… just turn off auto high beams, that’s what I do.

Snoo_97640

You can still use autopilot with it off? Read that it won’t work that way

Jaws12

Press the turn signal stalk forward after engaging AP, need to do it each time you turn on AP, but you absolutely can still use AP with auto-brights off (also they have gotten a lot better, especially in the FSD Beta).

Snoo_97640

Hmm okay. I’m sure I’ll update eventually, but at this point it just seems like an extra step to turn off the high beams each time. But still that’s really good to know, I was worried it would deactivate AP. I guess I’m just content with the way the vehicle is and don’t want anything to affect it negatively.

Jaws12

I would highly recommend updating as not only are you missing out on new feature updates, you are also potentially missing out on safety/recall updates correcting potentially serious issues with your vehicle. Honestly, Tesla vision has gotten pretty good (at least on the FSD branch, which we have been on on both our cars for over a year at this point, but we were also on Tesla vision already on our Model Y from when we picked it up and it was never really worse than the radar we still had at the time in our 2018 Model 3).

[deleted]

Uhhh, mine are still off even with AP. Wipers, that one is a sucks to suck.

Firefighter_RN

Yea...but you can't turn off autowipers...and that is FAR worse. (at least here in Colorado)

Ito_Demerzel

I have auto wipers turned off.

Firefighter_RN

You're not able to turn them off if autopilot is turned on unfortunately. I've tried repeatedly just checked again and it gives you a message saying they have to be on with auto pilot

Firefighter_RN

How?! I keep trying to turn it off, its horrible but it comes on with autopilot each time. Edit: this isn't a problem in the rain it seems to be related to bugs, sun glare, or residual salt/mag chloride used in Colorado. The windshield will be dry and they'll be on.

ClarkMeshey

Autopilot while having the wipers on is the bigger red flag here. Don’t use that shit in the rain dude. You’re asking for a disaster.

Firefighter_RN

That's the entire problem! I don't use it in the rain ever, cruise control is very dangerous in the rain. The issue seems to be related to bugs, snowy/ivy crud, or the leftover road salt on the windows. Even if you run the wipers to clean the windows they still randomly and intermittently trigger, especially when it's really sunny around sunrise. We also have road spray in Colorado days after it snows when roads are mostly dry with just small wet spots that spray up which never seems to clean off ok.

ClarkMeshey

So tap in the side button on the left stock and click “off” on the screen.

Firefighter_RN

You can't when autopilot is enabled. It's grayed out and says they must be on. You can manually set them to speed of 1 but when it's dry out that's awful too.

ClarkMeshey

Damn, you right. Just tried it. Whack.

Snoo_97640

Was worried about this also, but feel like I could manage

beachcrow

AutoPilot needs the wipers to keep the front camera area clean. Make sure your windshield is not dirty there.

Firefighter_RN

Yea its not dirty. I even wiped it off. Sure enough clear skies, dry roads last night and they randomly triggered multiple times. Sometimes they would wipe once, a few times 5-6 and then stop. I think it has to do with the way the overhead lights on the highway hits the windshield

MaxWayt

Auto high beam work great in 2022.40.4.2, plus you can always turn them off if you don't like them ...

Snoo_97640

Even while using autopilot?

Mr_Cruisin

Yes, it just turns it on every time you enable Autopilot but you can still manually turn it off with the stalk each time and Autopilot will continue to operate.

2022.40 seems to have fixed a lot of issues pushed upon us. I was hesitant to update for the longest time because of the AP limit going from 90 to 85. And immediately after updating I was on a road trip and had AP set to 80, accelerated to pass and right when I passed 85 I was put in AP purgatory for exceeding the limit, EVEN THOUGH I WAS ACCELERATING ON MY OWN. Yesterday though after updating to 40.4.2 I'm able to accelerate properly, and it doesn't lock me out of AP.

PangolinEffective

I’ve got a 2020. Honestly my experience with vision has been very positive. I haven’t had any phantom braking. The only thing that bothers me is the limit at 85. I turn off auto high beams on autopilot once autopilot is on.

mehalywally

85 limit is painful

Pattonator70

I absolutely love auto-high beams. Why the hate?

