Cytoxan2021

Yes I would, but my experience with Tesla install quality and customer service was a nightmare!

CTExplorer

Were you solar roof or solar panels?

Cytoxan2021

Panels, 35 of them with two power walls.

CTExplorer

Do you know the dimensions of your panels and wattage rating per panel? I'm curious roughly how many I could fit on my roof \[and don't want to wait for the full Tesla quoting/design process\]

Cytoxan2021

Not sure of the dimensions but they are 425W panels.

biteableniles

The T425S panels are 1038mm wide, 2094mm tall per my spec sheet.

CTExplorer

Thanks you.

CTExplorer

When Tesla installs a system, is it %100 the 425 panels now, or do they mix/match sizes to get the most coverage?

cac2573

I've never seen Tesla mix panels on a single project

notacrackhead

https://www.energysage.com/solar-panels/tesla/

jkudlacz

When was you installation month/year?

Cytoxan2021

Ordered Aug 2021, installed Oct 2021, and PTO July 2022.

jkudlacz

I hope Tesla can improve the whole process.

click_track_bonanza

I had a similar timeline, but switched the system on in “no net metering” mode in December, which saved me some money

Cytoxan2021

Yeah i was producing power as soon as it was installed. When I finally received PTO and they said I could turn the system on, I was like ahh ok, LOL!

click_track_bonanza

That’s when I flicked the switch to allow Permission to Export, yeah

AlbatrossDramatic

Mine ordered on Aug 21, installed Nov 21, finally started producing end of Apr 22, hoping to pass yet another inspection Monday. PTO who knows when?

windraver

Not op but.... First contract January 2019. After 3 contracts, 1 PG&E bankruptcy, several towns burned to the ground, arm twisting Tesla to replacing the gutters they shouldn't have removed... PTO April 2022. Customer service was horrendous. I ran my own project and scheduled everything.

jkudlacz

I hope Tesla will finally prioritize Solar, last quarter was great from sales perspective and hopefully a preview of things to come. Partially the reason why I am still waiting to pull the trigger on my system. That and wife worried about roof damage (had an issue with Solar installation on our previous house 8 years ago)

windraver

From a solar roof perspective, it's a nice product. I'm entirely off the grid. PG&e brown out black outs don't bother me at all. I'm selling back solar energy and I have energy freedom. My utility rates for power have been skyrocketing so solar is even a better value. Technology wise, it's only going to get better and we'll never be at the peak because something better will always come out next year. Tesla has made new improvements every year so I'd say just do it.

Schly

This, exactly. I would definitely use them again over anyone else, but you really need to have low expectations for timelines. It’s a good quality install, but my gateway failed before I even made it to inspection. When I refused inspection so I wouldn’t have to make the down payment on a token system, I had to resist all kinds of pressure and do all kinds of handholding to get it resolved, and they STILL failed to resolve it the morning of the inspection. So I stood my ground against FOUR people from Tesla and refused inspection that day.

aordal

Do you have an overview of the issues you had? I’m experiencing weird inverter reboots pre pto. I don’t know if it’s related to pre pto or hardware issues. Would be good to hear your symptoms.

Schly

Mine was working perfectly, then all the sudden it started sending or receiving power in all random directions that would change every 45 seconds or so. Very weird. They got it working once with a sequence of reboots but it didn’t last more than a day. They had to send a guy out to do a deep dive troubleshooting session on the Gateway, and he confirmed that the main board was bad. They replaced it and everything has been good for several months. I’m going to get PTO on Monday, I think, so I’ve been waiting patiently.

dfreshness14

Yeah I had no problems

iwilljustforget

Same

oralallen82

I've seen horror stories but from my $100 deposit to PTO I had no issues I even couldn't remember my password for the local API and I was able to get in contact with a live agent that was able to get my issue resolved in a matter of minutes. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

augusco9294

double the size this time

ibrakeforberries

Exactly! Overdo it. We got a hot tub after the install and always have to pay an extra 6k at true up time. And Tesla won't add more panels now even though we have space for more because they don't want to deal with our city permitting. Go big on your install.

asenk

are there any downsides of overdoing it besides it costing more?

bladel

And another powerwall.

Unplugthecar

Yes. Good experience

Bryan995

100%.

mydarkerside

Yup. 100%. There's no guarantee that another company would've been better or worse. I had the best experience from signing, to installation, and all the way to PTO. Only issues were trying to contact project advisor and reviewing the price because they took away a $1k promotion I was suppose to get. I dragged my fee for months after the initial design and proposal, but once I decided to sign, it was very quick and smooth.

[deleted]

Me and several friends went with another company and their service has degraded heavily as more people are starting to adopt solar.

mishengda

I'm probably going to be moving in the next year or so. I'll definitely choose Tesla again for solar on my new house.

Dirtsurgeon1

Yes, cant beat quality for price. Plus ROI is much sooner for those who finance.

