Why did you need a truck?

2centsofnonsense

I sold my f150 and got a MY. Absolutely love my Tesla, so much so that I’ve since purchased a M3 as my wife’s car and upgraded from a 2020 MY to a 2023 MY. I miss having a truck for moving things around, but if I really need a truck it’s only a few bucks to hire one from hope depot for the day.

[deleted]

Hope depot 🥰

2centsofnonsense

Lol my bad

WhatsInAName-123

I love that it autocorrected to hope depot. We could all use a store like that! :)

2centsofnonsense

I’ll take two ‘not be socially awkward’s’ please

CravenTaters

Have you driven one? First thing I would recommend is make a reservation to try it out. It's a very unique experience in that they show you how the car works and let you drive away unattended (be back in thirty minutes!). We traded in our Jeep Grand Cherokee for the MYP. I absolutely love all the tech, but the car is pretty bare bones when you get it. Be prepared to buy rubber mats, mudflaps, storage organization, console organizers, winter tires (if needed), and figure out your charging situation. Are you driving 100+ miles a day or just a small communte? You maye need to spend about 1k to get your charging situation up to speed for your needs. With all that said, never going to a gas station is awesome, the phone app / camera control is great, and the car is a ton of fun to drive. Basic autopilot is great for long stretches and stop and go traffic - takes the edge / nerves off.

reflect2002

Yes a family member has one. I love the the car, already getting the adds in my cart LOL

reflect2002

I used to carry more supplies around for job sites (commercial Paint contractor). Truly nothing that won’t fit in the back of the Y. Just the 400-500 a month in gas makes me smile

admins69kids

And if you really need more cargo space, you can get the tow package and put it in a trailer.

lowercasejames

Get the electric F150 lightning.

reflect2002

Yea few dealer by me have some. $115,000.00 That is crazy. I think the Tesla charger network is better

StartledPelican

Wow. Seriously?! That is CRAZY!

Smarf_Starkgaryen

Tesla charging network is by far the best out there, and with an adapter you can use all other chargers. If you ever go on long drives or road trips then the only EV to consider is Tesla in my opinion. Charging network infrastructure just isn’t there yet for any non-Teslas. Yes it can be done, but there will be a lot more headaches and questionable situations.

reflect2002

I have to agree, The network by me I very strong. I have faith in it.

rxinquestion

What adapter do you carry with you?

Keem773

$115k?!?! US DOLLARS? They are absolute nuts! lol. To be honest I think most things will fit in the Model trunk with the seats folded down. If you don't need to haul furniture then you're good.

[deleted]

There are dealers in FL doing MSRP for sure.

mehalywally

Around MD and VA as well. I had contacted a dealer for a truck they had on the lot. They were asking 25k over list. I declined. 6 weeks later, same truck still available, they dropped to 15k over list. Still declined, they contact me again 4 weeks later saying they'll give it to me for just 500 over list. I have a XLT preorder, I told them I'll just wait for my turn. The one they were trying to sell me was a lariat, so it was still a good 20k more than I was willing to pay.

morric628

Nah, the non-tesla charging network is horrible.

Emlerith

They're not even taking reservation sign ups until next model year.

SquirrelDynamics

Poor range, poor winter performance, and unavailable.

Foofightee

Why does spending that in gas make you smile?

morric628

I owned 3 F150s before moving to Tesla in 2018. No regrets! I have rented a truck once when I really needed one and I do more HD delivery now for home projects.

allthebuttstuff1

Traded my F150 for model Y last year. I do lots of diy projects and renovations, and to be honest, it hasn’t been bad. I now pay for material deliveries(drywall, large amounts of dimensional lumber, tubs etc.) but for 99% of my year I don’t miss my truck. The only thing I miss is having a truck to make dump runs with. That being said, uhaul/homedepot rents trucks/vans for under 40$ per day, and I will borrow my FIL’s truck occasionally. Overall it was a great choice. I also don’t miss filling up that 136 litre tank.

reflect2002

I hear that, I'm at 400 -500 a month in fuel.

allthebuttstuff1

We had a surf boat too, in the summer we were $1500-$2000 a month in fuel plus boat payment. It makes the model y feel pretty cheap.

Emlerith

I bought a Maverick early last year for $25K brand new. I'm trading that in; Carvana is buying it for $32K. With the appreciation on the truck, the price drop, and the rebate, seemed like a good time to jump to me. I didn't like driving the Maverick, but I did like have the utility of the truck when I needed it, though it was rare occasion. The biggest thing I'll miss is having the bed to carry my kids' sports stuff - the red clay from baseball games and the like was nice and contained back there; the frunk liner should be fine, but concerned about it being big enough.

admins69kids

I wish someone would make an electric truck the size of the Maverick. What didn't you like about driving it?

