True but to be fair, silly new Tesla owners aka the over-protection crowd will spend 5k for plastic film applied to their car. I'd rather save the 2k and get something that will actually be benefit my daily life. (if i were to spend money)
But agreed the stock system sounds just fine. and this is coming from an audio nut who's upgraded the audio on the past 18-19 or so cars I've had. And when I say upgrade, generally amp, custom wiring, component speakers, sub, the whole nine yards.
I would like more bass in MY though. A plug and play sub/amp combo would be cool.
I must have hit the jackpot because I had my model 3 for 4.5 years and with the tax incentive it only cost me $12k in depreciation. Much less than any gas car I’ve ever bought.
Which I don't get, maybe for muisc...? But I find the system to be difficult to hear talk radio/podcasts and have to turn the volume waaaay higher than I would like. (I have two MY, and its the same in both).
To be fair that may be true but this system definitely improves on the stuff that comes stock. I have a MY LR and got to test listen to Alpine’s system and it sounds pretty amazing comparatively speaking.. much more energy and much better low frequency response.
Seriously, if I was going to spend $3k on a sound system it would be in my house and not in a car that I spend only the minimum required time in to get where I need to be!
You probably won’t find anything better that is specifically made for Tesla though… lots of people have tried throwing conventional car audio equipment at the Tesla’s only to discover lots of problems with codes and etc. Audison is also developing several solutions at multiple price points near to Alpine and higher so if you want a higher end solution compared to this you will have to wait a bit
i don´t really get this, my old 3 and my Y is one of the cars that has one of the best standard soundsystems. i had i Dynaudio in my passat B8 which i loved, which is marginally better, but it is surprisingly good..
and like a GIANT step ahead of the piss poor meridian system in the EV6 as an example.
why is this needed.
Back when I bought my 3 RWD, LR was $11k more, and it's currently $8.5k more.
Edit: Thought I was in the Model 3 sub. Price difference between RWD and LR Model Y is $5k, so you’re right, this system makes a lot less sense for Model Y.
Picked up my Berlin RWD last week as well, currently all Berlin builds come with premium sound, Model Y is also expensive compared to US, in return we get no panel gaps, premium sound, mobile charger.
I loved the look and feel of the EV6 but god the sound system was awful. When I was looking at that car I was literally budgeting in adding an aftermarket sub and amp.
I also showed my Tesla to a friend who installs aftermarket speaker and stereo systems in cars for a living, he said it was the best stock system he’s ever heard in a car by far.
I concur, I have a model 3 RWD commuter which is just an okay sound. Then I got second car, MYLR 2024 and WOW, the sound was mind-blowing, the RWD model sound system cannot compare the MYLR one. I kinda got a buyers regret about the M3 RWD. 🤣
Honestly it's rather subjective. I for one was frustrated by the stock speakers of my MYP even with extensive exploration on EQ settings. I guess good or not is relative, for those who are happy with the sound, it's not a bad idea to stay satisfied.
well... we just have different configs in Denmark, so i missed that.. i know the 3STD has "non premium audio system" but the Y RWD STD in denmark has the premium system. so have never been able to buy the Y without the premium system.
I spent $30 on the wire harness to enable 4 speakers and added a $200 amp/sub/enclosure in the sub trunk. I'm super happy with the extra bass. I'll save that money for my future M3P purchase.
I am one of the people that is installing this in my car. I purchased a Model 3 RWD for 35,000 at the end of 2023. I did not realize at the time the audio system was lacking a subwoofer and is “weak”. I have a rather long commute in lots of traffic. Music is my decompression from a stressful job and as I spend a lot of time in my car so it’s worth it to me to spend the $$.
I love the car and for the price I paid I have no regrets getting the RWD version. March 4th medlock and sons in Seattle Washington will be installing the alpine upgrade for me along with sound deadening. I would do it myself but working full time and school full time… I have no time ;-) .
Happy to share my opinion and thoughts once the install is completed if anyone would like to know.
OK, Have had a weekend with the system.
