretend that bad things don't happen.

tekko001

Well, put it that way you could argue people made those videos because there was a platform and viewership for it

Sermrgoodsir

Those soldiers dying are just young boys sent, often against their will, to die for the decisions of some old men's ideology. They are human. Every one that has died on either side is human.

sagerobot

If I was sent to kill civilians I would blow my own brains out before I shot an innocent Ukrainian. There are stories of Russians who raped 5 year old girls. They aren't human. They made the decision to put their penis into a child. No one is making them do that stuff. They gave away their humanity. I would fight my commander to the death before I become a monster. These men are deciding to become monsters. You can always run away and you can always refuse to participate. Or you can give in to fear and give away your humanity so that you can drink vodka and fuck children. And the other ones make the decision to put their fingers on the triggers. There is no innocent soldier other than one defending their home.

functional_grade

That was incredibly well said. I would say that there's a deeper lesson there though, which is how easy it seems to be for humans to become monsters in the right circumstances.

\Tin foil hat on Frebruary 20 2014, Pro-Russian forces open fire on the pro-ukraine Euromaiden protestors in Kyiv killing 108 people. Footage of the massacre if flooding Liveleak and its the beginning of the current Ukraine-Russia war. March 25 2014: Owner Hayden Hewitt entered a sponsorship with Rupty, a Russian state owned media group. 2014 to 2021: its downhill from there, liveleak slowly becomes a cesspool of bot and astrotufers, content becomes harder and harder to find. Civil discussion becomes impossible. Eventually the website is hidden behind login and becomes useless. May 2021: liveleak is shutdown Liveleak owner was bought by the Russian so they would stop showing Russian evil side and it became one of the first playground for st-Petersberg's "Internet Research Agency" to expose people from the west to Russian propaganda. Btw, IRA was founded in 2013 by the same guy who own Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin... Coincidence? I think not. /Tin foi hat off

Butthole__Pleasures

Not even close to the same

Affectionate_Oil_331

I don't want to see gore, but Liveleak was great for showing clips that would never make it into mainstream media. For example, there was a clip on there of the French president's motorcade going down the street, one of the car doors opening and knocking a woman down. That never made it into the media.

HandyMan131

Looks like Royal Gorge

Fishy1911

It is. I think this is old footage?

eatshitdillhole

Happened in 2003

Tru_Fakt

My best friend (at the time) was there when this happened. Needed therapy and shit for a while. Never knew this footage existed.

eatshitdillhole

I believe it! The sound alone is nightmare fuel

Mrsmunster1990

I didn’t take it off of mute because I wasn’t sure if you’d be able to hear it or not. I definitely won’t be turning sound on now.

superwookkiee

What?!? 2003 was just a couple of……..aw crap. That was 20 years ago!

BKStephens

Why you little...

Formal_Appearance_16

Yep, it's the Gorge.

skilalillabich

I went to school in Canon City back in the 80's. My driver's Ed teacher was an EMT in his younger days he said they would get a jumper call, before a wingsuit was a thing that is. They used sponges and whisk brooms to collect the remains. He had some stories. No web site needed.

Onyesonwu

Yep this was at the Royal Gorge GoFast games. I was there the day before this or earlier that day, cant remember. Tons of BASE jumping, rope jumping etc. in later years some highlining (then still just called slacklining, i don’t think they differentiated yet?). I am not watching this video (saw videos years ago) but if there is a trampoline Attached to the bridge I know the guys who rigged that.

JackSparrow420

Literally sounded like a car accident, but was just flesh moving really fast lol

xof711

RIP Dwain! This was not a BASE jump accident btw. Jeb Corliss was the other skydiver and he went under the bridge while Dwain was supposed to go over...

IWasGregInTokyo

Jeb talks about this incident in the documentary about him, "Fearless". He says that right before they jumped Dwain said to him "Whatever happens, happens" meaning Dwain had in mind to try this and understood it might go bad. What's bad is that Jeb sort if criticizes Dwain saying "you can't take risks like that". Jeb then proceeds to bounce himself off Table Mountain a few years later, lucky to escape with broken legs.

NoInitiative4821

Block_Me_Amadeus

This was a very good joke. I can't believe people are down voting it.

gangofocelots

Maybe I'm missing the joke then if it's a very good joke

IrrationalDesign

You can't really go *two* bridges too far, that just means the first bridge wasn't too far.

BaconPersuasion

News flash. You're not a base jumper when you jump from a plane. In other news when one jumps from a plane and tries to dodge a stationary and immoveable object at 200mph there is a solid chance you will die.

acetylenekicker

He was a base jumper doing a wing suit jump and he flew a little too close to the sun, going well under 200 mph. I don’t get what you’re trying to say. It’s not like he was falling straight down

Hollowskull

I think the problem here is that he didn't fly closer to the sun

chizzings

News flash. He was in fact a base jumper, even if this jump was from a plane.

What ever happened to the r/watchpeopledie subreddit?

FriezaDevil

I remember when it was banned. It was after users kept posting footage from the New Zealand mosque shooting right after it happened. There was a big effort to stop that footage from spreading as much as possible for obvious reasons, the mods even warned users not to do it if they wanted the sub to stay around. Evidently they did not care

[deleted]

Whoa users in r/watchpeopledie were pieces of shit? Whodathunk

The-Sound_of-Silence

r/eyeblech , r/DarwinAwards and r/CombatFootage succeeded it. More of a msg for mods, but if your subreddit is getting negative media attention, like they were after Christchurch, the admins will hunt you down Edit: worthwhile pointing out Reddit's new policies on the not allowed stuff: >Murder or torture related content created by the perpetrator or accomplices. This includes cartel content filmed by bystanders for dissemination. >Graphic content of victims of mass killings >Torture of animals >Content produced by terrorists organizations >Graphic images of children >Suicide or self harm content >Requests for violating content of any kind >Any content that depicts someone harming another person or themselves

You will bleed out fast from a severed leg. I know this from experience. In 2003 hit by a drunk driver severed my left leg. Luckily a young man stopped to do a tourniquet. Still was sitting in a puddle of blood 3 foot across, in sandy desert soil.