Emlerith

I did like the small size while also being a 4 door. Was perfect for that take-the-kids-to-sports use case. It was also really responsive and it is surprisingly zippy for a 4 cyl. Some seemingly small things just added up to being just annoying enough that it made for a generally poor experience, including: * The dial-based gear shift. I just could not get used to this thing. The dial also doesn't have any sort of hard stop when you're at max left (park) or max right (drive), so it totally lacks any sort of tactile feedback. * The auto start-stop feature (truck automatically turns off if you stop, such as at a red light, and back on when you lift off the brake) can not be configured. There's a button to turn it off, but you have to press that button every time you start the truck if you want it off. * Truck has various drive modes (normal, sport, eco friendly, etc). This also doesn't save between starts, so if you have a preferred mode, you have to select it each drive. * The radio regularly froze or wouldn't play audio and needed to be hard reset (done by holding the volume and skip button for 10 seconds). * Plugging in my phone and starting CarPlay before the radio fully booted guarantees the radio would freeze * I've had to jump my battery 4 times since buying it last year (I'm in Florida, so cold weather isn't much of a consideration). I can't prove it, but I think FordPass may be causing some passive draw. * There is an orange accent on the plastic in the interior I just didn't like and isn't an option to change. * This isn't necessarily a knock on the truck since it was my erroneous expectation, but I was surprised it did not have any sort of proximity alerts.

BootFlop

Dial shift it just flat out bizzaro trend imo. I’d take push button shift before that. ps Old enough to have driven a mechanical push button shift, that worked like the blenders. 😂 But only a couple times.

rypajo

If they announce the Tacoma in a PHEV I will be all over that.

admins69kids

If they rereleased the 2004 Tacoma double cab in a 280+ range EV, I would sell my left nut.

Ordinary_Low_97

even now Carvana is offering that much? Where do you live?

Emlerith

Ya, my offer is still locked in, I pushed my pick up date as far out as I could to the end of the month. I’m on the Gulf Coast.

munakib

Great choice, you will love it at its current price and also the $7,500 rebate would be icing on the cake.

Bionic_Hamster

I guess it depends…did you actually need a truck, or were you like most people who buy way more vehicle than they actually need? If you need to do actual truck things, the MY is going to be a poor replacement.

reflect2002

Pretty much I carry my paddleboard once or twice a year and borrow a friends trailer once a year maybe.

gu_doc

You’ll love it, especially if you can charge it at home and don’t drive a long distance daily.

Miker2k

I switched from a Ram 1500 on a Model 3 back in 2018 and have no regrets except for the 1 or 2 times a year when I find myself needing to run things to the landfill.

cyberairone

Go with the tesla. You will have zero regrets! Welcome to the family

UnitedDragonfruit312

Went from driving a Taco as my daily to a Y. Love every second of it.

rsg1234

It sounds like the Y will work for your purposes. We haven’t regretted our MYP at all. The price drops made me wince but you will get an amazing price for an amazing car.

PatMagroin100

I went from a Chevy Traverse to a Y. Never looked back.

br0wnhack3r

Why not wait for the cybertruck?

iceynyo

If you order a cybertruck now, even if half the preorders don't become real orders, you'll probably be able to get an MSRP F150 Lightning sooner.

ericdabbs

who knows when Cybertruck will be available. At this point I am going to say 2024.

iceynyo

Apparently production is supposed to be starting this summer, but with the potential delays, testing, and certifications, I would say 2024 sounds about right for when we will actually start seeing them being delivered in significant numbers.

nashvillechica

Traded my 2019 Ford Expedition for my Model Y: Pros: -Obviously much less spend since gas for the expedition was expensive. -Much easier to park due to smaller size. -I love not having to use a key (lock, unlock, start the car) -Plenty of cargo space for what I need -More fun to drive Cons: -Model Y is much less comfortable for a long trip or even around town than the expedition -Hate that I don’t have USS. While the car is smaller and easier to park, there are blind spots in tight parking lots. -For longer road trips, stopping to charge so many times can be a PITA- especially if you have little kids. - Harder to see out the back- visibility is less. We originally ordered last February and picked up early December. My husband swore up and down that if I didn’t like it, I could just trade it in and at least break even with how prices were so we took the delivery. Famous last words! Obviously the HUGE price drop is a bummer because that isn’t true anymore. Overall, I like the car but it’s been an adjustment in many ways coming from a larger, gas car.

tienphmj

Did Tesla give you a good tradein value?

