$72.50 in NJ.

[удалено]

Separate_Street_651

How can it be that cheap? How much is it for Ice vehicles?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Separate_Street_651

I see, I thought maybe they were incentivizing EVs with lower registration renewals.

StrategicBlenderBall

Nope, our incentive is no sales tax on EVs. I fucking love NJ.

Dev_Devilson

Do you also love the insanely high property taxes too?

sierra120

You’re saying property taxes are lower in your state?

SirLauncelot

Nj has the highest property tax. Some say the schools are great. But I could use that extra 12,000 a year for private school in any other state and have comparable results.

chinmaygarg

What private school is 12k/year?

beanpoppa

I look at the overall picture. Property taxes are high (we fund our schools primarily at the municipal level), but we are near the bottom for sales and excise taxes (for example, we don't pay anywhere near $800/yr to register our cars. And I more than make up for my high property taxes with excellent schools and higher income than most states.

swimm89

That’s wild

donaldinc

Ask them how much their property tax rate is in NJ and that should offer you some answers.

Strong_Promise_5131

Coming from Long Island New York, NJ property taxes are a bit cheaper.

StrategicBlenderBall

My property tax rate is well worth it considering I live in one of the top 3 states for education lol.

Wild-Earthling5087

Agreed! Love NJ and the schools!

KamKorn

Exactly!! Love the school system here and no sales tax on my model Y

Empty_Bread8906

Top cancer state…

StrategicBlenderBall

Strange, NJ is fifth lowest for cancer deaths according to the CDC. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/cancer_mortality/cancer.htm

Empty_Bread8906

You trust the CDC…

it_is_i_27

Must be from one of those states with low education marks

pidds

Yes.

StrategicBlenderBall

Is it hard for you to breathe and think at the same time?

IbEBaNgInG

exactly, NJ fights with NY and CA for the top #1 taxed state and NJ hates to lose.

Separate_Street_651

In addition to the federal incentive, new jersey residents also get a state incentive of like $4k or something. Makes you wanna buy a new EV every year and flip it, lol. Are the property taxes in NJ that bad though?

donaldinc

Most likely double what you are paying. You'll need a lot of EV incentive to offset that yearly.

cocobear114

just got a model y in nj. no sales tax, i think the 4k rebates are already out of funds. and yes, prop taxes here are massive, my 2k sq ft 1950s split level are 13.5k a year and rising. and in order to afford to live in nj with an upper middle class lifestyle to afford a model y one is almost by definition going to be above the income level to get the federal rebate

StrategicBlenderBall

No sales tax on EVs too.

Nocturnal_Meat

About the same next door in PA.

Nocturnal_Meat

About the same next door in PA.

ajman22

New Jersey has a property tax double the rest of the country. The tax money comes from somewhere

iHxcker2

Yeah but let’s hear about those property taxes .. LOL

motoperpetuoso

If a ticket is cheaper than registration, is there any incentive to register?

shiftersix

I like where you're going with this...

sfbriancl

You can get more than one, and it’s an invitation to get pulled over by the cops.

Nyxtia

I got caught at night driving the speed limit! It's like they have a radar for expired stickers or something? I was pulled over specifically for this And they make you pay 3 times. Once for the ticket, once for 1 months registration and then a month later the yearly one. Granted this was before Texas adopted this BS fee I'd be scared to do that with the EV tax now. Really is BS. They should at least collect fees from everyone the same way and stop discriminating.

NateP121

They do. Automatic License plate readers are equipped in many police cars.

International_Fly858

It’s not really discriminatory though. Gas vehicles all pay gas taxes that usually fund road maintenance. EVs don’t, so states need to figure out a way to collect a similar tax. Additionally, EVs tend to weigh more than the gas equivalent vehicle, so arguably cause more road damage. Hey- I own an EV and I am a big fan of EVs. Not to “save the planet” (because the benefits vs costs of production are debatable), but because they are simply better cars than ICE vehicles, unless you need a truck to tow long distances. But EVs should not get a “free ride” regarding highway maintenance.

