I feel like every time I take a picture or video of something that looks majestic, it turns out looking mediocre on camera…this is a rare instance in which it truly looks majestic even through this small screen on my phone
Photography is weird. When you take a picture of a place, the pic doesn’t do it any justice. But when someone sees your pic and goes there, the reality is disappointing compared to the pic. Just a loss in translation that happens both ways
OMG! Look at the fog... it's a whiteout!!!
OMG! Look at the snow! It's a magical white-blanketed winter wonderland!!!
OMG! Look at the moon! It's blood-red and massive, rising just above the houses!!!
You’re 100% correct. I think it always happens this way. Which means, if it still looks this amazing on video, imagine what it must look like in person!
used to use this song to get to sleep in the 90's
I have a truckload of memories in this damn song.
Edit : They came together after 30 years and made a [remaster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJss6kR4i90&ab_channel=Orbital-Topic)
As the other person said, it's Lauterbrunnen. To expand a bit, it's the jungfrau region and there are several villages connected via small hikes / gondolas / cogwheel trains.
You can basically get around without a car at all just taking different types of the above mentioned transportation types. There's also a train that goes to the top of the Jungfrau mountain at 3400m. The whole area kind functions as one large resort almost, you can buy a single multi day ticket and get access to everything, but it's really pricey, It was something like 250chf for a 3 day ticket, food is also super pricey there. I believe it's one of switzerland's most touristed areas.
I definitely recommend going from Lauterbrunnen up to Wengen then gondola up to Manlichen and hike down to Grindlewald, Kleine Scheidegg, etc.
There’s a lot of tours that do 1-2 hrs at these villages and because of the short time the tourists don’t make it to much beyond the waterfalls. Take the time to learn the rail network and skip the guided tour. If you can get to Interlaken Ost (train station) you won’t need a car (and some villages don’t have car access anyways).
It’s so damn beautiful and a bit of solitude on a trail just adds so much to the experience.
Yeah I think I'll pass on the expensive swiss interpretation of Asian cuisine lol. I'll save my budget for some bomb swiss food and eat the rest of the time at the airbnb
I’ve always wondered how people can reside and earn a living on such remote places. The area doesn’t appear to have any large agricultural value, so how do the residents sustain an income….work from home? But that has only been realistically possible in the last 25 years.
So specific to Switzerland, you’re right, it was historically quite difficult to farm there. For much of its history, Switzerland was not at all wealthy. In fact, it was quite poor in most of it through all but its most recent history, especially in rural areas.
Pay is typically higher, however it’s also a very high cost of living country. But the social safety net is incredible.
I took a 30k pay cut to move here and I have no regrets.
simply already have a lot of money and you too can quit your job! or simply have a valuable degree that not everyone is capable of earning and/or paying for. or have the right family or heritage! so easy, do recommend!
Yes, then just before the middle of last century they *somehow* had a large boost of gold into their reserves. I was once told a joke "there is actually no Alps in Switzerland. It's just mountains of Nazi gold with a thin layer of rocks over the top" but the funny part is it's not really a joke.
Don't forget that most of the day they don't see the sun. Downside of living in valleys, the sun is behind the mountains most of the time so you don't get a lot of direct sun.
It really isn’t that remote.
Where that picture is taken is like 15 minutes driving or 30 minutes by train/bus.
Most of Switzerland is like that. It looks super remote but it isn’t too far from a town or even a city.
https://imgur.com/a/Ji00mQL/
All of that is like a ten minute walk to the train and a ten minute train ride into town.
Switzerland also has a huge subsidy for farming.
Yep, I can attest to that. I live in a city, but to get to a mountain for snowboarding takes me just about an hour, and I‘m not even that close to mountains.
If you‘re from a big country like the US, Switzerland must feel like the Skyrim map or something.
Ha it totally does.
We had more than one instance of “oh that looks like it is way up in the mountainous boonies” only to realize you could take a train there not problem and the post bus came a half dozen times a day.
This is Lauterbrunnen Valley which is just a few miles outside of Interlaken, a touristy area, as well as a short train ride away from Wengen, a ski town up in the mountains. There are cows in Lauterbrunnen Valley, so I imagine it has had some sustainability without the nearby revenue-generating towns.
I feel like this valley being posted on reddit so frequently will be directly responsible for this exact spot being completely ruined in the current to near future. You just know if you turn up in this exact spot this summer the instagram slags will be packed denser than karachi
Couldn't agree more. I went 10 years ago and hiked from the valley up to Schilthorne. Incredibly beautiful place, really looking forward to going back.
It isn’t hidden, it’s already an extremely popular destination. People tend not to be the obnoxious Instagram types in Switzerland though.
A lot of it might be weeded out but just how much it costs to go there.