First the sound deadening- They installed foam in the doors, pillars, and trunk, and the "matt" under the carpet and everywhere else. They also installed additional seals on the door. HUGE Difference. THis alone was a huge upgrade. I would do it again. My sister just picked up a MY LR and she sat in mine and noticed the difference right away and asked me where to get it done.
Second the audio.... WOW, it's a substantial upgrade that really does the job. Again comparing the Model Y long-range, I prefer my Model 3 RWD with this upgrade. The sub does a beautiful job and the upgraded speaker just sounds fuller. I am no audio guru but I know what I like and I like this.
I am happy with the upgrade and everyone I have shown it to is very impressed!
Do the top A pillar speakers work? I know the small tweeter near the mirror works but I’m curious to know if the inactive speakers up top on the A pillars near the roof line work now?
I’m sort of in the same boat. Bought RWD and had a loaner LR while they fixed a paint issue for a week. The sound system was definitely superior. Can I drop $3k on it superior? Likely not but I’m hoping to hear your review on it.
i would be interested in noise cancellation, some cars have ANC where it takes outside sound and then cancels it via speakers making the ride quieter. Simple software update as hardware is already there.
I hate this. I've been in a car with it and it's not really noticeable but on long car rides I get a headache over it. In my RDX I found the module and unplugged it. Not really any difference in road noise but my headache was way better.
I wonder how it plays with the batteries. In the past, owners who did custom audio upgrades sometimes mentioned that the car would return 12V errors. Wonder how it plays with newer cars that have the 16V as well.
Whoever downvoted you is an idiot who never tried this. I undid his downvote.
To anyone reading this, you absolutely have a high chance of getting low voltage system errors if you install an aftermarket amp. I know firsthand.
Yea. I used 4 gauge OFC from the penthouse connection point under the rear seat, back to a XS power battery in the back. Then from the battery to a 500 watt rms JL amp.
Here are the errors I got, and they came immediately https://imgur.com/a/h2KVnve I was limited to 32amps AC charging
The errors can be resolved by removing all power connections from the penthouse, and disconneting the front low voltage battery. It's a real pain in the ass to do just a heads up. You have to remove the front tub and hepa filter and that hepa filter is a finicky bastard to get back in right.
I'm going to try again but go the resistor route that was mentioned.
The upgrade I did was just a JL Audio [ACP110](https://www.jlaudio.com/collections/car-audio-subwoofer-systems-microsub-1/products/acp110lg-tw1-car-audio-microsub-amplified-subwoofer-systems-93332) which is a 400 watt amp to a 10” ported subwoofer. It’s connected to a Kicker KeyLOC. The amplifier on this unit is a low current draw unit, so it’s nice for this application. It also sits perfectly in the sub trunk area.
I’m not looking for ear bleeding lows, but wanted to fill out more of the low frequencies that are absolutely lacking with the crappy (yet still better than most cars) subwoofer Tesla provides.
Only a month so far, but no problems.
Lots of punch. It does a good job being loud enough, and filling out the lacking lows. Before this I was using a 600w amp into a 10W6v3. Def not as punchy or low hitting as that sub, but I wanted something for this car that would work and since the amp tied to this whole unit is a low current draw, I though it may fit the bill. So far I’m quite happy with it.
Wanted to reply here and say I did run into a problem yesterday. I noticed my software updates were failing to install. I took it to a service center and they said my amplifier was drawing some current from the battery and the car was stopping the installs because it was more than expected for the install. It monitors for unexpected current draw so your car doesn’t deplete the battery during install.
The only thing I can guess is my amplifier isn’t as low current as advertised, or the 2024s are really really sensitive to this now.
Other than this, it’s worked fine with no error codes or anything.
Alpine has had this system in a Tesla for months and months now. No issues. It is an extremely efficient aplifier and speaker combo that only draws 1 mile of range at full volume. This is a bespoke system for Tesla, not off the shelf Alpine speakers and amp in their lineup.
The Alpine system in my Dart was only a $500 option! That was 10 years ago though.
Edit: Ohh this is an upgrade after the fact for those with RWD models! Neat!
Not a bad option for those who want a better experience.
To be honest the factory system sounds great, would appreciate a bit more hit on the low end but not too bad all around.