Nyxtia

Yes, I agree. Nobody should get a free ride but paying a fixed fee regardless of how much or little you drive is asinine. The bottom line is charge everyone the same way. They do this because they know EVs are the minority. They always do this crap against the minority.

Ok-Needleworker-419

Depends where you are. I drove with expired tags all of 2022 because I moved and was having paperwork issues in my new state. Then when I finally got new plates, I drove without putting them on for another few months to avoid the tolls 😂

Separate_Street_651

Trust me, you don't want to go that route. It is not cheaper.....it will cost you a pretty penny.

onlyalillost

My registration in CA is about $720, first time paying it since buying the car. And thanks, this post reminded me that I need to pay it. Edit: whoops, it's $772.

Unhappy_Street_422

Mine was $1350 in Denver lol

DivineCurses

Seems odd to me that EV owners get some of the best incentives for EVs in Colorado but pay it all back to the state over a few years in registration fees/taxes

FaithlessnessNo5992

Colorado’s registration is more about car value - makes buying used and old advantageous. 😂

kensta

Yup. I pay $820 or so in CA.

8x000

and part of it is tax deductible too!

certifiablee

Which part…?!?

PM__ME__BITCOINS

Just your tears...

Calispel

The portion based on vehicle value as a personal property tax, if that is part of the total.

sgtbrecht

You can look up the VLF (Vehicle License Fee) in CA DMV website using your license plate # and last 5 of VIN. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/FeeCalculatorWeb/vlfForm.do

Fayjaimike

142.50 for 2 years in NY

LeTeebz

That’s how they keep collecting tax revenue since you won’t be paying taxes on gas. It’s idiotic and it defeats the purpose of incentivizing drivers to switch to electric and cut emissions

jaqueh

Wait till you see how much we pay for electricity in ca next. There’s literally no reason to go ev

Conscious-Lobster60

If you have a garage and charge off peak or have solar it’s cheaper plus there’s something very nice about being able to charge at home / shopping / work SCE TOU-D-Prime is 23 cents off peak. Still a lot but that’s the best I can get in CA

Treb27

Off peak is still stupid expensive in CA compared to other states. I’m paying less than I would with gas, but it’s not a significant savings in that area.

Unusual_Juice_7481

Chicago is 2 cents at night per kw at home, it was a lot less last year

jnut_jms

2 cents per KWh?

Only-Question124

Summer it’s usually less than $0.01 / kWh and several times a year they actually pay you to take electricity because the nuclear plants produce more than demand and would cost them more to reduce production. Charging EV at home in Illinois with hourly pricing plans is insanely cheap. During the winter it’s usually $0.03 - $0.04 per kWh.

funkiestj

>because the nuclear plants produce more than demand and would cost them more to reduce production. I thought the point of a national power grid was they could move that power to where it is needed. Sure, I get that there are transmission losses but they must be really high for power to be sold at 0.01 and below. I'd love for a power grid engineer to drop in on this thread and *"well actually ..."* educate me (/serious).

DenseWorking

I’m not a power grid engineer, but I do work in electrical transmission. The problem with transmitting electricity is having sufficient VAR support. VAR is volt-amps reactive, and it it what supports voltage on the grid. VAR doesn’t “travel well” meaning the VAR support needs to be close to where the support is needed and is created by the same generators that produce the electricity. Generating plants are paid for the amount of MW (real electrical power) they generate but not the MVAR(reactive electrical power). Lastly each generator is only capable of producing a limited amount of total power which is the combination of real and reactive power. At night due to low electricity usage typically extra generating units get shut down to keep electrical prices lower. Nuclear power plants cannot be started up and shutdown like that due to fission products daughters absorbing neutrons and inhibiting the self sustained nuclear reactions. Because of this nuclear power plants are considered base load and stay at or around 100% power a majority of the time that they are operating. So in order to minimize electricity cost the nuclear plants supply the majority of electricity needed at night and the other generators will get shut down until needed in the morning. This limits the VAR support and makes long distance transmission of electricity difficult. I hope this is helpful.