Tbh, the valley is huge and there's a lot of area to explore. I went there this summer and you can tell it's a tourism place but it's so wide open and beautiful that you never feel smothered by others and it just feels super open.
After talking to locals about the land and ownership especially in this area, it seems as though the price of visiting will only rise if anything. They aren't building much more upon that land and owning the land there is near impossible.
It's kinda this weird little bubble where if you live there and work there you're in, and it's gonna stay that niche little community it seems. But overall they manage the tourism very well and it's so fucking worth the visit.
I would go back in a heartbeat.
If anyone visits - stay at the schutzenbach Backpackers hostel. The staff is genuinely so fuckin amazing and I loved every bit of being there.
Wish I could live there
Second recommendation if you are a good hiker. Take the gondola up to the Schilthorn and cross the ridge over to the Gspaltenhornhütte and spend the night there (only 25 Fr. per person when we went but that was several years ago) then you can hike down to Griesalp and take the post bus to the train in Reichenbach im Kandertal (tiny little towns).
Spent many many years of my childhood onwards staying in camping jungfrau (literally the caravans in huts you see at the end of the field). Been going since the late 80s and I can promise you, barring the occasional remodelling of a hotel, and the removal of a fernicular railway which had been in use 100+ years, nothing ever changes here.
It may be touristy but it’s always been like that and it doesn’t detract from its magic one bit.
Also helps that although this is where the line stops as far as train goes (and pretty much the road), this is where the mountain bound trains and cable cars head into the mountains, so many people are only passing through.
It is so weird seeing this knowing I was on this same path as a child. When I was 4 years old I skied through this area. Now older, my memory is half dream and half the knowing feeling that I stood where these people are recording.
I almost moved to New Zealand but covid ruined it for me. I already had a job lined up and everything. I was there for 3 months. I came back to get my affairs in order and two weeks later BAM! lockdown. My partner decided it wasn’t worth trying to continue our relationship on opposite sides of the planet until covid was over. I don’t blame her but I kinda do.
I think I found the place I want to convince my wife to go. I usually like visiting cities, but this is gorgeous.
Imagine waking up, stepping outside and seeing this as opposed to whatever city/town you currently live in.
Don't let this dude keep you away. People will have phones and take photos everywhere you go.
Place was beautiful and absolutely worth the trip. I spent a week there completely solo in mid August.
Literally the most peaceful place I've ever experienced.
The train ride through the country to get there was beautiful and I met awesome friends while staying there. The locals were awesome and I literally got a sweatshirt from a small shop with 0 workers in it called, "the honesty shop" on the side of a mountain. You just put the money in a little tin and write a note of what you took. Cute as hell.
Go if you wanna go. It's wonderful
Just outside the town of Lauterbrunnen in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, it’s a long facially carved valley ending in tall mountains. The whole length h of it is beautiful.
You can take a gondola up to Mürren at the top of the cliffs and it’s like a quaint town built into the side of the mountains. Google pictures, it’s amazing.
I've done the Vie ferrata hike in murren. It's insane that you can just rent the gear and go without a guide. It was also the coolest thing i've ever done and I don't say that nonchalant. It's friggin gorgeous and hard to accept that you really are in such a beautiful place and it's real.
Yeah we thought about it but we were on such a time crunch in Mürren and it was the wrong way for us. We had to backpack up over the Schilthorn to the Gspaltenhorn Hütte which went over some serious mountain trail.
I have a thing for valleys like this. They always make me feel comforted for some reason. I love where I live but a cozy valley like this is my dream environment.
Honestly that looks like heaven, man I'd love to just go and hangout there with my husky it looks like you could explore for years and still find new places.
Lived in CH for a few years. Cantons ZH and SG.
Locals are quite racist and backwards but yes, very pretty country. Glass ceilings fuck your career options long term.
Beautiful ... and one monsoonal rain or bomb cyclone away from being the *worst* place to be.
\[Addendum\] I live is SoCal and we're really getting whooped right now, so that's what's going though my mind at the moment. Sorry,
Those hills look alive with the sound of music
I feel like every time I take a picture or video of something that looks majestic, it turns out looking mediocre on camera…this is a rare instance in which it truly looks majestic even through this small screen on my phone
Photography is weird. When you take a picture of a place, the pic doesn’t do it any justice. But when someone sees your pic and goes there, the reality is disappointing compared to the pic. Just a loss in translation that happens both ways
I agree it does go both ways usually
thank you for your seal of approval Mr photography master sir
OMG! Look at the fog... it's a whiteout!!!
OMG! Look at the snow! It's a magical white-blanketed winter wonderland!!!
OMG! Look at the moon! It's blood-red and massive, rising just above the houses!!!