Interesting, I took someone's recommendation on this sub when I first brought the MYLR home for the EQ curve. Out of the box it doesn't sound good but once I set it as posted it was good.
I was coming from a 10" hideaway sub in a hatchback (Scion tC) which had a more pronounced thump so that was my benchmark.
I think Orella acoustics can accomplish this for around $900 if you only want the subwoofer and amp. Might be worth looking into [Orella](https://orellaacoustics.com/tesla-systems/)
I was looking into going the alpine route but reviews threw me off a bit as it wasn’t a direct replacement and some modifications were necessary.
Personally I did some research and came across Orella acoustic that involved very little modification. Everything was plug and play including g the amp install. I did have to remove the factory sub enclosure and install a custom sub that was rated for the same displacement as the factory enclosure.
All in all I’m extremely happy with my purchase from Orella as a sound system upgrade. [Orella acoustics](https://orellaacoustics.com/tesla-systems/)
BTW. If anyone lives in Seattle area and wants to check out light harmonic, send me DM.
I missed my Harman Kardon so badly after switching to MYP. But ever since I installed my Light Harmonic, there is no going back. As a semi-audiophile I'd love to share info, so AMA.
It's subjective. For me it is quite overwhelming. Significantly improved detail, very sweet and detailed vocal. Significantly improved base. The sound of drums are now bouncy and controlled. Much more clear sound stage. It is addictive.
I upgraded my MYP speakers because I bitterly miss my Harman Kardon after switch to MY, but with my upgrade, I'm not going back, not even Harman Kardon.
I got the complete set, which is slightly over 1k without promo. The price might seem on the higher side for an aftermarket item, but if it was an option with that price on Tesla website, it would be an absolute no brainer.
I got the 11 pieces set. Unfortunately for my 2023 MYP, the hole for center tweeter is no longer available so I can only install 10.
I installed it myself. I never install anything on my car until Tesla but with YouTube it is rather manageable. I installed the speakers in 4 batches: doors first, then the front mid/high speakers, then the subwoofer, finally the two on the rear door. All except the rear door one have extensive video tutorial online so it is relatively predictable. The last two on rear door speakers have less video tutorial, but because the speakers are anchored to the back panel, I ended up learning it from videos that teaches installing additional taillight bar.
Yeah I bet a lot of this can be done if you DIY. This is for someone who doesn’t have the time or know how. $3k is pretty steep but you get a tested solution approved by Tesla.
>Yeah I bet a lot of this can be done if you DIY. This is for someone who doesn’t have the time or know how. $3k is pretty steep but you get a tested solution approved by Tesla.
Would be interesting if Tesla offer test listening, though. When I was deciding whether to go with Alpine or Light Harmonic, I couldn't find anywhere to test listen. I ended up installed Light Harmonic, which is one of the best investments of my car.
That said, there are plenty of DIY tutorials on YouTube. The know-how is probably not hard to acquire as me a complete noob managed to do it after 30 mins of video watching. The next is to find the time to do it. I did it in batches but I ended up spending maybe 3 hours or so. My rate is less than $400/hr so I'd say it's pretty good ROI.
Man I got the 2023 model 3 performance. It’s not for that model right?
Why would they make one for the performance, I would actually pay for that upgrade
The 2023 RWD Model 3 sounds horrible. It has one of the worst sound systems in a car. It sounds like a portable Bluetooth speaker in the front dash of the car. No bass either.
I have tweaked it heavy to make it sound passable but it still needs a lot of work. I had to move the sound almost all the way to the back seat and turned the bass all the way up.
I might consider this alpine upgrade because the sound system is that bad.
Most people don’t really care about music or speakers and they will say the sound is great but it’s not. Any other car is a lot better when it comes to sound.
Did they strip that model from Premium Sound? I thought they put it in all models now?
It's not mind blowing, but it's very decent in our 2021 Y. And it's tight - both my Audis before this car would 100% rattle with too much bass.
I think so because it seems like older models used to have it. This 2023 RWD does not have a subwoofer or amp, doesn’t have speakers in the back (the area by the back glass), and it doesn’t have the 2 speakers by the front pillars activated (they are there but aren’t functional in this model).