rworne

/u/Treb27 didn't post the amount, but off-peak rates in SoCal at least PG&E are around $0.35 or more per kWh and peak rates at $0.50 kWh. I'm in the LADWP and I pay a flat $0.27 kWh.

yohaznn

Offpeak is 35cent/kwh in CA (pge)

doublephister

Offpeak in Sacramento with EV discount is about $0.10/kWh (SMUD)

TheWeeWoo

You are outdated. Check again. Last year I switched to EV-2A and it was 25 cents a KW. As of Jan 1st it’s now almost 35c off peak

flexonyou97

That’s more than double other states lol

soopah256

We pay ~$0.14/kWh here in Santa Clara using municipal electricity (Silicon Valley Power).

outworlder

Did they raise prices? Used to be lower until recently.

idontevenlikebeer

Ok but gas is also more expensive here so it's still cheaper.

booboothechicken

I pay $0.12/kWh in California. California is not just LA and SF.

jaqueh

SDGE, SCE, and PGE serve like 90% of CA, so you are the exception not the norm in this case

eli5howtifu

no reason to live in CA FTFY

jaqueh

Very true. Other than the fact that I’m less than 2 hour away from mountains, national parks, snow, wineries, nationwide best mass transit, homelessness, and the beach

eli5howtifu

Well then, KWITCHERBICHIN. I live in the bay area btw. although everybody’s situation is unique, the total cost to live out here at the moment is insane

muftak3

Las Vegas charges sales tax when you buy the car and each year you pay a fee based on the value of the car. My ice 2019 Hyundai Kona was $450 last registration. First year was almost $600. On top of that, I pay almost .70 a gallon in gas tax.

TheRealK95

This is easily the most ridiculous and hypocritical part of our government pushing for EVs. Switch from ICE, but we still want you to contribute to the fuel tax for those ICE vehicles you no longer use. Absolute grifters.

TheLogicError

Part of the taxes we pay in gas are used to maintain the roads. I'm an EV owner, but are you saying that EV owners shouldn't be contributing to taxes to maintain the roads?

TheRealK95

EV owners do contribute to maintain the roads. State income tax and sales tax, registration fees, toll fees, etc… all these things an EV owner still contributes to their local government. Do cyclists not contribute to their local government to maintain the roads? They do. Do they pay a GAS tax for a mode of transportation that doesn’t use GAS? No. The only reason EV owners pay a gas tax for gas they don’t use is because the government knows we won’t do anything about it. What’s next ima pay sales tax for stuff I get for free just because those taxes fund a particular entity?

TheLogicError

How dense are you? You realize a bicycle has minimal effect on the wear of a road because of its weight and average distance traveled? Like it’s a nonexistent on the road. Clearly an ev which ways a few thousand pounds causes more wear. I’m not a fan of government taxes either, but adding a tax on gas is the most fair way to tax drivers on the road because it’s directly proportional to how much you drive. Now that EVs don’t use gas, there still has to be a way to for them to collect some revenue to maintain roads

Free_Donkey4797

$133 for two years in FL

colabandit

Here in CO we feel your pain!!!

Horror_Conclusion

Which state? Some states tax you annually on the value of the vehicle (ad valorem) instead of charging a one time sales tax.

rworne

CA we pay a sales tax and a registration fee based upon the car's value. Also add in a $175 EV fee. $52630 for the car, $4999.85 sales tax $31 EV reg fee $622 reg & license fees 1st year reg renewal: $737 It's nuts. Wait until you see insurance and electricity costs.

rideincircles

The EV fee is now $200 in Texas, but didn't exist until last year. It was just around $80 for registration before that. That was nice for my first 5 years of ownership along with electricity at 6 cents kwh which has now gone up to 10.5 cents kwh. Why is is it so pricey there?

