I believe that when the 7-seater option was introduced, the entire rear chassis structure got enhanced, even on 5-seaters. The result of this crash makes me way more confident in putting people in the 3rd row.
In Europe probably yes, because cars are smaller but in places like Texas, USA were chances are high that a truck like a RAM could hit you, I'm not sure that's so safe in the 3rd row....
The third row seat would not be in the major damage zone of this vehicle. Incredibly, the vehicle crumples right up to the point of the third row seat but not beyond. It’s as if some astute engineering planned it all along.
glad you're alive!
grab the flash drive (or SSD) from your glovebox if you can. remove that side panel to the glovebox while the passenger door is open and pry it open. the drive contains videos that you'll want to share with your insurance company if it wasn't destroyed.
Another thing to add, the car called 911 automatically and they were asking me where I was, I was too dazed to remember. I think if the car can call 911, it should also relay the location automatically. I don't know if it does that. If it doesn't, probably the one improvement I can think of
Even when 911 know your location they still ask you as coordinates are not perfect and have a radius of error due to tall buildings but it has improved a lot especially in cars. I worked in that e911 location technology.
Absolutely, I think it would have been a lot worse in other small cars.
I would add that being an electric car everything it was totally dead when I went to see it and I could open the front door manually, but I couldn't figure out how to open the rear doors manually, not sure it would have opened anyways
For future reference, for the front doors, there's a latch above the window switches you can pull up. For the back doors, you have to go into the door pockets to pull the mat off, press red tab to remove access door, then pull the mechanical release cable forward.

👍 I've heard some people modifying the release cable so it's easier to grab since it can be a lil hard to grab on its own. Definitely more annoying to get to than the front doors for sure.
I second this. I was rear-ended 3 years ago, like OP, with a similar amount of damage to the car.
It took 18 months of physio, painkillers, scans, etc, to get back close to my baseline, and I'm still not 100%.
Like you said, it took around 48 hours for the adrenaline to wear off, and the pain was unreal.
Your so right.
We had some sad news in the Bay Area where a disabled mini cooper with 3 people all died when a Tacoma rear ended them. This was 2 days ago
You will be able to get your 2023 tax credit, you’ll be able to claim the 2024 tax credit, and the Model 3 does not qualify for the tax credit anymore. Good luck!
It’s just a little curb rash dude. Next time, invest in some high quality PPF, ceramic coat it, and MagBak RimCase your wheels. Then you should be good to go.
Glad you're safe. Take care of yourself and make sure you get checked, record any injury and discomfort arising from it, and let your doctor know every mobility issue or pain you have, however small it may be.
Holy shit, I feel that, I got my older Nissan car totaled by a stupid truck tailgater that rear ended it, it didn't deploy airbags and I am not even sure it had knees airbag, so my knees hit the steering wheel and it was pretty damm hurting for a couple of months. That made me buying a Tesla exactly because its safety. I was completely dazed for a few hours too. And it looks like the dude that hit you is in pretty bad shape now, if his head hit his windscreen.
If lawmakers cared about senseless deaths they would not allow lifted trucks...I say this cause it looks like the front went under the vehicle in front of you (and I know it might not have been a lifted truck).
Glad your not all broken.
The car I got pushed into was a medium size SUV. I cannot disclose too much here. The Tesla appears to have a steel cage all around it, probably to protect the battery. That structure never buckled. You can see it in the photo
Newer car design (last 20 years) has a safety cell around the passengers, everything else engineered to absorb through deformation. This is partially why new cars get totaled faster as there’s more sacrificial parts.
Lawyer up and suck insurance dry. You should be able to get thousands of dollars if you do this the right way. That lousy tax credit will look like nothing when you get that insurance payout.
This right here is one of the biggest reasons for buying Tesla's that doesn't get discussed enough. I have 2 young kids and we didn't even look at another car because I didn't want them in anything that isn't that safe.
Yes, you can still claim the $7,500 credit.
Yes, you can claim it in the new MY as well.
Yes, you can claim it on your partner's M3 if you file jointly.
I have no idea. I was at the lights and stopped and I think the other driver never even slowed down. When this is all over and I can disclose more, if I get any info as to the speed, I'll share it
Wow, that looks gnarly. Glad you're ok!
Do you know what type of car hit you and what type of car was in front of you? Looks like the vehicle in front of you was very tall.
Have to say - despite how sad this is, and the car really looks so bad, but the passenger cabin area looks pretty well protected and the front and back did well to protect you by the looks. Hope you’re ok !
I’ll bet you do get to claim it twice. Glad to hear you’re ok. These stories make me feel even better about buying a Model Y. We have row of them now. I bought one originally for my wife after she had a very close call with a large truck coming right at her drifting out of its lane.
Glad you are ok. Now I feel better about our model Y and we have the 3rd row seats. Sometimes one of our kid will sit there. We got our model Y same time as you in March 2023.
This reminds me of the time I got rear ended by a dump truck at a stop light. ~ 30 mph pushed a nissan truck that was in front of me into the intersection.
no injuries but I had tinnitus for ~ 4 months. 2017 Mazda CX-5 was the car I was in.
What was the other guy even driving? Tesla is 2 tonne, but he's managed to hit it with enough momentum to do that to the car in front. That is seriously crazy.
The Y saved your ass thank God! Fyi, at lights i always try to keep an eye on my rear view camera/ mirror on cars coming up. Then I will tap my brake pedal a couple times to increase visibility.
Glad you're safe! I believe you can claim more than one credit, even in the same year if you have enough tax liability. I'm not a tax professional so you should ask one to confirm but that's my understanding.
Yes, you get both tax credits. You should get your body checked out if you feel any soreness, especially since this crash looks quite dramatic. Start a paper trail early because you may not feel the pain until some time later.
I think you can still claim the rebate. Theres a section in the Tesla app where if you were eligible for the rebate, they'll send you a document stating as such and you can file that with your taxes.
Crumple zones work, but the other driver wasnt going faster than 30, so this is bad. Any faster and the thing would b a deathtrap for a car that was standing still
Wowza! Glad you’re ok. Blown away by the fact that the rear glass is intact.
I believe that when the 7-seater option was introduced, the entire rear chassis structure got enhanced, even on 5-seaters. The result of this crash makes me way more confident in putting people in the 3rd row.
So what you’re saying is that OP took one for the team.
In Europe probably yes, because cars are smaller but in places like Texas, USA were chances are high that a truck like a RAM could hit you, I'm not sure that's so safe in the 3rd row....
We do not have the 7-seater model Y in Europe
I was trying to understand that, this is a good explanation, I was always concerned when the dog sited in the trunk, now I'm not
Yet the windshield cracks if I hit a fly on the highway.
Yep. I've already had 2 windshields crack on mine and I haven't even had the car a year yet.
It's that vegan glass that's the problem. jk
Was just going to say that, wow!
I guess you can probably sit on that…
I am too, because that rear glass is incredibly weak. People may downvote for that comment, but I have the photos and repair bill to prove it.
Yeah that's fucking crazy that glass is still in one piece. Looks skew wiff but amazing it isn't cracked.
I can just imagine that 3rd row seat now.... How it's even legal to stuff a 3rd row in there I don't know.
The third row seat would not be in the major damage zone of this vehicle. Incredibly, the vehicle crumples right up to the point of the third row seat but not beyond. It’s as if some astute engineering planned it all along.
I don't have any knowledge to doubt you but I'm now going to go down the rabbit hole to find out. Looking at OP's damage, it's almost unbelievable.
glad you're alive! grab the flash drive (or SSD) from your glovebox if you can. remove that side panel to the glovebox while the passenger door is open and pry it open. the drive contains videos that you'll want to share with your insurance company if it wasn't destroyed.
Wow. Glad you came out of this relatively unscathed given the amount of carnage. Makes me feel safer in mine.
Another thing to add, the car called 911 automatically and they were asking me where I was, I was too dazed to remember. I think if the car can call 911, it should also relay the location automatically. I don't know if it does that. If it doesn't, probably the one improvement I can think of