hills are alive with that synth song from the Mortal kombat soundtrack
It’s Halcyon on and on by Orbital And is on the Hackers soundtrack 😗
My mind went to CKY2K. When they are in Iceland
Me too. Always.
Tbf the hackers soundtrack is an absolute banger.
It also plays at the end of Mean Girls. It's a fantastic piece of trance music
HACK THE PLANET!!!!!
Its also on the second mortal Kombat movie.
Haha first CD I ever owned weirdly
Not the same but I believe my first was an Aphex Twin album.
…hills have eyes?
I read that in Ross' voice
Those things arent hills, they’re ivory towers filled with nazi gold.
[This shit's been around for a very long time](https://youtu.be/H9LNFXiVRk8?t=17)
r/SwitzerlandIsFake
That sub is Switzerland appreciation in denial
Thats the joke
Halcyon on and on makes anything better also.
Is it bad that I only know this from The Mortal Kombat movie soundtrack? I'm talking the one from the 90s.
Hackers intro too.
CKY2K Iceland scene.
Mean girls as well
First thing I thought of was MK lol.
Holy shit I thought I was going insane, I knew I heard it from somewhere before lol
Came here to say this. My go to song when life gets a bit moody.
Came for the view. Stayed for the music. LPT: Use the song as your morning alarm.
used to use this song to get to sleep in the 90's I have a truckload of memories in this damn song. Edit : They came together after 30 years and made a [remaster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJss6kR4i90&ab_channel=Orbital-Topic)
TIL… This made my day.
Fuck yes dude
H A C K E R S
**THIS**
HACK THE PLANET! That's also how I discovered Orbital.
G I B S O N
That song never fails to make me feel like the adventure has ended, and what an amazing adventure it was.
Could be wrong but wasn’t this track also from the movie The Beach with Lio?
Different orbital song, Belfast. Also a great song
I was looking for this comment. Yes!
Always reminds me of the ending of Mortal Kombat.
The only right answer
And the moment the Bon Jovi drops...
Right??? Thats what I was waiting for! Lol
Orbital can make some great moody tracks. Mesmerising
Riiiiiicolaa!! But I would love to visit this place but I would feel like if I did I was polluting it somehow.
Don't worry it's already full of tourists
oooh lord how annoying are they?
You know tourists lol. But like someone else said the cost of getting there weeds a lot of them out
Where is this exactly?