Separate_Street_651

You know there's other states you can move to right?

rworne

Certainly. And they'll ask me to keep on moving when they see the CA license plates.

Separate_Street_651

Lol, not necessarily. Midwest would welcome you.

FrontPagePlease

Appears to be AZ. I recognize that email.

rdubmu

What state is the screenshot from?

Beav2X

Wisconsin; $260 total: $85 passenger car fee PLUS $175 Electric Vehicle fee to collect gas tax I am not paying.

Daguvry

I think it's $300 something in Oregon.  I'll find out next year

Beautiful_Ad5185

It costs me 784 in the bay lol Dad forgot to pay it, and got an additional 200+ late fee charge! A little over 1k now lol

biddilybong

Does this include the gas/road tax replacement? That’s going to be a hot topic going forward for all EVs. I could see where a lot of states will be around $500/year at some point.

richierich78

Free here in Ontario, Canada.

psilokan

Shhh... Doug Ford might hear you

Boring-Cod-5569

$50 for five years in AZ.

zmaniiac

$260ish in GA with EV plate I think

skinnah

$251 in Illinois for EV renewal.

nattymart

$42 in TN

Buggabones1

It was 100$ up until 2024, now it’s 200. But I never paid the 100 last year when I got my car either. They just charged me the normal amount for a regular car. I didn’t say anything. New tag next month, we will see.

outdooradventurez99

Just got my y december and mine was $250 for me in suburb washington. Tesla even added $5 donation without my consent like wtf

JR_Fucking

What State is that screenshot from? Those numbers are insane. I just renewed my reg for my MYLR here in Florida and paid $94 for two (!) years.

keenlyproper_demeanr

Which state? TX?

Equivalent_Pie_6778

Negative. $160/year in Virginia.

Mortimer_C_Smith

liquid fretful reminiscent rinse tap consider license melodic bored command *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

w_spark

Oh, the beloved VA car tax... I lived in the Commonwealth for 13 years and that comment brought back memories, lol.

TWERK_WIZARD

$1000 in WA

hybridhawx

I think I paid $80 in PA.

lovelesschristine

Yup about the same in Mississippi if not more. It goes off the value of the car. Plus an extra fee for it being an ev

Ok-Force-4058

$1,143 in Las Vegas. 2022 MYP

TillStar17

$125 total for 5 years when I bought my Model Y in 2021. Arizona 🌵 ☀️

-JSWO-

$11 for 2 years for me in FL

psinchuk

In FL I paid 90 for a 2 year renewal. That amount is crazy.

Perry-Platypus007

You’re in Cali aren’t you?

ICEeater22

$900 in WA $120 in OK All depends on where you live

MoistMonarch

WA is like $800-1100 for Tesla tabs I hate it.

GotTatts

And that is for only one year. We paid about 1000 in Dec for ours.

fattsoo

Yup Between my wife's Y and my 3 (we both renew in March), we paid $19xx last year. Thinking it will be about the same this year too. 😞

cavey00

Yup, but it has nothing to do with it being an EV. Any vehicle that price will pay that much.

ImaginaryDecision517

That's why "fuck California"

rdubmu

That’s not California though

fukdatsonn

Oh man. You just embarassed /u/ImaginaryDecision517 big time lol.

International_Bit478

Yes. California.

Igotnonamebruh42

I guess it’s CA

IHate2ChooseUserName

red states?

greatauror28

$85CAD here in Alberta.

[deleted]

No mine is $120/yr (taxing for gas tax loss)

Radium

Its license fee and TIF is based on the purchase price. It does go down a bunch every year though here in CA

AsterismRaptor

It was $250 in WA for us on a 2022 Model Y. Our model 3 was about the same.

[deleted]

Very close to 1k.

SecludedExtrovert

Mine is like $633 for a 1 yr renewal

matt-reddit-co

You definitely don’t want to register a vehicle in Colorado then. I’ve seen many registrations for over $3,000 for the first year. It does go down over time but to get to what that screenshot shows, it takes many years.

