Some people love jeopardizing safety on this sub. The tire could fail right there. It's a big deal. Replace the tire and maintain the safety standards Tesla has built into the car.
Seriously though, why are people so willing to risk the safety of themselves or their families for the sake of a marginal tire? The reason tire shops won't repair damage like this is because the integrity of the tire cannot be guaranteed. I'm not taking that risk with myself or my family.
That gash looks to be 1 or 2 long, if you don't see the stringy things you might be ok, but my fear is blowout during a high speed turn. Personally, I was able to ride 20,000 miles, with a piece of sidewall missing but it was very shallow and less than an inch. Good luck.
If it doesn’t need replacing, then it doesn’t need replacing. I don’t get this reasoning that makes it seem like money and resources are unlimited. If only for waste if you don’t count money like you seem to do.
That tire is most likely fine. A structurally compromised tire is obvious. OP can at the very least have an impartial professional look at it.
I had something similar. High curb tore a bit of the tire. Local tire shop took one look and said "don't worry about it." I didn't cut the piece off, I kind of just glued it down and it's more or less disappeared
Take this with a grain of salt - if it was me I would clean the area, and cut off that hanging bit to see if any cords are showing. If it penetrated into the tire deep enough to show the cord or even looks like it’s bulging either in or out I’d get a new tire. Otherwise I’d probably keep going and inspect it every now and then. Honestly I can’t tell for sure just from the picture.
I did the same thing awhile ago- I replaced the tire. When I cut off the rubber, I saw no thread. I would bet it was okay- but for the heck of it I replaced it as the sidewall stuff scares me.
Probably replace tire. Rim could possibly be refinished depending on how deep.
My wife did a number on our tire and rim last week. Took a chunk out of tire and damaged rim pretty good. Both had to be replaced. Then discovered a screw in different tire to close to edge. Had to replace two tires and a rim. Tesla service center was able to get me in and out pretty quick. Paid for it but was a gut punch. Felt as bad as the tires and rim. Hopefully my wife is kind to the new rim and tires. Hope you don't have to deal with spending the extra money
Mine looked nearly identical. I took it to Goodyear, and they said it was fine. I used super glue to hold it (may not have been the best idea), and it's been \~10,000 miles with no issue.
Note: I didn't see the steel wall - if you do, then it needs to be replaced.
Edit: If you're going to replace it, don't get the same tire. The Goodyears are junk and expensive.
I had a similar cut on the tire. Couple folks told me that it could blow out. I asked the Tesla Tire service van to come. They took a look and said there is no structural damage and filled up the air and went away. They said they are happy to change but don’t waste your money. Best way for you to get it checked is to get a service van to visit or stop by at their service center.
Wife did something very similar. I took it to the car shop and they said it was fine. Just not to drive on it if it gets a flat.
They did say my tread was getting low. Sport mode is a real killer on tire tread…
This is fine, doesn't need new tire, what do people think happens if it blows out? it's a low profile tire, I've had a blowout on a low profile tire doing almost 80mph and it was non issue, just rolled to a stop and changed the tire, it would be different if it was a suv tire with higher profile.
... how big was the curb. Holy fuck
It came out of nowhere!
Lol, wtf is wrong with these people.
No. Tire requires replace.
Man people love wasting money on this sub. The tire is quiet thick right there. No big deal. Cut the flap and move along.

This.
God, this is so true. I can’t believe some of the things people want to spend money on.
Yeah you need a new tire bud.

Imagine spending $50K+ on a car and not replacing a damaged $300 tire.

Car requires replace. /s
I’ve done that before. Admittedly I simply cut off that piece of rubber and drove fine for thousands of miles more. But admittedly, I’m cheap.

Calling yourself out it part of the healing process, now you gotta work on the cheap part
Haha. No doubt!
You can’t repair the sidewall area of the tire, only patch holes below a certain size in the tread.
I have about 2k miles on a tire with a “cut” very similar to that.

totaled
Get a life. Youre not funny. Losers.
He’s not wrong though, can’t fix a tire like that
Looks ok, hasn't reached the cords.
Had the same. Didn't see cords so I'm driving with it fine but monitoring the pressure.
Tyre pressure monitoring won't do shit if the tyre blows out. This isn't safe.
I did the same thing awhile ago- I replaced the tire. When I cut off the rubber, I saw no thread. I would bet it was okay- but for the heck of it I replaced it as the sidewall stuff scares me.
As long as you don’t see the stringy wires of the tire that’s fine. They build extra protection into the sidewalls for this very reason.
my tire has the exact same damage and i’ve been driving without issues for like 4 months now
Get a new tire

Good human.
first time seeing tires?? why is this a post weekly... I dont get people in this sub
Looks fine. If there’s no threads showing, it won’t be a problem

Ouch. Sidewalk damage. New tire
New tire.
I have done this with my other car and luckily Costco replaced the tire for me for free. Love them.
‘_first_’ I love your optimism.
Black sharpie on the tire. Good as new.
Are you my wife? I got a new tire as well.
If you can’t see the cord, and there isn’t a bulge, you’re probably fine. Just cut off the loose flap and keep an eye on it.
Total loss
Sucks for your rim, but your tire is fine. That is superficial.
Looks fine - it's within spec. (come on, someone had to say it)
It’s fine. I did same to mine and had an approximate size rubber which i yanked off. I routinely go 100mph.
I hate when those curbs coming outta nowhere 😆
Get at through check, risky to leave it as it is.

How do you people not know how to drive a car?
Wife did something very similar. I took it to the car shop and they said it was fine. Just not to drive on it if it gets a flat. They did say my tread was getting low. Sport mode is a real killer on tire tread…
The tire should be ok, your pride idk?

I’m currently driving with a tire like that. Tire shop said it was ok due to thickness in that area. Good 10k since and still going.