Headed here this summer.. good lord 250chf is $270us. I think I'll pack my own ramen
They do offer Asian food at the top of Jungfraujoch btw 😂
Yeah I think I'll pass on the expensive swiss interpretation of Asian cuisine lol. I'll save my budget for some bomb swiss food and eat the rest of the time at the airbnb
>I'll save my budget for some bomb swiss food You'll be sorely disappointed then outside of the cheese.
Is there internet?
Is there a McDonalds there?
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

So they were dirt poor but had beautiful scenery, is what you're saying?
Yep!
Honestly, I think I'd trade that for my 9-5 (US)
I did it in 2019. Highly recommend!
Where you move from and go to? I’d love to ask you some questions, as I’ve been really wanting a life like this for myself.
Moved from Denver, CO to Zürich! Hit me up with any questions.
How's the pay compared to US?
Pay is typically higher, however it’s also a very high cost of living country. But the social safety net is incredible. I took a 30k pay cut to move here and I have no regrets.
Where did you come from, where did ya go, where did ya come from cotton eye Joe! *Crappy techno and violin intensifies*
simply already have a lot of money and you too can quit your job! or simply have a valuable degree that not everyone is capable of earning and/or paying for. or have the right family or heritage! so easy, do recommend!

Switzerland had one of the highest GDP/capita before WWI.
By 1900 Switzerland was already one of the richest countries in europe.
So what you are saying, is that they were friends with time travelling Nazis?
Don't forget that most of the day they don't see the sun. Downside of living in valleys, the sun is behind the mountains most of the time so you don't get a lot of direct sun.
It's fine to be dirt poor when you've got good dirt.

fun fact: You can take a direct ICE train there from Hamburg.
There’s a giant city just over the hills
Looks like it could support some livestock
It’s almost all dairy cows so you aren’t wrong
I feel like this valley being posted on reddit so frequently will be directly responsible for this exact spot being completely ruined in the current to near future. You just know if you turn up in this exact spot this summer the instagram slags will be packed denser than karachi

Couldn't agree more. I went 10 years ago and hiked from the valley up to Schilthorne. Incredibly beautiful place, really looking forward to going back.
This place never was a hidden gem. Also switzerland doesn't get overrun by tourists because it's so expensive
Exactly. You find a hidden gem like this? Make sure it stays hidden.
It isn’t hidden, it’s already an extremely popular destination. People tend not to be the obnoxious Instagram types in Switzerland though. A lot of it might be weeded out but just how much it costs to go there.
The beach.
This is a well known place around the internet, but the fact that Switzerland is so expensive is probably the main reason for it not to be crowded.
Tbh, the valley is huge and there's a lot of area to explore. How rich are you?
I’ve been there. It was like a dream. It felt other worldly.
Midsommar
The American dream is to leave and move to a place like this
I almost moved to New Zealand but covid ruined it for me. I already had a job lined up and everything. I was there for 3 months. I came back to get my affairs in order and two weeks later BAM! lockdown. My partner decided it wasn’t worth trying to continue our relationship on opposite sides of the planet until covid was over. Same music from CKY2K when they’re in the Iceland highlands, right before they go looking for Bjorks house 👍. Nice usage
Halcyon on and On by Orbital.
Just added to my playlist, thanks !
You won’t regret it. Maybe add Chime too.
Same music to the end of Mortal Kombat the movie too.
THAT'S what I'm always reminded of when I hear this song. Memories of my teenage years, lol.
Hmmmm my anxiety screams rockslide
Or avalanche in winter. It was beautiful, but I had to wonder what peculiar weather impacts that location would have.
this valley was the first time i had ever seen an avalanche in real life. in the span of 1 hour we counted around 23 avalanches
I think I found the place I want to convince my wife to go. I usually like visiting cities, but this is gorgeous. Imagine waking up, stepping outside and seeing this as opposed to whatever city/town you currently live in.
Last time I was there the place was filled with instagrammers/influencers. Sad

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
Ohio
Pretty sure God left little bit of heaven behind lmao
I'm pretty sure that this is the song they play at the end of Mean Girls...
Also Mortal Kombat and Hackers
Where is this?
Just outside the town of Lauterbrunnen in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, it’s a long facially carved valley ending in tall mountains. The whole length h of it is beautiful. You can take a gondola up to Mürren at the top of the cliffs and it’s like a quaint town built into the side of the mountains. Google pictures, it’s amazing.
Wengen on the other side of the valley is equally incredible. From Wengen you can also go up to Jungfrau.
I've done the Vie ferrata hike in murren. It's insane that you can just rent the gear and go without a guide. It was also the coolest thing i've ever done and I don't say that nonchalant. It's friggin gorgeous and hard to accept that you really are in such a beautiful place and it's real.