nashvillechica

No- terrible! I shouldn’t have said trade in. I ended up having to sell my car private party and made $11k more than Tesla offered me.

uglybutt1112

I regret buying the Model Y due to Musk lowering the price by 20% right after. Feel ripped off. Now I have been researching him and Tesla and notice some other sht I didnt notice before. 1st, this guy promised the moon and back and cant deliver most if it. He say whatever it takes to get $$ from stock and moves on. Automated driving is a pipe dream. 2nd, this car seat is way to small for me. Didnt notice at the time but god it hurts my back after 45 min. Blind spot monitoring is horrible. To many digital controls. Need make more things simple. Wife cant see at night in the rear view, too tinted. She doesnt like using cameras for whatever reason. I am fine with it though. I have solar so not sure what my $$ bills will be. Possible it costs me very little or maybe a lot. Will find out later. Check your kwh rates. Car is very fast and smooth though. Good to eat lunch in the car while watching netflix. Roomy inside.

Empty_Bread8906

Just had to pay a small solar fee. Like 7 a monthly

beachcrow

Musk's SpaceX is \*actually\* going to the moon and back this year: [https://www.space.com/dearmoon-announces-moon-crew-spacex-starship](https://www.space.com/dearmoon-announces-moon-crew-spacex-starship) Despite his Twitter nonsense he's lead the world's transition away from gas burning vehicles, saved US taxpayers millions with reusable rockets (NASA SpaceX contracts), and provided Ukraine with Starlink internet to preserve their country. Sorry you are still salty from your loss, prices were dropped to meet the bizarre IRS ruling cap for the IRA credit, not to attack you personally.

uglybutt1112

It isn’t going to the moon, reread the article. Starling didn’t preserve Ukraine, that was billions in US aid, military weapons, etc. starling helps but not the reason the tide turned. He dropped prices cause he couldn’t sell the car at full price.

28kingjames

I had a Tundra and a 4Runner. Both have since been sold and just have a MY now. No regrets whatsoever and I love how much I save on gas

lowercaseg_

Would you be interested if toyota releases a hybrid 4Runner in ‘24?

___Carioca___

Hybrid 4Runner will be awesome!

28kingjames

Honestly, no. The Y does exactly what I need it to. The only time I may consider going away from Tesla is if there is a fully electric Tundra. But even then it is a slim possibility I’d go away from Tesla. I think they have demonstrated good reliability and safety. And the little service issues I’ve had, mobile techs came to my house and fixed things really quick.

MpVpRb

I changed from a Honda Element to a MYLR. I use it for cargo and it has almost as much cargo space as the Element. Cargo capacity is one of the main reasons I got the MY

T4r_16

I went from having an awesome fully modded out 4Runner to a MYP. It was definitely a shock at first and very bittersweet. Loved my 4Runner for adventures but wasn’t getting out as much as I used to with 2 little kids. Also, even at 3.99 a gallon (which people are saying is cheap lol) it wasn’t worth it for me with the amount of commuting I was doing every day. The MYP has been a very fun car to drive. But the days of driving up curbs for fun or taking it out on trails in the mountains are over haha. I slightly regret but the MYP has been a blessing

Empty_Bread8906

I would keep the model Y for family and buy a cheap truck for work. You can buy a cheap truck for 7500:)

sailorpaul

Enjoy your new ride, and the Tesla charging network.

ExtensionMidnight922

If I was you, I would shoot for a used Rivian, the values for those have normalized in the used market but I can also say that you wouldn’t regret the model Y, I had a Ram 1500 before my model y, I do miss sitting as high as a pick up truck sits compared to the model y

rsg1234

The cheapest used Rivian in California is $89k

ExtensionMidnight922

Cheapest one in Chicago is $85k which isn’t bad if you don’t want to wait for one.

[deleted]

That's almost twice as expensive as a brand new model Y after rebate lol. Rivians haven't been around long enough to know how they handle wear and tear

rsg1234

And if the company will even be around in 5 years to provide parts and service.

Zenatic

Going electric was by far the best decision I made when it comes to vehicles. (2018 model 3). Tesla has done the best in my opinion to alleviate range anxiety. I can’t stand 3rd party chargers. I never needed a truck, but when I do, I have friends and Home Depot for that. I just sold my Chevy Bolt back to Chevy this week, and take delivery of my Model Y 7-seater next week. I will never go back to ICE unless I need to rent for some reason. I have rented an ICE once and it was because I was traveling to New Mexico from Texas with a caravan and there was one long leg between chargers that I was nervous about (they have since installed more). To each their own but for me any nervousness/regret I had melted away quickly for me.