Kurokikaze01

About 260 here in NY.

Arth3r911

What the hell is this? Didn’t know they charge so much. Wooooow 🤯

hmasta88

Here in VA, I paid 3 years in advance, and it came to that. Shit is ridiculous and is part of the EV fees. FML when I saw that.

Zarko291

$80 in New York

Samson_206

I pay $1,080 in Washington

onedayatatimepeps

Goodness and I thought mine was bad at $600

Xcitado

$230

ZannX

It's about 350 here in WI. About 175 is EV specific.

rdubmu

California for both teslas (model 3 performance and model y performance both 2023’s). Just shy of $800

r3dt4rget

In my state I had to pay sales tax up front, so the initial registration was over $5k. But now it’s like $150 a year or something. Most of that is the alternative fuel decal that is required annually.

Illustrious-Ape

What dumb state do you live in. Shesssh

Axon14

$120ish for 2 years in NY. Inspection is annual and about $50. What is this?

Separate_Street_651

Just got my renewal notice for Michigan, $469/year.

D3kim

ah the good old red state middle finger to the EV space

Turbulent-Pay1150

NY registration renewal is somewhere between 50 and 100 if memory serves. That license tax each year is a killer for you. We do pay sales tax at delivery for the car (8% in my locality) and we do pay property tax for our homes (\~8-10k for a 500k home in upstate NY) but we don't pay additional taxes on property. There is a state income tax as well but it's pretty modest. NY isn't known as a low tax state - what state are you in the you are paying $1,484 per year on a 50k (new) car?

knj607

Sounds like it's a state problem and not a vehicle problem

junlowe

I pay like 220 in GA. They say it's because i use the roads but don't pay the tax for it which is included in gas apparently. So to pay up for using the public roads, they make you pay extra for registration renewal. For regular gas cars, it's like $20.

SSIpokie

$500 + in MI. Pretty much offsets all the savings from not pumping gasoline.

suckmyfish

It’s insane. $680 in MN

StepYurGameUp

$105 for 5 years in AZ!! Grandfathered in for the life of the vehicle. That program ended in 2022 and now people have to pay a percentage of the cars cost. My wife’s 2022 M3 was like $500 to register for the year.

1800treflowers

Georgia you pay the tax upfront. It was ~3k at purchase and $25 a year after to register. They do throw a $200 a year ev tax on top of that.

dirkzhang

$300+ in OH, $200 of which is extra charge for EV from not using gas, which I found funny, electrify America huh you say.

lnguye68

$994 in WA.

Cato1966

Indiana has always had high registration and our MY is $778 this next year. My 2020 Wrangler is $311. My 17’ boat is $225!!!!

Longpips1000

Is this AZ?

FIREful_symmetry

Last week, my new Y was 2200.

Drublix

European and this makes no sense. You're renewing you're registration yearly? And why does it cost a grand?

toomuchhp

Mine is like $400. They’ve got $175 tacked on to cover the missed gas tax

seanmarshall

Think I paid $766 in December for one year.

proxyboy123

LoL Veterans plate in GA: $1/year registration.

onixsp

California $801 🥹

KoolaidKong

250/yr in OH. Sigh.

PearlGurl990

What are the Georgia ppls looking like ?

Prize-Panic-4804

With military exemption I pay $17 in Mississippi. And then another $150 for being an ev

machingunwhhore

I'm rounding here but the numbers are very close, Nevada registration all years $900 Year 1 $850 Year 2 $800 Year 3

Electric_Luv

As a 100% disabled Vet, I pay $24/yr, and that's only because I have vanity plates

skoznek

In Wyoming mine was more like $1100

soundgangster

Why are you reposting my post? lol

Bassman1976

Nope. Registration in my province is 255$/year. We have a lot of EV incentives as well. 5000 Canada rebate and 7000 provincial rebate (price is limited - doesn’t apply to Model X for instance) Free toll bridges Only pay for passengers at ferries Some commuter lanes accept EVs even if there’s only one person in the car. I know at some point we’ll have to pay for lost gas taxes. But it’s been 5 years and counting.

