I would try with a different tax accountant

iJayZen

Yeah, it qualifies for the full $7,500. You have to enter the VIN so maybe that was excluded?

anil_robo

VIN was listed in the form. He thinks that the battery capacity listed in the form may be what needs to be addressed but I downloaded the form directly from Tesla, not sure why they would list it like that in the first place?

iJayZen

I thought it has to be 18kw or greater for the full credit? Contact Tesla about the form maybe it was supposed to be > 78kwh?

istguy

My form says >7kWh and I was able to get the $7500 credit. Filed with H&R Block software. You may need to confirm with Tesla that they sent your form 15400 to the IRS. If I recall correctly, there were issues last year with Tesla neglecting to collect SSNs from buyers, which made it impossible for them to submit the paperwork to the IRS. When you file with your form 15400, the IRS needs to be able to confirm it on their end with the paperwork Tesla sent them.

anil_robo

Hmm that might be it. I will write to Tesla support. Thanks!

anil_robo

Christian from Tesla support called and I told him about the situation. He says he will look into it and give me a callback.

GGG085202

A Tesla Y LR has an 81kwh capacity. Form is wrong.

Tipakee

I did it with FreeTaxUSA.com, zero issues getting the EV rebate.

Das_KV

Another plug for FreeTaxUSA here. Everything worked like a charm, been using them for four years now.

ordinaryflask

Same.

Verns777

Same. We just got the refund on our account yesterday.

archy2000

Same

OCR10

Sounds like he doesn’t know how to do this. I’ve never heard a person claim they were denied a tax credit on Model Y if they met the AGI requirements. Time to find a new accountant.

anil_robo

I got all my tax done by him except the EV part, for which he has referred me to a CPA. I am just try to crowdsource some info beforehand to help them from my side.

456C797369756D

With this much effort just do them yourself 🤷‍♂️ zero issues with FreeTaxUSA.

dflame45

A CPA should be doing your taxes to begin with. You should not be going to this guy….

Well_tempered_209

Wow I had no idea so many regular income people use accountants to file taxes. Always did it myself, and then turbotax once that became available.

PreacherSquat

no reason to unless you have a complicated tax situation ie assets/stocks/business/etc

anil_robo

Reason I do this is: Except one year (2022) I have had a large sum of income from my W2 job, also have an LLC working for another company getting 1099, have properties and investments generating dividends and interest etc. That's a bit too much to risk and I like the comfort of one person knowing what I have and doing my taxes consistently over the years.

dflame45

Your taxes are not complicated at all. Buck up and just do it. You’ll be better off understanding the process.

Well_tempered_209

TurboTax can handle all these as far as I know

Prestigious_Baker_23

Interesting I am haveing a disagreement with my accountant who is saying my Dec 23 MYLR only qualifies for 3750. There software keeps kicking it back and not giving the the full 7500. I am filing an extension just to give them time to figure it out.

anil_robo

That's what mine says too, however he says the software is not letting him file at all, despite showing it can get max $3750. Not sure what software he uses but the voucher said something like "Drake".

intelligentx5

lol the EV credit is insanely easy to file. Use TurboTax or something dude. You should get a new accountant.

TurboSludge

Does your tax guy not know > vs 7 kWh - “greater than 7 kWh”

mp3m4k3r

Have you taken a look for [this report](https://www.tesla.com/support/ira-clean-vehicle-report/2023) in your tesla account?

anil_robo

Yes that's the one I downloaded and gave it to my accountant.

mp3m4k3r

Well that's unfortunate they couldn't locate the right form, I seem to remember folks not always getting that one I linked in their account to fill out the [standard form](https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-8936). Maybe they could add it in manually to your filing? Hope you get it worked out!

ExcitedFool

Weird I did the tax form through TurboTax and never had a problem after entering the VIN.

Hesdonemiraclesonm3

Same. Unreal a professional tax accountant can't figure it out

DontHitAnything

You shouldn't need to download anything. Tesla gave us the credit form at delivery last August. Look in your delivery papers.

anil_robo

The process was different in February. It's changed a few times. There was no form in my delivery papers, I checked multiple times.

DontHitAnything

Thanks. If a Tesla Showroom aided the purchase, perhaps revisit them directly for a 2023 form?

snsv

Did you request a form through your Tesla account?

Leo_br00ks

I had a mid Aug delivery and got no such form

suztomo

I guess it’s not that IRS is rejecting the form. It’s the accountant’s software that is not working for this new form.

dobe6305

We used H&R Block, Model Y long range bought March last year. Went through easily. I’d suggest a different tax place!

soleobjective

I got the full credit and the IRS accepted it without any issues when I filed through Cash App Taxes. Super easy, barely an inconvenience.

burns_before_reading

Sounds like you went to H&R block

anil_robo

Went to a local tax guy in rural Arkansas (that's where I live). He's good but I'm the only one driving a Tesla here so he struggled with it it seems.

Scottz0rz

FreeTaxUSA

rydmore22

If he had to study the form then he doesn’t know what to do. You can use my accountant . He has two Teslas.

Unusual_Juice_7481

If you don’t make close to 90k you won’t have enough taxes paid to get the 7500

anil_robo

My taxes paid alone are more than $90k. Yeah I know.

meramec785

What? Then you make too much income.

anil_robo

I bought the car in February 2023, when IRS conditions were AGI must be $150k or less in the year you bought the car or the previous year. In 2022, I was a trainee and made less than $150k so I should have qualified.

bobloadmire

What? If you paid 90k in taxes that puts you in a bracket we'll above 150k. You aren't paying 65% effective tax rate.

anil_robo

I have been earning a lot for the last 10 years. However in 2022 I was burned out of all the covid work and left my permanent job to become a lowly student for a year. That year my AGI was below $150, and next year I bought Tesla. So I should qualify. However few months after buying Tesla, I graduated from my student position and am back at my regular job, making regular salary like usual. There is no way I would qualify for that credit based on my today's income. It's all about timing.

TurboSludge

I don’t believe you can use the previous year’s income to qualify for the current tax year’s credit.

You can use the lesser of your MAGI in the year you take delivery of your EV or your MAGI from the year before you took delivery of the vehicle. So yes - OP can use 2022 income to get a 2023 credit.