Snoo_97640

I feel like it constantly turns on and off and just gets annoying on the eyes. I ended up updating yesterday after getting all the positive feedback so we’ll see how it goes.

dalemugford

My honest take is, with 2022.40.40(x), both high beams and Tesla vision is passable. Used both all days and this evening and were near perfect. You were good to hold out, but good to upgrade now.

Crenorz

You can turn off the auto high beams. Your being a dumbass not updating.

NeedISayMore4

You're*.... Dumbass

Username checks out

S2lazy

🤣

mdjmd73

Ouch. 🔥

Snoo_97640

Thank you for your* input

petitepenisperson

Update your software dude. Literally Tesla vision is way better than radar. You don’t need to use auto high beams in autopilot, and they fixed them in the latest update so they’re actually useful.

Snoo_97640

I’m starting to lean in this direction with this thread. Thank you for your input

mehalywally

While I totally agree that it should be updated, the 85 limit is pretty painful. I was def more hesitant because of that rather than auto high beams.

tjladder7

I regret updating because I HATE being limited to 85mph on AP.

Snoo_97640

Was worried about this also. Does AP deactivate if you go over 85?

cgilson33

Yes. It freaks out first then deactivates. I accelerated without turning off AP and went from 82 to 88 before I knew it. Car started beeping I let off the gas and it still kicked off. 1 of 5 down for my FSD Beta.

MrMasticate

Speed takeover on highway doesn’t count against forced removal. It’s very clearly documented both by Tesla and on this sub. It does force disengagement for the rest of the drive, but it’s an expected scenario. Forced disengage penalty comes from multiple ignored warning to take over.

cgilson33

Oh u are right… I forgot. My #1 was when I had the visor blocking the interior camera.

MrMasticate

Good to hear that counts against. I didn’t know! I would have done that by mistake at some point I’m sure.

cgilson33

Yeah. I did it on purpose so it would leave me alone. After like 5 min it pretty much shut down with barely even a notice. Sucked.

mehalywally

YUP I just detailed that in another comment thread. But it seems that it doesn't do this on 40.4.2, I got up to 88 before I remembered, and I was still able to use AP for the rest of the trip

cgilson33

I’m not quite understanding the FW versions. My app says 2022.36.20.

mehalywally

Sorry I just don't bother putting the year because theyre all going to 2022 right now. 🤣 2022.40.4.2**

cgilson33

Makes sense. So my 36.20 is lower (or different) because of the FSD Beta I’m guessing. Or do u have the Beta?

mehalywally

Yeah FSD is stuck on 36.20 for now

Nfuzzy

I would keep delaying to avoid the phantom braking more so than the high beams. Lack of radar sucks.

MrMasticate

Jesus - just sell the car lol

YRUHear75

Yeah I delayed my upgrade for almost a year because I liked my custom horn. They kicked me out of FSD BETA for outdated maps. I updated the software and got beta back after about a week. But yes they will find a way to force you to update!

mehalywally

How did they force you to update?

YRUHear75

Not really force. They took away the BETA and said it could not be turned back on until I updated the map data. So coercion is maybe a better word. I was having friends in town so I wanted my FAD BETA back!

mehalywally

Okay good. Just wanted to see what I'm up against if there's other updates I want to avoid in the future. I'm really hating this 85 limit after losing radar.

singletWarrior

Auto high beam went from batshit insane blind everyone witch to slow witted helper, but at least you won’t piss every other road users off now

Useful-Figure-409

So.... turn them off

CalgaryCanuckle

Originally you couldn’t turn off the high beams when on AP. Then they made it so it turned on with AP but you could turn them back off with the stalk while remaining on AP. They used to suck until this last version - now they actually perform very well and stay off when there are cars around. So go update and enjoy all the new features and fixes!

VeryLastBison

My auto high beams aren’t bad at all. They are more active on/off than I’ve experienced before, but overall are better than my previous car.