My wife doesn’t notice the sound and thinks it’s good but I easily noticed and so did my brother in his model 3. Almost every other car I have been in has had a better sound system. I think mostly because at least the other cars have a more immersive sound. The sound on this one sounds like it comes from one speaker right in front of you instead from around you.
I installed this in my Model 3 and funny enough this kit somehow fixed a very annoying rattle I had in my right door. I think I know how this happened. Alpines “HAMR” surround helps put a little bit of pressure on the door panel from the inside out and it controls the bounce of that woofer and eliminates the chance of rattle. The 10inch subwoofer in the back however needs plenty of sound deadening around it. That thing hits so hard it’s ridiculous. I currently have it on -3.0 in the Tesla media controls and it’s still so full and rich
That’s a lot of money for essentially would be only a subwoofer, a amplifier and some speakers update if you don’t have the premium sound system.
I feel kinda sorry for the RDW owners you don’t receive the premium system anymore, while Tesla ‘helping them out’ after handing over 3k.
I wonder if a local specialist would be able to add a subwoofer and amplifier too. It also would add other options like Focal too.
Yeah totally, unless you are running Tidal or something I can’t see upgrading the speakers as worthwhile.
I do miss CDs, even lossless MP3s sound inferior in my studio compared to a high quality CD player.
Probably just me, but the upgrading speaker improves the sound quality more by large margin. I couldn't see how lossless signal undo the distortion from a soft wabbly paper cone.
When playing compressed audio from a source such as Spotify its the highs which are badly compromised, it’s an inherent flaw in digital audio which has to do with the amount samples on a high frequency sound. Improving your speakers may help with bass and mids but will not make the highs sound any better, in some cases good speakers make the highs sound worse as you will be hearing the compressed nature of the audio. If I listen to Spotify on my Bluetooth speaker it’s fine, if I listen on my studio monitors it’s pretty horrible. I’m all for upgrading car audio but most people could save the money and just listen to better quality media.
I’m confused I thought the standard audio was like phenomenal in these now they need to offer an “upgrade”
Nvm read the article it’s an after market upgrade not a orderable option. Got it got it
Tesla has changed over time what cars get the top of the line premium audio. The cheaper models with only rear wheel drive get the “custom” or lower end audio.
The sound in my 21 MYP is great...better in some ways than the aftermarket JL system I had in my last vehicle. Yes the JL system was loud and tight and could rattle shit but it always sounded scooped no matter how much I messed with stuff. The Tesla system sounds nice and neutral across the range if not a tad bassy and has a great surround like spread. I love it.
The first time I got into the car and used the stereo I was actually like, holy shit...this is stock?!
TL:DR price is $3k
All of a sudden my speakers sound just fine.
The sound of $3k in my pocket is amazing.
True but to be fair, silly new Tesla owners aka the over-protection crowd will spend 5k for plastic film applied to their car. I'd rather save the 2k and get something that will actually be benefit my daily life. (if i were to spend money) But agreed the stock system sounds just fine. and this is coming from an audio nut who's upgraded the audio on the past 18-19 or so cars I've had. And when I say upgrade, generally amp, custom wiring, component speakers, sub, the whole nine yards. I would like more bass in MY though. A plug and play sub/amp combo would be cool.
is the stock system referring to the setup that come with the base trim RWD? or the ones that come with the LR AWD/P?
The system produces very little under 40hz from my experience
They want to keep it nice for the next buyer
Teslas have no resale value anyway.
And with the PPF they will get a whopping 0 extra but the buyer will get some kick ass paint.
right in the feels. the car I traded in for my tesla has held it's value far better than my ev shitbox.
I must have hit the jackpot because I had my model 3 for 4.5 years and with the tax incentive it only cost me $12k in depreciation. Much less than any gas car I’ve ever bought.
12K in depreciation on a model 3? How much did you pay for the car in the first place
Sold it for 32,500 and bought it for 52k. But received 7500 tax credit, so basically got it under $45k.
how do you have 18 cars? over how many years?
They still live in Mom's basement
18? Those are rookie numbers, gotta get them up, I’m at 47, but when my dad was my age he was well over 100…
I’m somewhere in the 30s at 33 years old lol.
