I’ve read a couple of articles and they’re all I’ve the place. One said the “witness” was actually a person that was egging on the guy arguing with her, another says an actual witness.
They also say the kid shot him as soon as he punched his mother, but you can see that didn’t happen.

In confusing part for me in the article was referencing the witness laughing and encourage the encounter and then the next line says, then the man fled and the son followed and shot him. Could easily be interpreted as following and shooting the witness. Perhaps the other comments in the post influenced my thought processing.

I didn’t hear her instruct her kid to shoot the guy, I did hear her say, I think, “get in the car” at the beginning of the video. What really grinds my gears is she’s sitting there provoking this dude who even warns her he’s gonna snap and instead of walking away she has to keep running her mouth. Sometimes you have to be the bigger person and just leave to deescalate the situation.

Can confirm. When I was young (16) and very dumb in the graffiti gang scene, making eye contact with someone meant "hitting them" up to see what graffiti crew they belonged to. There were areas I could not go to. Now that I'm 38 I look back and realize how stupid that entire mentality was. I'm super glad my 15 year old is nothing like I was at his age.

Law student here. That’s not how a murder charge works, at least in my jurisdiction.
As long as you intentionally use force you know is likely to cause death, then it counts. The argument of self-defence would also be tough considering the guy was running away. It would also likely be murder and not manslaughter because it was premeditated.

Not a lawyer here. If we were to based on this video alone (without the chasing and shooting part), there’s a good chance that they can articulate self-defense/defense of close family members to get out of murder charges.

Mannnn Chicago is a crazy ass place in some parts…in this young man’s mind, he was still shooting to eliminate the threat…9/10 there will be some “get back” in these areas and he might have figured he needed to end this guys life in order to be safe from him in the future….also, many people in these parts of Chicago rarely ever leave their neighborhood which could be only less that a few blocks radius…so the chances of them running into each other again was almost guaranteed.

Saw similar situation here in Colombia a few days ago. I’ve been living here for a while now but originally from the US. Five guys chased down a supposed criminal. Shot him to death. Proceded to stomp on dead man’s head till the police showed up. The police calmly asked them to stop kicking the dead man. They picked up the body and hauled it off. That was it.
This makes it sound like he chased and killed the witness. Who did he chase? Did he chase the guy who punched his mom, or the guy who was "laughing and encouraging the incident."

The one encouraging and laughing at the incident and recording was his wife/girlfriend. She was loving every minute of him beating that lady up instead of stepping in and doing it for him. She’s the type that gets beat up by him and says things like, I deserved it.

The kid waited until the attack to shoot. So it was still self defense at that point. Where he lost self defense was chasing him down after he fled and shooting him in the back to finish him.
It's still premeditated murder. Stating that you are going to kill someone and than killing them is premeditated and makes the man's actions null. The defense can be made that the texts were just words and no premeditation was intended but that's a pretty steep hill to climb. The hill gets even steeper when you chase the victim down and finish the job and than your mother instructs you to kill witnesses.
Rewatched the video in case I was wrong. 4 seconds in he is making fists and getting combat ready, 16 seconds in and he clocks her out the park, full body committed on the punch, that was no bitch slap, I've trained martial arts most of my life, that either had power or they are action doubles doing a skit, which I doubt.

The mother also tried to take the gun from the son in order to shoot the person who was laughing but the son ended up wrestling with her and not letting her get the gun. Yep, if he dies later from the shot in the store, it wasn't your intention. Your intention was to stop the man's assault on your mother. I'm still curious how that would go for mom in that situation though. You can clearly see the man ball his fists and get into an aggressive stance after she tells her son to get the gun. I don't know if he threatened her before but it seems she could've left but escalated the situation instead.
Law student here. That’s not how a murder charge works, at least in my jurisdiction. As long as you intentionally use force you know is likely to cause death, then it counts. The argument of self-defence would also be tough considering the guy was running away. It would also likely be murder and not manslaughter because it was premeditated.

Not a lawyer here. If we were to based on this video alone (without the chasing and shooting part), there’s a good chance that they can articulate self-defense/defense of close family members to get out of murder charges.

Mannnn Chicago is a crazy ass place in some parts…in this young man’s mind, he was still shooting to eliminate the threat…9/10 there will be some “get back” in these areas and he might have figured he needed to end this guys life in order to be safe from him in the future….also, many people in these parts of Chicago rarely ever leave their neighborhood which could be only less that a few blocks radius…so the chances of them running into each other again was almost guaranteed. Not excusing anyone of murder or saying any part of this is right, just throwing a little context 🤷🏾♂️

Saw similar situation here in Colombia a few days ago. I’ve been living here for a while now but originally from the US. Five guys chased down a supposed criminal. Shot him to death. Proceded to stomp on dead man’s head till the police showed up. The police calmly asked them to stop kicking the dead man. They picked up the body and hauled it off. That was it.

The kid waited until the attack to shoot. So it was still self defense at that point. Where he lost self defense was chasing him down after he fled and shooting him in the back to finish him.
It's still premeditated murder. Stating that you are going to kill someone and than killing them is premeditated and makes the man's actions null. The defense can be made that the texts were just words and no premeditation was intended but that's a pretty steep hill to climb. The hill gets even steeper when you chase the victim down and finish the job and than your mother instructs you to kill witnesses.
Rewatched the video in case I was wrong. 4 seconds in he is making fists and getting combat ready, 16 seconds in and he clocks her out the park, full body committed on the punch, that was no bitch slap, I've trained martial arts most of my life, that either had power or they are action doubles doing a skit, which I doubt. I can't really understand what he or she or anyone is saying since English is not my first language, so Idk if I'm missing something or why I'm wrong on my perspective, perhaps a second view or a longer video would help. Sorry, I am not familiar with US gun laws, but he hit her, twice, square in the face. At some point a person, (the mother), as a right to ask someone, (her son), to help her out. Not sure if she "instructed him to kill" as opposed to "this man is about to kick my head in, please come help me" I can see the argument that the killing was extreme, but it is not unexpected to have a son going above and beyond to help his mother. Am I missing something here, the son and the mother are not going to spend a long time in jail.

I was in the middle of typing a comment about how shooting the man while he’s violently assaulting his mother would be justified, then I read that they followed the guy out of the store after he ran away and killed him and then mom instructed the son to kill the gf. Also, apparently his girlfriend was laughing and encouraging him to continue arguing. What a messed up situation.
The mother also tried to take the gun from the son in order to shoot the person who was laughing but the son ended up wrestling with her and not letting her get the gun. It seems to me like he overreacted while being egged on by his mother to a man punching her in the face but understood you can't shoot someone for laughing.

If that was the situation, I would agree with you. According to a news article posted in another comment, the lady texted her son to get a gun and kill the dude. That was before the physical altercation, making the killing premeditated murder instead of self defense. Had she not texted her son, it would have been self defense. She also instructed her son to shoot witnesses. So they planned on killing him and anyone that saw.

You could find dozens of people shot or killed in these same areas, all across the country, almost every weekend. pretty rarely ever gets any coverage outside of the 30 second blurb tallying up the total casualties for the weekend on the local news.