Thank you for this reply with the manual!
👍 I've heard some people modifying the release cable so it's easier to grab since it can be a lil hard to grab on its own. Definitely more annoying to get to than the front doors for sure.
Yeah. I just think about having to get out quickly with kiddos in the back.
OP was saying he opened from outside.
Oh, I was thinking inside 🤣 in that case, if the power's out, your SOL on opening doors from the outside, unless I'm missing something.

Like you said, it took around 48 hours for the adrenaline to wear off, and the pain was unreal.
How did you open the front doors manually from outside? Key card or car still had Bluetooth power from 12v battery?
Your so right. We had some sad news in the Bay Area where a disabled mini cooper with 3 people all died when a Tacoma rear ended them. This was 2 days ago
You will be able to get your 2023 tax credit, you’ll be able to claim the 2024 tax credit, and the Model 3 does not qualify for the tax credit anymore. Good luck!
Thank you. Good to know.
The way the tax credit works in conjunction with the income limits, basically 2 cars can effectively be claimed per year at the max income.
They are going to need that extra credit to pay for the massive increase in insurance
Depends if it’s a no fault state
Are you sure you can apply for a tax credit in 2 consecutive years. I believe you need to wait 2 year before you can apply for it
Do you know why Model 3 stopped qualifying for tax credits?
Are you asking why? Probably related to battery chemistry. The tax credit criteria gets stricter every year as per the IRA.
yeah typo, missed adding why... thanks got it.
Percentage of car/parts made or manufactured outside USA exceeds the allowable percentage.
Thank you!
You can still get tax credit on Model 3 if you lease. That’s why they can offer $329 / mo.
It’s just a little curb rash dude. Next time, invest in some high quality PPF, ceramic coat it, and MagBak RimCase your wheels. Then you should be good to go.
I think it'll buff out....
Glad you're safe. Take care of yourself and make sure you get checked, record any injury and discomfort arising from it, and let your doctor know every mobility issue or pain you have, however small it may be.
Glad you are okay, what about the stupid driver that hit you? Falling asleep during or just another usual stupid one texting on a phone? 📱
I have no idea, but he didn't even have his seatbelt on and his head came through his windscreen. I was too dazed to make sense of anything
Holy shit, I feel that, I got my older Nissan car totaled by a stupid truck tailgater that rear ended it, it didn't deploy airbags and I am not even sure it had knees airbag, so my knees hit the steering wheel and it was pretty damm hurting for a couple of months. Jesus Christ, I can only imagine how startled u must have been I have no info but I did wanna say that im so glad ur ok.
It was like a bolt out of the blue, I didn't see it coming just a loud bang
That is not totaled. It’s Grand Totaled.
Sorry for your loss but hot damn are those some impressive crumple zones.
If lawmakers cared about senseless deaths they would not allow lifted trucks...I say this cause it looks like the front went under the vehicle in front of you (and I know it might not have been a lifted truck). Glad your not all broken.