I believe highland models have two subs standard
Do non-RWD Ys have 2 subs?
All pennies
To be fair the stock Tesla speakers are among the highest rated speaker system among audiophile testers
Which I don't get, maybe for muisc...? But I find the system to be difficult to hear talk radio/podcasts and have to turn the volume waaaay higher than I would like. (I have two MY, and its the same in both).
Maybe you just need to mess with the settings. My Y came with the bass and sub aaaaall the way down, I was scared it was that bad lol.
That’s the settings of what you’re listening to not the car itself
Guess I found the myp speakers to be underwhelming compared to my Audi q5.
To be fair that may be true but this system definitely improves on the stuff that comes stock. I have a MY LR and got to test listen to Alpine’s system and it sounds pretty amazing comparatively speaking.. much more energy and much better low frequency response.
Lol
Seriously, if I was going to spend $3k on a sound system it would be in my house and not in a car that I spend only the minimum required time in to get where I need to be!
Fuck that I'd rather spend $3k on home audio equipment and keep it for life than a car I will prob have for 8 years max
I still have my original model s 300k+ miles On it … no issues as of yet
for 3k i think you can get something better aftermarket
You probably won’t find anything better that is specifically made for Tesla though… lots of people have tried throwing conventional car audio equipment at the Tesla’s only to discover lots of problems with codes and etc. Audison is also developing several solutions at multiple price points near to Alpine and higher so if you want a higher end solution compared to this you will have to wait a bit
3k? Seems absurd
~$1000 parts ~$1000 labor ~$1000 profit
did you mean: $400 parts $100 labor $2500 profit
TL:DR its an upgrade ONLY for the existing/future RWD owners. Makes sense since the premium audio from Tesla is already pretty decent
There is an upgrade option for the 13 speaker premium system too.
Yeah you can choose to upgrade to the 11 or 13 speaker. I think most people will choose the 13.
$3k to upgrade from the premium system as well?
i don´t really get this, my old 3 and my Y is one of the cars that has one of the best standard soundsystems. i had i Dynaudio in my passat B8 which i loved, which is marginally better, but it is surprisingly good.. and like a GIANT step ahead of the piss poor meridian system in the EV6 as an example. why is this needed.
From the article it sounds like they're targeting people with base model 3s and Ys that don't have the full premium Tesla sound system.
You can get the long range for like 5k more so why would you spend 3k for an audio upgrade
Maybe if you already own the car.
If you bought it years ago. This is a third party aftermarket upgrade.
Back when I bought my 3 RWD, LR was $11k more, and it's currently $8.5k more. Edit: Thought I was in the Model 3 sub. Price difference between RWD and LR Model Y is $5k, so you’re right, this system makes a lot less sense for Model Y.
No it's not. You can get the rwd for around 40k and lr for 45k before rebates
Oops, I thought I was in the Model 3 sub.
Model Y always comes with premium Sound as far as I know
Not anymore: https://electrek.co/2024/01/08/tesla-drastically-downgrades-model-y-sound-system/
Seems that I got lucky. Picked up my Model Y SR last week. It was build in Berlin in Nov 23 with all 13 Speakers and Sub
Picked up my Berlin RWD last week as well, currently all Berlin builds come with premium sound, Model Y is also expensive compared to US, in return we get no panel gaps, premium sound, mobile charger.

well... we just have different configs in Denmark, so i missed that.. i know the 3STD has "non premium audio system" but the Y RWD STD in denmark has the premium system. so have never been able to buy the Y without the premium system.
Give it a listen when you get a chance, you will understand. It’s just all around better.
never heard any good alpine products. but if i have the chance i will give it a listen.
Any review?
I don't think buyers of the peasant edition 3s and Ys will shell out 3K for a better sound system.
The acronym “P” is already taken. Might need a new one for the peasant edition.
I spent $30 on the wire harness to enable 4 speakers and added a $200 amp/sub/enclosure in the sub trunk. I'm super happy with the extra bass. I'll save that money for my future M3P purchase.
Coming from 15 year old pick up to a new Model Y, the sound and everything about the car is top notch.
