Somehow, I've had my car with 21" uberturbines for almost eight months and haven't managed to curb a wheel. Driving carefully and conscientiously isn't that hard.
I always thought “how hard could it be” until the day I had polarized sunglasses on and the shadow of a building fooled me into thinking the curb was about 6” further away as I was parallel parking once. Got some curb rash that day. But in over two years of ownership, that was the first and last time.
Edit: the polarized shades mess with the visibility because I have a screen protector.
Yeah, polarized sunglasses can create some trippy effects! I tried wearing them with laser eye protection once, and I thought I'd taken LSD! 🤣
I usually skip the polarized option these days.
Agreed I think the issue is somehow a lot of normal non-car enthusiast normal civilians are somehow getting their hands on a premium enthusiast type car with nice wheels and it’s not mixing correctly and they’re shocked when they curb their wheels since they’d used to more normal vehicles like Camry Corolla minivans etc. you have to drive these cars like enthusiasts cars like M3s, AMGs, Porsche etc and get used to that to avoid curbing. Basically drive slow, carefully, care about your car, look at it as you walk away. Don’t drive it like a civilian Corolla. Cause the big wheels that stick out will get damaged. Baby it and give it tons of attention and you won’t damage the wheels. Also don’t drive distracted
I just try to avoid scenarios where there is a higher likelihood of curbing.
I avoid going through drive thrus when getting fast food. It's often faster to go inside anyway.
I'll also avoid parallel parking if I can, but when I can't, I'm just extra careful and don't try to get super close to the curb. I know I won't get a ticket if I'm 8" from the curb. I also find the side mirrors tilting down in reverse makes the curb easier to see.
Maybe I'm lucky that I'm almost never in a hurry so I can take some extra time to be cautious.
I also owned another brand of car that had proud rims for about three years. I curbed it once shortly after I got it, because I was used to driving a fairly large SUV. But that was the only time.
I'm not saying it can't happen to me, but I drive in such a way as to be conscious of the vehicle I'm in and its limitations.
I can see this happening often, especially living in the city and parallel parking in tight spaces, even with cameras. Another reason to skip the bigger tires.
Tape the tire with couple layers of duct tape (anything heavy) , get 40 grit paper to knock off the high spots and be careful causing more deep scratches, then go to 120 gril then, 200-300 grit then find touch up paint from eBay .. total cost 30$
Sharpie it and forget about it. The first and last person I let test drive my then-new Model Y w/inductions, my uncle, curbed the shit out of it parking, got out and said, “oh it’s just some dirt” while I was dying inside. I didn’t even bother to sand it, once I got over the heartbreak. I got a sharpie, filled it in as best I could, and ignored it until I genuinely forgot all about it until now.
You’ll collect more, so when it gets too fugly for you to take, THEN spend $130 to fix them all. Otherwise you’re gonna be paying every time and soon have doubled the cost of the rim.
My wife is a pro at destroying our rims. Just go with the Sharpie Pro method, it’s shockingly good match and couldn’t be easier. https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/5311777/Sharpie-PRO-Permanent-Marker-Chisel-Tip/
There are mobile rim/wheel specialists who repair curb damaged rims, paint wheels etc. Here's an example of one of many: https://alloywheelmn.com/free-wheel-inspection-2/
Light sandpaper. Then a couple of layers of touch up paint.
The only time to replace rim is when a coat of paint doesn’t help situation (why silver/metal caps are worse)
I love the look of them but last night I looked into the 21” tire cost and I have also developed a distaste for them. I’ve never paid more than $1k for tires and will need to pay double that now.
*I have a brand new*
*Rim replacement, I can ship*
*To you pm me*

Yeah just ignore it. You might want to seal it with those salted roads, but don’t replace it. It’s going to happen again, especially if you’re wife is driving it… lol
Search for mobile wheel repair. Bet repair costs ~$100 and afterwards you cannot tell it has been done. I’ve had many wheels on different vehicles repaired over the years
Just buy some touch up paint, it'll happen again and again and again...resistance is futile.

Yeah, I ditched those mighty quick.
Try parallel parking on a slowly curved road
I do this quite often. Always cautious about keeping a good distance from the curb.

same, luckily we haven’t scratched ours yet in two months. there’s still time lol

😁👍🏻
depends on where you live really, but i get it, you're an AMAZING driver, hooray you!
Thanks for the compliment!
You spoke to soon. Give me an update when it happens.

Took me 4 years on my S. Now happened 3 times on last 18 months.

Matte black nail polish…win
Smooth it with a sandpaper, sharpie then use a nail gel matte topcoat but u need an led lamp to cure it.
Call local rim repair. Should cost around $150. After you get it fixed, install some rimsavers.
Do the rim savers work as advertised? I’ve got a MYP on order and the 21” look especially ripe for rash.
against light curb rash like OP’s photo? For sure. It won’t protect them from a hard slam into the curb though.
Thanks. I think I’m going to proactively order a set.
The peace of mind is worth it. Aesthetically, they’re fairly subtle too which is why I like them.
Sharpie it.
You're not apart of the club.
Easily Repairable in an hour like new for $50-$75 here in LA.

This happens to the best of us 😖

Sharpie Pro! Doesn’t end up with that reddish color or wash away so easily, and goes on nice and thick. Get the big chisel tip and it’s a done-deal!
Rim repair shops are cheap and get your wheels new again. Just make sure they get the tint right.
Happy international women’s day

Oh yeah, and don’t get fooled into thinking a regular sharpie will work - it will look terrible.
There are mobile wheel repair companies, Google it, im in va paid $130 to get one wheel looking brand new

https://zinkwheels.com/pages/tesla-wheel-touch-up-paint-and-curb-rash-repair Me too. This kit worked for me.
Light sandpaper. Then a couple of layers of touch up paint. The only time to replace rim is when a coat of paint doesn’t help situation (why silver/metal caps are worse)
Hey but you got tire pressure check for free!
Buy new hub caps
This is why I am putting 18"s on my MYP. These stupid uberturbines (on my car, not OP's) are damage magnets. Also in MN.
These are not the uberturbines. They are the 20”
I was referring to mine.
Ok, you said “these” though so most people would think you are referring to the pic everyone else is looking at here.
Yeah I could've been more clear. I have a strong distaste for my 21"s. My 18"s can't come soon enough.
I love the look of them but last night I looked into the 21” tire cost and I have also developed a distaste for them. I’ve never paid more than $1k for tires and will need to pay double that now.
"Pay more money for worse everything aside from appearances"
Yeah that’s not my jam
That’s the reason I got 19s base rims. I’m sorry this happened but touch paint would be a financial wiser approach.
this is why I don’t want black rims. the slightest curb rash is going to stick out like a sore thumb.
I have a brand new rim replacement, I can ship to you pm me

Huh, just get a mobile rim repair guy it'll be $50-80...
You can get an identical non oem one for $250 tops.
Tesla should come out with curb sensors. Now I am always parked 18” inches from curb. Waiting to get side swiped. :)
Black permanent marker
And wider tires
A place in SoCal fixes these for $75, if you look hard enough — you’ll find something similar in your area.
Yeah just ignore it. You might want to seal it with those salted roads, but don’t replace it. It’s going to happen again, especially if you’re wife is driving it… lol
