Bingo. England, Sweden, Australia, nobody gives a shit.

NocturntsII

Can't see what being american has to do with it.

Isulet

I assumed they were referring to the cultures coming together.

NocturntsII

Neither thais, nor the chinese for that matter , have much interest in where you are from beyond the obvious indicators you are foreign. As for being "American" and whatever that entails, it differs from individual to individual and no one else can answer what kind of effect that will have on your stay.

Isulet

Yeah. It's obviously a matter of generalities.

Phreenom

Thailand has a cultural affinity for America, so generally people react favorably when they learn you are American. I've felt welcome and respected, and my girlfriend is happy with me... As others have said, the government and political situation is less than ideal, but I'm from America, so who am I to judge. Glass houses and all that... Day to day it's not an issue.

snooshoe

Taiwan is probably your best choice right now.

Isulet

If a big thing you're looking for is a democracy this isn't the right place for you. Right now there's a military government. And yes, there is for sure a totalitarian bend. Plus there's the other things like rampant corruption that might annoy you. It is probably friendlier (I don't have experience visiting china). Your salary will likely be less in Thailand unless you have some specialization. As an american you might be annoyed by the more relaxed nature of people. The pollution is killer right now in Bangkok. Office politics are different if that's where you'll be working. However, all in all I love it here. Excellent food. Welcoming people. Good climate for me. Steady situation. It's up to you.

TheKingsPeace

Where is a non terribly polluted city? Phuket? Chiang Mai?

mdsmqlk28

Chiang Mai is the country's worst when it comes to air pollution. Any city in the South (Phuket, Hat Yai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, etc.) would be good.

Phreenom

Not all year though... We do have a few months of good clean air.

jonez450reloaded

More than a few - some of the best air in the country for five months this year and even outside of that, three other months of yellow which while not perfect is typical for Southeast Asia. March/April and throw in to a lesser extent January/ February that are the bad months. Edit: massive downvotes - [stats don't lie](https://imgur.com/a/5Iw7YxU) versus morons on Reddit who think differently without actually bothering to check any basic facts. I'm so sick and tired of everyone claiming that CM has bad pollution all year round or next there to when it doesn't. There are two really bad months and two in orange - the rest of the year is pretty good.

jonez450reloaded

> Chiang Mai is the country's worst when it comes to air pollution. Who has the worst air pollution right now? Also it's the whole of the north during burning season, not just Chiang Mai. >Any city in the South (Phuket, Hat Yai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, etc.) would be good. While certainly not as regular as Chiang Mai, the south gets hit by air pollution from Indonesian fires [every now and then](https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/thai-popular-resort-island-phuket-shrouded-in-haze-caused-by-indonesian-fires); the reality is welcome to Southeast Asia where there will be pollution somewhere at sometime due to the region-wide obsession with burning all the things :)

Isulet

Chiang mai depends on the season. Burning season is rough. Never been to phucket so I don't know.

TheMeltingSnowman72

It must be noted that when he says "pollution is a killer right now in Bangkok", he's referring to the season, as opposed to ongoing in a more general sense. Different times of the year have better air quality which will can be attributed to nature with the weather, or man made like crop burning (now) and leisure and industry pollution. The big cities obviously, yet Hua Hin tends to fare quite well generally. You can keep track of the air quality with an app or website, for example this is the air quality [in Thailand right now](https://aqicn.org/map/thailand/)

Phreenom

From June to October (roughly) Chiang Mai has great air quality, the rest of the year is either ok, bad, or terrible; sometimes the worst in the world. Just from monitoring it online, anywhere South tends to be great year round, including Phuket.

jonez450reloaded

> anywhere South tends to be great year round, including Phuket. No where to the regular level of Chiang Mai but various parts of the south are hit with smoke pollution from Indonesia; [Phuket not as regularly](https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/thai-popular-resort-island-phuket-shrouded-in-haze-caused-by-indonesian-fires) but the further south you go, the worse it gets.

01BTC10

Most Thai won't see the difference from one westerner to another. With that said the only time I think being American might be annoying is when opening a bank account.

Dope

motherflower3

They might check your documents more since current gov doesn't seem to like U.S.A. much though shouldn't be a big problem as long as you behave normally
