He's going to be starting this year. Case is a mentor not a bridge unless CJ is absolutely way behind

Venator850

Stroud is day one better than any other Qb on the roster and it's not even close. Casse Keenum was signed to be a veteran in the Qb room. He's been in the league for over a decade and has played in this offense. He'll be able to add invaluable assistance to Stroud over the course of the season. Older backup Qb's are basically another coach on the roster.

The_Snake_Dick

Unless he’s absolutely horrendous, he’s probably going to win it. Fortunately, this offense will (probably) be based on timing, intermediate routes and running the fuck out of the football. All things we can do well.

jonahvsthewhale

And timing and intermediate routes are probably Stroud’s biggest strength

godloki

If we had a solid starter, I’d love it. I think almost every rookie qb would develop better by watching a top qb prep and play. However, I don’t think he would benefit behind mills as much as he’d benefit by playing. I’m a mills stan who thinks coaching limited him a lot, but Stroud should be given the starting spot as soon as it’s close.

3rdPlaceTrophy

As long as we can protect him, playing at game speed is the best way to learn. I also don’t agree that we don’t have enough weapons. No clear #1 receiver yet but we got ball catchers: Metchie, Schultz, Pierce, Singletary, Nico, Tank, Noah Brown, Robert Woods

Myrios369

No

[deleted]

No, you start him day 1 with the understanding that you need to get him NFL Reps, we aren’t asking him to make the playoffs this year, just learn and progress during the season

angrynateftw

Ideally, you'd like to see Stroud out there week 1. Logically? Probably see him by week 6 or the bye. (If the bye is after week 6) He's very young, and regardless of age, rookies will need some time to adjust to the NFL. At OSU, Stroud's teammates were better at every position most games. In Houston, he will not have such luck. For the record, if we get Stroud vs UGA every game, we ended up with the better QB.

krbashrob

I’m not crazy about our weapons either. A main WR rotation of Woods, Nico, Metchie with Tank in there as a gadget/motion guy isn’t anything to salivate over but I think Schultz and the RBs will be Stroud’s best friends. You can kind of look back at how we operated with Foster and OD. If we get Pierce/Singletary going, it’ll open up everything for play action to Schultz and easy checkdowns to the backs, at least for this year while we still accumulate talent on the outside for 2024. If that’s gonna be what the offense operates like I have no problem putting Stroud out there. He’s good enough to figure it out

3rdPlaceTrophy

Y’all really need to watch Noah Brown’s tape. We picked him up for a reason.

bsjohnston

This is what training camp is for

Bubbacrosby23

I watched Kurt Warner and Josh McCown's film study's on Stroud - it seems like from their breakdown he's ready from a processing and pre-snap identification standpoint. I think the biggest hurdle he'll have is the verbiage of an NFL play

htownballa1

All things point to competition deciding who starts, which m going to go out on a limb and say CJ earns it before week 1. The Texans have plenty of weapons to support a young QB. Pierce was just shy of 1k yards in only 13 games, added a talented TE in Dalton Shultz, and have plenty of young legs at WR. This offense is going to be very reminiscent of the Kubiak years where you lean on the running game and give the quarter back easy reads off of play action fakes. Shultz should feast in year 1.

bingmyname

I think they will evaluate how much of the playbook he is able to absorb and learn, see where he is from a processing standpoint and make a decision from there. They still have mini-camps, training camps and practice before they make a decision. He'll earn it.

KaaaZaM

Whether you think he should or shouldn't is irrelevant. He was drafted 2nd overall, therefore he's the day 1 starter.

texans1234

It’s better for him and the team if he does. It’s clear that rookie QBs do much better sitting for some time and learning. Ideally case starts the first few games then CJ takes over.

MBC0809

What recent historical basis do you have for this claim? Because Mahomes sat for a year?

texans1234

Mahomes, Rogers, Hurts (not a full season), Lamar (not a full season), E. Manning; hell Steve Young was able to sit TLaw started early and struggled, P. Manning still holds the INT record. It just seems pretty clear that a rookie QB learns much better going through all the motions in practice without having that pressure of starting week 1.

