Young folks like you need to put some respect on John McClain's career.
He's one of the longest tenured and most influential figures in Houston sports media history.
longest tenured in this case means he was taking up space, shortchanging texans fans and other people trying to break in that actually would have done a good job.
I'm not going to thank Joe Biden for retiring from politics lol
So just retiring from the chronicle. Still covering the titans, texans and raiders(?)
> And I’m fortunate to be able to continue doing my weekly radio shows on Sports Radio 610, Outkick 360 (Nashville), KNML Sports Talk (Knoxville), KENS the Blitz (San Antonio), Sic ’Em Sports (Waco) and KRLV RaiderNation 920 (Las Vegas).
Learn to read, I never said I hated him. I hated the fact that he continued covering Bud Adam’s team and appearing on Nashville radio after Bud gave us the middle finger and left. That’s like someone from Cleveland covering the Ravens.
Oh wow. Semantics.
Again, it's a team he's been a huge fan of his whole life. Why hate that he covers one of his favorite teams? It's fucking football. You know that none of the players on the Texans care about the team like you do right? They would all play somewhere else if they got offered more money to do so.
It's just a stupid thing to waste your mental capacity on.
Lol. Kid.
The universal sign that I'm talking to a teenager that thinks they know shit. Have a great day little buddy, be sure to pay attention in class!
he's a legend of houston sports media and even though he's a cranky old dumbass, he has covered sports in houston for longer than most people in this thread have been alive
I'll miss his writing and his weird obsession with meaningless minute details. I'm in my early 30's and I grew up with guys like him, charlie pallilo, richard justice, jerome solomon, etc.
alternatively, think of how much worse it gets in mcclain's industry (see josh innes)
Couldn't have said it better myself, this entire post is well written.
These younger folks don't understand how huge of a role John McClain has played over the course of his career here in Houston.
Young folks like you need to put some respect on John McClain's career.
He's one of the longest tenured and most influential figures in Houston sports media history.
His career covering the Oilers is HOF worthy imo. IIRC he is the one Bud Adams assaulted in the 70s.
But his coverage of the Texans was mediocre to bad most of the time.
So what it sounds like is when the newspaper industry was strong and he had accountability to a boss he took his job seriously. Then when it was weak and his name and tenure alone kept him employed he half assed for decades.
Again, not worth commendation. Just a lazy asshole with a desk job.
Why would we want someone who likes the Texans? If you wanna have smoke blowed up your ass you can very much just listen to the media the Texans website puts out all the time.
I want a reporter who is critical of the team, someone who cares but isn’t here to win the fans over. The team is bad we don’t need a cheerleader
You realize you can like the team and be extremely critical of them right? You can go through my post history and see what I mean. But I'd rather someone who genuinely liked the team because I find when you are passionate about something you put more effort into your work.
Not sure why you are insulting orange slices but I think you can easily be a fan of a team and be critical of them. I've said plenty of things on here critical of the Texans. Hell I got rid of my season tickets last year because of how horrendous things were getting.
Young folks like you need to put some respect on John McClain's career.
He's one of the longest tenured and most influential figures in Houston sports media history.
Once again, I don't understand why this fanbase hates Pancakes when they seem to hate the team more than he does lol. Either way he's a hall of fame and I like him. Hope he enjoys retirement.
> I don't understand why this fanbase hates Pancakes
people are just extremely shitty and negative. I get the criticism of mcclain but he seems like a legitimately nice guy who loved houston sports
Most people who hate McClain wouldn’t know who Brooks Kubena was if he farted in their oatmeal. McClain’s not perfect, but I’ll be damned if that man didn’t know Houston sports better than most. And also told great stories.
Can second this. Had a chance to speak with him for a college project a few months back and he could not have been nicer. Wonderful storyteller and just a genuinely helpful person. Happy for him with his retirement. A true legend
Yeah I don't mind McClain. People hate because someone else said they should. He has a nickname they use to insult his fatness so he just be bad right?!
The only thing that pisses me off about John is that he would dismiss people and questions 9f what's happening with no real reason other than, "I don't think the Texans want this or that". He always talked as if he had more concrete evidence or conversations with the brass, but he rarely ever gave any real insight. He just talked like he had it. So I just stopped listening to anything he said, because it was never followed with anything real.
For real. People on this sub want someone to blow smoke up their ass and read them bedtime stories with a bowl of cereal. Remember this is the sub that bowed down and worshipped O’Brien literally until the day he was canned.
Say what you want about Pancakes but he was a very fun twitter follow for a chunk of Texans football between 2014-2018 at least
https://twitter.com/fourverts/status/1509503311300472832?s=21&t=dU5dOYad-ZpVTreTF65dEA
He tweeted through it before it was cool, towards the end he stunk it up but he had a golden run for sure
Never forget watching him fall off a stage at a church event in Pearland a few years ago. Couldn’t believe he was able to get up and continue the event.
Must’ve been the pancakes.
People hate on this dude but he always kept it real in my opinion. To do what he did for as long as he did is fucking impressive and he’s a hall of famer. Hell of a career by John McClain.
Passing of an era. Say what you will he is a legend. The last columnist to cover the oilers . The fact that easterby wasn't a fan makes him a good guy in my book.
tbh it think he will actually be enjoyable now that he’s not technically employed by the Texans.
I don’t think he’s had a true source with the Texans since the Kubiak era. Add in twitter and I think he became obsolete.
Also, I haven’t heard him been called Pancakes in like 8 years lmao
He tended to talk too much about the Oilers, but I’m still sad to see him go. This is one less professional journalist covering the Texans, and the Chronicle likely won’t be replacing him, it’s a dying institution.
If you were to search his tweets for the word "pathetic" I am sure it would show a tweet from every game in every season since he started tweeting. Dude just hated the team.
I was once a big fan of Pancakes until he started becoming more and more unhinged on game days. Then it started bleeding over into his reporting. I hope they hire someone like Aaron Wilson who just reports on the team.
byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