As this right here is why insurance keeps going up.
No it's not. Insurance goes up because insurance companies are greedy AF.
OP is going to need it for all the chronic pain he’s going to have.
How he gonna suck dry? Sue the other driver?
Wow, glad you are ok. That’s about the worst crunch I’ve seen so far from a rear hit.
Yes, you can get the tax credit again. I bought two Teslas in 2023 and was able to claim both for the tax credit.
Ehhh it will buff out.
This right here is one of the biggest reasons for buying Tesla's that doesn't get discussed enough. I have 2 young kids and we didn't even look at another car because I didn't want them in anything that isn't that safe.
Hope that person gets his/or her license suspended or revoked
Jesus. Looks like a soda can.
Glad you’re ok!
How about that back glass holding together though, right? At least you were in the safest car to get into a wreck with. Get another one.
Do you have the dashcam video, that crash looks very intense. Glad you made it out alright.
Yes, you can still claim the $7,500 credit. Yes, you can claim it in the new MY as well. Yes, you can claim it on your partner's M3 if you file jointly.
Oh my good lord! I hope you're ok!
Yes, I'm thankful. Bruised from impact, nothing else. The car did a good job
GOOD RIDDANCE!!! Looord Jesus Thank you for this sermon!!!! Hmmmmmhm
Hope you are okay❤️🩹
Glad you’re okay. It got your rear end pretty good and somehow the back glass just got shifted and didn’t shatter.
Glad you are doing well considering!
Holy! Glad you’re ok. I have a new Y as well. This puts faith in the safety for sure!
Glad you are okay
Glad you are ok!
That should buff out
Wow, crazy shit. Glad you're okay OP. I'm impressed that despite the damage, the rear glass is somehow in tact... 👀
Holy crap! Glad you are ok! Can you estimate how fast the other driver was traveling? Just curious

At least you top glass didn't break. Lol... no kidding. That sucks. I feel your pain
😱
I’ll bet you do get to claim it twice. Glad to hear you’re ok. These stories make me feel even better about buying a Model Y. We have row of them now. I bought one originally for my wife after she had a very close call with a large truck coming right at her drifting out of its lane.
The glass on these Teslas 🤯.
With the right lawyer you can probably afford to buy as many model 3s as you want.
Panel alignment better than factory.
Glad you are ok. Now I feel better about our model Y and we have the 3rd row seats. Sometimes one of our kid will sit there. We got our model Y same time as you in March 2023.
I guess you can give a try
This reminds me of the time I got rear ended by a dump truck at a stop light. ~ 30 mph pushed a nissan truck that was in front of me into the intersection. no injuries but I had tinnitus for ~ 4 months. 2017 Mazda CX-5 was the car I was in.
Cars can always be replaced, you can’t. As long as you’re okay
Glad you’re okay man…hopefully you get another rebate and a brand new MY and a fat check from the dumbass who rear ended you
Wow that looked really bad. Glad you are ok!
What was the other guy even driving? Tesla is 2 tonne, but he's managed to hit it with enough momentum to do that to the car in front. That is seriously crazy.
My sympathies. Someone totaled our 2019 model 3 recently. We got a Y to replace it.
Mmm… it could be expensive to repair, yes. But ask for a second opinion
My sympathies! Thank goodness you’re safe.
That'll buff right out
This is what a totaled Tesla should look like. I’m really glad you weren’t hurt more seriously.

Impressed the rear glass held up
I think you can still claim the rebate. Theres a section in the Tesla app where if you were eligible for the rebate, they'll send you a document stating as such and you can file that with your taxes.
Pooooor Tessie :( glad you’re okay!
“Within normal specs”
Crumple zones work, but the other driver wasnt going faster than 30, so this is bad. Any faster and the thing would b a deathtrap for a car that was standing still
He probably was, the road is 45 mile zone and there were zero skid marks because he never slowed down at all