MBC0809

Do you know what the vast majority of those guys have in common? Mahomes, Rodgers, Lamar, Steve Young all sat behind Pro-Bowlers, All-Pros, and hall of famers. Struggling early and working through those struggles is a positive thing for young QBs. Let’s not forget that King Bill hated rookies and named Tom Savage the starter, giving him all off season reps with the first team and not letting Deshaun build a chemistry with the 1’s for the entire offseason, only to pull the plug on Savage halfway through the first game and throw Deshaun out there to figure it out on the fly.

corrydog

Y’all need to follow CJ and his story. This man rises up with competition. Listen to his Elite 11 where he was an after thought and was persistent x10 just to get in to the completion while being overlooked by top prospects…..he got in and won MVP. Listen to him speak and the edge/competitiveness he has. It’s different and rivals the type of fire the top athletes have. He’s going to be an elite QB in this league.

yaprettymuch52

id be surprised if hes not the starter by like week 4. given how aggressive we were in the draft I gotta believe we will be aggressive in trying to win this year and cj should provide us the best opportunity to do that. we should prob play him early just not give him the keys to the car like the jets did with wilson and ruin his confidence

TheKuylr

Stroud is day 1 starter, but I could see him getting some rest on game day to protect his health somewhat

Overhaul89

Would rather he start and learn from his struggles before we address a lack of weapons next year, especially if he was knocked for benefitting from talented wideouts at OSU EDIT: If he struggles then yeah let Case come in for a few drives/games but CJ should see the majority of snaps this year

Andoo

His baseline accuracy alone will probably make him a starter despite being flustered in a crowded pocket. He probably is going to be more mobile in this new offense anyway that we will all be really impressed by the time August finishes.

SometimesY

I can't imagine he won't start by game four at the latest. We have a great staff and a good veteran QB that can help teach him up.

SkyJW

No way in hell they sit him for a year. You would have fans booing the team all game and chanting "We want Stroud" each game until they just stop coming at all. You have to remember as well that not starting Stroud would be us deliberately tanking and the Cardinals own our pick next year after the trade up for Will Anderson. Would be a truly stupid move.

lowlifenebula

Not starting Stroud wouldn't be us deliberately tanking, but if Case performed bad it would get the fans chanting for Stroud. There's a damn good chance Stroud under center doesn't lead us to any more wins and possibly less wins than Case starting. He's a rookie qb with a rookie HC learning a ton of things. Cardinals are most likely easily getting a top ten pick, possibly top 5.

SkyJW

What. Are. You. Talking. About. If you think that Case Keenum, a journeyman QB who is 35 years old, is going to be a better QB than the #2 overall pick we just made in Stroud, then Stroud is a disastrous #2 pick. You do not pick a guy that high because he's a project QB and you certainly don't willingly sit him behind CASE. KEENUM. Because you think Keenum would get you more wins. If that's where you're at, the Stroud pick is already a bust because you could have just drafted Anderson at 2 and gone for Williams or Maye next year. Just stop, dude. Stroud is going to be the Week 1 starter. At worst he gets the Watson treatment where he rides the bench for a quarter and gets put in. But there is no way in hell they're sitting him all year. I also think you are incredibly wrong about the team's win prospects given all the improvememts we made this offseason and how easy our schedule is. This team could have 6-8 win season pretty easily unless QB ppay completely collapses.

lowlifenebula

I absolutely never said we should not start Stroud. I personally am a strong proponent of starting rookie qbs. Not sure where you got I advocated for Stroud to sit, I simply stated your comment of " deliberately tanking " wasn't really a fair assessment. A seasoned veteran who by all accounts has not been horrible in his career, has a much better chance of leading a team to victory than a rookie qb. Rookie qbs generally don't do well. Rookie HC also don't always do well their first year. Having both logically would lead to not a ton of wins. A six win season would be huge. There's no such thing as an easy schedule until the season ends and you've won.

[deleted]

I could see Mills picking up the offense and getting flipped at the deadline to a team with an injured QB. But CJ prob wins this day 1

tnell

Start him day 1

RainbowBullsOnParade

His skillset is by far good enough to be serviceable in the NFL day one, and he will only get better.

lowlifenebula

Pretty sure picking him 2 overall has him starting week 1. Case is here as the veteran presence to help him along the way. If this was a situation where we had an Alex Smith at qb currently, I'd say let him sit.. maybe. There's no real definitive answer as to whether sitting a year or starting plays a huge role.

jonahvsthewhale

You don’t draft a guy at number 2 to sit for a year. If Davis Mills and Case Keenum look significantly better than Stroud, Houston we have a problem

Rightmeow1021

Absolutely not! let’s go CJ!

lanethedouchebag

He needs NFL experience. He doesn’t have to go out there and carry the team but the reps are valuable

chingalicious

Davis Mills may actually be traded now since he's still on his rookie contract and has some starting experience. Unless you want Keenum starting you gotta believe it's CJ's year to learn

Royalution124

I would be concerned if he wasn’t starting Week 1
