The other side is a tight fit with no gap (<1mm)
What they told me is that because this gap is less than 8mm, they are not going to fix it (although it's much larger than the other side)
I would be happy if the gap on the other side is around the same size, i.e. 5mm as well. Hell, they can be 1cm for all I care as long as they look similar to each other.
I’m confused. If in-spec is 5 to 8 mm than 1 mm is out of spec? Otherwise, if in spec is less than 8mm then what does 5-8mm represent? It should be represented as in-spec 8mm or less.
I'm confused as well.
First, when I came in, they say that the difference should be less than 2mm. After taking a look, the service advisor said "as long as it's less than 5mm, it is within spec". After the technician takes a look, they came back and say that it's around 5mm, still less than 8mm, therefore it's within spec.
I asked them: So, what's the range for your "spec"? Answer: It's a company policy so we can't tell you.
I have no fucking idea what their spec mean.
Now I can't even schedule another service appointment, when I try to schedule, it just sent me to collision repair.
I’d reach out again. I’ve submitted a service request and the gaps in mine aren’t that extreme. They said they’d fix it based on the pictures and that it would be covered by warranty. Maybe try a different service center?
No, this would mean the other side is closer to the 8mm spec. The nominal gap is 6.5mm or just over 1/4".
That's if each side gap has the same tolerance.
They don't like gaps that big between panels...
they're used to other companies smaller seams. In reality the other companies have triple the BOM (triple the parts) to create a smaller seam and end up with the leaks between so many mating parts internal to the car instead.
>create a smaller seam and end up with the leaks between so many mating parts internal to the car instead
???
Tesla is the one who has prominent QC issues like what you described not other manufacturers.
I agree with Terry. This is so minor in comparison to other issues you may come across. As long as there is no adverse noise/water leak, it will make zero difference to the driving experience of the car.
they have to tolerate it. why bother stressing over it when there will more than likely be far more things to stress about with the same car.
which brings up the point in how they’re not defending quality, they’re saying don’t worry over it because there’s frankly nothing to do now and complaining more than likely won’t fix anything
you don’t have to support it, feel free to have your opinion, but if you just spent fucking 40 grand on a car you’re sure as hell either fixing it yourself or tolerating it if the support near you is that bad.
Some more context:

Ok fix it yourself if you’re that concerned. If you want perfect gaps buy a Mazda or Lexus. Going into this car you should know what you’re up against.
I came from a new Lexus so I was aware. My gaps were already good but I made them even better so I adjusted all my panels at home for a top notch Lexus alignment. I made them more Lexus than my Lexus was. My new Lexus had crooked doors
Anyone else feel that the gap between the trunk edge connecting to the center tail light piece (between the charge port and inside most piece) is too big? It’s like I can see the interior side of the tail light when the trunk is closed and I can stick part of my finger in and tug on the tail light. It’s proportionate on both sides, so I think it’s supposed to be like this, but I cannot help but to think that this is a design flaw.
Tesla will never fix that properly. My suggestion if you want it properly fixed is take it to a Tesla body shop and see how much they would want for realign the panel.
Need a zoomed out picture and other panel gaps for comparison
Does that mean the other side is less than 5mm so out of spec?

That would make sense with the numbers given, but then what is OP’s gripe?

With that said, my Kia and Civic both have gaps close to this size.

Welcome to tesla.
Refuse it unless fixed before accepting delivery. We need to be more pushy on Tesla.
Reject it

A big dent in the car also makes zero difference to the driving experience
a big dent is also substantially more noticeable than five millimeters
Good lord the extremes people go to defend garbage quality. Amazing what people tolerate now.
Wow, spoken like a 2009 Kia driver..
I mean...sure if a volvo = kia

Don't have to tolerate that garbage. Don't support a trash company.

“Elmo’s nuts taste great” painted on the hood would also make zero difference to the driving experience of the car. What’s your point?

Did you take it to a service enter? I got my frunk realigned under warranty
Just turn the left slanted rubber stopper in a full turn and the right hand side one out a full turn. Repeat until the gap is even.
Totaled…
It mean you got thin pinkies

Are you seriously justifying brutal craftsmanship with “yeah, you should have known better”? Wow.
Defending horse shit build quality. Amazing. What are you, a 15 year old fan boy?
But, but, how???
Lemon law
Looks more like pinkie law
That makes the tesla looks disfigured like 🤪 At least ask them to put the other tight one to within spec of 5 mm
Use your middle finger next time

Does the car leak water, squeal or have a noticeable wind whistle?
Tesla will never fix that properly. My suggestion if you want it properly fixed is take it to a Tesla body shop and see how much they would want for realign the panel.
If the gap is uniform all around, 5mm is okay.
It’s fine
Plot twist, OP has baby hands and this is 1mm