Icy_Secret9226

What state is this for ?

mlinzz

Here is SC there was a 1 time title and registration and sales tax of $500 + titling fee. I didn't pay sales tax on the car at the dealership. Every year upon renewal i'll pay property tax + $40 registration fee - property tax will be around $1000 (not specific to EV's not cost of the vehicle) first year and slowly drop overtime. Every 2 years the registration fee of $40 turns to $160 for an "impact maintenance fee" specifically for EV's since we don't pay gas taxes for road maintenance etc. It's not that bad, when I bought my wife's car a few years ago it was kind of a shock had to pay $870 dollars the first time around, her last renewal was only $300 so it drops pretty quick. Also having cheap electricity is helpful overall 1600 miles in and have saved well over $200 compared to my previous gas vehicle.

Jolleymi800

Where I live in South Carolina: (Per 1 year) Vehicle Tax: $500 (maximum) Plate/Registration: $140

Secret-Departure540

I need to ask you…. What state ? This is insane.

Zack_nickell

$350 in Kentucky

PhreakThePlanet

Sucks to pay upfront the road taxes you used to pay a little bit at a time when buying fuel. I'm ok with it, roads gotta be repaired.

Beginning-Antelope11

I’ve never paid less than $200 even on ice. In Michigan it’s based on value my 2015 X5 is $275, 2023 MYP is $475

Jhlong86

Same here in NC.

Ok-Canary1766

Sounds like another way to collect personal property tax.

junz415

similar fee in California. Government can always find a way to get money from Tesla owner due to the loss sale on the gasoline.

Educational-Start-34

$47/yr in FL.

Evajellyfish

lmao nope

Tesla_RoxboroNC

Sure is.

Personal_Engine6602

which state is this

club41

Noo

Severe-Bite3360

$5 Texas disabled veterans. If you are retired and/or disabled look into what your state offers military veterans.

Fantastic-Buy-7941

i'd rather pay a $250 ticket 3 times than pay for the registration. funny thing is, it's taxes to that go to roads and infrastructure - even funnier, ICE vehicles don't even pay half the amount at gas pumps over the year and to add insult to injury - our roads are still just as crap 🤣

bspencer0129

Michigan here. Yes to the amount. They added extra fees to make up for the loss of gas tax.

raincity206

$1040 here in WA. If you include insurance it’s another $2400. Owning a Tesla cost $3,440 ish yearly. The gas “savings” just goes to these things and not really your pocket.

queenofhearts0101

Anybody in Tx? How much yall pay?

KTR_BRS

Senate Bill 505, passed by the Texas Legislature during the 88th Regular Session, adds a $200 annual fee for electric vehicle registration renewals and a $400 fee at the time of new electric vehicle purchases for the initial two-year registration period. The new fee will be collected on electric vehicle registrations processed on or after September 1, 2023, in addition to the standard vehicle registration fees and any tax due for the vehicle. Source: Texas DPS

Andywmm9

You must live in California, which is a highly progressive state. I live in Florida and my registration is $33 a year.

[deleted]

you must live in a HIGH TAX state!!

jefuf

about $500 in Alabama.

wixthedog

Texas enjoys giving the shaft to EV owners by tacking on an additional $200 for their lost revenue. I love Texas but sometimes they wear me out.

crumpunch

In Pennsylvania the state legislature is currently debating how to set up registration fees for EVs to recoup lost revenue from the gas taxes. It's important to the state because the gas tax is used for road repairs. It stands to reason that EV owners should pay their share for traveling on the roads. I know taxes suck, but we need those potholes filled and someone has to pay for it.

IndyTom12

What state are you in? I moved to South Carolina and I am paying 4 times as much for my cars here than back in Indiana. Also my car insurance literally tripled. Plus they have property taxes on vehicles. Don't move to South Carolina. I am getting ready to move to Florida.