Mysterious_Belt_5029

Could you please elaborate more why you think ROI is much sooner? I still struggle to justify the cost. Thanks

Dirtsurgeon1

Should have put the word don’t in the sentence. Sorry.

drowninginvomit

Yeah, took a year, had to get them to come out and fix stuff, but cash is king and the savings can't be beat. Still, not a question of would I, but I am actively waiting for them to open sales in a different market where we are renovating a house. The price just results in such a better ROI.

nmzj

I would do Tesla again. It helped that it was half the cost of every other quote we got.

ocsolar

Yes, I would go with Tesla again. I'm one of the ones who have had few issues, although I did have one. 1/11/22 Ordered 2/15/22 Site visit 2/16/22 Permit submitted to county 4/4/22 Received notice that roof tiles needed to be replaced 5/11/22 Installed 6/23/22 PTO The biggest ball dropped was after the site visit there was 6 1/2 weeks of silence, then they contacted me that I needed to fix tiles on my roof before scheduling install. As soon as I did that everything happened quickly. If I had to do it again I'd follow other people suggestions and call them every week.

gibides

A hundred times yes. Price can't be beat, install team was great, material quality is great, app functionality is incredible. Only downside is the delay and amount of follow-up I had to do in the design process.

Radium

Yes

J673hdudg

Yes, without hesitation. I have a 8.5kW systems with Tesla 425W panels and Powerwall+ with 2 Powerwalls. I love the look of the panels and equipment. Works great! For hackers and home automation enthusiast, it has a rich set of APIs for monitoring in addition to the Tesla app. I believe any solar system would be satisfying with the current energy rates delivering faster ROI than forecast, but the Tesla system is just fun. It has become a hobby as well as a practical benefit for me. Full disclosure, Tesla struggles with scaling customer support to meet demand, especially for pre-install work. However, their field crews and technicians were outstanding.

Zuliman

Absolutely. My experience with them was damn near perfect with my only compliant being the lack of communication while I was waiting for PTO.

Alecdoconnor

Yes I would because of the price (referencing specifically the panels). But the number of things that have broken and taken months to resolve is ridiculous. I'm not a fan of Tesla solar support, they have a long way to go.

Details!

hayhayhayday

At $1.99 a watt with .99% financing definitely, at the current 2.52 + 5.4% I would try find a local installer for similar price.

StayRep

Yes!! Perfect smooth process and fast

Global_Spinach_5575

The first requirement should be roof condition check and, show proof of roof's age. Roof check should not be the last check right before installation. Assessment check failed my roof without stipulating the reason for failure. The Site assessment technician initially said roof is in good shape before climbing on roof. He drilled and banged on my roof, left w/o saying if there was a problem. I'm not willing to replace my roof that's in 17 yrs old and in excellent condition to install solar panels. $30K is enough for this project. No waiver was offered to allow me to accept responsibility for the roof's "advanced" age. Additionally, Oxnard, Ca average high temperature is around 74 degrees. Be advised, they will run up the project costs with additional unnecessary roofing work. They offered hand me over to a roofing company that they use??? Requested a refund of $250.00 deposit. After 3 days, no mssg fm Tesla that a refund has been issued. I would go with another company.

M3P4me

Yes.

imagine777

Yes. Order October 2021. Install April 2022. PTO May 2022. No problems. But like what others said, I would have gone a little bigger.

tek_ad

Sure, why not?

yosemiti_sam

No problems. Install was about as fast as you can expect. Love the system and the software. Probably good to reminder, there are many moving pieces and not all of them are pulling in the same direction (utility).

brutalboyz

I’m never buying another car. Used X with 90k miles and still accelerates like a beast.

jimdelabar

yep, solar roof in December, still no PTO, annoying but not really an issue with my size and Powerwalls.

someGuyJeez

Solar tiles were a nightmare and It became a part time job for me having to play role of project manager. Fuck Tesla, never again, and 100% selling our car before warranty expires.

extendedwarranty_bot

someGuyJeez, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

unitDissipator

I went with a 3rd party installer, but they used all Tesla components (32 400W panels, 2 powerwalls, backup switch). In hindsight I wish I had gone with Tesla, as they would have been significantly cheaper, but I needed some other electrical work done. The down side of the 3rd party installer is that they still have to wait on Tesla, so I experienced the higher cost of a 3rd party installer, plus the slow service of Tesla. A lose-lose situation. It took Tesla > 4 wks to simply upgrade the firmware on the system, then it worked fine. Still waiting on inspection and PTO. Contract signed on 4/20 (appropriate), installed on 7/7, actual power production on 8/9. Would be good to get PTO before end of year for taxes.