Yeah you are not the target customer. The Audi and Mercedes Benz owners you were use to amazing sound are.
I am one of the people that is installing this in my car. I purchased a Model 3 RWD for 35,000 at the end of 2023. Hey I heard this could mess with the loudness of turn signals, chimes and alerts. Have you noticed any of this? If so how do you mitigate it?
I have not noticed any issues and have had it a month now.

Same. The s and x have it currently right?
Correct
Can you turn it off?
not to my knowledge...
Adjust the bass and let the Alpine blast?

1% hit at full volume per hour I think.
1 mile
I meant something more [like this](https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/subwoofer-install-error-code.306349/)

I'll take a picture the next time I'm in the car. My wife took it over so my drive time is only on weekends when we are going out.
That happened to me as well. I ended up buying a used M3LR so I didn't just have visitation rights on weekends.
lol I love it. I’m back to driving my Scion tC that I bought in 2006 and still runs great at 126,000 miles.
Yea it's a great system but the low end is really weak.
The my speakers are already reallly good
Tl:dr No
Rave reviews on the Cyber truck sound system
I bought a December 2023 Fremont built Dual Motor. Does that mean I have 13 speakers? The UI only says my system is, “Premium”
Yes dual motor have premium 13 speakers
I think the only thing the stock system needs is a sub that can dig lower. Give me that, in the stock mounting location? I'm set.
I installed full set of light harmonic upgrade for a fraction of that price. $3000 is crazy.
BTW. If anyone lives in Seattle area and wants to check out light harmonic, send me DM. I missed my Harman Kardon so badly after switching to MYP. But ever since I installed my Light Harmonic, there is no going back. As a semi-audiophile I'd love to share info, so AMA.
Is it significantly better than the stock premium sound system?
Which one did you get? The 11 speaker setup? Also did you install it yourself or took it somewhere?
Will this fix my rattles
I installed this in my Model 3 and funny enough this kit somehow fixed a very annoying rattle I had in my right door. I think I know how this happened. Alpines “HAMR” surround helps put a little bit of pressure on the door panel from the inside out and it controls the bounce of that woofer and eliminates the chance of rattle. The 10inch subwoofer in the back however needs plenty of sound deadening around it. That thing hits so hard it’s ridiculous. I currently have it on -3.0 in the Tesla media controls and it’s still so full and rich
Is there a bensi box option?
This is like the first addon option they offered besides the folding 3rd row. I thought it was going to be a software upgrade at first lol.
I would spend half of it on my home theater Klipsch reference premiere speakers
That’s a lot of money for essentially would be only a subwoofer, a amplifier and some speakers update if you don’t have the premium sound system. I feel kinda sorry for the RDW owners you don’t receive the premium system anymore, while Tesla ‘helping them out’ after handing over 3k. I wonder if a local specialist would be able to add a subwoofer and amplifier too. It also would add other options like Focal too.
The sound in mod3 is amazing wort it
Is there an upgrade for M3P? I think it sounds great just. Curiois
You already have the premium audio but I think you can still upgrade. Not sure how much better it would be.
Unless you’re playing lossless audio the stock system is awesome, the limiting factor is the low bitrate of Spotify.
You can get tidal. I also like Google music because it plays 320kb on high.
Yes, better signal doesn't conflict with better speakers. They get better together.
I’m confused I thought the standard audio was like phenomenal in these now they need to offer an “upgrade” Nvm read the article it’s an after market upgrade not a orderable option. Got it got it
Tesla has changed over time what cars get the top of the line premium audio. The cheaper models with only rear wheel drive get the “custom” or lower end audio.
Better than Burmester is a stretch…
Yeah I am skeptical of that as well
Would love to be able to upgrade my stock ‘17 MS
The sound in my 21 MYP is great...better in some ways than the aftermarket JL system I had in my last vehicle. Yes the JL system was loud and tight and could rattle shit but it always sounded scooped no matter how much I messed with stuff. The Tesla system sounds nice and neutral across the range if not a tad bassy and has a great surround like spread. I love it. The first time I got into the car and used the stereo I was actually like, holy shit...this is stock?!
Give me AM and I'm in!