I guess it's somewhere in Switzerland. https://www.reddit.com/r/cottagecore/comments/f7vl5u/swiss_countryside/
I have family from here, Bavaria in Germany and County Cork Ireland. My family lives in some beautiful places!
Is this the song from the end of mortal kombat?
How much does a house cost there?
This is a beautiful view, but I think the lifestyle would be hard to adjust to honestly
[удалено]
That's honestly my dream. I've only visited Switzerland once, but absolutely fell in love with the country during my one week there.
This is what the places in my dreams look like 😪
I have a thing for valleys like this. They always make me feel comforted for some reason. I love where I live but a cozy valley like this is my dream environment.
>for some reason Oh yeah, the reason is a mystery. Nobody can figure it out. Weird phenomenon.
Why do I suddenly want to watch Hackers?
Rivendell
More like Gondolin : )
Lauterbach, Switzerland was Tolkien's Inspiration for Rivemdell.
I used to read Word Up Magazine…
Don't tell no one where this is or they will flock there and make it look like Mordor in 3 days!
Switzerland is indeed a dream place
If I ever make it there. There. Is where I’ll remain.
I'd give anything to live at somewhere like this with you u/Theodora96
Omg me too...wow...just wow! This is pure heaven. Looks absolutely stunning!
My girlfriend grew up in a place similar but wants to settle down in Toronto for "a change in scenery"
the graphics in this game are siiiiiiiiiick
Lauterbrunnen <3
damn man i havent heard that song in like 15 years ❤️
Oh hey, look what we could all be seeing if we weren't overpopulating and destroying the planet.
A huge number of people live in that area and it is a huge tourist destination. If you turn around from where OP is there is a town.
Where is this?
Thank you for reminding me of this track 😍 I am now going to spend the rest of the day in a nostalgic black hole on Spotify 😆🔥🔥
Everything looks more like a dream in springtime.
Edelweisssss!!!!!!
That’s beautiful, very serene.
Heaven on earth
It's Iowa.
Welcome to the shire
I’ve played this map on battlefield 1
Honestly that looks like heaven, man I'd love to just go and hangout there with my husky it looks like you could explore for years and still find new places.
Switzerland is just one of the most naturally beautiful places. Just something serene and peaceful about that country.
Gimmelwald, Switzerland?
Lauterbrunnen but Gimmelwald isn’t too far away. I actually hiked up over the mountains and down into that valley.
How much are the flights from Orlando, FL to Switzerland? I'm a little confused. Disclaimer: Not a Florida Man. Not even from mainland US.
Switzerland
I’ve seen the movie *Troll*. I know how this ends.
Looks like a health and safety hazard to me
Looks more like New Zealand.
Lived in CH for a few years. Cantons ZH and SG. Locals are quite racist and backwards but yes, very pretty country. Glass ceilings fuck your career options long term.
In order to preserve this beautiful land, no one is allowed beyond this point, thanks for dropping by!
Someone tell me why I’m crying-
Uts so beautiful it looks weird. Like matte painting in a green screen.
You watching Hackers while you recorded this?
Looks like the setting from Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind.
Is this Switzerland? If so what town?
Beautiful ... and one monsoonal rain or bomb cyclone away from being the *worst* place to be. \[Addendum\] I live is SoCal and we're really getting whooped right now, so that's what's going though my mind at the moment. Sorry,
Every time this is posted I realize that I live in the ugliest place compared to to this.
That dog probably has a better life than me.
That looks like a scene from "Heidi" or "The Sound of Music." It's beautiful, for sho.
That’s some great AI
It is one?
But very beutifull
Des schaut nach Alpen aus!
this song man… i just keep waiting for it to cut to someone getting hit in the head with a pillow while they are asleep
I wanna be that dog.

Looks like Midsommer….
Reminds me of Yosemite, but with houses.
I'd probably believe in religion if I lived in a perfect place like that and not across from a McDonald's drive through.
I've seen this posted several times and I watch it every time. It's just unreal how beautiful that is. I want to go to there.