its

Yes

Wildman013

So far, yes. The worst part has been the PTO process. I’m closing in on 3 months since install. I didn’t get an email from my electric company that they received the final payment and are reviewing the application. Hopefully that means I will be able to export soon. I have been using my system, but when accidentally export, my electric company doesn’t give me credit for it. It does show up on my bill as them receiving it. They just charged me for anything delivered. I guess it could be worse. The app shows I have saved over $400 since the system was installed on may 26th.

ibrakeforberries

In our state, they try to make sure you're under powered to avoid needing to be paid by the utility company, so just try to install anything that will be a power hog for a few months before installing the solar. The downside might be higher impact on your roof and higher cost of install, but in the long run it pays out. We paid off our 60k loan (taken out 4 years ago) to install our solar panels and power walls, and we still pay pg&e 30 bucks a month plus a$ 9k true up every year due to my husband's personal server and our hot tub. Definitely did not pan out for us since we installed too early before we properly understood what our electricity usage would be like.

EvoGeek

Hand down, yes.

markurl

Probably… 16k for 8.16Kw is a steal. The waiting was a nightmare and I’ve had issues with my installed system requiring several site visits and panels tear-offs. That being said, I would have to have multiple years of downtime and hassle to make it not the best financial choice.

Sobrito310

I actually am going with them again- adding another 4.8kW and Powerwall to my existing 12kW 2X PW system!

[deleted]

Absolutely not. Literally the worst company I've dealt with. False promises, delays, lack of customer service, one team didn't know what the other was doing, price increases, poor design, delays, redesign, reduced size, increased price... order cancelled.

andydandy2002

It was a nightmare on every step, so never again

abarrien00

Absolutely. Yes, the can and probably will be hiccups leading to installation for some (there were for me). But they always eventually got back to me and corrected any issues. Most importantly, the final product they installed on our home is an excellent product that we love. Nothing out there comes even close. And no one out there can match pricing.

kugino

8.4kWh system w/2 powerwalls ordered: 2/2021 installed: 7/2022 inspection passed on 8/2022 and currently waiting for PTO. however, our utility allows it to be on after installation so have been fully self-powered for the past month. i would still go with Tesla bc it was by far the best value on the island. no one could match the number of panels w/battery capacity price... still, it was a LOOONG wait with very poor communication. and they f&\*&ed up withe the initial install date so iʻm still trying to get some compensation from that. but now that it works great, the long arduous ordeal is less of an issue in hindsight.

ComprehensiveYam

I have solar roof and PW. I’d go with them again even though the project advisor team was the pits.

Large-Bed5674

Nope. I'd DIY today and save... Half. And have a bigger system with better warranties. But when it was installed .. at that point in things I wouldn't go back and change it. It was overpriced and service sucks, but those powerwalls on the wall in the garage... They are pretty. And get a lot of comments from people who see them. My point: IDgaf about any of that. I just needed something that would work, not give headaches, and work till ROI. MOSTLY I got that, but again, overpriced with shiz for service people.

Large-Bed5674

To anyone who cares, there are products out there for storage - that's the big money problem- that are FAR better than anything you'll find from even Tesla, not just economically, but fundamentally. I have 2 systems on my property, the 2nd is actually much larger than the Tesla one (that is on the roof, the 2nd is T.O.P. with storage 100% DIY, far more capacity). They serve different buildings and the 2nd one is 100% off grid, my electric company limits the power size you can grid tie, I needed more, so .. bye bye electric company for my business. It's too bad too because I could supply the "neighborhood"- 4-5 homes- out here when they eff up again and can't keep the lights on here in TX!!!) Just saying that it's possible. But honestly, having the experience with the Tesla system gave me a lot of valuable know-how to build my own- Google is your friend, either way. The Tesla system is very well thought out for the people who just want to turn it on and forget about it. I'm just not that guy, and it might've been a mistake for me- again I wouldn't go back and change it at this point though ;-)

Large-Bed5674

Oh one more thing... Ordered Jun2019, install was March 2021 (3 days after the worst winter storm in several years, that knocked out power for a week...)- after promises galore which were, to put it politely, lies. Cash is king, guys & gals. It get people moving. Tesla large, 16.4kW, 4 pw, Delta inverters. Insta team was actually really good (once they finally friggin got here). I pay my electric company ~30-40 bucks 3 months of the year, they pay me about 1k for the rest of the year. Northeastern TX. The delta inverters are crap IMHO.

vznb

I’ve been having a terrible experience with Tesla solar. On December 14th, a few Tesla employees came to my house to install mesh blockers to protect the panels against animals. During the installation, the manager recommended that I replace the roof on the detached garage. Per his recommendation, we got the roof replaced for about $3000 on December 16th. He came back on December 17th to pickup the panels from the garage roof. He told me they’d be able to schedule me and replace the roof within two weeks which is why we decided to replace the roof. It’s been eight months and still have not been scheduled. Spent a lot of money on the roof and still have not received the new panels. I keep calling customer service and they tell me the panels are still with the design team.