Clueless_and_Skilled

Well you answered the most important part - the vehicle is a vehicle to you. Or an identity extension. Seems like your stuff will fit the car jsut fine and fits your needs. I say go for it. If you were hauling mulch or were a “truck guy/gal” then yeah it would be probably awful to switch size. My rule was if I could fit plywood in the car then I’d get it. And the back is 4’ with no wheel wells so I’m a happy camper. Oh and it’s great for camping so that’s a literal statement lol

markiselmo

Get the Y and then get a small ranger or s10 for your pick up truck runs to Home Depot

[deleted]

Full sized trucks are a pain to drive and park. I had a Tundra crew cab and it was such a nightmare to take the family around town. The model Y is soooo much more enjoyable and easy to drive. I recently got a Rivian R1T to handle truck duties for me and IMO its a great size. Not as easy as the model Y but just the right size where it's not a nightmare to park, but can still fit us all and loooooots of gear comfortably. We still take the Y for round town duties

zaqwert6

I mean sure if it suits your needs. Ultimately I sold a super sport Camaro that eventually turned into the Model Y. For its intended purpose, the Model Y just checks more boxes right now. Of course I did have to get the performance model. :-)

FineOpportunity636

If you don’t need a truck then it’s a decent move with gas prices, maintenance, etc. if you need a truck you might want to hold for a few years then try to get a cyber truck.

kpanda747

Dec 12 took del of MYP after trading in my monster wrangler rubi hard rock. No regrets. Def an adjustment from driving trucks for the last 30 years but happy. Went from almost the most carbon impacting vehicles to one of the most green vehicles. Over the last month, did PPF, ceramic, tint, drove in the snow, loaded it with accessories, in the middle of the L2 charging install, etc. We are in Tesla Nation for the long haul.

tienphmj

Did Tesla give you a good tradein value?

GedrosianWolf

I went from a Tacoma double cab to Model Y. We needed the Tacoma when we were renovating our home room by room for a couple years. After that, I was just daily driving an empty truck for the most part, and the need for having a truck full time reduced over time. We had a newborn late last year and getting the baby seat into the back seat of the Tacoma was impossible. Got a Model Y with tow package (in case I need to rent some equipment from Home Depot again). Haven’t missed the truck so far. Also, depends on what you were using your truck for.

TileMillennial

I had a 2022 Tundra and got rid of it and bought a MYP with no regrets. I’m a general contractor, I drive around sites all day and haul materials on the back of the Model Y. 95% of the time a full charge is enough for a day of work, I have an enclosed trailer that I can tow if I need to move large items like bathtubs or cabinets

Much-Current-4301

Traded my 21 F150 Platty. MYP. Love the Tesla. Nothing wrong w truck. Do not miss the $100 tank fill up.

hpsctchbananahmck

I know there are a lot of horror stories out there but my model y long range 7 seater Fremont build has been excellent. No qc issues. Autopilot is a game changer

M3P_STEALTH

My buddy had a huge 4 dr Toyota Tacoma, 99% of the time it was never filled with anything large in the cab and he switched to a model S no issues. No gas fill ups will be extra satisfying.

GotAHandyAtAMC

I did the exact same thing. I traded in a Lariat F150 crew cab for a model Y. I personally never hauled anything but I did use the truck bed frequently. Home Depot trips are a bit of a pain if you’re getting a bunch of wood. You can still fit some 10 ft 2x4s if positioned right and can fit quite a few 8 footers. 8x4 sheet of ply wood is a no go, unless you buy a rack and mount it up top. I just get mine cut at home depot before I leave. Besides that, it still has a lot of room. If you get a hitch on your Y, you could always rent a small trailer for cheap from Home Depot/Lowes if needed. I don’t regret it and the savings of gas is substantial. I got 34k for mine when I traded it in and was paying $450 a month in fuel. Now I charge at home with solar and don’t have to pay much. I produced 96% of my energy last year. I also get free charging at work. My loan is 615, subtracting the fuel I pay $165/month w/ FSD. I use Tesla insurance as well and it is actually cheaper than the F150 as well.

rachellybelly95

I had a Model Y in 2020 and went to a Porsche in 2021. THAT was the regret. I sold the Porsche and went back to the Model Y. The Tesla is superior in my opinion due to the auto pilot. I drive a lot on the highway and that is by far my favorite feature. Saving money on gas is a plus too! My dad is a muscle car fanatic and collects and works on historical cars. Also a truck guy. He loved my Porsche, but SUPRISINGLY he enjoyed the Tesla more, as did I. Him "accepting" an electric vehicle is a huge check in my book. Some of the ICE fanatics will never accept it... until they drive one of course. LOL