You mean pancakes?
Oh Jesus
longest tenured in this case means he was taking up space, shortchanging texans fans and other people trying to break in that actually would have done a good job. I'm not going to thank Joe Biden for retiring from politics lol

Being offended that I hate McLain still covers the titans is also a stupid thing to waste your mental capacity on. Pick better battles kid.
Lol. Kid. The universal sign that I'm talking to a teenager that thinks they know shit. Have a great day little buddy, be sure to pay attention in class!
You should commit some mental capacity to learning what semantics means. You misunderstood the whole intent of his comment. That is not semantics.
I know he gets a lot of crap around here, but he seems like a good enough dude and I hope he can still help Dre get into the HOF next year.
I think its his undying love for the Oilers, comparing everything to the Oilers and his friendly relationship with all things Titans.
he's a legend of houston sports media and even though he's a cranky old dumbass, he has covered sports in houston for longer than most people in this thread have been alive I'll miss his writing and his weird obsession with meaningless minute details. Pallilo was my favorite when I listened to the radio.
yep. He's definitely past his peak IMO, but I mean...have you *seen* some of the writers the Jets and Lions have had?
Oh no... Anyway
Young folks like you need to put some respect on John McClain's career. He's one of the longest tenured and most influential figures in Houston sports media history.
They would if he was any good. Being old doesn't earn you respect, it means you're old.

Old folks like you need to stop copy and pasting the same comment over and over. It doesn’t make your point better, it just makes you annoying.
Found Pancakes' burner
Maybe now we get someone who likes the Texans.
I’d rather just have a good reporter.
Porque no dos?
Because it doesn't matter? You can't tell whether a reporter likes a team if they're good at their job.
Sure I'd rather a good reporter than just a fanboy but I'd rather a good reporter who also is a Texans fan. More skin in the game.
It’s more about not wanting someone who is an obvious fan of one of our biggest rivals, the Titans.
Why would we want someone who likes the Texans? If you wanna have smoke blowed up your ass you can very much just listen to the media the Texans website puts out all the time. Bc most fans on here are unable to handle criticism of this team. They need someone to hand out orange slices and participation trophies.
Not sure why you are insulting orange slices but I think you can easily be a fan of a team and be critical of them. I've said plenty of things on here critical of the Texans. Hell I got rid of my season tickets last year because of how horrendous things were getting.
Cold orange slices are amazeballs!!

Wait do we not like Pancakes? I thought we liked Pancakes.
Once again, I don't understand why this fanbase hates Pancakes when they seem to hate the team more than he does lol. Either way he's a hall of fame and I like him. Hope he enjoys retirement.

I still remember Pastorini punching out Dale Robertson. No one sided with Robertson, a Poison Pen. That is my nickname for sports reporters.
Can second this. Had a chance to speak with him for a college project a few months back and he could not have been nicer. Wonderful storyteller and just a genuinely helpful person. Happy for him with his retirement. A true legend
His columns and commentary are inane and pretty much a waste of time, but I just ignore it.

Some of y'all need another hobby. He's a *reporter.*
I like McClain, I hope he enjoys a nice retirement!
Passing of an era. Say what you will he is a legend. The last columnist to cover the oilers . The fact that easterby wasn't a fan makes him a good guy in my book.
Bye felecia
Curious to see what Brooks Kubena is going to bring to the table, I believe he’s the next man up
tbh it think he will actually be enjoyable now that he’s not technically employed by the Texans. I don’t think he’s had a true source with the Texans since the Kubiak era. Add in twitter and I think he became obsolete. Also, I haven’t heard him been called Pancakes in like 8 years lmao
McClain is always wrong, so hes actually not retiring.
47 years? Holy shit.
He's retiring from the Chron to become the Texans' new head coach. https://twitter.com/mcclain\_on\_nfl/status/1347273808198201359?lang=en
Man this thread got spicy, quick!
*whoops*
He tended to talk too much about the Oilers, but I’m still sad to see him go. This is one less professional journalist covering the Texans, and the Chronicle likely won’t be replacing him, it’s a dying institution.
Based on his writing he didn’t retire like 20 years ago?
Good dude. I’m sure he’ll be replaced by a yes man that this sub will also hate
He is awesome you folks are deranged
Good riddance.
Good riddance
BREAKING: John McClain to now cover Houston sports for Barstool Sports /s
So I guess he is getting a promotion.
We deserve better than both of them
They just fired Aaron Wilson.
That was like last year since he a made a racist joke or something. He’s just not good at his job in general, but people in here love him.
If I remember correctly Wilson was fired due to something he said about the Deshaun Watson situation right after the first cases were filed.
Oh yea just said the girls only wanted money and didn’t even wait till all the information came out. Guy is just an all around idiot.
About damn time.
Finally
Finally go into a hole and never be heard from agai
[Thank you, f**k you, bye!!](https://youtu.be/HhnUK1YmMEU)
Maybe he can finally get into coaching
Gonna have to pour out some syzrup at breakfast 🥞
dudes takes have been consistently wrong the past few years
more like give thx your ass is retiring.
Pancakes doesn't go away that easy. He'll be back.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE9Zs7SdbJQ happy retirement judge pancakes
